Another nice reaction. I’m enjoying watching your voyage of discovery with Kate Bush. To add a little more detail to one of the earlier comments (gleaned from various sources), The Man With The Child In His Eyes was mostly written when she was 13 years old and finished off when she was 15. It was one of three songs (Saxophone Song being another) that David Gilmour paid for her to have professionally recorded and produced in 1975 to serve as a demo tape when she was 16. After hearing the tape EMI signed her up when she was still 16 and gave her time to develop her skills. It was those demo recordings that appeared on the album. So people watching the music video for ‘The Man…’ are seeing an 18/19 year old Kate but hearing a 16 year old. Also to say, because a lot of people don’t realise this, that Kate is portraying a ghost in Wuthering Heights, hence the additional vocal inflections in her high range singing. I look forward to you being able to show some of her videos.
EMI were terrified of her because she hired an army of lawyers right away when they signed her. Her family was musical, her two brothers were also brilliant , her family had money, and she had written 200 songs by the age of 16!! She wrote "Man with the Child in His Eyes" at the age of 13...no shit. This was recorded in 1977 and released Feb 1978. The record company handed her total creative control and did not dare mess with her....they thought a 16 year old would be easy to control.....ooops!!
One additional thing to mention about Wuthering Heights is that EMI wanted another track from the album "James And The Cold Gun" to be Kate's debut single, Kate fought for Wuthering Heights instead because she wanted her debut single to make an impact, so in the end the executives at EMI caved into her choice but only because they thought that it would be a massive flop and they thought that it would teach her a lesson. Instead Kate was proved to massively correct as Wuthering Heights became a huge worldwide hit, charted high up in many countries including reaching number 1 spot in a number of them, including the UK, thus becoming the 1st female artist to have a self written song reach number 1 in the UK singles chart. You are correct this was Kate's biggest hit single, until RUTH exceeded it in terms of worldwide chart performances both in terms of top 20 and number 1 in a greater number of countries. P.S. The vocal performance on Wuthering Heights was recorded in one take.
"The Man ...", was written when she was 13, she also plays the piano on this (and on nearly all her works). This was one of the first 3 songs of hers to be recorded professionally (at Air Studios, London). She was just 16 when singing both this and "The Saxophone Song" track also on the album. I think knowing the story of Wuthering Heights (a brutal, jealous, revenge, love epic, by Emily Bronte) helps with the appreciation of the song. A good way to 'get' it is to see the original inspiration for the song. KB said when she was 12 she caught just a few minutes of a tv adaptation - the scene where Cathy, the ghost, is at the window. This image stuck with her and when this was re-triggered several years later she thought of writing this song from Cathy's ghostly POV. Here is a 2 minute clip of this ghostly window scene from some tv adaptations: th-cam.com/video/fSDsHwegsK4/w-d-xo.html
Wuthering Heights burst on to our screens in early 1978, (followed by The Man with the Child) and went straight to No 1 in the UK, during a busy period of classic songs, lots of competition. Her visual image (worth watching the Version 2 video) with such deep imagery and complex musical structure marked her out as worth following for a lifetime... so I did, and though she makes us wait for years, she has never disappointed, not once, not once in 44 years... You might notice a lot of Kate Bush fans appearing in your comments, she still inspires...
Kate Bush is known for becoming the characters that she sings about. In Wuthering Heights she IS Cathy, the ghost that comes back to haunt her former lover Heathcliff, which is why she sings in such a high pitch. The music video also adds to this effect as she appears like a spirit. If you are interested in learning more about Kate Bush, the BBC aired a documentary about her in 2014 which is well worth a look....th-cam.com/video/c4sLwt8mhZs/w-d-xo.html.
Nice to see someone with an open mind and the musical knowledge, insight and wisdom to seperate the superficial from the authentic ones. As you mentioned a rabit hole lies before you. Enter the world of Kate Bush, the storyteller who is a master of metafors and musical twists not often witnessed. Her compositions vary so much, that without hearing her voice you would not directly link them to Kate, at first listen. A few examples: The Kick Inside opposed to Big Stripey Lie Nocturn opposed to Rubberband Girl Hello Earth opposed to Wild Man Sunset opposed to The Sensual World Wow opposed to The Dreaming, to name but a few... and the list is endless. There is a thing with Kate that must not be overlooked. The last seven songs from her album Hounds Of Love, together creating this conceptpiece called The Ninth Wave about a woman, victim to a shipwreck, finding herself alone and vulnerable in the vast ocean. The story depicts the horror and fears that this person endures while drifting off. The story ends not like you would expect. Enjoy! I forsee a long period of joy, jawdropping moments and utter thrill for you. Please continue to discover her art and let us be witnesses to that.
Wuthering Heights was her first single. She insisted that it be the first single over the record company's objections. Also, she did the vocal one take. She sang the song in shrillish tone because she is a ghost in the song, who is haunting Heathcliff. She recorded a more straight-forward vocal in 1986 for the compilation album, The Whole Story. It is called Wuthering Heights (New Vocal), and is worth a listen.
