They sure pegged Billy/Shazam perfectly.
Once again, the secret to the show was in hiring writers that were from the comics They know the characters because they helped define them- so they're true to the comics.
The gorilla in this episode is not Gorilla Grodd but Mallah. The scientist who would one day become known as the Brain (his name has never been revealed) experimented on animals to raise their intelligence. In one of his experiments, he captured a gorilla and raised its I.Q. to the genius level of 178. He named the gorilla Monsieur Mallah and educated him for almost a decade. The scientist originally planned to implant his own brain within Mallah's body, but decided against it after bonding with the gorilla, eventually making him his personal assistant. You were right when you remembered them from My Adventures With Superman.
They also dated in the comics
Fun Easter Egg: When Shazam/Capitan Marvel names the tiger at the end of the episode Mr. Tawney, its a reference to Tawky Tawny who is an anthropomorphic tiger who appears as a supporting character of Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family in superhero/talking animal comic book stories published by Fawcett Comics and later DC Comics.
In terms of their reaction to the mole you gotta remember, they’re kids. Artemis is 16, KF is 15 at this point, Robin is 13, Miss Martian is the equivalent of 16 (I think she’s biologically 60, it’s brought up in a future episode), Superboy is literally 5 months old (with severe anger issues) and Aqualad is 17. Their reactions are what I’d expect from kids.
Especially on the heels of a traumatic event. Remember, at the end of it they straight up lost that one. If their opponents had wanted them dead, they'd be dead. It's all the more understandable they'd be pissed and upset until they had a chance to really calm down and rebalance themselves.
(Fortunately they were a secondary concern, and if the villains behind everything even thought of them they seemed to have decided "you know, we've gotten what we wanted out of this one. Let's not make half the greatest heroes in the world out for our blood by murdering some of their nearest and dearest.")
I think KF is 14 the first half of the season until a certain episode later if I’m not mistaken
@@packedentertainment2866 thought it was his 16th birthday because he dad asked about going to take his drivers test
@@packedentertainment2866 when they ask about who the leader should be KF says to Robin that he is 13, and Robin replied that KF is 15
@@julespdx1230 oh 😅
Monsieur Mallah and The Brain even show up in Doom Patrol, a definitive show to watch.
That cast is amazing, I adore Matt Bomer as Negative Man. The show's take on body horror with Elasti-Woman is creative, and seeing Brendan Fraser in the role as Robotman is incredible. AND we get a hot Cyborg, so it's definitely a win.
The show is both dramatic and weird. But the chemistry between such a great ensemble of reluctant heroes really sells it. They face off against the most bizarre collection of villains in DC's early history.
No. That show started off promising the first few episodes but became easily one of the worst superhero shows ever made. That show is just chaos & not in a good way. Worse than She-Hulk imo
It’s one of the best superhero shows ever and the funniest
They also show up in the Teen Titans and My Adventures With Superman shows.
I heard Doom Patrol is pretty solid. Is it a long show?
Billy can go toe to toe w Superman as Shazam man
Even Superman by his lonesome could be taken out by a crafty villain - especially if using Kryptonite. I think Capt. Marvel is referred to as Earth's Mightiest Mortal in the comics, so despite his godly given powers, he was still susceptible to the machine that Monsieur Mallah used. The main reason the Justice League came together was them realizing there would be situations that one hero can't handle alone. Well, unless you're the Batman and even he knows he needs backup sometimes.
Captain Marvel is NOT the weakest member of the League. He possesses the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Herakles, the stamina of Atlas, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury (SHAZAM)
You forgot the Power of Zeus
2:07 mayor Hamilton Hill was not a hunter in the scene. Here’s a little history fact for you, Theodore Roosevelt, once when he was hunting with someone a “guide” if you will, brought him an animal that was collared, and on a chain for him to shoot, Theodore Roosevelt refuse saying this is not real hunting. Animal a question if I’m not mistaken, bear cub.
The thing I like about the show is that each episode is a stand alone story but each episode builds upon the previous ones.
Think thats my favorite part about it. Singlular stories that connect to a larger whole
I just realized this is the first episode the Team has fought together since episode 6! Episode 7 Robin wasn't in it. Episode 8 was all Aqualad, Episode 9 Aqualad was KOed, Episodes 10-12 were just pairs. It's not a complaint just an observation I never realized till now
Capt. Marvel: on this team, he would be the last line of defense, but he's the first one captured 😩
So I know everyone is hard on the Team for their reaction, but remember they are teenagers and it was a great excuse to see Aqualad take charge and shut them up. Also I liked Superboy's mini arc. His overprotectiveness was both annoying and sweet. You have to remember he's never lost anyone nor been in a relationship so its good for them to go over these things and they thankfully wrapped it up without it being to annoying and Superboy learned to not be too over protective with his new girlfriend.
FYI the name captain marvel was taken by marvel in 2012 so he's no longer allowed to be called that and is now known as shazam.
I was wondering why they called him Capt Marvel!
Almost but not quite. Back in the 70s (I think) DC sued Fawcett claiming Captain Marvel was a duplicate of Superman. Fawcett won the court case, but got bought out by DC at the end of it. In the meantime, Marvel comics decided that it did them a disservice for a competitor to own the rights to the name Captain Marvel. So, they rushed their own version into publication.
.
Marvel's version was the Kree warrior Mar-Vel. He had flight, durability, strength, and energy blasts. When he changed his "nega-bands" (wrist bracelets) together he traded places with teenage Rick Jones. So, one of them was in the real world while the other was trapped in the Negative Zone. Sound familiar?
.
