Nicely done. Was changing my drive pulley and wanted to make sure to get little Woodruff key back in correct location and orientation. Also took pulley off too fast not realizing sides were different. Checking that too. Video answered both. You probably have another video but i had a whale of a time getting that crazy belt changed. Had to remove entire underdeck guard system to have a prayer of accessing rear pulley. Wound up cutting the old belt and FINALLY got new one forced thru with good old bloody knuckles. Hoping I didn't damage the new belt!

I would never of thought the belt would make a grove inside the pulley - but inspection leads to solving the problem - good video - thanks for showing .

$35.00 is worth every penny to get the mower to push itself. I have one similar to that mower that I paid $400.00 for at a big box store. When my dad died, I inherited his 1988 Honda HR194 mower. It has no engine brake but it has a control for the blade clutch. It still starts by the second pull. Gotta love it.

I am glad I subscribed to your great videos, always nice to learn more.
Dony I noticed something that may help you and/or others when working with the keys on shafts. This lesson I learned from my dad and has always come in handy. When removing a key (either type) you can grip one side of the key with a pair of diagonals / side cuts and squeeze just a little bit as you raise or lower the handles to get the key out easily.
When putting the key back in and is too loose to stay in you can use the ball end of a ball peen hammer and tap a time or two right over the key slot in the shaft. Then you can tap the key into the slot where it should stay firm while you install the pulley or sprocket.
Keep up the great videos for all of us.

I have an HRR216 that is about 15 years old. It is rusted but not busted. It’s not self propel (huge mistake) but it rolls very easily and never fails to start. I use it Only when the grass is out of control or I have been out of town. Other than that I use a Kobalt 2x24v it’s “ok”.

Thanks Don for this video. I have a hrr216 and I have been chasing what's wrong with it for a year. I know I need to remove the transmission and polish out the shafts so it is easier to pull backwards. It also will not pull out the slack in your drawers, which means the self propel part of it is mostly me. In South Carolina the primary component of any soil is sand and I am sure the sand has sandblasted the pull. I replaced the belt last spring but I am sure it is worn out by now. I got so tired of pushing that chunk of metal around the yard that I bought a Snapper SPX this fall. It has no problems moving around the yard but it probably will after a few years in this sand.

John Clarke Its the half moon keys in the wheels. If they are in wrong way, expect issues like that. Also make sure the flats in the gear is facing the back, not the front. Guys are ALWAYS putting those things in bass ackwards.

  • @aleblanc3547
    @aleblanc3547 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Dony. I have this very mower and would never have guessed the belt (rubber) could wear out the pulley (metal.) I'm guessing it might have been over tightened at one point, but then again my yard is flat as water. These are great mowers, the best I've owned. There are two problems however. The wheel bearings, which are not sealed usually don't last more than a season or two. The other involves a spring and gear on the drive shaft that mimics a bad transmission. Both are easy fixes, thank goodness.

Oh...that makes sense. Come to think of it, if the soil is sandy, it would act like a rubbing compound. Those two blades really pull hard to lift the grass (and dirt) up. Thanks again, Dony!!

what is the expected life of the driver pulley? my lawn mower is in warranty. Currently dealing with Honda and its dealer, who are giving me a hard time.
I have the same symptoms you mentioned - tires would not rotate. They do lock though when I pull the mower back. the belt is okay and is tight. Thanks. Excellent video.

A question about a Honda mower with a blade clutch - model HRR2169VYA - the blade holder attaches to the driven side of the blade clutch, so it spins freely from the crank when the clutch is not engaged. Therefore, you cannot tighten the nut holding the blade holder to the crank by blocking the blade. To tighten that nut, you have to block the crank from turning - I removed the plug and inserted a strip of coarse rag into the cylinder to block the piston. Am I correct, and is there a better way? Thanks for the video.

I just did a engine swap on my mower that Is self propelled I put the pulley off the old engine onto the new engine but the shaft is longer on the new engine and the bolt doesn't seem to thread in the shaft I'm thinking on just welding the pulley on it for safety I'm just going to tack it so I can't still remove if I have to . Hi Dony. I've looked all over and don't see a video that involves removing and replacing the belt on the transmission pulley for the HRR216 you show here. I can't figure out how to remove the belt guard on that one unless it's with a super thin wrench to reach the one nut under that pulley. Do you have a video for that one or can you tell me if that is indeed the secret to getting the belt back on? Thanks.

Sand is the big reason those get chewed down. I noticed people living in sandy areas have more wear on things like pullys, belts and especially blades. Like a sand blaster, it wears away the metal fast. I have seen blades worn down to nubs in my area. Air filters are usually clogged right up on these mowers too. A nice green lawn doesnt wear a mower like that. I have one in now where both ends of the blade are poined down, so the blade is now U shaped. If you want I can send you a picture. Thats from mowing Sumac and other woody type stuff. The woman admitted she uses her Toro as a brush buster. Talk about abuse. Sad part is its an electric start mower with the handle operated drive( I hate fixing those).

The center bolt is not metric is 3/8 x 24 (fine thread). So rather than use a loose fitting 5/16 bolt just get a 3 inch long 3/8 x 24 bolt. and thread it in as far as you can.

More work which is unnecessary... should only take a minute to remove pulley with loose bolt...

I would like to point out that some manufacturers specify which side to turn the mower onto for bottom end service. In these cases, to do otherwise may result in temporary oil burning, flooding, etc on startup.

+Sam P on Honda OHC motors they say you should turn them so that the muffler is facing the ground and the carburetor is up in the air..

Honda makes cheaper nowadays, older model like hr214 don't need any kinds of replacement after 30 years. They were made in Japan.

No one person who replaces the belt has covered belt length ,this we have to guess or flip coin to determine .
