I bought this Honda a year ago brand new , (and I un-boxed it ) wheels were already installed! The wheels would lock up from day one, drove me nuts! And sure enough the keys were installed up side down from the factory! I reversed the keys flat side up ,and it works perfectly, no dragging when pulling backwards! Thanks!

I had to replace a dust seal on the axle. I reinstalled the key upside down. Been working on this trusty Honda for a week and I was befuddled what was wrong and I was just about ready to buy a new transmission.
So glad I clicked on your video! You just saved me A LOT of money! Thanks!

I didn't find the key upside down as you have. However I have found that Honda issued a recall due to the bushings on the rear axle are either too tight or just a plain bad design. The axle is plain steel and somehow it rusts and expands inside the plastic bearing/bushing housing on the height adjustment. Am going to contact a Honda dealer and see if replacement bushings/bearings are available. Hopefully I will post an update on what I find out.

The guy didn't even want to touch it. Plus he broke the rope started. Got mad at it and sold it to me with a Toro Personal Pace electric start mower for $30. That needs a bit of TLC as well.

Still having issues with mine, after trying multiple fixes from this and other vids. The Hondas are top rated and the best I've used when they work, but why are there 30 vids of wheel/trans probs on these mowers?? Best fix might be buy the extended warranty, which I did with another mower, but I ended up giving it to my neighbor b/c it was always in the shop! Repair was free but it was always having problems! Ended up getting an EGO electric with a great trans but doesn't cut strong like the double-blade Honda.

I have that same mower and was wondering if you have or have had a problem I have: 1. The deck height adjustment (particularly one of the rear wheels) pops out and drops to a lower level if you look at it wrong. Sometimes this happens without me noticing until I have cut a very uneven row. 2. I just noticed the wear on your two rear wheels are just like mine, very uneven, caused by bad toe and camber (Toe-In or Negative Camber) as if the weight of the engine is too great for the axle. I wonder if both of these problems stem from the flexible composite deck. It seems to be lacking enough rigidity. Your thoughts?

Home Garage I probably never head that, as did 99% of everyone else. I swear some times. Us Kids. I blame my medications now. Lol. Someone at the place it was set up missed that. As a dealer, that stuff is checked before it goes out the door. I used to work at a shop so I have witnessed a lot of stupidity. These big box stores sell crap now days. 99% of it is cheap MTD with someone elses label plastered on it. Unless you buy from a dealer and its professional grade, its junk. I know all this. I am good friends with many local small engine dealers and shops in my area. I had Cancer and had to close my shop. I still work on stuff, but its pick and choose now. Usually just friends and only enough to pay for my hobby.
The stress of owning a shop was bad enough, but to deal with the out right garbage they pawn off on the public now is pathetic. It keeps me busy so I shouldnt bitch, but come on! Prices for this trash just amazes me too. Parts have increased over the last year or two also. People stop getting them fixed and scrap them. I have a yard full of that shit too.

You might have accidentally turned the drive gear around. Is it only only or both wheels thats a problem?

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It may be the bushings in the axle supports . They are located at the height adjustment on the frame where the axle goes through. If you put everything back right and it still locks up, plan on replacing them. I have done 3 this summer and now have Another, plus my own. Sanding the rust off the axle is not enough. They will still bind up.

Nah somebody messed with it. Your mower has been heavily used and we can tell by the wear on your back and front wheels. Someone had an issue with the wheels before and took it apart and put it in backwards. I can't imagine that you would have suffered with that problem from the factory after all these years. At the Honda plant you know that installing that key properly would be a very big thing and as its being put together someone would have caught that and corrected it as it rolled down the assembly line.

If yours is the non-hydro model, People blame the dry axle bushings, but it more likely the clutch release lever on the transmission needs to be freed up, clutch cable hanging up, or return spring bad, or combination of all three. I just took mine apart, gave it a new cable and spring, got some light lube under the clutch lever and worked it back and forth till the clutch spring returned the lever with authority. Snap ring pliers, light grease, and 20 bucks of parts should cure it

Honda has an assembly plant in Australia.
If one looks at the globe, it can be seen that Australia is actually up-side-down.
Hence, pins that were installed correctly in the Australian plant ... will not function properly in the Northern Hemisphere.

Ok, good stuff, here’s my problem. I replaced the wheels on my old Honda HRB 475. It is certainly possible I replaced a pinion gear in reverse.
The punch mark should be ? Right outside, Left inside.
Anyway I without this knowledge the mower wouldn’t turn right. I messed around swapping pinion gears , then it wouldn’t turn left.
Exasperated I found the advice re the punch marks on the pinion wheels, fitted them Right out, Left in, both wheels made lovely clicky sound in reverse, lawnmower turns beautifully both ways BUT NO DRIVE !! , what the hell is wrong now ??

The only thing good about Honda mowers is the motor. Everything else is over engineered and poorly designed. After four years with mine the rear wheels would lock up when trying to move it backwards. The “fix” required you to disassemble the entire rear end and transmission and all the hardware and bull shit clips. Then you have remove the drive shaft and sand it down to remove the scarring that occurs from regular use. Total crap. I got rid of it. There’s better options out there.
