    I own both the CRF300L and an older '07 KLR. Complaints about carbs notwithstanding, the only advantage the KLR has over the CRF is its ability to haul more stuff (that you don't need) and be more competent on the interstate. I will be honest and say the only reason why I haven't sold my KLR is because it has an emotional connection to me. First dual sport, first bike I took big trips on, gave me happiness when I was having bad times.
    The CRF is better in every other category, and let's be honest, we buy dual sports to do hooligan shit off-road with. You're not going to enjoy interstate on either bike. Just get the bike that is more fun off-road and on twisty roads.

I know I have to offload it but they do things slightly better than each other. The decision is made but damn, it will be hard to watch someone ride my Triumph away.

      Or just buy a trailer. I don't understand why people think a duel sport must do well on the highway. Even if it did, who wants to ride a motorcycle home after a day of off road riding? It is miserable. Much better to put it on a trailer and ride home in a nice air conditioned car.

    Having done almost every trail in Colorado gotta say the KLR is just darn right reliable and capable. Just love that it does highway so much better than others in its price range(at least for the older bikes all you T700 fans). After doing black bear pass with the KTM 525, Honda XR650L, DRZ400, and KLR650 I would go with the XR650 for the heavy off road. KTM had issues boiling the carb at high altitude after long days of riding. DRZ just struggled a little more on the power side but any experienced rider knows to keep your momentum and revs up. KLR gets through everything but some of the drops off the boulders are a lot for the stock suspension reason I finally upgraded to progressive springs. Hope one day to have a Pan America or Africa twin.

      If you go up to 450cc only to get it better on the highway… you are doing it wrong. As spite sad… Don't get a dirt-bike that is doing it best on the highway. You are not going to enjoy any off them on the highway. And why do you have to go so fast, that is what kills lots of people on bikes every year. And you in the US is like… if it only goes faster i will survive on the highway… No, that will kill you… It will only be more heavy, and if you have almost no skill… It is going to be much harder to handle. And not any better on the highway.

    Dual sports are a great choice to try a bit of every type of riding. I'm glad that neither Whitney or Spite put their phones on that mount on the 300L because it can break the stabilizer in your phone's camera (speaking from experience with that same bike and phone mount). Any insight if / when Rokform plans to make a vibration dampener attachment? The kowi isn’t good at anything, and the Honda can just barely go on the highway, but at least the Honda is based on a dirt bike frame making it actually half decent on the trails. For a dirt road that's as flat as a paved road like what y'all did, the KLR is definitely more chill. But that's a suspension and tire fix away for the CRF, and once things get hairy the CRF is the only one of the two you'd even want to TRY and get through with. When roads stop being roads, ADV bikes no longer can adventure.

    • @jediknight129
      @jediknight129 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      eh It depends how you set it up to be honest and where you ride. in places like Wales or the desert the weight carrying ability of a setup adventure bike is incredible and the difference between it and the crf isn't massive in the forests and valleys or the dunes.
      on motocross tracks and the offroad parks I'd rather have the CRF, for all day off road covering distance I'd take the KLR. I'd much rather do a Dakar style day after day off road ride on the Kilrea than the crf.
      if you're talking g tyre, wheel and suspension changes and setting up a bike to you that's a different thing entirely to just getting on a bike and going.

    Looked at both these bikes when earlier this year when I was looking for a bike to get back into the trails. The klr was just too heavy and I didn’t think the suspension would be up to what I wanted to do. The crf was lighter but I felt that it wouldn’t have enough power to keep me interested for long. I chose to get a ktm 690 enduro r and have no regrets. It has great suspension. It’s 100+ pounds lighter than the klr. It has 70 horsepower which is awesome on a bike that weighs just a little more than the crf. Highway speeds are where it shows it limitations though but off-road and around town it’s great 👍. If the 690 was just a little bit more stable at 70+ mph it would be my unicorn

    Anyone else with a 300L experiencing wheel hop up front? My brand new 300 Rally has an out of round wheel that bounces between 40-50mph. Taking it to the dealership next week but have read others have had a similar issue.

    It all depends on what you want the bike for. KLR on dirt is only good for flat of fire roads. Upgrade the tires on the CRF and go ride on single tracks with rollers. Whitney won't probably attempt it on the KLR, but will have a lot of fun on the CRF. I'm a beginner and man that Honda is so much fun on single tracks. BTW, I wouldn't even try it on a KLR either!

    You should have used the Rally since 1/3 the test was highway. But I agree with the power. We need a CRF350L with three hundred and fifty cc’s. Or a 6-speed fuel injected DR-Z!

    • @16driver16
      @16driver16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everyone's definition of "highway capable" is different. I'd say none of those bikes would be very comfortable at 75mph even if they're capable

      The klr has about 35% more hp than the crf. The crf vs klr comparisons are only ever done by people looking to make the klr look someone competent. 300cc vs 650cc, almost $1k difference in cost. The crf is punching above it's weight in every category and still is a better bike.

      I came to the comments to ask the same question. I bought a 300 Rally and after 1000 miles I traded it for the DR650. So far I have been happy with my decision but I would like to hear what others think.

    • @212driller
      @212driller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup dr650 is the 50/50 bike. It is however a bit heavy for anything moderate-hard difficulty off road, and hence I switched to a dr350 which is much more offroad capable and doesn't have me worried as much about being stranded stuck under a bike. The dr650 does however have the perfect amount of power with a dyno jet kit and air box mod. Enough to be really fun but not enough that you are going to kill yourself on it. It can also cruise on the hwy all day (assuming your butt can withstand it).

    But the KLR will run 70 all day while able to do dirt too. She is not experienced with the KLR but after a little while the KLR would not feel heavy. Especially for a 220 lb man like me.
    I just rode my Electra Glide 3 hours at 80 mph to get to the Northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Spent 3 days riding the entire length of the BRPwy and the 900 lb. Harley was not a problem to handle at all. Definitely would not do that on that little Honda.

    I went from a klx250 to a klr650 and its night and day. I loved my klx and I put a couple thousand miles on it and I've yet to reach the thousand mile mark on the klr. Going back to back, when I had them both, the klr made the klx seem worthless. I loved both bikes and wouldn't mind getting another klx, but not anytime soon
