    Video Tutorial shows a very common fix for your self propelled push mower not working right. Sometimes it's the belt, sometimes it's the gear mechanism inside the wheels, and sometimes it's just the wheels themselves... In this video, I show what happens to the wheels when they wear out and I demonstrate how to replace them.

    Thanks for the inspiration. Watched your video in the last hour and took the front drive wheels apart to check on the nylon gears. Each looked perfect and like new. Hi. Wish to expand that in addition to the required cleaning of the grass clippings, the mower became quite slow. After a week of almost caving to take in for repair, kept watching other videos. This issue surfaced after I pushed the mower into a bush. The cause is an open part of the mower that regulates the mower speed with a soft metal and a spring. This metal became bent and caused the change of speed. After bending it back, good as new. Search for slow lawnmower for many videos on this topic.

    I figured out that it is very important that the plastic dirt/debris cover behind the wheel is in good condition. When excess dirt and lawn debris can get up in there, it helps wear out the plastic gear faster. I was fixing up a used mower I bought once and the front drive wheels were the originals. On the right side, the dust cover was busted and the gears were full of junk. The plastic teeth were severely chewed up. The left side dirt cover was good and the plastic teeth were in good condition.
    You have to remove the small drive gear to replace the plastic cover, but it was worth it for me. I am restoring another used mower now with the same issue (I wonder: Why is it the right side again?). I needed a small gear puller to get the right side gear off, because there was excess rust on the shaft the gear slides onto. I believe The broken dust cover contributed to to the rust problem.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe the right side gear failing is due to the direction the owner usually goes around the yard? Just a theory.... Especially if it's a hilly yard and the person is going with the hill instead of up and down....

    I haven’t read through the comments to see if this question has been asked, and I apologize if it has, but do the non-self-propelling wheels have the necessary gears too? In other words, can I simply switch the front wheels and back wheels or do new wheels need to be purchased? Obviously, I haven’t taken a look at the wheels yet for myself lol.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No that's a very good question. I actually don't remember if the NON Propell wheels have the ring gear on the inside rim or not. I am guessing they don't. The only way to make sure is to pull one of them off and see if it's smooth on the inside, if so, then it's not going to work. Or you could take down the model number and go over to a website like www.partstree.com and look at the parts breakdown and see if the non self propelled wheels have the same part number as the self propelled ones, that's another way! Hope this helps..

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  ปีที่แล้ว

      Without seeing it I can't say for sure. A lot of the time there is a wheel on the self propell handle that you can adjust to tighten the belt.. But as for snapper, I don't know if they do that or not..

    I got a rear propelled honda and even when the lever is pulled the axle will no engage. Sometimes I can press the level manually with a lever AND i CAN GET THE AXLE TO MOVE. bUT MOST THE TIME IT WILL NOT MOVE THE AXLE. Do you think it is the main gear drive inside the casing? It looks fine, just does not turn axles.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm. I don't understand the question fully.... Could it be the lever to engage the self propel isn't pulling hard enough? Could the belt be stretched? or the Cable is loose?

    The new gears will be gone again in few months. You need to look into why the gears are chewed up first! I think you have stuck & not disengaging self-repelled mechanism. Lubrication may fix it.

      @JLPicard440  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably they are saturated with dirt and dust. I don't remember but I think I suggested grease in the video, but I think that might make it worse.. dirt loves to stick to grease... The dust cover on the wheel might not be fitting correctly...

      Plastic , reverse n heavy bags eat em up. People don’t realize that when that mower jerks them it’s pulling 175 pounds give or take n all the abuse typical people don’t ever think about. Most have just come to terms with “ well it did work “ n they’re ok with that. And end up pushing n having lil assistance if any from SP.

      Take a Bath Productions yea that’s a tough one right ? Metal to metal ? Or dirt magnet ? 😔. Silicon spray maybe ? Or drop of 3-1 oil maybe? I understand why these gears strip but I guess I’d like seeing better material in the higher end units too. Is there an aftermarket that could increase life of hub gear ?

  • @JimTMcDaniels1

    Great Trick!
    Also be sure to tell people to Silicone Spray their pull rope. Simply pull it out all the way and use a piece of plastic to spray and wipe it into the rope length.

    I'm glad I found this. My Honda mower has been making a rattling sound, and the right rear wheel is slipping/spinning around a lot. Maybe if I replace both rear drive wheels, as the mower is nine years old. It's not that the wheels are not turning. It seems like left wheel is slow, and right wheel spins or slips around too much.

    My mower (Garden Master YGLM18HS) is fairly new but I'm having this issue with the drive mechanism. I get a clattering noise when I engage drive but those wheel teeth look fine. It could be the belt but I can't figure out what size I need. There is a parts list that says the belt is a Z686 but I have no idea if that would mean anything to anyone. There are no markings on the old belt.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI, that make and model doesn't come up on a google search. IS that a EU model? From the sounds of it, it doesn't sound like the belt. Can u look underneath and see the belt? If it's tight enough when the drive lever is pressed down..?

    • @Phiyedough
      @Phiyedough 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was bought in Hungary but does have a B&S engine. I looked at the clutch and gears and they look OK but I did find I could pull the belt round by hand without the engine turning. There is a tensioner spring that pulls the whole gearbox out of line with the motor pulley. This is not ideal as the drive will get less efficient as the pulleys get further from parallel.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phiyedough Yes that's the case sometimes where the belt is loose. But when you engage the lever it tightens everything up.. I usually clamp the lever down so I can turn the mower over and look to see if the belt tightened up.. (obviously with the engine off!) I even like to remove the spark plug wire just to make sure there's no problem with an accidental starting..

      I think around $20, but not 100% sure if my memory is working.. If you take the model number of the mower, you can usually go to www.partstree.com and lookup that model. Using the parts breakdown you can get the part number of the wheel, and then use that part number on Amazon or something like that to price it.

    I hope you see this msg .. 👍🏼
    I have a standard Yard Machine B&S lawnmower, FW drive self propelled works intermittently 🤔 it will work for a short few... then stop, work then stop ... the belt looks decent .. I’ve not checked the wheels ... what all would you suggest

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cali.. definitely check the wheels. If the wheels check out ok, can u determine if the belt has enough tension? If its neither of those u could have a bad transaxle.. but I would consider that as a last resort.. If u have a belt cover, u might be able to remove it and run the engine and see if anythings slipping.. being careful not to let anything near any moving parts! That won't work on certain models.. depending how the belt cover is made.

    • @calidazeable

      Thank you for your response & suggestions ... 👏🏼... I watched your video as one other and learned how to take the front cover & blade off to check the belt --I also looked at my tires as you suggested
      ... I noticed a small worn rub on the belt 🤔 .. didn’t think this could affect it ...but decided to get a new one and try .. took me a substantial time to do ....but WHAMMO!!! ..👏🏼 it works GREAT now 😃
      .. it was the belt! My goodness it sat for 2 yrs bc I thought it was toast ... and I had no clue what to look at ...
      I sO appreciate your advice, as I was encouraged to try all .. I dig learning all new things for myself

As it ended up one of my problems was in the shifter on the pushbar. I got it apart and put it all back together except for a bobbypin-type spring. Haha, spent 20 or so minutes trying to figure how to put it back in without a solution. Its a detent to position each gear. Guess I'm going to have to jam a screwdriver in there for a gear selector.
