Hey all - just got an email from the developer about the 'whispered hints' issue. Here's what he had to say: Quick update: I've just added an update to the game, allowing bold players to disable hints, forcing them to figure out all the game's puzzles on their own. The update, along with instructions, is here: store.steampowered.com/news/app/874260/view/2983057384598164970
the hint thing was the one thing giving me reservations about the game. I love mystery games like this, stuff like Obra Diin and Outer Wilds and so on, and I feel like those games would be ruined on a lot of levels if they just straight up gave you hints regularly instead of letting me stumble around like an idiot until I came to the realization myself. That realization feeling is so powerful in a game like this so I'm glad to see it's now a toggle.
The problem is that we have a conflict between narrative and mechanics. A huge point is that the owner of the voice is guiding everything you do there, so the voices should be there from a narrative perspective (even questioning yourself sometimes if what you are is just a puppet following orders because of her own goals) but that conflicts mechanically with the puzzles. I am glad they added the option to disable them, but they are on by default and for that reason.
@@Ilwenray85 I just finished this game the other day and just to be clear - you cannot entirely disable the whispers. The toggle only specifically disables the whispers that give puzzle hints. The ones that say things like “he listens with their ears” etc are still in place. I played without the hints on and didn’t feel like it harmed the narrative at all.
@@ryhanon7 I was talking about the whispers' existence in general, and how it affected puzzles in particular. And it does indeed create a dissonance. Because those whispers are everywhere, and then you get a pause when that voice should be more urgent in tells us what to do. I played the first run (true ending) without hints, and the rest with them. And while I recommend disabling the hints the first time, I could perceive a clear difference. The hints are urgent, she doesn't want to wait for you to solve the puzzles, she wants you to finish them ASAP. She didn't choose you because you were special and trusted you, and that was clear. You can't fully disable the whispers and when you do it partially, it is a bit jarring. English is not my first language, so sorry if I wasn't able to explain myself correctly.
I gotta try this indie game you're talking about, Skyrim was the name, right? 2011 means it would've released on the PS3, though. Do you know if they've ported it over to any other systems?
I think you can just ask Todd. He’s the head honcho of the indie studio. Was very willing to help guys out if the game wasn’t available on their platform of choice.
I'm pretty sure you can play it on your old school calculator.. the game itself will be pretty hard to find, though. Wish they could've promoted it more
True. But it's hard to get a copy. It's basically unavailable on any system people use to play games. But the Texas Instruments Calculator version is really good.
@@GottkaiserFhqwhgod Well it's the cassette version right? Apparently, it's a glitch that happens with non-Sony cassette players, the only fix is to buy a new one.
You should consider categorizing this type of review as a Spotlight. Shine a light on the game because it’s worthy, but reservations that prevent it from a full recommend
Speaking of shining lights, has no one else noticed the character is using a flashlight... in the age of the Roman Empire? I don't know if there's a reason for this but it seems a bit odd

I remember playing the forgotten city years ago. Probably the best mod I’ve ever downloaded for any game I’ve ever played. Absolutely awesome questline
I recently finished playing this game and loved it. I had no knowledge or expectations going in so that may have helped. The criticisms the video makes are fair, but overall didn't detract from the experience for me, as on balance the strengths fair outweighed the weaknesses. Like the reviewer, I absolutely adored Outer Wilds and share his opinion that it is one of the greatest games ever made. The biggest praise I can give TLC is that it gave me the same kind of feeling playing it as Outer Wilds - not exactly the same, and this game is much shorter and smaller - but enough that it satisfied that itch. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes dialogue-based puzzle adventures or time loops.
This game was such an incredible experience. I love history and seeing the absolutely beautiful environment of my favorite time period made me instantly fall in love. The story was rewarding and had a nice payoff. The canon ending was cheesy but I didn’t really care that much. The way they tied in the pantheons of the romans and the previous three generations was really cool imo. I think in general there’s a massive niche for historical non-strategy games that needs to be exploited by a savvy developer. Why invent some random mythical world when the ones in history are just as incredible
Great review, only criticism is that you showed footage of the many applications of the bow. For example turning the vines into gold so that they can be used as a ladder, might have enjoyed figuring that out myself.
Skyrim's "shite" engine is the whole reason Enderal actually works. Radiant AI is used a lot in that game and it'll be very hard for a couple of devs to do that from scratch. That is part of the reason why Forgotten city works better as a mod for Skyrim than a standalone game.
@@raypalmer5125 That goes without saying My point is SureAI is now doing their own thing, and I'd love to see them move Enderal over to a modern engine with fresh assets. (FYI I have no idea what they're doing next, but it's not related to the Creation Engine).