Anyway, long story short, DC owned the copyright on the original Captain Marvel while Marvel owned the trademark. For decades, Marvel kept an active character using the name either in their own title or as an Avenger. While DC used their version strictly on teams like the JLA or JSA, keeping his name out of advertising or cover prominence.
.
It wasn't until the New 52 that the character's name finally changed to reflect that his solo title was Power of Shazam. Also, when the MCU beat DC to making a Captain Marvel movie, that cemented the name change.
Funny you mention Grodd. He does appear in the shows Tie-In Comics as does Gorilla city and one of my favorite DC Gorillas Congorilla. They actually tie in Gorilla city nicely with the show's lore. I don't want to spoil anything but it is a good read.
I'll check it out! I've always found Grodd to be an interesting character
I don't comment often but your reactions are great it's obvious you vibe with the humor ,tone of the show which makes it a great watching experience.
I really appreciate you hanging out with me in these videos! Much love!
Mr Tawny is a Captain Marvel ally in the comics from the 40’s or 50’s
The Lore surrounds Capt Marvel goes deeper than I thought!
In this one the YJ team was driving me crazy with all that petty bickering about how Aqualad hid the fact that there is a mole on the team from them and nearly screwed up that jungle mission. I was so glad when Aqualad finally made them stop and focus on the mission and saved it for when it was over. Afterwards he explained everything they decided to keep him as their leader after all and as you saw Shazam/Captain Marvel is really a 10 yr old kid named Billy Batson. Anyway just wait until you see the next episode!
Shazam is not the weakest in the league he’s one of the strongest next to Martian manhunter, captain atom, and Superman. Batman and green arrow are the weakest.
I feel the opposite of what you feel about Artemis. I think the Reds episode was to kinda take that worry away imo. We saw some backstory of her with Jade/Chesire being revealed to be her sister. If she was the mole then she would’ve let the team get killed but she stayed to save them, I think that’s proof enough that she canna be trusted. I won’t spoil anything though, can’t wait for you to see what’s to come because you definitely aren’t ready & would never guess what’s gonna happen soon hahaha
True! Im quickly changing my tune around Artemis as she continues top prove herself to the team
Yes they are sisters, not cousins
Yes I love this series! Feeling the aster now!
The aster is insane rn!
So , I take it, you might not have seen the movie.. Planet of the Apes (remake or original)....I bring that up, cuz, there is almost a direct quote from the movie when KF said "keep your hands off her, you dang dirty ape" in the planet of the apes movie they said "damn" not dang..
And when this show was airing in real, I actually perfered Aqualad as leader of the team than to Robin as Robin never struck me as the leader type, unlike Batman.
Keep watching as things unfold with each passing episode....and the mole revealed is crazy!!! That's all I'ma say
I kinda think Shazam/"Captain Marvel " LET himself get captured in order to bring the team together to rescue him.
"Wisdom Of Solomon" and all that.
No, I think he wanted to save the tiger and didn't think things through
@@youtubeviewer4472 Also quite possible. Believe it or not, in the comics, one of his closest allies is a talking tiger named Tawky Tawny- which they even mention in this episode!
Nope. It’s Monsieur Mallah hahaha
The comic writers has a kind obsession on gorillas, there is Gorilla Grodd, Mallard and even Ultra Humanite becomes into a Gorilla, you only pic a hero and you gonna find some gorilla around.
The episodes get more intense and enthralling, the further you go. And Captain Marvel is a useful chaperone.
I think Aqualad made the best call he could have AND the others get to be a little upset about it. I think those emotions are complicated, especially on a team like this, so young, with your friends. It's intense.
Shazam got caught slippin
So Batman bossed Captain Marvel around when he first joined the team. Sounds to me like that makes him yet another kid that Batman has mentored in the super hero game. Who woulda thought mister scary-bat would be so good with kids (shout out to that Justice League Unlimited episode, you know the one). I suppose it makes sense, given the bat's own history as a child.
Aqualad is so much better than me cus watching this eps I was already crashing out and I'm not even there😭😭😭
Robin took Shazam! going with them as he didn’t trust them but in reality he just wanted to have fun with people that are close to his age since the league are all grown adults
Technically, Monseur Mallah and the Brain are more than friends...
Woop woop
Physically, Shazam is extremely powerful, but he's just inexperienced and a kid lol.
I almost forget that he's actually a kid 😅
Forgot: Marvel's got the power of Zeus, as well.
Captain Marvel is actually a child. About 10 or 12. When he says Shazam he turns into the adult Captain marvel and is as strong as (superman ,aquaman, wonder woman, powergirl, Martian Manhunter) but he retains a childlike mind still gullible and child like. That's why he is interested in hanging with the young justice crew.
I’m conflicted. On one hand, yes … Aqualad had good intentions. But on the other, what if the Reds really did go all out & kill them which they easily could have, it would’ve been Kaldur’s fault for not telling them the info about the mole so that they could be prepared. But then again … it would’ve alerted the mole if they are in fact on the team
I can def see both sides. He should've told them, but I can also see why he didn't. Its a tricky spot
Bruh, look up Captain Marvel vs Superman from the old JLU animated show. Bro ain't no joke.
I was not familiar with his game 😅
w friday
Need another episode tomorrow
Working on it!
I don’t think Shazam! Is the weakest on the league. That would have to go to Green Arrow or Black Canary or maybe even Hawkman who is just never cool in anything outside of the comics.
All I will say is you will hate yourself if you don't continue to watch at the bare minimum the end of season 2 No spoilers but it just keeps getting better from here.
Oh we're in it for the long haul now!
And beyond season 2
