@@jonwoodworker It looks like the stock KLR skidplate? Those don't cover the entire engine. I think an aluminum plate like you mention would have saved the engine. I know on DR650's the full-cover plate is important, as the drain plug can catch on stuff and break the case.

I kept my 2009 KLR in the backyard of my Houston residence. It spent 36 hours as a submarine under 4 foot of water during Hurricane Harvey as I was unable to move it to high ground since I was out of town at the time. I ended up filing a claim, settled for about the same price as I paid for it new in 2011, bought it back from the insurance company for $100 bucks, cleaned her up properly and rode it 2 more years. I wanted a KLR for a few years and finally got one in September. It's everything I thought it'd be; big, heavy, awkward, and unrefined. And I'm never getting rid of it 😄
It'll "break in" and get more torquy around 6k miles. Then you'll hear it start to really thump. Or that's how my 2012 was. I was underwhelmed the first 4k miles. Then again i put 6k on in 3 months. Royally screwed with the dealer when i brought it back for "free first service" (500 mi) the day after i bought it. Yes i kept it below 3000 rpm/45 mph.
Went to a rally awhile back where one of the guys set his KLR on fire riding up a steep single track. The gas overflow tube had come off allowing gas to spill out on the motor. Anyway they riding group put out the fire with dirt and then hot wired the bike so it could be ridden back to camp. The seat was partially burned up, some of the wiring was toast, and the rider's gear had some scorched places. BUT he rode it back to camp after a fire that would have turned a Beemer into junk.
I'm still riding my 06. I've modified (Many) it to suit my riding style, which is a lot like those in the video. It's the most comfortable bike of the 9 that I own. Too many mods to list here, but let's just say I know my KLR intimently. 685 cc balanced and ported. Even converted to kickstart JIC. Wish I could post a picture for you guys. It's still a classic Beauty!
Wanted one for over 20 years. About two years ago, began saving every penny I could and one year ago began scanning cycletrader for one. Gave three bikes serious thought, Husqvarna 401 scrambler(nice, but no used), Suzuki sv650(reliable, ubiquitous) and my fave, the klr. Found a 2017 with 4000 miles for 5g and now ride it daily. Neither bike ever broke down leaving us stranded and pushing our way home . Wear and tare items and changing the oil for my dad. I miss those times so much .
I've broken 2 KLR 650's since 2001, both did over 100,000km though. They both lasted longer and went further than any of my friends ktm's, XR's, a TT and a DR. Yes they are heavy and vibrate like nothing else but took more punishment than any other bike I've known. One of them took me across the Simpson desert and back (That's across Australia and back). They both died on the highway doing speeds that would get you in jail anyway, rebuilds are expensive but are both now 705's and the 2001C model one has bottom end power like a train, can't stall it if I tried. Spoke with my contacts back in Quebec to find out what has happened to Ryan and Co. Turns out they are deep in contract negotiations for the new year. Sounds like they are down to the end game with the usual stumbling blocks. For example Fortnine is insisting on Tim Hortons coffee on the shoots. Ryan wanted Starbucks but was willing to settle for Blenz. Next up was poutine, Currently Fortnine flys out poutine from Casse-croûte Pierrot in Quebec city. They have now offered a small A&W poutine. The guys want at least a Costco poutine. Last on the list is beer. Fortnine says Molson Export(good enough for head office means good enough for the west coast) Ryan offered to wash the bikes with it and asked for craft beer from the Okanagan Valley. Fortnine countered with Dow Ale. That was considered a hostile move and the negotiations got heated. Will update when I hear more.