Since you just did this, would you please take a look at Enderal? It recently got Special Edition, it is also a Skyrim overhaul, made by a small team and it is very, very, very good. In my opinion Enderal is absolutely astonishing work that has been flowing a bit under the radar and deserve to be known. Thanks even for reading Ralph.

Goods and bads kinda blindside you, but...that's great! It illicits more organic responses from viewers. Also, greatly miss the preamble Story Time. Hoping for more in the future maybe.
I can see a toggle for the puzzle hints being added soon after official release, making that an easy issue to fix. The unfortunate use of the time loop mechanic, though, is a different story. It either requires a big patch farther down the road, or has to be executed in a different game. As for facial animations, I don't really know how feasible that is by a small studio. I'm banking on that puzzle hint toggle, though. I'll keep an eye on the game to see if that gets added.
Firstly, god I love the way you describe your gaming experience in the reviews. I get a really good picture of what it offers. Second, this smacks of Minority Report meets Groundhog Day. Once I got that I moved into the purchase mindset.
@@big.atom37 That often happens either someone leaks a review copy or scammers upload infested crap posing as the unobtainable. Happens with movies quite a bit too
If you love time loops, I wholeheartedly recommend the novel "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle". Each loop takes a layer off the deep onion to get to the core. Best not to google it, land on this book dry of background - it will be a far better experience. The audible book is fantastically read.
This was one of my favorite Skyrim mods, it was really unique. I think I'll have to buy this one, just to support what they did with the free Skyrim mod if nothing else
As an American, the biggest thing I learned in this review was the phrase 'suck it and see.' Here's the top UD entry for my fellow Americans: Charming British expression referring to trying out something untested or kind of unknown. It's really a metaphor - the new thing is like a boiled sweet, the unknown consequences are the flavor, so you "suck it and see"! I had never heard this before.
Thanks for doing a review on this skillup. I would have never known about this game and dev team if it weren't for this review. This game definitely piques some interest and definitely at what this small team could accomplish in the future
We loved this game. We actually didn’t encounter any explicit tips from the whispering in our first play through. I think that might happen after a certain number of loops.
Like you I also shout out a big FU to game designers that ask if I want to lower the difficulty after dying. Dude you made things so there's a key to living and I haven't figured it out yet. As long as you didn't make it 20 time dying learning curve (one part of plague's tail innocence), or a useful TH-cam "how to" solution available.
You can turn off the hints now. I actually recently played it and it was one of my favorite games I played last year. I left the hints on and really I didn't mind them, it makes sense narratively that the voice is trying to help you because [spoilers], so its justified within the narrative. I wasn't thinking of it as a puzzle game though, I was viewing it as a narrative game more purely. I think if you don't look at it as a puzzle game, it works fine.
Can't wait for you to review Deathloop and see how they execute the timeloop and immersive sim elements. One of my most anticipated games of this year for sure
I actually played the mod for skyrim and the standalone game now that it came out and I really love it , although I knew some of the twists and plot points because I played the mod ( like the fate of a certain girl that disappeared ) so maybe it had less of an effect on me than what it could've , but they did change / improve a ton of other things and the narrative is great , also getting that last ending was satisfying as fuck . All in all , really enjoyabe game with a great narrative that I would recommend playing at some point
Thank you! I can't wait to play it this weekend, warts and all! I love focused worlds, getting to know the environment and remember it for the rest of my life at random times. I love that!
Just bought it based on your review. I dunno, I think it will scratch a very particular itch. As a long-time DM and writer myself, it's VERY rare to see a mystery pull of its premise and conclusion with a succinct satisfcation. I'm looking forward to it.
Skillup never fails to deliver genuinely helpful reviews. Not just rants on if it's good or not. I'm looking forward to playing this. Hopefully it'll help scratch that Skyrim itch I have.
Anyone remember shadow's of memories (shadow of destiny in the US)? I loved it as a kid, the time travel mechanics were so cool having to solve your own murder and getting to make different choices everytime you die. Would absolutely love to see a remaster/remake but it's a Konami game so it's looking unlikely.
You should play Pathologic 2. It's not a time loop really but the complex ways i which the characters talk and narrow (and sometimes punishing) decision making windows should make it right up yo ally. It's also quite philosophical, The game also needs more exposure imo. P.S. The game is fucking hard.
You ever played “the invisible hour”? It’s not really time travel in it’s classical meaning but a theater piece in a mansion that you can play, pause and rewind while moving through the house to figure out a murder mystery.

Im bored- read your comment- so what happened?
While as you say the gameplay couldve been more ,
Im glad to hear that the writing and storyline are worthy
Firstly, god I love the way you describe your gaming experience in the reviews. I get a really good picture of what it offers.
Second, this smacks of Minority Report meets Groundhog Day. Once I got that I moved into the purchase mindset.
