I hope games like The Forgotten City, Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn end up becoming a whole genre with many titles. I really like these types of mystery-solving games.
For me they're "puzzle adventure" games and the genre already exist since at least Myst (and revive since at least The Witness) but I know some papers who says like you that there are all new "Brainvania".
@@garkham i can see what you mean, but i feel with especially the forgotten city and outer wilds theyre such a narrative take on it that i struggle seeing it as *puzzle* adventure in that same sense. obra dinn is more in that more classic puzzle type of puzzle adventure, but yea, its weird to think about
GREAT game. I liked the way it handled the rogue type elements without having to repeat the same actions/discussions over and over again. Very engaging story. Well worth playing until you unlock the best ending.
Although this game is on game pass, I actually bought it when it was on sale and I don't regret it at all. Such an underrated and complete surprise of a title. This and guardians basically had my two favorite stories of any video game of 2021
It was certainly sobering learning Nick’s story, and just how dire it was to piece this game together with a team of like 3 people over 4+ years (not including the mod he made). Great game.
Fantastic game, and fantastic expose. I dig your reporting style, Kurt. It's obvious you put a lot of time and research into your pieces, so whenever I see one of these videos pop up in my feed I know I'm not wasting my time. Keep up the great work!
I'm commenting a year after this video came out and I have to say that this game is great. I started and finished it in one day because very few times I have seen a game made with such effort, by a really small team, and with this palpable care. Thank you!
Wow, perseverance, passion, jumping off a cliff and building wings on the way down--I love the story behind the game. I've never played a time-loop game before and was a little lost even after I got to my first ending (3). I went through again and got to ending 4 this time. I love the game. It was engrossing. The characters and their world are now enriching my everyday world.
As a longtime Roman and Greek history buff, they did a marvelous job of recreating a Roman city and Roman culture, its just wonderful as a recreation of the Roman era. I played the mod years ago, Im a Skyrim Modder, and also this game, I liked the new game, it wasnt broken for me.
Great expose! Appreciate the highlighting of the domino effect that is (unfortunately) common in game development. The moustache and toga combo is A+ as well.
Thank you so much, bc! Hearing devs stories on how quickly something can just crumble apart is vastly sobering. I think it was the Weird West dev that told me making games can be like having to reinvent the wheel every single time. And that sticks with me.
Same! If anyone in the comments is down here reading this, you HAVE to play both of these (give yourself a breather between the versions, though). I was always going to play both if only to support the creator, but the domino effect changes of removing the TES setting made the standalone The Forgotten City a delightful surprise for me; same excellent writing that carried the mod, but everything was a new experience that felt more like a spiritual sequel!
I would say that outerwilds is a more extreme version of this. I actually completed Outerwilds first and stubbled upon this game by chance. I drew comparisons right away. The Forgotten City can be completed in around 10 game hours without any guides. Whereas outerwilds took me several weeks to pick apart. And I needed a little bit of outside help. If you like this game and want an extreme challenge version of it, but with more gameplay mechanics. Outerwilds is a perfect experience. You do trade out voice acting for text. And you need to do a lot of you’re own “figuring things out”. But that’s what makes it a great challenge. There’s almost no hand holding and that makes for an very rewarding exploration of the world.
The original. The Skyrim mod was far and away better. Especially the voice acting which is very telling. Paid work will never be at the same level as work done purely for the passion.
Except that you lose all of the philosophy and history and elements annoys cultures building on top of one another, which is the most interesting thing about this game
Gamestop trying out PMG style games docu-pieces huh? I like the format. Though PMG is special because of how dedicated those guys are to the craft of journalism.
Whoever's reading this, i pray that whatever you're going through gets better and whatever you're struggling with or worrying about is going to be fine and that everyone has a fantastic day! Amen
when they decided to change the setting to rome they had to redo all the pillars, aesthetics, clothes, light source, voice actors and backstories. fixed your overlong video for you

Have you ever played 12 minutes? It's also a game where you re-live the same 12 minutes everyday until you solve the mystery. It has 6 endings.
@@cerpin_text Their entire games are based on solving puzzles
@@cerpin_text Soooo uhhh will forgotten city scratch my outer wilds itch?
Is it worthy?
A city built upon a city built upon a city. Thats exactly in the theme of the game!

This game was amazing i loved the gameplay and the story when you find out about sentilla it blew my wig back
Terrific game, can't Imagine how hard it was to make all the actions work.

Always and immensely appreciate your time watching these videos and commenting. Thank you for the support, PLAYER1
Such a good game. I’m glad it came together. I really appreciated all the work. And the ending really got me. Can’t wait to see what he does next.
One of my favourite experiences EVER.

Love the domino metaphor re: both doing it over and over as well as how elements are linked together and one change can have a… domino effect. Nice!
Fantastic presentation from Gamespot, what a wonderful idea for a video!
This game was so incredibly well made! Very impressed. The attention to detail is amazing and made the game such a pleasure to play
I had heard this game was a mod first, but I had no idea the differences ran so deep! The historical setting added so much to the experience

One of the best games I’ve played
Awesome game, finished it today with the best ending without any help, bossmode 😎👌
Downloaded this game last week, haven’t slept since.
Loved this game! And this video is an awesome look at the development of it!
Glad you liked it, and thank you for watching! I’m a big fan of The Forgotten City so it was certainly an honor to tell this side of Nick’s story
Great expose! Appreciate the highlighting of the domino effect that is (unfortunately) common in game development.

Played this game on game pass. Such a well written and well presented time-loop story
Same and agreed. Loved it
I've played both the Skyrim mod and the actual game, I absolutely love them both.

4:50 hehehe thank you
You’re welcome
Thanks to game pass that introduced this amazing game i even started to search for similar games and found outer wilds

My game of the year for 2021.
*Forgotten City, CONTROL, Life Is Strange and Outer Wilds are the most creative games I've played in the last 10 years* 👍
You should check out Pentiment
It worked perfectly in the end though
For me it was 2021s Game of the Year.
Excited for a sequel.
Salve friends. I just wanted to say that I enjoyed this video a lot.
I absolutely loved this game.

I absolutely loved the story of this game
Was an amazing game.
But if a God can be the reason for the timely? Why couldn't a god be the reason for the light source?
One of the best games I've ever played
Fascinating!
So he himself...was the God of Renewal
This is one of my favorite games EVER, and while the mod is great, it didn’t hold a candle to TFC
Are you sleeping better?
Ah yeah it's like night and day.
Yes that's how sleeping works.
lol
Love this game so so much
My 2021 GOTY!
What is this Oblivion?

Sounds like a job of reaally bad planning.
when they decided to change the setting to rome they had to redo all the pillars, aesthetics, clothes, light source, voice actors and backstories.
fixed your overlong video for you
The game is not very memorable unfortunately, maybe because the ending was so cliche
Explain ? Compare it to they majority of titles, can you justify your argument?
For me it was 2021s Game of the Year.
Excited for a sequel.
