  • Detailed look at the Road Glide Special compared to a Road Glide (standard) and Street Glide. Matt Laidlaw and the Crew from Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson take out these 3 bikes and weigh in with their opinion. Great video for anyone considering this bike to add to their fleet.

    Excellent review Matt. Enjoyed it immensely. Love to have a Road Glide. Very expensive down here in Australia. Currently riding a 2018 883 Iron would love to trade it in a Road Glide here. I can still dream. All the best for the New Year.

    Having Nick and/or Andrew along on these rides has been very useful for both introducing different bike preferences as well as demonstrating rideability for people of different heights. I'm 5'08" & ride an '09 Low Rider (which I'll probably keep for life) but have the idea of an HD touring model on my mental back burner for the day I'm no longer living paycheck to paycheck! Nothing wrong with saving money & staying out of debt! Great vid, as always brother.

    Hey Matt, I just test rode the 2019 RGS and all I can say is WOW!! The motor, the fly by wire response of the throttle, ergonomics...the list goes on and on. I also test rode a SGS to compare the two because I was leaning towards the SGS....but no more, the RGS fits me much better relative to leg and arm positions. I personally felt too compact on the SG. I would have a tendency to use the GPS more than the dial gauges, so with it being higher up towards the forward view on the RGS, that was a huge plus as well. I can't tell you how many times I've watched both of your reviews for these bikes and I appreciate all of the information and opinions you have on them. I swear you could sell used condoms to the military...no prob...LOL,

    Enjoy your videos! One thing I think that hurts Harley sales is they do not change much until recently so people are happy to keep their older bikes longer or buy one a few a years older vs new. Car manufacturers or other bike manufacturers always offer more options or more horsepower every year besides new paint jobs. Harley is a premium manufacturer that tell you to buy performance parts before your out the door with a new bike. They should come out of the factory with stage 4 ready to go. It seems they are trying to pass EPA emissions which is harder on air cooled bikes buy offering different stages after the purchase. I almost bought a FXDR but opted for a 2018 Super Duke 1290r. The FXDR 114 was a little heavy and around 90 horsepower for $21,000. The Super Duke was $18,000 with 177 horsepower and 106 ft pounds torque, Traction control, cornering ABS, Stability Control, TFT dash, single sided swing arm, and LED everything. Just like GM had to go through bankruptcy to catch up with global sales vs just rental car sales, Harley’s bikes have to be as good or better than global competition in all categories of bikes. Starting with kids getting involved with dirt bikes.

    Great review as always Matt! My friends and I go through each of your videos several times. We even go through certain bits over and again, as we get thrilled when we hear you telling certain facts about the bikes, esp on the technology side! You are sharing great knowledge with us.
    We have been waiting for a long time now to see your full review on the Ultra Limited. The last one you did was on a 2017 model, after it was just a comparison video between a 2018 Ultra limited and Ultra limited low. We would like to see your detailed review on the 2019 FLHTK and as well explain the differences over the 2018 year model. I own a 2018 FLHTK and have ridden the 2019 model now. I see there is a noticeble change in the way you feel the weight at the fork. It feels quite light now compared to 2018 model. Wondering if the redesigning of the boombox is one contributing factor to this. Also the seat seems to be slightly hard. Appreciate if you could let us know your opinion on these? Much Luv from Dubai !

My local Harley-Davidson dealership will be having a demo truck come in a few weeks and it lands on my birthday so I think I’ll treat myself to some free rides on some sweet ass bikes! I already told my buddy who works there that I’ll be there to ride them and who knows, maybe I’ll end up riding home with one and swapping my current bike out for it.

    I agree those rear shocks could definitely use some softening up. That's my only complaint with the specials. I went for the Roadglide Ultra for the more plush riding experience and did the detachable tour pack. Would of preferred the blacked out look of the special but when your riding a few hundred miles in a day I need that comfort over style.

    I love my 2019 street glide special !! I’m with you, I like the batwing faring, however it’s just a personal preference, the road glide is a baddass looking bike, a couple features “like the glove compartment” that’s really cool ... but I don’t like the reach to the touchscreen, and the fixed faring just seems a little strange... mentally it seems like it wouldn’t corner as well. I really like the look of both bikes kickstand down . What I really like about both bikes is that Harley Davidson did a really great job of making these new bikes look like they’ve already been customized. I didn’t feel the need to change anything about the bike right off the floor. Changing the bars may be one of the only things I might do in the near future, but the placement is perfect on the batwing to keep your hands warm, and I’m a guitarist so I like warm fingers if you know what I mean...

