Hey Guys I said something slightly wrong in the video. There wasn't an option of Black or Chrome on the RG/SG Special in 2020. It was Black only. In 2021 Model year H-D introduced the option of either black or chrome on the specials. That option has carried over to the 2022 model year.
When will HD put a better suspension system on their touring bikes? The stock systems are just horrible. Seeing as the "Touring" category should also be about comfort.
Great video Matt. I owned a 21 SGS and a 22 SG ST. The ST seemed to always be my go to bike so I sold the special. The ST rear suspension is so much more compliant and easy over bumps. Plus I added a stock SG seat and passenger pegs so it checks all my boxes now. Of course the 117 is wonderful.
My buddy has a Street Glide 107 with a Stage 3 119 kit and it flies. It rips hard we believe because of the shorter stroke crank from the 107 makes it rev so quickly.
Still trying to figure out why HD refuses to go forward with LED lights standard. Why they want to live in the 1950’s I really don’t know. With more and more distracted drivers out there HD would rather profit than focus on safety and visibility.
They need to differences between models. They seem to regard the lights as a feature they can use in that way. Agree should be standard, along with many other things!
Yes me too! The 107 with a cam, full exhaust and a good tune .. will make more than 114 And cost less Only add on id do is the nicer head unit I like the full sized engine guards I have a FLHR. RK STANDARD i prefer it to the special .. ALLLL DAY
That $6k savings on the standard can do a lot Cam, exhaust, tune Bars Some other items .. like PASSING LAMPS.. LED lights from hog works or Advan black And maybe some other stuff like a detachable chopped tour pack (Amazon) And you’ll have a dope bike that gonna be at a mjch better “starting point” than for the same money .. u won’t even have damn slip ons
I have both a street glide special and a road glide st! My street glide has a stage 3 117 and my road glide for now is stock with slip ons! I gotta say that the st is a real ripper right outta the box! I think if you’re looking for power and riding aggressively! The st is 100 percent way to go!!!
Good review Matt lots of info and the vid shots were done well also, things were smooth and steady, just right. I've watched reviews lately that the video of the subject didn't dwell on target long enough for people to actually focus on the intended topic. 👍
Excellent content brother. I purchased a 2020 RGS blacked out with a Stage 4 131 kit. This thing likes for you to be north of 3000 rpm. It pulls like a freight train. One thing I found out later was it came with the RDRS and traction control. I love the hill assist. Being my first bike is a 2022 street Bob. Going to a Bagger should have been my first choice. But I love both bikes.
I absolutely love the White Sand Pearl with the chrome. I like a mix of all the models. I like the standard bags. I like the gloss dash and the smaller console with the offset filler. I also would rather have the long travel rear suspension. If I had to choose one to start with I would probably get the standard and upgrade the rear suspension. The rest is nice, but not worth the extra money for me personally.
Always a comprehensive breakdown of bikes where we wonder what the differences are. We learn who the bike is for and why you should buy which one. I bought used through Craig’s’ , got more bike for my budget but someday it’ll be a Laidlaws bike if I go new again.
Went with the Special on the Roadglide Reef Biue/Vivid Blk, and chrome trim, I just think the contrast wheels, and motor look awesome, had four blacked out bikes gets old after a while, and for 900 bucks put that towards a 128
Thanks Matt. If I get the road glide standard, and then upgrade the stereo for the $900, do I need to also upgrade the speakers as well, and should include that in my cost assessment? In other words, are the speakers the same in the road glide special and road glide standard?
Matt, great breakdown of the differences of those three bikes. They each really have separate identity, so a bike to suit anyones riding needs. Did you say the 2020 RGS came with a chrome option? Versus a blacked out option?

I might have to dig around to see what that bike looked like chrome. Always dug chrome, glad it’s making a comeback. I hear in 2023 the Road King Standard with leather bags will not be made anymore??
Which part? The camera is always moving around. Nick is using a hand held gimble. Then there is a stationary camera getting the full bike. There is no helmet in this video. Not sure what you’re talking about.
I'm not a mechanic and I am new to the Harley world. It seems that the " characteristics" , mechanically speaking, of the street and road glide standard's are more well understood than the specials and ST model's. @ Matt Laidlaw
The engines are pretty much identical other than bore, stroke, and cams (with associated calibration). Other than that, the engines are identical in their operation.
Great video Matt! I bought a 2022 RG special in all black, but it came with the standard wheel, not the black prodigy wheels. Any advice? Is there anything I can do?
Great review as always. We decided on the Road Glide Limited as we wanted a full dresser. I like the bronze highlights on the ST, stands out from the basic chrome or blacked out options. Interested in what the future holds for the Road Glide line over the next few years. Would be nice to a see an updated engine (dare I say a Revolution Max tuned for a dresser), one can only wonder. :)
The prices u mentioned are different than the dealer l went to here in Norfolk Va. he told me the RGST was $37k, the Special about $1.5k less. And a black RK special $27k. Dealer here prices are to high! The dealer here didn’t have price tags on the bikes.
Most dealerships add their own markup ontop. My dealer is probably closer to yours in pricing 😢 Matt’s dealership is known to sell for msrp, unsure how that works if you don’t live in Cali tho 😂
@@bigbob21 lve lived there before l was in the Navy there. NAS Lemoore and NAS North Island, San Diego. To expensive. MSRP at least sounds reasonable. I looked at a RK Special Deadwood green in Durham, NC. It was used but just a few miles on it. They told me 22k. That sounded more on spot.

