Growing up my mom had to deal with a lot when she would go back home, and she connected a lot with this song. She had a lot of mental illness due to her childhood being very traumatic and that line would always bust her out crying when it came up. And now for me too.

A lot of people don't realize that country music has always faced difficult or controversial issues head-on. Concrete Angel by Martina McBride is a touching but hard to hear song about child abuse. Even in the 1970s, Loretta Lynn had a song called "The Pill" and that's exactly what it was about. One that hits home for me is "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" by Patty Loveless (cousin to Loretta Lynn). All four of my grandparents were from Eastern Kentucky. Her voice is something else. Another song by Dolly Parton is "Coat of Many Colors" which is a true story about her childhood. In fact, all these songs have a personal connection to the ladies singing them. Concrete Angel was inspired by the death of Martina's niece. If you read a bio of Loretta Lynn it will be very obvious why she sang a song celebrating birth control. And Patty's father died of black lung disease from working in the coal mines. Country music is the voice of the rural poor and working class.

Martina McBrides song really got me through a lot. I was severely abused from 9 till 20 when I met my ow husband. My dad went to hit me and my husband told him that was the last time that was every happening again. My dad left us all within a month. He had no control any longer. He cleaned out bank accounts....everything. my mom was working thank goodness. She never knew us kids were abused until my grandpa died when I was 28. I was still frightened lol. Now at 42 dont care sperm donor can kiss my butt.

But, she is in the business, though, THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS, if you understand the industry, The Music Industry is of the Entertainment Business, You have to sign 'THE CONTRACT", Selling out your soul, and certain things the E Overlords require you to do to move up the ladder, Like your inhiation into certain Clubs, Like one is called the 9th Circle of Witches. They all attend these rituals, they all get tips from the deep state on insider trading and have excess to off shore accounts in Bahamas, Top People of the Hollywood CIA Illuminati controls the E Business. You have to promote their agendas, in your career, the diff purple colors, black and white checkerboard, red and black colors, tiffany blue, (Pharaohs/Phoenicians), colors showing their royalty, bw checkerboard, red and black, all showing DUALITY, then they have to constantly do the symbols or wear the symbols, etc. And show certain numbers, that mean diff things, They have to tell us before they do something thats evil to cause us harm, so the Satanists Overlords of the E Business make ALL of the people in the Entertainment Business, Speak to us through a song, their colors and duality, and symbols/ Like the Eye of Horus, 1 Eye covered up, hand over 1 eye, forming the pyrmaid with both hands while performing or anytime on a talk show or interview on news, the Men doing the Masonic handshack, etc. They get alot of these people when they young and when they get older and want to get out of there Music label and go off on there own, Like Prince did and even bought all of his recordings back from Warner Brothers, He went out on his own, like Michael jackson did, both The _ewish Cabal always comes a calling for there souls. Sad What a Person will do to be made Famous, get there own TV show, be in lots of popular movies, People need to just Stop It, by speaking out about this Evil Business. No More LOVING the so called Stars, And these reality shows, like American Idol, Its for the Overlords to make a new fresh young talent, who wins, there name is already popular from being on Idol and winning, Everyone in America watches to see who wins Idol on that last show, all the News reports on it, etc. they get there own Label, a million dollars, but you better believe they will not get it, till they sign that contract. And whats on it they are required to do to move up the ladder in Hollywood. I hardly ever watch a movie anymore, No Mainstream media news, will not listen at all, none of there controll fabricated stories in Reader Digest, TV Guide, TIME Magazine, APP, Reuters NewsPapers, NYTimes, WashPost, any of the Deep State Military Industrial Complex Lies and Misinformation. I have my own news sources on line who are REAL Journalists, Not Cia paid agents, posing as Actors, reading off there scripts everyday given to them, Sent all the way from a Private Rothschild Business in London City UK, Thats where the Mocking bird MSM news in America gets there daily script to read you what they want you to believe, pushing there _ewish Zionist s Cabal Occult Agenda, which is for a 1 World Gov and Religion, Make all of us Global Citzens, and enslave every women and man and child, just like JFK said they was wanting to do to the world, and They killed him a week later. These so called Famous people do some horrific thing to kids, evil horrific things to be rich, and all are apart of the Caba's Scheme to enslave us all. They are all taught how to be the best actor or actress you can and training About being a Good Liar. Empor Constatine of Rome used what they called, Bread and Circus, that is what the Industry is, To keep us all distracted playing the video games that APPLE made, etc. While they have infiltrated everyhting in our country and world. They said in 1890, they would take over the world by infiltrating everything , every system we have in place, getting there people in the top leadership at these companies, and they said they would use toxic chemicals in the foods and crops, and posion in there vaccinations. So the next False Flag Evnt, they pull, look for thier colors, symbolism, Hand signs, etc. They want to keep us in a constant state of Fear, Say NO to there Fear Porn Lying MSM news. Say No to there jab shots and _oosters. The Phoenix Rising isa one of there main symbols,

Written by and originally performed by Bobbie Gentry. She was a powerhouse in music from the 60s to the 80s. In 1982 she accepted an award at the American Country Music awards and then walked off stage and nobody has ever really seen her since. She keeps to herself and doesn't do interviews. Some songs of hers are Ode to Billie Joe (the song most reactors react to by her), Louisiana Man, Reunion, Okolona River Bottom Band (my personal favorite), and Mississippi Delta.