    Great info and comparison!!!! My love for the M8 makes me wonder why all the fuss with progress,the same riders drive automobiles in the 21st century, why do they complain about THE MOTORCOMPANY'S evolution.My choice to buy a 2018 FLHRXS was clearly due to the evolution of the brand and I am completely satisfied and can't wait for this riding season coming up.Happy new year and might see you this summer with my ride from Montreal.Canada.

  • @MaxFrisch100
    @MaxFrisch100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Customer feedback played a major role in the design of the M8 engine. Reduction of vibration levels was one of the bigger issues.It makes you wonder how anyone can complain about high vibration levels on any Harley Davidson motorcycle since the introduction of the Evo engine.
    That v-i-b-r-a-t-I-o-n is good! Owning a 2008 FXSTC I had the chance to ride a Dyna (Twin Cam A) for 2 days and that vibrating feel was unique and no other engine within the HD model range or from any competitor offers anything even close to what a Twin Cam A feels like. Unfortunately I don’t like the Dyna frame design ( 2 shock struts in the rear) so I did never get one.
    However now that there is only the M8 engine available for the big HD models a vital component has been erased for good. I hope that one day they will be removing those counterbalancers from the M8 and reinstall the good old rubber mounting again in a decent frame.

    Just traded my 107ci Anniversary Edition for a new 114ci Special and I can honestly say the power difference is not significant. There's just a tad bit more torque. The dyno graphs really show what you get. I didn't trade up for the power difference, I did it for the stretched bags, new infotainment system and blacked out look. It amazes me how you guys can split lanes and go ahead of cars inline at stoplights and stop signs. Cali is cool with that law. If you did that in Florida, Cagers would try and run you off the road.

    Best Comparison between the RG vs the SG ever!
    Only thing is I wish it had been filmed in the day so maybe someone might have commented on the visibility of the screen in the bright sun on the Road Glide compared to the Street Glide. I have heard the new screen this year is better in that regard on the 2019 Road Glide. I know some complained the screen washed out on the RG if the sun was at the wrong angle in prior years.

    • @MattLaidlaw

    Thanks Matt, another great vid and good to have Andrew and Nick’s points of view.
    I get my 2019 RGS in vivid black in March and am busy looking at mods at the moment. I’ve chosen to go with the Kahuna black grips with Chizeled Lo bars, a low sissy bar and the fang fairing with the low engine bars.
    The only question I’ve left to answer is the seat. I am looking at Lucky Davies’s DS, BMC Widow-maker or the Harley CVO seat with diamond stitch. I known you have the BMC on yours and have it tailored to suit which in your experience is the most comfortable?

    • @MattLaidlaw

    I see that nowadays more and more engines get the gloss-black finish on the different engine covers.
    How well does this finish compare with chrome and wrinkle black in terms of durability (i.e. will it get all beat up and have swirl marks over time if I ride long distances even through rain and may not be able to wash it during 10 - 15 day long trips)?
    Am I better of with wrinkle black?

    Hey Matt. It is not a myth as to the wind and vehicle turbulence causing your front end to buffet at high speed on a bat wing fairing. I rode a 2015 Ultra for several years, and traded it for a Road Glide CVO for that very reason. Riding to & from Sturgis on I-90 this summer was why. When passing trucks or riding in cross-wind across Wyoming, the front end of my Ultra would buffet at higher speeds. It is a little unnerving to say the least. With the Road Glide I have not had that buffeting at speeds of 75-90 mph. So, it is not so noticeable at lower speeds, but at freeway cruising speeds on I-90 across Montana & Wyoming, it is very noticeable. I think you are providing some info about the differences in the fairings that is just not true. The batwing attached to the forks causes the front end to buffet at higher speed, especially on long sweeping curves. The Shark fairing, attached to the frame provides a lot more high speed stability.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I can appreciate your personal experience with the two fairings. I do think the shark nose is only slightly
      Better in the wind. I’ve had my batwing fairing in very high winds and didn’t think the fairing is less functional than the Roadglide. That’s just been my experience. I feel that people put too much emphasis on the wind splitting properties of the road glide over the streetglide.

    I wonder how the passenger comfort would be between the Ultra and the Road glide with comparable aftermarket windshields. Regarding wind and buffeting.

