  • We’re talking about wiring harness maintenance in this video from Partzilla.com. In this video, John will first guide you through some common wiring harness mistakes that can damage your wiring harness. We’ll talk about your battery connections as well as what your blown fuse is telling you, and how NOT to fix that problem.
    But what about if you have a wire that’s cut? Sometimes, replacing the entire wiring harness isn’t an option, so we’ll show you some ATV and motorcycle wiring harness repair tricks that can help you create a lasting, durable connection. We’ll also talk about why some connections might not get the job done.

    Glad the method I've been planning to use was the last one mentioned.
    Whole loom is failed on the steering pivot point in my bike. I have a lot of cut and joining to do ahead of me.

    I have used quick splice connectors because they were quick and easy.
    I stopped using those because of how damaging those things are, it cuts the wire making it thinner and is very inviting for corrosion.

    You mentioned to add a relay? After some research, I am guessing a 30amp relay to hook up grip heater, extra USB outlet & LED bar lights? What parts would I need? It’s going on a Polaris Sportsman 850

    Hi John. I think the title "how to repair" is mistaken, or maybe the video is way too short. I expected something about checking continuity, checking insulation, spray cleaning connectors, ...
    Congrats anyway, what it is already advised in the video is very useful (ie battery terminals),...thanks... keep going !!!

    I don't agree using solder. There is some chance to do a cold joint and it can break eventually because of vibrations. Open barrel splices with the proper crimp tool and some shrink tube is my go to

    Great video but how do you repair a wire that breaks off less than 1/4 inch from the ecu plug? Is there a way you can pull the connection out of the pug to make it longer and then reinsert back into plug?

    I'm probably anal when it comes to wiring but I also add a small dab of contact grease on the connection after soldering and then slide over my shrink tubing. Just makes me feel like it's bullet proof then. 20 odd years doing it like that and never had one fail. So many people using butt connectors on their bikes and wondering why after a few years it's worse than it was before and ruins that section of cable completely. Really love your videos fair play👍

    John I have a Honda Foreman 400. I can start it and run for several minutes before it suddenly kills and won’t start again while hot. I have gone through the carburetor, fuel lines, etc and can’t find any issues there.
    I have also changed the spark plug and spark plug wire but the issue is still not resolved.
    Do you know of any specific areas in the wiring harness or other areas I should possibly check for this issue?

    Yeah my ATV has a wiring harness issue that has been holding me back.i can't use the keys Thay have hotwired my Beast. The keys hole is got the wires sticking out of it and I'm not sure what
    wire should i connect with. Yeah they really did a number on my quad.
    I really appreciate your time and consideration.i Hope you can help me out with this.
    I can get it to start but something is not right it's backfiring and won't ideal by its self.the wires on the key hole are touching together should that be like that? Should I take out the whole thing?

    Great video. I replaced a battery /solenoid and starter on a 700 grizzly. It ran for an hour and when I went to shut it off, it acted like I was trying to start it. I’m the field the battery tested .8 volts. After I put it on charge, it tested.0 volts. I have never seen a bad battery test .8 or 0. The stator was replaced by the dealer last year.
    When it failed there was quite a bit of heat . What say you?

    • @THEedcbb3
      @THEedcbb3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it only started playing up after you changed that battery + starter assembly, then the dealer's work sounds like it's fine
      If you know you got the terminals on battery & the 2 on the starter correct, then the stator replacement is a decent hint, cos it probably wasn't physical damage so most likely was from an excess power load further up the harness
      So check your electrical harness for any fragile/old wires or any worn ones, they're most likely shorting to other connectors or ground

    I had a rectifier burn out on my 2000 gsxr 750, I replaced it and when I hit the brights on the freeway the bike started smoking. One connection looked a Lil melted bit not enough to smoke. Well I found some junky lighting wiring in the back of the bike redid it bit now my rectifier isn't working.

    Grizzly 700. New starter, battery and solenoid . The stator was replaced last year by the dealer. After 30 min , I tried to shut it off and it acted like I was trying to start it. It ultimately shut off. The battery was dead. What say you ?

  • @travismauldin7194

    Yep, i always heatshrink butt connectors. you don't need to buy those butt connectors with the shrink tube already on them. you can buy good quality tubing from your part store, or online, slide it over the wire, crimp the 2 wires in the connector and slide the heat shrink tube over the butt connector and heat it and seal it.

    my suzuki RMX wiring harness is completely messed up from past owner. either indicators, brake light or headlight was working properly.

  • @49Roadmaster
    @49Roadmaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yupp! The only way to do a real repair. If you have an assortment in pile, a small trick to see if the shrink tubing is self sealing is to look inside the tubing and see if it is shiny. The self sealing material is basically a fine layer of glue stick glue.

    How many watts is your solder iron. And ,What is the proper solder to use. I learned the hard way about soldering copper water pipe, that you don’t go to Lowe’s to get your flux or solder. You go to the plumbing supply warehouse. Is electric wire soldering just as critical? I have actually tried it, and it was not as easy as you make it look...

    • @Adam-uu5pt
      @Adam-uu5pt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't tell you what the different types are, but I know using the correct type of flux and solder is very important with electrical

      if you don't have a solder iron or no experience in using it, but having a heat gun, go for raychem solder splice : th-cam.com/video/uhRCUAYoSXg/w-d-xo.html

      25W, and use 60/40 Rosin Core solder. Actually, don't, use crimp splice connectors. If you solder it, you create a hard point, and any flexing will eventually break the wire. If you look inside your loom, particularly where there are splitters for earths or lives for tail/park/number plate lights etc, you'll see they're all done with crimps instead of solder.

My bikes a used up clapped out rats nest, guy before me spliced in prolly every wire that had some power through it for whatever LED look at me lights or who knows what, id like to be able to rebuild the existing harness, creating a brand new one using the OEM connectors. Is there a kit to rebuild a 06 CBR 600RR? LOL

    soldering is not an acceptable repair for stranded wires especially in an engine bay.