Thanks for the look. I like them all. I'm totally happy with my '18 Street Glide Standard in Electric Blue and chrome. It's got Stage 1 Screaming Eagle and vented oil cap and head breathers. Its got a few other custom stuff as well. It reminds me of the first bike I coveted as a kid. The '69 Electa Glide.
I have a Kawasaki 650. To get it ready for long haul riding, I need a bit of stuff added. What I love is how it corners and the power that still exists at 80. I’m guessing Harleys have that high end power, but how’s the cornering? I get what he’s saying about stretch bags getting in the way
Great video. I really wish all dealers were as trustworthy and had the heart of a teacher like you do. Don't the STs have smaller wheels? I saw one at my dealer and the front wheel was a 16. Also, the STs don't seem to be very hot sellers. Maybe people realize they are just high priced stripped models. All you really get is a 117. There were four at one dealer, and 5 at another. Plus a used one. Can't find Softails to save your life though. Wonder how long they'll last on the line. For me, the Street Glide or Electra Glide Standard would be my choice.

Hey how’s it going love your videos. I learned a lot about Harley’s just from watching your videos. I’m trying to decide between a street glide and an Indian chieftain for my next bike and I’m at a lost. What makes the street glide a better purchase than an Indian?
It's cheaper because it's cheaper for H-D to do it. Mostly because there are less quality control issues with Chrome. Black has more instances of being sent back etc due to imperfections during manufacturing etc
If only H-D could apply the same quality of chrome to the spokes of the Softail wire spoked wheel models (they rust easily and badly). Perhaps H-D don't care about the quality from the supplier of the spokes.
Matt i just purchased a 2023 RG ST do you know if they run hot ? I traded a 15 SGS and kept my 15 CVO RG that i call my 45 thousand dollar oven. Lol i have 84 k miles on the RG can you imagine if i drove it on hot days i had 27k miles on my SGS. ty
Wow I didn’t like the road glide because of the shark nose faring but it grew on me now I love it and can’t stop thinking about it so next year I’m getting a rg damit!!!

The bikes are actually very stable to ride. That said, they are much heavier and more skill and knowledge is required, at least very useful/helpful, for slow speed maneuvering. That is not to say that a new rider couldn't ride these bikes but, if you were to ask me, I would street you toward something a little lighter, maybe the low rider ST (if you want some touring capacity), to start with.
It's just dawned on me that in the next year or so, the M8 will have already been out almost half as long as the Twin Cam was. Yet we still view it as the "new" big twin.
Looks ☆GREAT☆ Matt, I am waiting for the Limited Anniversary model but on the fence on which style I want as I have owned both. Plus it is like you said Matt you see me more as a CVO~GUY
CVO’s have a lot more than just a 117 motor. Stereo, paint, wheels, foot and hand controls, wireless headset, heated grips, custom seat, (heated seat), etc
The fact that ABS is a paid option for an 800 pound 22,000 dollar motorcycle in 2023 is crazy. I like Harley Davidson motorcycles but the penny pinching from corporate is insane.
Bro, a leftover 2022 road glide special(chrome) over here in Florida is selling for 36k(nothing extra done to it, and they wont list on the website so you know it's shady) , I told them I would rather pay $900 for a ticket, and fly to Laidlaw's HD and ride it back and it would still be cheaper. The mark up for a bike before taxes and fees is insane here (north FL) . I am waiting till I move this summer and then I will see about flying out to buy a bike if the next place I got has dealers doing shady shit like that.....MSRP + taxes and any upgrades to the bike is expected if they modified it at all, and added price for special color options i get, but where is the 8k coming from.....so tired of shady Harley dealers. I think Pensacola and laidlaws are some of the better hd dealers ive seen/ visited
Great information thanks and well presented by the guy chatting. However, the swerving around of the camera man, moving the camera too fast causing it to 'blur' and the in and out of focus was frustrating and a little vertigo causing! God comparison and info though, thank you.
Will never understand why Harley did away with putting lowers on the touring models another reason why I won't be getting rid of my 18 FLHTK besides it being paid off also.
You can install lowers as you see fit. The street glides and road glides never came with lowers other than the CVO's. The bikes with lowers were filling touring models with tour packs.
I’d buy one if the H-D Dealership didn’t mark it up beyond believe and tack on tons of up charges which includes a $699 doc fee… what kind of documents do they have to file???? I mean, come on man!
@@MattLaidlaw By that I mean all the things they have made optional, for starters RDRS and ABS, Larger Infotainment system, Passenger seat and footpegs. Leave it on the customer to remove it if they don't want a passenger seat and pegs but at these prices it should be standard. And this is not just for Harley, it's for every other manufacturer who does this. Customer choosing to upgrade a part or go for an aftermarket part is their choice but as a manufacturer they should not skimp out on the basics or necessary things.