    Great fan of your channel Matt.
    Your reviews and insight are intriguing to me.
    My question for you is where do you see the future of Harley Davidson? It certainly isn't in the heavy cruiser market.
    I read somewhere that Honda's top selling bike was the Grom which surprised me. Now they are bringing back the Super Cub and also have the Monkey bike based off the Grom. Seems like they are betting that the public wants a small 125cc motorcycle .
    Is Harley missing something here? Your thoughts please.

      Harley is one of the most recognizable brands with one of the most devote followings in the world. I don’t think they are going anywhere. That being said we are definitely seeing a shift in consumer preferences with this new generation of riders. They are more about smaller bikes that cost less. I think they still value the image and nostalgia of Harley-Davidson but just enjoy bikes in a different way. They are less About touring and exploring the open road. I have joked before and said they best entry level bike is a Grom or Scrambler and HD should make one. H-D really needs a bike to fit this niche.

    Can you tell me why the Vance & Hines Blk Monster V slip ons are not compatible on my 2019 roadglide? Is there a different pipe diameter. (I wanted to jump on a sale, and get some sound before investing in a full 2into 1 S&S sidewinder....

    I've always been a Batwing guy (My first and current Harleys were/are Batwing baggers) but the newer Shark Nose fairings are sexy as all Hell. If I were to ever trade the Ultra Classic it might just be for a Road Glide Special. I kinda think this Ultra is my last Harley though, it does everything perfectly, that I need a large touring bike to do.

    I just watched a video from Tampa Harley where they are advertising the 2019 Ultra Classic and they said that they are being discontinued. Is that true? Please tell me it’s not because I’m finally in a position where I can buy one once I get my current bike paid off and the ultra is going to be my next purchase as soon as the one I have is paid off and no I don’t want to trade it in. I do want an Ultra but I want to buy it brand new.

    What’s up, Matt? Welp, I ended up purchasing a 2019 Electra Glide Standard on yesterday. I picked it out of my choices of a 2019 Road King and a 2019 Softail Heritage 114. I also traded in my 2015 Iron 883 (wanted to badly upgrade). I really was originally going to pick between the Road King and the Softail Heritage. Do you feel in your own words that I made the right choice based on how I previously mentioned I ride, Matt? 🤷‍♂️

    Hey Matt, GREAT VIDEO AS USUAL!! I just wanted to know which motorcycle(s) would YOU recommend that I step up to from a 2015 Iron 883? I plan on doing some light freeway riding and mostly commuting/city stop and go riding as well. Would I need to be in the Softail or Touring family? 🤷‍♂️

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a softail with what little I know about your riding. If you aren’t doing much distance riding on the open highway then go softail.

      Matt, I appreciate you for your time and response. My riding history? Hmmmm....LOL! I just started riding in 2015 (learned @the Harley Store here). Help definitely is needed in which direction to go on an upgrade.

    How about the the helmet buffeting for taller guys on the 2018+ Street Glide Specials Matt? I am 6 ft and noticed helmet buffeting on a test ride with the SGS. You are 6 4” how did you deal with the buffeting.

      I noticed the forward placement of the ferring right off but I have long arms for a guy of 5'8". Good touch sensitive gloves will solve the fingerprint issue but I typically used the controls on the handle bars.

      Of the four bikes I have owned the best in handling was my current 19 FLTRXS, the 05 FLHRCI, the 07 sportster low injected and last in line the 05 XXLC which had a larger turn radius

    I seem to remember that you changed rear shocks on your SG. What can you recommend for someone who doesn't want lowered shocks on the RG? Thanks, Matt.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m running the Fox IFP-R 13 inch rear shocks. I like them but you could spend more and get an even better ride. These will get you good value or bang for your buck though. My next shocks I’ll probably try Russ Wernimont or Ohlins just to compare.

    One thing I'd like to know about the HD heel shifter lever. Does the threading on the screw extend all the way to the head under the rubber? The reason I ask is that I like heel shifters, but I also find HDs stick out too far as one commenter expressed. If the screw is fully threaded, it might be interesting to lop the thing in half and screw it back in. Maybe even take it to a quarter. I much prefer to angle my heel in a hair to make an upshift than have the shifter stick out so far and eliminate such a large amount floorboard real estate.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s good question. I think it threads approximately 50% through the body of the heel shifter peg. I could be wrong here though.

    • @zxjockey
      @zxjockey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      saddlebag I think that Matt is right about 50%. Being a “Classic” shifter guy, I took mine right off and capped the spline shaft. Even with the peg shortened, it just eats up too much of the floorboard.
