1yr later hope you did it bro. I’ve been 3 years fish only, finally upgraded to 2 ai primes, Hannah test kits & AIO tank. I’m ready to see what corals have for me
Love your videos Than! Thanks for the detailed info. As a science junkie, I especially love that you provide actual taxonomies as often as possible. I wish that were more wide spread in the industry.
Than, you mention Xenia on an island, but I’ve kept varieties that can “release” tops off the Xenia and blow around the tank settling in area I didn’t want. Just a watch out as that sure surprised me when I tried an island of them!
I agree with all the points you brought out, I used to have a Reef Aquarium so I understand exactly what you are talking about. I had most of those Corals, they are my favorite. One day, I will have another one, but First, I need to buy a house so I can have the space for another one. Thank you very much for sharing. Have a great weekend.
7:55 Than... you need to meet my elegance. It's tentacles (not the whole polyp) extend about 10" upwards 😂 Crazier than anything torch euphyllia can come up with! Great video with great corals! Thanks for thinking of the walking dendro - it doesn't nearly receive the attention it deserves!
"Never be cool".... Haha. Please, forgive me if this question is too old to answer, but what camera are you using ! Punchy-sharp and accurate colors. Outstanding presentation. Thank you.
excelente info aun que tuve que traducirlo por eso me encanta este canal excepcional información y contenido y util lo unico malo es que you tube no tiene estos videos ni con sub titulos al español aun asi excepcional gracias Tidal G,
Ahhhh so my fungia is actually supposed to move - I am always trying to put shells and stuff around it to hem it in. I was told at the store (Fauna Marin) to put a shell or rubble under it to help keep pests away from its base that it can suffer from in the sand. I also thought a scoly prefers low flow and light so I keep my button in a cave - the color has definitely got better. Thanks Than ;)
Would the trachy be considered a meaty coral I always see them in the substrate and Wichita substrate would be best I’m deeply considering make this my next coral
I'm up in the air on this. I've kept them on glass before and I've had them suddenly die overnight. I don't know if it is substrate (or lack thereof) related but it makes me wonder.
why would my lobo be bleaching on the sand where the light is low? I also cant believe it didint make the list! I have a lobo and just ordered a wellsi to keep on sand bed. They get very big for rockwork and also have a flat botton and are beautiful! and colorful! I also thought I heard you say b4 that plates were hard to keep! I have lost about 5 of them! Most recently a gorgeous tye dye looking body with long tentacles with blue tips! I scored it for 50 bucks and I know it was worth at least 400! It was about 5 inches in diameter as well!
What is the coral at 0:24? I had a mystery frags gifted to me and i have one and have no idea. Im thinking its a gonipora but it never extends like it? Had it 2 days now
I love your TH-cam channel and website! So beautiful, professional. Can you please make video about top 10 fastest growing corals? I can not find anything on fastest growing here at TH-cam. Also top 10 small size corals for 5 g nano reefs and pico tanks? Would be so great to learn from your experience.
Need more of these videos. The live shows are irrelevant to us international viewers (specifically W.A. AUS as we can't import anything) How's the build going? Any plans on an update soon?
I saw my Frosted Forest Aussie Lord eat a spaghetti worm once. Also saw that same coral eat a mushroom coral that had come off its frag plug. And watched another Aussie Lord eat a bristle worm. Yeah. My Aussie Lords don't mess around when it comes to eating.
I'm very new to this so bare with me. So I have a rainbow plate coral and I put it on the substrate when I got it. Everything looked OK and not knowing and better I moved it to a pretty thin and very flat live rock that I just got. I'd say it's about 1/2" thick so it's not to high off the floor. Well since I've done that, maybe 2 days. It has really started looking amazing. It's so much more open and "flowly" than before. It even looks a little bigger. Any idea why? My tank is only 25 gal and I have an AI light. LMK, if you need anymore info to figure this out or whatever. Thanks Edit: now that I think of it it's probably because it's more like the rocky substrate you described in the video. idk
@rajgill7576 The plate coral died, but everything else is doing great. I just keep my levels steady. I did have a dino breakout, but I was able to put it down.
I would say similar to xenia, green star polyps are good invasive coral to have on an island on the sandbed. The only issues being they love high flow which can disturb sand, and spaghetti worms bother them 😒
I used to put favias on the sand, but lately for some reason, they've been changing weird colors down there. It's probably because my bulb's spectrum is moving around. Now I really want a walking dendro, too, haha.
Ive had a walking coral for a little over a year... One time a rogue emerald crab ended up stripping all of the flesh off of the base... Normally I would throw the coral away as it was completely bare and it had turned a chalky white...However because of the peanut worm I decided to leave it be... Somehow within 3 months the tissue had all grown back and it now looks better than ever 8 months later
@@tidalgardens is it possible for a walking coral to develope more than one mouth....because after another incident it seems like instead of a single line of tentacles there are two main clumps on each end
About the xenia being on its island. From my experienced, they dont stay within that "island" it as if they exploded in the tank. And youd see alot of small polyps.
My elegance was doing great.. but as you mentioned, it was in the sandbed and suddenly the flesh started to come off from the skeleton. Now watching this video I noticed that the skeleton is black, so this is due to anaerobic conditions?
@@tidalgardens thank you for the answer. Yeah.. it's sad.. was a very beautiful piece. Well it is still alive and opening a little.. but it is the same for weeks now. I don't think it will heal again? Or? I placed it on flat rock a month ago.
Great video. Would Trachophilia fall into meat corals? They can balloon up to make sand fall off, which would make them specifically a good choice I wld think.
@@Hex22 ok, thanks, but are there any other corals that you should not dip? there are videos only about how to dip corals, but not a single video about what corals you should NEVER dip. Thanks!
Suv Porridge I didn't dip mine - But about the worst hitchhiker on a dendro would be red planaria or some form of LPS-Flatworm (they aren't too bad and any wrasse would likely eat them) As for other corals not to dip: I wouldn't dip any Acropora echinata, carduus, suharsonoi etc what are often referred to as "deep sea acros". I lost every echinata i dipped. (coral rx) *disclaimer* I don't generally advocate "not dipping corals" but those species i think can't handle a dip. Manually remove any pests and QT them just to be sure no pests are on them :)
Suv Porridge It’s not really about the coral regarding the walking dendro but the worm, because that’s exactly the type of thing dips are designed to kill, other than that I’d dip every coral and just dilute more for really sensitive ones
You brought up xenia as an honorable mention, i almost cried cuz i ordered one the other day and its almost dead :(( my nitrates are too low (0) Sometimes having perfect water is badd. Now im feeding like 3 times a day just to raise nitrates quickly

@@tidalgardens on fine substrate? Idk why but my carpet anemone doesnt feel like staying on the substrate (fine sand, he moved from the rocks to the sand) and eventually died, my LTA on the other hand, is living and chilling on a rock till this day
Mostly I think this is spot-on. I wouldn't use a coral's ability to shake off sand as a criterion. Most of us do daily tank maintenence, so you can just blow the sand off. Elegance corals feed better if you mush them up against the glass? What?!?
I feel like with enough water changes, you could get a Palau Jellyfish Lake thing going because of the intense clay soil base. Yes!!! Totally right!!
How do you think elegance and plates would do on a bare bottom tank? Would you do a list on corals for the bottom of a bare bottom tank?
