In my mind, you're doing things right. I spent a lot of time making stuff work that maybe wasn't top quality, and now that I'm a retiree, and have lots of time (hah), I still spend the majority of it working on stuff that "ain't exactly new." But if nothing else, having stuff that needs fixing gives me a chance to learn new skills, or at least re-learn old ones. Thanks for the video!
Sounds like my life. Grew up in a family of 11 and Dad only had used junk that seemed to have the hood up all the time. He loved the big old Buicks from the 50's and we always had one in the driveway and one, (parts car), in the side yard. Good memories.
Check your front wheel bearings for grease, the transmission and rear end for gear oil. May want to change gear oil. Hope she works great. Great project. God bless

The timing marks for the engine, do not tell you what stroke you are on. Seeing where both valves are then using the timing mark will identify what stroke you are on.
I know a lot of first timers have made the mistake on gas engines, when trying to time the ignition by using the timing mark alone. It doesn't work well and can lead to a ear drum rattling experience, when the spark ignites the gas with the exhaust valve open 😁
On valve cover gaskets, I like to use a tacky substance, like Permatex form a gasket, as a light coat on the cover side. It helps keep things lined up when putting the cover on, and can help prevent small leaks IMO.

It looks like you had some exhaust coming out at 31:52 but then it stopped after changing the fuel shutoff position. Enjoying the videos. If the backhoe worked on the first try it wouldn't be enjoyable to watch and I wouldn't learn anything. Thanks for sharing the cost breakdown so far.

Fingers crossed it all goes well. I would say having the wrong piston rings could have been the same problem with using the new big end bearings. 1 tip is when building an engine after fitting a bearing turn the engine if it jams up you know which 1 is the problem. By right you should never use the head gasket once it's been torqued down, so if a overheating problem occurs you'll need to change it. Also ensure all your bolt holes are clean and dry as if you have water in the hole it can hydraulic and crack the head. Last thing always have a clean air filter fitted, don't know what it is with you guys over the pond but without an air filter you wear out the pistons.
Good progress made. As for the hydraulics it amazes me how often people assume something is broken when basic maintenance would resolve the issue.
As for the overall appearance....... She don't have to look good as long as she runs good.
Just a heads up Mike, the audio and video of your recent vids seems to be out of sync in certain areas. I thought it was on my end, but trying multiple browsers didn't make any difference. If you want to look into it, watch @3:18 for a section out of sync, and @5:37 for in sync (it's not 100%, but pretty close). No idea if it's in the raw footage, or if something is happening when it's uploaded. Thought you might want to know though....

Cap’n, while waiting to see if you were gonna drop a video this morning… I watched a Hedblom video. I marveled at just how simple, smooth and flawlessly artistic he operates his excavator. His videos never show that anything goes wrong.
Then your notice popped up… and, it struck me that the contrast was stark! Your video editing skills far exceed his. You sir have achieved mastery of maximizing errors, finding those of both yourself and others while using uncomfortably placed camera positions that plunge us viewers right into the chaos!
Now, I’ve also told you before that watching every commercial, to its end, is part of my commitment to responsible subscribership to your channel… so, I finally watched that knife ad that has been popping up all week. And, it did not disappoint me one bit! Right there in big bold text it proclaimed to be the perfect kitchen ‘Tensile’ for preparing meals for my dinner ‘Guess’!
Cap’n the irony of having that ad attach itself to your video is… well, ironic!!!

Mike, always remember that you can now say you have stripped down a 555 engine a couple of times at least, so not amateur but a semi-pro. Also, you are like me time is mine to use as and when I wish on what I wish, if it is learning something new, then it is priceless. Also, Mike what fun is there in going to a dealer paying over the odds (especially right now) to get something that is no challenge to the mind only the pocket that runs, where is the fun in that I ask?
No, you are doing it your way, the right way as for shall we say in the end a cost of $5k and you have a machine worth at least double to many but a lot more to you and the family. The effort, time and frustration are the learning curves unfortunately that many people miss out on and if or when there is a breakdown they phone the dealer, where you with some understanding of your machine will be able to repair it at a cost that others would be envious of. Oh, also quicker as well.
So, thank you for the videos and bringing me back memories that I had forgotten, I swear I could even smell the dirty hydraulic oil and diesel, I have never seen the hydraulic filter in one of those that flat before, and that was caused by suction not pressure so I feel that the pump might just be fine. Have fun with the hoses and cylinder seals, but you are an old pro at those now. Thank you Regards to the family plus, 'Dog', Stay Safe and well.