Although Kate would go on to produce all her own albums, a shout out must go to the producer of this, and her second album, Andrew Powell, who could was also responsible for the many orchestral arrangements on these records. She could not have found a better teacher than Powell, with whom she was paired by her mentor, one Mr David Gilmour, who first discovered her when she was just 16 years old. She wrote Man With the Child in His Eyes when she was 13, and the version on the album was recorded when she was 16. She wrote Wuthering Heights at 17, and two years later, as her debut single, it reached number one in the UK. She never really made much of an impression in the US, so it's really strange, 44 years later, to hear Americans discovering her, and being blown away by her. She really did carve her own path, so you have an interesting journey ahead of you!
The reason Kate Bush sings with that voice on Wuthering Hights, is because Kathy is a ghost returning to her lover. The verse, it's hard on the other side from you, let's you know she is a ghost.
I am so happy that you have discovered the brilliance of Kate Bush. That made me subscribe to your channel. I have been a super fan of Kate Bush since 1979 there is so much more of her music for you to discover. It’s timeless.
I understand in Wuthering Heights the voice get high pitch does make you feel some kind of way. That's what made her stand out. At first it irritated people. But after another listen you become hooked. Check out the Whole Story Album New vocal of Wuthering Heights. She re-recordrd it with additional guitar and vocal. It's bloody amazing. The story line of both songs shows how intelligent Kate Bush is. Today and at the time of writing. Wuthering Heights new vocal is amazing. I absolutely love your channel. I know that you are not doing video reactions. But at some stage when you do. Please do her live performance of James and the Cold Gun. They certainly don't make musicians like her these days. This old school rock bands are amazing.
@@WhatTheHellEverything I second his nomination for the live version of "James and The Cold Gun" Unlike the album, it has the extended jam at the end of the vocals. I won't tell you about the rest because it'll spoil it for you. All I can say is that Kate's antics are very entertaining.
I like your mature songwriting comment about The Man With The Child In His Eyes that she wrote when she was 13 years old, recorded when she 16, and released when she was 19.
Nice reaction! You should also definitely react to Kate's more recent work. A lot of times people neglect her 21st century output (all 2 albums worth of it!) and stick to the 70s and 80s stuff. She was obviously brilliant back then, but sometimes late-career Kate Bush just hits different. I'd definitely suggest "A Coral Room" from her 2005 album "Aerial". It's a masterpiece of a song. Just Kate on the piano, magical stuff. And if you want something more rock, "Sunset" off the same album is another standout track. Perhaps another double reaction is in order? ;)
Please review the videos that go with these songs aswell. You then get to fall in love her music and her sheer physical presence via dance and mime. Rem just like her music her visual work is all her own, she sings as a character and then performs and becomes that character. (also she is a stunning beauty).
Sean K Actually Sean, the album containing this was released when she was 19 in early 1978 and "TMWTCIHE" was recorded 3 years before that when she was only 16. Dave Gilmour paid for that particular recording session in 1974 / 1975. She was 23-24 in the 1980s.

Hahaha as luck would have it, I DID! But only since about a week ago lol. I happened to see a live version of it. Thanks algorithm! That was one of the kickers that made me finally decide to start reacting to Kate Bush, was realizing the influence she had
“I must stop it, nevertheless!” I muttered, knocking my knuckles through the glass, and stretching an arm out to seize the importunate branch; instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand! The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed, “Let me in-let me in!” “Who are you?” I asked, struggling, meanwhile, to disengage myself. “Catherine Linton,” it replied, shiveringly (why did I think of Linton? I had read Earnshaw twenty times for Linton)-“I’m come home: I’d lost my way on the moor!” As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, “Let me in!” and maintained its tenacious gripe, almost maddening me with fear. “How can I!” I said at length. “Let me go, if you want me to let you in!” The fingers relaxed, I snatched mine through the hole, hurriedly piled the books up in a pyramid against it, and stopped my ears to exclude the lamentable prayer. I seemed to keep them closed above a quarter of an hour; yet, the instant I listened again, there was the doleful cry moaning on! “Begone!” I shouted. “I’ll never let you in, not if you beg for twenty years.” “It is twenty years,” mourned the voice: “twenty years. I’ve been a waif for twenty years!” Thereat began a feeble scratching outside, and the pile of books moved as if thrust forward. I tried to jump up; but could not stir a limb; and so yelled aloud, in a frenzy of fright.
So, I have a theory about the meaning of the song 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes', which derives from various clues from throughout Kate's career. It is a bit controversial, though. Kate wrote the song at the tender age of just 13. Other people have interpreted the song as being about either a real or imaginary man that Kate had a relationship with. This would be a literal interpretation. My interpretation is metaphorical. I don't think that the song is about either a real or an imaginary man. I think it is about Kate's own feelings of masculinity, which had already begun to dissociate, so Kate thought of it as being a different person, the "man" that is always present when she goes to bed. This interpretation fits various other subtle clues which together suggest that Kate is some sort of trans individual, or at least not straightforwardly female. This is, however, nothing more than speculation on my part. What is clear is that Kate has always been an LGBTQ+ icon and a vocal supporter of trans issues, for example, a famous argument on the subject on social media between Kate and JK Rowling.
Stephen, I noticed you made the same lengthy comment on another channel reacting to the same song. Kate Bush, famously, says nothing without care, and has certainly never ever engaged on social media. I don't know why you are spreading obvious misinformation about two fantastic women, who I feel sure are on extremely good terms, but far from public gaze. They are both decent and respectable women, who have to endure this kind of unpleasantry from men, lies being spread about them, all the time. I don't know why you want to be one of those men, please stop it.
