One could technically put any coral on the bottom of a reef tank and make it work to some degree. It’s not always a good idea to do so and here we will cover why some corals make better bare bottom candidates than others.

great content thanks for sharing! i usually put the leptos and cyphstreas in less than ideally lit rock crevasses but never thought of the lepto floor, i might have to try this!
Doesn't take too long either. Leptoseris is fast growing on the glass.
I love leptoseris and cyphastrea - have several of each in my tanks. I think encrusting corals overall are underrated and I believe it’s because people automatically think, “How can I Frag that?” But they are fabulous when grown out over large areas such as bare tank bottoms. 👍🏻 I do have a reservation about GSP though - when it reaches rocks it will start to climb and then it’ll take over. That’s one of the reasons I no longer keep it, though I find it quite beautiful. Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻

I think the Setosa coral works very well on the bottom, both branching and encrusting, copes with decent flow and also grows fast and has great colour in low light.

Monti's could be an honorable-mention for shallower or higher-light setups.
Yes! Lots of light though.
I would give chalices an honorable mention. After the rock is in place theirs is definitely places you can put a happy chalice. The issue is it can become a bit of a mine field. Anything that falls down onto them is toast.

I would rather have a tank without rocks and corals than without sand. I think it's my favorite part of a tank.
I love the look of sand but it becomes unpleasant when it starts to change colors underneath and a headache when it becomes unevenly distributed around the tank and blows around a bit. I prefer bare bottom. Dealing with the algae on the bottom is a con but I am considering having some coral grow on the bottom of it as discussed in the video.

I'd like to add pink star polyp in addition to GSP. PSP doesnt fluoresce like GSP but they make a nice contrast to one another

:) "the intensity is divided by the square of the distance" is true only for point like light sources. Reef lights are very much not 'point like' sources - especially LEDs
This is amazing... I am thinking of going half and half and want to put some encrusting on the bottom. I think Lepto is the purrrfect number 1.
I thought for sure you would have some moon corals (I love them) and I think they can handle some pretty strong flow right?
I also want to put deepwater montis like crazy-t (granted they are not beginner friendly) plus there are deeper water acros like Purple Dragon (Carduus?) that could replace the birdsnest
Anyhow my top 5 would include the monti (I would get rid of the GSP which I'd only place on a rock in the sand - or (which would be a brilliant idea) on a space surrounded by sand (now I am considering doing that - I'd also replace Cyphastrea and put it on the back glass (maybe under a magnet rock shelf). I would replace it with maybe a stylocoenellia (again that's pretty advanced and they don't get big.
Some tanks are super bright and can keep really nice Montipora at the bottom.
What about Trachys on the bottom? Some of the flesh seems to squish on the bottom. Long term implications? This is one reason im looking at adding my sand substrate again.

Glued some GSP to a turbo snail over a year ago and it's still there and has grown some. The snail has even scraped right up against an exposed power head and the coral is still there. Wtf.

I cant agree with GSP on this list. As someone who first put it in my tank as a beginner 5 years later I had to redue my tank because it is so invasive and covered everything.
I have the 24k lepro will it grow good on the back glass also

My GSP bottom of the tank one year a go but not spread at all but look very healthy

What about plate corals?
No green star polyps is a very bad choose they accumulate a lot of dirt also they will growth over stones and need to be trimmed regularly
