You hit some key points my friend. Setting your lights & dialing them into where you want them as well as having stability are probably two of the most important aspects. Your tank is looking very nice and your SPS are thriving really well.

That's part of why I'm getting an Apex - it can shut the doser off if the levels get past a set point (or, I believe, turn it on if it gets below a set point.)
Biggest thing that I have learned is when you buy a acro’s and you put in your tank don’t expect it to do anything for upwards of six months. And don’t freak out during that time changing a bunch of things to get it to start growing. Acros are a little pain in the ass divas they will grow when they want to grow and once they start growing after sitting dormant they will explode and you will have to trim it monthly to keep it from getting too big. That has been my experience anyway.
So cool to see a video!! I have watched you for years. Sadly I still haven’t set up a reef tank but new year so maybe this will be the year! I really want to soon and need to get back into my fish tanks hardcore! Maybe start TH-cam back again too 😅
@@InappropriateReefer it might just be! Will have to start over watching your videos again to see what size I want to do. And I’ll try and get back into TH-cam as well now! Thank you!

People that have to tinker with tank every day will always have problems. I have my CR dialed in, and the tank is on cruise control. Your tank is looking great keep it up.
I have not tried diffuser over the G5s since I did not notice any disco-ball problem like I did with the G3s (may be due to mounting height and water surface agitation). I'll take a closer look in the AM to see if I notice any of the color breaking up or acting funny... if I do, I hate you.
Very interested in your CO2 scrubber setup. I noticed that when I activated the recirculating scrubber on the skimmer, the Alk spikes immediately. Makes sense when the pH increases suddenly. How to deal with this alk increase? Use a valve and Tsplitter on the air intake and gradually increase recirculation?
I actually haven't run into this Alk increase, Alk consumption slowly ramps up for me over a few days, but I have not noticed a spike in Alk from the recirculating scrubber.. 🤔 If I were to encounter this and want to only scrub part of the day, I would use my controller to run solenoid to control whether the skimmer pulls in the recirculating air, or fresh air. Alternatively I may put a T with an air pump pushing fresh air into the line, and use a timer to control when the air pump turns on. These are just ideas though that I have seen/heard people do, I have not actually tried these yet.
@@InappropriateReefer Thanks for the great ideas, I have an extra air pump lying around, will install it on a T splitter and a timer. I would really like to raise my pH from 8.0 where it sits most of the time, especially in winter.

I took a 2x4 and cut it a little short of the width of one of the windows in my office/mancave. I drilled a hole matching the same size of hose I connected to my skimmer. I also wrapped the 2x4 in insulation foam. The foam seals the 2x4 where it makes contact with the window and window frame. So the 2x4 is sealed against the weather and I am able to draw fresh air from outside the house to my skimmer. Now I cannot lock my window, but my security system of 2 german shepherds, a weimaraner and coon hound mix, and living out in the sticks of Texas greatly reduce the risk of break-ins.
LOL at the last part. I thought about doing something like this, or just jam a hose out under a slightly opened window; but not able to close & lock the window completely worries me a little, decided to not mess with it at all. I may be singing a different tune if I had the same security personnels that you do...

A little late to the party here haha. However, I would like to emphasize on trace elements. Went through a few interesting battles where I saw browning on montis and sps frags. To compensate for lack of water changes I tried a few different trace elements by red sea and saw some tremendous results. My issue was testing each extra element on its own. For example, potassium which I'm under the impression was my leading variable. Helped bring color back in purple and green pigmentation specifically but can also cause browning if over used. There's has to be a sweet spot some where lol
I have been battling Alkalinity in my 15 gallon it’s extremely difficult to keep it stable it always creeps up on me and my tank is jam packed with coral. My salt mixes at 8 and I literally do 20 percent water change every weeks. I don’t get it!!!
Honestly get a bigger tank, I went from the 13.5 evo to a 25 gallon lagoon and it made such a difference. Having such low volume but heavy stock, it is impossible without a trident to keep things stable. I did the same thing too, 20% water change but if you go above a certain threshold of bio-load, that can only help so much. I only wished they made nano skimmers better.
When you say your Alk creeps up on you, are you saying that your Alk is actually increasing from the 8dKH that your tank should sits at, due to the salt mix & weekly water change?
@@InappropriateReefer come to B.C. Canada and we can go visit Devin reefdudes together. I’ll hook you up with one, just gotta sneak it back across the border lol
SPS frags will almost always go through and adjustment period. That's pretty normal. Once in a blue moon you might end up dropping a frag into a system that is so similar it takes off right away but that's super rare.
I’m also not a fan of recirculating. For my logic, there is no way you can keep O2 levels high if recirculating, as O2 will be taken up into the water column, and no replenished. I get easy and stable 8.4-8.5 pH drawing external air through a CO2 scrubber. Cheap, manageable, and extremely effective. You do need a high air volume skimmer though.
Not for nothing we should be much more advanced on dosing these days. We should have cheaper auto testers that dose according to the test results to make corrections and keep stability