It's the same when you buy a car, you pay for the options and trim packages you want. Even though they cost 35-40k to start. You want the bigger engine? You want the leather seats? You want the 19" wheels? They you need to pay 45k for the car. Or should they just throw all that in because you think it's too expensive?
I don't know what it is with these new Harley baggers, but they can't carry fat girls like older bikes. Back in the day, last call at the Golden Coral, I'd easily ride away with a 350+ lady. Now, seems like my new(er) bike struggles with any passenger over 280lb. WTF!
After spending all that money, 99% of the buyers upgrade the terrible suspension, the useless screen, bars, exhaust, lights, intake, etc.. The "ST"? How German is that "Sport Touring" I guess the German CEO is working hard. What's next? Harley - Gelände/Straße (GS) Model 😂😂😂
"useless"... You do know Harley must meet worldwide noise and emissions standards, right? Explain to me how the handlebars are "useless". Also, the STs don't seem to be very hot sellers. Maybe people realize they are just high priced stripped models. All you really get is a 117. There were four at one dealer, and 5 at another. Plus a used one. Can't find Softails to save your life though. Wonder how long they'll last on the line. For me, the Street Glide or Electra Glide Standard would be my choice.

I just don’t understand how chrome can be cheaper than paint. It’s good for me because I like chrome.
It's cheaper because it's cheaper for H-D to do it. Mostly because there are less quality control issues with Chrome. Black has more instances of being sent back etc due to imperfections during manufacturing etc
Maybe it’s because the black is more in demand so the the price is higher whether or not the manufacturing cost is greater

If only H-D could apply the same quality of chrome to the spokes of the Softail wire spoked wheel models (they rust easily and badly). Perhaps H-D don't care about the quality from the supplier of the spokes.

Matt i just purchased a 2023 RG ST do you know if they run hot ? I traded a 15 SGS and kept my 15 CVO RG that i call my 45 thousand dollar oven. Lol i have 84 k miles on the RG can you imagine if i drove it on hot days i had 27k miles on my SGS. ty
All motorcycles are hot. You have an internal combustion engine between your legs. Throw a pair of jeans on and enjoy the ride.

The bikes are actually very stable to ride. That said, they are much heavier and more skill and knowledge is required, at least very useful/helpful, for slow speed maneuvering. That is not to say that a new rider couldn't ride these bikes but, if you were to ask me, I would street you toward something a little lighter, maybe the low rider ST (if you want some touring capacity), to start with.

It's just dawned on me that in the next year or so, the M8 will have already been out almost half as long as the Twin Cam was. Yet we still view it as the "new" big twin.
The twin can was available for 19 years ('98-2017). The M8 has only been out 6 going on 7) years.

CVO’s have a lot more than just a 117 motor. Stereo, paint, wheels, foot and hand controls, wireless headset, heated grips, custom seat, (heated seat), etc

The fact that ABS is a paid option for an 800 pound 22,000 dollar motorcycle in 2023 is crazy. I like Harley Davidson motorcycles but the penny pinching from corporate is insane.
Bro, a leftover 2022 road glide special(chrome) over here in Florida is selling for 36k(nothing extra done to it, and they wont list on the website so you know it's shady) , I told them I would rather pay $900 for a ticket, and fly to Laidlaw's HD and ride it back and it would still be cheaper. The mark up for a bike before taxes and fees is insane here (north FL) . I am waiting till I move this summer and then I will see about flying out to buy a bike if the next place I got has dealers doing shady shit like that.....MSRP + taxes and any upgrades to the bike is expected if they modified it at all, and added price for special color options i get, but where is the 8k coming from.....so tired of shady Harley dealers. I think Pensacola and laidlaws are some of the better hd dealers ive seen/ visited

Will never understand why Harley did away with putting lowers on the touring models another reason why I won't be getting rid of my 18 FLHTK besides it being paid off also.
You can install lowers as you see fit. The street glides and road glides never came with lowers other than the CVO's. The bikes with lowers were filling touring models with tour packs.
Memphis Shades makes lowers. 😉

@@MattLaidlaw By that I mean all the things they have made optional, for starters RDRS and ABS, Larger Infotainment system, Passenger seat and footpegs. Leave it on the customer to remove it if they don't want a passenger seat and pegs but at these prices it should be standard. And this is not just for Harley, it's for every other manufacturer who does this. Customer choosing to upgrade a part or go for an aftermarket part is their choice but as a manufacturer they should not skimp out on the basics or necessary things.

I don't know what it is with these new Harley baggers, but they can't carry fat girls like older bikes. Back in the day, last call at the Golden Coral, I'd easily ride away with a 350+ lady. Now, seems like my new(er) bike struggles with any passenger over 280lb. WTF!