@@mikethetexan76 Lol, really that's awesome? For someone who knows jack shit about oil, why is Rotello for diesel trucks? What's different with those guys? Likewise, what does MA Approved mean? And can Rotello seize up motorcycle engines?
@@MrCODEmaster00 Motor oil is made to different standards for different uses. Regular car oil has additives that are not compatible with the clutch on most motorcycles, so motorcycles have to use oil made to a different standard. Rotella does not contain these additives and does meet the standard (JASO MA) for motorcycles. You'll find many, many satisfied Rotella/motorcycle users. I have not heard of a bike seizing because of it. If you are considering it, however, you should do your own risk/cost-benefit analysis.
Having owned two of these mules... I can confirm everything in this video is true. Even the doohickey... even on the newer model! But perhaps it's greatest value is the aftermarket is massive. There are no shortage of mods, farkles and upgrades one can do to these things. Everything from way better breaks to larger displacement heads for a few more ponies. I might own another some day, just for nostalgia sake. But it's really not a very good motorcycle at anything in particular. But it is cheap, and you can make if your own. The community is awesome, and you can get to the top of the same hill at a tenth of the price they are asking for those BMWs, but with much less snobbery and more camaraderie.
You know... It's ehxuasting having to say this, because the engineers SHOULD know this. But they needed to make a KLR two cylinder. They need to make the exact same bike, the same exact crappy engine, and make it a parallel twin. By just making it into a paralell twin, even if it's significantly heavier, and has the same crappy suspension, the engine would be able to produce 25 more horsepower, and it would almost double the horsepower. It could be tuned to 75 horsepower instead of 44 horsepower. Why is it better? A twin can be run at much lower RPM's, well below idle, without stalling, and you can also run it at way, way, way higher RPM's, because the pistons are half as big, and the valves are half as big, so you have exponentially less stress at high RPM's, which also means a long engine life. But most importantly, parallel twins sound amazing, and are FUN!!! FUN!!

I feel like you guys made this episode especially for me. I’ve been riding my ‘06 KLR almost daily for the past fourteen years. I have about 68,000 miles / 109,435 kilometers on mine, and it still runs and handles as good as the day I bought it. I love riding my KLR SO much! It is super reliable, stable, predictable, powerful, and comfortable. I use Shell Rotella in my diesel truck, but never knew you could use it in a gasoline engine. Can you really use it in the KLR? It hurt seeing you guys abuse your KLR, but that was a testament to its reliability. Happy Trails
Heck yeah, I run Rotella T6 in my Saab turbo. It's a good turbo oil, but the thing with trucks now, it's designed to be a very durable oil for trucks since they run so much. Oil is oil but fuels differ. I suppose being a liquid cooled bike it can run thinner oils. What are the specs in the owners manual?

Running a KLR low on oil is a surefire way to burn out your crank bearings.... hope it wasn't for long. It's fixable if your bike burns a lot of oil though, a 685 kit will clean it up.

FUN!!

The god damn quality of these videos has no right to be this good, the script, the transitions, the framing of the scene. I salute you gents on a job well done. Truly this is what the review format should aspire towards.
The replay value of this video is amazing. I've watched 6 times by now.
The most reliable engine I've ever had was a Kawasaki and I've had multiple if every major brand and about 5 China brands the Kawasaki engine wasnt great but it always started no matter what temp what torture
"Here fluffy fluffy fluffy,Free mod" I died laughing 😂
"Ho-ho-hooooooooooooh shit" got me.
The Hilux of motorcycles. Not fast, not fancy, but absolutely unkillable haha.
I have been obssessed about klr650 this year. Its my new year's resolution, buy one. I have never learned to ride yet I want the KLR to be the one learn with and own.
You'll love it👍
It's a perfect starter bike, if your tall enough.
Just buy a dr650 or xr650l
Exactly what grant said, it was my first road legal bike and I still have it and love it
Treat mine like shit and it performs beautifully. Love my fat beast. I keep up with all the smaller bikes on trails it's all in the rider.
This was so good. Especially in the cinematic context. Give us more of these.
When I was 13 My very first bike was a 1984 (pretty sure that was the model year) self mixing 2 stroke KDX 80, I went through a few bikes after that that really held no special place in my heart like the first one, but my last bike was the KLR, I had it for a few years but then sold it for the extra cash to put towards a car, I regret that decision to this day.
..hey, never to late!!...
Im loving the classical art as an intro to subsections ! Very very nice! You are killing it ! Best produced motorcycle videos i've seen for a long long time. Better than most if not all i've seen on tv ( havent watched tv for 5 years)
I had a 2007 KLR 650, Loved it!!! They say that the KLR was never great at anything but did EVERYTHING any other bike couldn't do. I miss my KLR after watching this great vid!
Basically a Nokia 3310, can't kill it and if you do replacement parts are cheap and new ones also aren't expensive!
New ones are no longer produced.
Seems like everyones loosibg some lbs lately
Gotta love the 3300 series
The bore is super hard, not anyone can bore it out if you drop a ring and scratch it up. That adds $ to a rebuild, cost me $2K for a bottom end rebuild alone. Oversized piston sure added some bottom end power though, easy 3rd gear power mono's (I say with a smile).
@@freedom24v86 With new ones I should've clarified second hand :p
Call it a "new old" one haha