I find a lot of reactors who think the mom is sending her 18-year-old daughter off to support the three of them on her back. I never got that from the lyrics (and it's refreshing to see that you take it the same way), since the mom said she expected herself and the baby to soon be gone. Rather, she's telling Fancy this dress (that represented the last of their funds), this plan, was the best she could do for her beloved girl, and she doesn't see any way out of this life of crushing poverty for Fancy, someday ending in her own demise, other than that life on the streets.
Either she doesn't believe in charity, doesn't know about gov't assistance, or perhaps neither existed in that part of the country at that time (this was written and released in 1969 by Bobbie Gentry as detailing events from the title character's teen years, so from the early 50s, maybe earlier).
So rather than Momma telling her, "You go out and support me by doing this," I believe the message was, "This is your only way out of this situation that will soon be the end for me and the baby, this is your one chance to survive, and be true to yourself as you take it." Momma was wrong, of course (except for the being true to yourself part), but it was all she knew.
And in this, Gentry was telling the story, as she saw it, of too many she no doubt knew of during her time in that region. Fancy's eventual prevailing over that life would have been the fairy-tale ending to a checkered past that few, if any, of those girls got to experience.

The first time I saw Reba live she was with Kenny Rogers at the Gold Coast in Australia. The stage went dark and the a single pin light shone down on Reba and she sang...with no music....Patsy Cline's "Always". I sobbed like a baby. Then she told the story behind the song 'The world ain't gonna stop for your broken heart"...she was broken hearted after she lost her tour manager and 7 members of her band in a plane crash. After cancelling the tour and refusing to sing again...a friend said to her one day...'you know the world ain't gonna stop for your broken heart". It is a stunning song.

This song was written by Bobbie Gentry. Billie Joe McCallister jumped off the Tallahachee Bridge & Fancy got pimped out…. She really paints a picture of life in the impoverished south of the 1950s/60s.

Yes, this song is very disturbing.... but very grounded in reality... especially for the time frame they are talking about... Mothers were desperate to get their daughters out of the poor situation they were in so they literally sold their daughters off hoping for a better life for them... but this stuff still happens today just with children... My dad's siblings are effed up on drugs bc my grandma made them turn tricks when they were effing children just for money.... It sickens me to this day.... I refuse to talk to my grandma.... ever! I could never imagine doing such a thing to my kids. I love how you brought your own experiences into your reaction and just not being able to even try to think of doing that to your kids. So awesome that you care for your son so much and you are trying to give your son the life you didn't have! My mom walked out on me and now as a mother I could not imagine ever walking out on my kids! You are a great dad and a great person for choosing to do the opposite of what you were given or not given! Choosing to do the opposite of what you were taught and how you were treated as a child.... Just shows your integrity and your love for your son!

If you like the movie type video here, as well as the storytelling aspect, you will love The Night The Light Went Out In Georgia. Thats another fantastic cinematic quality video by Reba and that story- WHEW, twists and all.

That song left me with a flood of tears in my eyes and I'm not much on sentiment. I do know that values lose out to real hunger. I mean brink of starvation hunger, not just a day or two without a meal. There's a line in Cameron's Titanic from Rose's mother that says it best, "A woman's choices are never easy." The song gives Fancy closure with her mother. But it does leave one loose end. We are not told what became of Fancy's infant brother.

Great Reaction!! I love it when reactors express what a particular song does to them. Those personal thoughts and insights are what make a reactor worth watching! Some people don't like the videos (claim that they are distracting). But personally I LOVE a great song that comes with a well made video because it shows you exactly what vision/message the singer wants the song to express, and Reba's videos are exceptional. The music video of her song, "I'll Be" is one of my favorites. Also, the music video of Reba and Kelly Clarkson singing "Because of You" would definitely be worth reacting to! I enjoy watching your reaction videos and I look forward to seeing more!

For me, this song is about learning NOT to judge. We can't control where we come from, only where we end up. We ALL have a story, but how we deal with that story is what makes us who we are.

Thank you. Very good way to put it. Sometimes life gives us heartbreaking choices, and we have to stay alive. I don't shame the mom, she had probably considered EVERY OTHER possibility; and her love made her choose to make sure her daughter didn't starve. May we never face that kind of separation.❤❤ Or...however it's done....GET THROUGH IT.

Country is country folks version of the blues. But country has its roots in blues too. Bobby Johnson was a huge inspiration on both genres as well as rock. This was a song i heard in the early 90s. My friend Jeanne was a country fan.

My mom used to sing Fancy to us when we were little kids. One that always made me cry as a kid was Blood Red and Goin' Down by Tanya Tucker. Tanya is another queen of country that is a good storyteller.
And it doesn't sound like ambition song to me now but growing up we were "poor white trash" and it felt ambitious. But as a 45yr old mom definitely do not see it the same.
And I'm a lot of firsts for my family too. First college grad. Got a bachelor's degree in 2007 🎉 my two kids were the first to graduate high school (I got a GED when I was 16) so the cycle can be changed. 😊
