Kate wrote The Man with the Child in his Eyes when she was 13. It was recorded when she was 16, as part of the demo Dave Gilmour funded to get her signed by EMI. It was good enough (clearly!) to be included on her first album and to be released as her second single without needing to be re-recorded (there was a three year gap between recording and release, so she could finish school, study mime and dance, and play gigs in pubs and such to get her used to performing.)
As an aside, the start of your intro music sounds similar to her track Hounds of Love, which is heavy on the strings and the drums.
Enjoy your Kate journey, I’ve been travelling it since 1978, and it’s a wonderful place to keep travelling back to, time and time again.

It's interesting that you commented on the foetal nature of Kate's performance, as there is actually a Kate Bush song called "Breathing" in which she literally sings as a foetus in her mother's womb, becoming aware of all the environmental damage that exists in the world, and consequently feeling afraid to be born. It's quite a powerful song, so you might want to have a look at the video for that sometime.

Oh thanks so much for doing my request and mentioning me! My name is Susana. Love this song and really showcases Kate's voice. Such an amazing songwriter. Kate did dance and drama. Everything she does has meaning. The man with the child in his eyes....think it means the man is vulnerable, shy, sensitive. That's how I interpret it but not sure.
    Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel,
    Don't give up
    Powerful duet
    Thanks so much from Australia

It is said it was written about Steve Blacknell, her first boyfriend. In fact he says he is "the man with the child in his eyes". But whoever it was written about it is my favourite song of hers, and is amazing that she wrote it at age 13. Loved your reaction, you have a new sub.

Kate started composing music at age 11 on her father's old piano. Connected to David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Roy Harper. Artists she collaborated with for some of their albums in the eighties. And them contributing to her developing into the artist she ultimately became when releasing The Dreaming in 1982. 4 years after her debutalbum The Kick Inside. And what a turningpoint that was in her career. The follow up was Hounds Of Love. Need I say more? Today's ecquivalent to Kate could be Aurora. Although, when being truly honest, Aurora is of yet another leage of her own! But one needs to dive into Kate's art with a curious streak. Look beyond the obvious. Kate has a way of telling stories that may sometimes seem superficial, but they never are. At the basis there is always a source of fascination with literature, open minded observation of nature, psychology, science and the paranormal without ever being mediocre.

Kate wrote this song when she was barely a teenager, and it was quite similar to all the other songs she wrote at an early age, in that they were quite short. It was one of the songs that Dave Gilmour promoted to record labels when he was trying to get Kate noticed, and it eventually made it onto Kate's first album.
The most generally celebrated album of Kate Bush is Hounds of Love, which spawned a string of highly-successful singles, all of which managed to be both intrinsically "Kate" and commercially accessible to a general audience, and you would do well to check out the videos for those, including Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love (the song) and Cloudbusting.

If I'm right, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" may be the most misunderstood song in history! So, what I have managed to figure out so far is that Kate's song "Running Up That Hill" is really a metaphor for gender transformation, women becoming men and men becoming women. Only after I figured that out did I learn that the male dancer in that now famous video clip (for "Running") is in fact a woman now in real life. His name is Michael Hervieu, and you can easily Google his name to find out more.
So, may I respectfully suggest that you listen again to "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", which Kate wrote at the age of 13, this time with the themes and metaphors of "Running" in mind!

I think this song was the one that Dave Gilmour took as a demo tape to EMI. Kate is playing piano on this track. It Isn’t known who “the man with the child in his eyes” was, possibly same Dave Gilmour.

Was captivating the word you were looking for? I believe it's written about a man that she used to imagine when she was a teenager. The lyrics 'the man with a child in his eyes' refer to someone who hasn't completely lost the sense of who he was as a child, or that she can see or imagine him as a child.
