Excellent video. I truly appreciate your demystifying SPS and LPS for that matter. The one thing I have discovered is some tanks can grow all types of corals while others with the same parameters seem to struggle. I just keep at it until the right magic kicks in.
I really appreciate all of the information I learn on your videos. I especially like your photography work. One request though, if in addition to the tight close ups, could you also show us what the larger colonies look like. It's great seeming the individual polyps but I'd appreciate knowing what it will look like as it gets larger. Thanks for your hard work!
Hey Than, Thanks! I called you a few months back asking about this stuff when planning a Eco Reef Zero SPS tank. I'm still working on putting the tank together & building it, so thanks for your help & this vid.
I have never kept Acros, but I do keep easy monties like orange cap with very good success in my mixed reef nano tanks. I have also been able to keep birds nest too with weekly water changes, good flow, good water parameters, etc. in my 28G and 10G tanks.
Thank you for this video it does shine a light on SPS corals which I didn't want to be bothered with because I don't have the time and I also like the motion of soft corals but I might try a couple because of what you said thank you
I didn't realize my Lepto frag was SPS, kind of explains why it really didn't like my tank to start off with, but with experimentation and placement it seems to be doing great :)
One of the big problems for sps tanks is aggressive corals that neighbor the sps species. LPS often have sweeper tentacles and softies often exude toxins. The thing is, sweepers come out at night, and toxins are invisible.
Hi, you mentioned birds nest coral can stay in a variety of conditions. I am looking for a branching or plating coral that would be happy in around 170 par and medium water flow. is there a birds nest ( or any other coral) you would recommend?
Hey Than. Big fan of your youtube channel, it's currently the best reef tank photography on youtube IMO. Do your systems have problems with montipora? In my experience, most montipora species are just as hardy as seriatopora.
renesis317 Montipora can't be kept in low light systems like some of the other options. They are also susceptible to Montipora-specific nudibranchs that are impossible to manage.
Your a damn genius i love these videos your probably the most informative interesting and highly intellectual person on you tube doing these videos....ABSOLUTELY love it..thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of these beautiful things
Montiporas are considered hard and are extremely difficult in small aquariums because of calcium and alkalinity consumption. Difficulty all depends on who you asl
I'm actually wanting a Monti garden. After acro black bugs. I'm staying clear of em. I think montis will be more interesting in unpredictable growth. Acros I love but it's pretty easy to predict growth patterns and growth patterns don't vary much. I'll admire acro in videos. Love em just not for me. It's the euphyllia for me in the sps world😅
AMAZING as usually...thank you for an awesome and informational video. I absolutely love your depth of knowledge and passion for the hobby. Keep up the great work!
Hi I am interested bout doing some corals and this type of corals are the ones that I want to start with. Can you tell me if andy of these light fixtures are good?? thank you Aldo :)Coralife Lunar Aqualight HO T5 Aquarium Light Fixture,Current USA Orbit Marine LED Saltwater Reef Lighting System
Sleeper goby is a great choice...very cool fish. Well keep at it, maybe eventually your parents will give in and get you a fish tank...that's how I got my first one lol
Meanwhile, I can keep multiple types of acros (green planet, hard bonsai, another whose name eludes me) which are thriving and I have had seriatapora, stylophora and poccilopora bleach on me. It just goes to show how finicky these corals can be even when they are labeled as the easy kind
Excellent, informative video, thanks! in future videos you should talk a little farther away from your microphone. Audio quality is a little too good.. I can hear subtle saliva noises.
Your video is misleading. You focus on the flow and light requirements which are easy to achieve throwing money at it. You didn't mention the key requirement for SPS that opens the gates of hell in saltwater tanks: the need to supply calcium. So, my advise for anyone who wants to enjoy their reef tank with less fuss and risk is to stay away from SPS and LPS.

8 years since this video... The hobby has come a long way since then. I'd LOVE to see a reboot of this topic!

Best reefing site by a wide margin! Never disappoints.
Awesome video! Definitely cleared up some of the doubts I was having about SPS.

U always have the most informative videos out there!!👍
Thank u for giving us hope and new way
Great video! Any update videos planned for Paul's tank?😃😃😃
Robert LaFlure it may or may not even exist anymore :/ some of the aquariums we've shown here on this channel only live on digitally...
Awesome write-up!
Great video Than, thank you!
Thanks! Im still having troubles, with some sps, lol. Im getting the growth, but color is gone.

I had success with all the corals besides the porites for my default biocube light
You have the best videos!!! Very inspiring

Welcome!
I want to get into sps because I think they look more beautiful than lps. I still love my hammer though lol great info!
I thought montiporas were considered to be pretty easy? Acropora's definitely harder, even though I have never tried one.
Montiporas are considered hard and are extremely difficult in small aquariums because of calcium and alkalinity consumption. Difficulty all depends on who you asl
@@brandonezdoofenshmirtz2916 Im an abosolute noob in SPS, I find Montipora is easier. Its purely just about stability of the 3 elements
I grow montiporas like crazy, can’t get an acropora to last 3 months.

So building a tank with these recommendations.
Awesome video as always 👏🏻

Very helpful thank you👍👍
what is the coral at 2:20? im in love
how much flow do u use my color on my sps is great...but the sps isnt poliping....can you help me
great information great video
im running rw 8 what flow should it be for the corals?
red cap montis are actually easy sps, a great alternative for a plating montiopora actually isnt a coral, it is a photosynthetic plating sponge.
Great video!!
What’s the music you’re playing

Just love your videos...incredible
Hi there
So did you get a reef aquarium? As awesome as all your vids are ( I subbed to you btw) I've never seen a marine aquarium on your channel
Thanks Abdul...I actually only have freshwater these days. I used to keep salt though :)
What a bummer. To bad my parents won't even get me an aquarium but if they did I'm planning on a sleeper goby breeding project
Sleeper goby is a great choice...very cool fish. Well keep at it, maybe eventually your parents will give in and get you a fish tank...that's how I got my first one lol
muito bom.vc explica muito bem
what level phos should my jbj45 be i have sps and lps...?
1.0 or less .03 max
Very important question, will you be at reefapalooza nyc
Mesa's Tank No I will not.
Tidal Gardens Inc. :(
how to get my sps to polip using red sea feeding benepets
ocean revive light blue 100 white 1 12 inches off water
Good info :)
Thanks for the info Than

Sean Wellman It could be too much light. The conditions that Acros like are often too bright for some other SPS.
The corals are kept at different depths according to the list lighting preference
I've had similar issues with poccilopora but my montie's took over my live rock just as bad as GSP lol
Looks like the porities has a friend at 5:36 = Nudi
7:50 - this green one is so beautiful. What is this kind?
Artem Klimov did you find out
@@Sedona_FD3S no :)

Joey Chen it won't be enough
LightSearch you kidding? i dont dose at all and ive still got beautifull acroporas and seriatoporas. there is no fuss. just regular water changes.
Stay away from LPS? lol......I have no words....
stay away from SALT !!! lol it has calcium in it bro science My adviseeee is stay away from H20