I can’t wait to hear what you think about Deathloop. It’s coming from a great team 👌
Deathloop was garbage lol
Great team can't have bad intentions
I just can't get over the fact that many NPCs in this game seem to be cross-eyed.
Been here since the division reviews.. why doesn’t this channel have over a million subs?
Seems the puzzle whispers are set to Game journalist mode.
I thought you were going to post your review for “The Ascent”!? 😔
@Razo July 29th according to Steam. I'd expect the review embargo will also lift tomorrow.
It's funny that a yet to be released game was uploaded to torrent websites like a week ago.
@@big.atom37 then its probably not something you'd want on your computer.
@@big.atom37 That often happens either someone leaks a review copy or scammers upload infested crap posing as the unobtainable. Happens with movies quite a bit too
Is that out
If you love time loops, I wholeheartedly recommend the novel "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle". Each loop takes a layer off the deep onion to get to the core. Best not to google it, land on this book dry of background - it will be a far better experience. The audible book is fantastically read.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Will check it out on audible. Cheers.
This was one of my favorite Skyrim mods, it was really unique. I think I'll have to buy this one, just to support what they did with the free Skyrim mod if nothing else
This game is on Game Pass now!
As an American, the biggest thing I learned in this review was the phrase 'suck it and see.' Here's the top UD entry for my fellow Americans:
Charming British expression referring to trying out something untested or kind of unknown. It's really a metaphor - the new thing is like a boiled sweet, the unknown consequences are the flavor, so you "suck it and see"!
I had never heard this before.
Great review, loved the mod so I'll probably give this a go sometime
Australian made!! Happy for the creator..!
Thanks, ShillUp.
Thanks for doing a review on this skillup. I would have never known about this game and dev team if it weren't for this review. This game definitely piques some interest and definitely at what this small team could accomplish in the future
"As worlds become larger and larger the process of actually exploring them is all but removed"
Shit, too real. Im tired of empty openness
I am so hyped for your Outer Wilds video
I absolutely love this game. Played 7 hours in one sitting and got 3 endings. Now i'm gonna play it for the final ending.
We loved this game. We actually didn’t encounter any explicit tips from the whispering in our first play through. I think that might happen after a certain number of loops.
It’s on GamePass now, which is how I just played it.
I love your reviews, your soothing voice puts my toddler to sleep 🤣
Like you I also shout out a big FU to game designers that ask if I want to lower the difficulty after dying. Dude you made things so there's a key to living and I haven't figured it out yet. As long as you didn't make it 20 time dying learning curve (one part of plague's tail innocence), or a useful TH-cam "how to" solution available.
I’m really glad you reviewed this cause I didn’t even know it existed! I think I’m gonna check it out on the PlayStation 👍
"Huntorr is now playing Destiny 2."
Another great review!
Good news! This is available on Game Pass!
Great video, very informative. Thanks.
I played this and it was amazing. Such a great narrative 10/10
Thank you! I can't wait to play it this weekend, warts and all! I love focused worlds, getting to know the environment and remember it for the rest of my life at random times. I love that!
Is now on game pass, the gods indeed listen to our prayers.
Just bought it based on your review. I dunno, I think it will scratch a very particular itch. As a long-time DM and writer myself, it's VERY rare to see a mystery pull of its premise and conclusion with a succinct satisfcation. I'm looking forward to it.
Dialogue sequences look just like Outer Worlds
Skillup never fails to deliver genuinely helpful reviews. Not just rants on if it's good or not. I'm looking forward to playing this. Hopefully it'll help scratch that Skyrim itch I have.
Finally someone else who's played Skyrim! I really hope this video brought it the popularity it deserves
This is my favorite game of 2021 so far.
TY for this video!
You should play Pathologic 2. It's not a time loop really but the complex ways i which the characters talk and narrow (and sometimes punishing) decision making windows should make it right up yo ally. It's also quite philosophical, The game also needs more exposure imo.
P.S. The game is fucking hard.
yes indeed
Cool, none of the problems you mentioned are really dealbreakers for me. I’m looking forward to playing this!
Nice review, Watched it fully.
Incredible
It’s been 5 Mins bro lol
I appreciate such balanced and unbiased honesty here
You ever played “the invisible hour”? It’s not really time travel in it’s classical meaning but a theater piece in a mansion that you can play, pause and rewind while moving through the house to figure out a murder mystery.
Just downloaded this since it came to the switch, so far so good!!
Titanfall II has a great time travel stuff.
For one like ten minute level. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but it's not enough to satiate my time travel appetite :P
@@coldblowcode agreed it's time travel is too short.
ESL
I don't think one gimmick level in an FPS, compares to a game based on time travel 🤔