For those of us without lots of cash backing things up sometimes working on old equipment and trying to get it back to working order is the only real alternative. For myself I've had to rebuild several pieces of machinery, Table saw, band saw, drill press....just to get needed equipment that instead of costing me thousands of $$ was kept to a few hundred. Keep up the great work Mike, looks aren't everything!

Hope you got the old bearings back in the same places and orientation as original. You may not be able to see or measure the variances from them wearing in, but it matters.

To have only spent $400 on parts is good, transport costs is a one off and worth the effort (thank you Clint for finding this diamond in the rough and giving Mike the opportunity to have this ) and the time you have put into this will expand your knowledge and capabilities no end !!!
The filter was definitely past its best, no wonder the strainer was blocked, now there will be plenty of hydraulic pressure to pop those hoses 😬🤦♂️

I agree with everything Clint told you as we both are diesel mechanics. I have found out that over time, when people have had their feelings hurt, you can not tell them if they did good or bad. We only try to save you from our own learning mistakes. I do believe its going to run ok. I am going to say that if you look at a cam shaft up close and personal, you will understand more about how to adjust a valve right than anyone can tell you. That way, your not going to have a valve that is on a partial up, on the cam. Making it too loose when adjusted or getting one too tight, because of what it looks like as those valves move up and down. I am really mystified at the rod being the problem when everything was in right in the first place. One small suggestion should you ever find yourself in this again, loosen a cap and see if it turns a engine loose. Its pointing at one or more of those new bearings were not what they said they were. I would of used those old bearings anyway because if good, they are just that.... good to go..I just hope that now things look, feel, and go better Mike. I am not the guy who pees on someones parade.
I’d counter that it’s a long way from junk. Old thing looks decently solid where it counts. If you spend $5k to have a reliable machine that fits the majority of your needs, you are so far ahead that you have to just forget the figures. The “right now” availability of equipment is something that can hardly have an assigned value. You’re doing great work and the results will be worth to you.
Exactly, being able to walk out and work on what I want to work on when I want to do it is worth it.

Engine assemble graphite lube or Lucus honey oil applied to the bearings helps BIG time on prestart's till the oil gets cycled.🤔👍👍Another neat trick. On the timing drum. Put a paint mark and piston # for the other pistons top dead center plus a rotation number for each after # one is on zero top dead center. Makes for faster valve lashing adjustments.

It's not junk if you can fix it and use it. I think it is great you can take something and make it usable rather than throw it away. One thing we have wrong in today's USA is if it is old throw it away. I have a friend who drives upper class neighborhoods and picks up things that are being thrown away. Much of it is very good stuff and they complain about landfills filling up.

Progress!!! Great work hang in there with it. We have an old 4000 ford and did away with the intake heater. We thought if it failed the heater pieces were headed straight for the intake valves…. We put an in line block heater in and tractor starts great in cold weather…keep pushing you will

I had the same issue with filters and screens, plugged from lack of service, changed all the fluids (twice) and added an extra spin on filter which has cleaned up the oil. Now the pump works as it should without the funny noise. Lookin good Mike, Keep smilin
I was thinking about modifying that screen setup. Kind of a pain that I have to drain ten gallons to get to it.
@@CaptainKleeman I straightened mine just like you did, put it back in and no issues. the spin on filter caught let leftover grime in the oil. we checked the screen and it was clean . We changed the spin on filter 3 times now, the last time it was clean also. Hope this helps.

If you plan on working on engines, highly recommend getting a remote starter switch. Just a momentary that goes between the battery positive and the starter solenoid so you can watch the engine easier while you bump it. Also just turns the engine and keeps everything else off. They are also cheap.
I have a smaller one for smaller engines. Definitely handy
@@CaptainKleeman should probably still work for big engines then. It just sends the signal to the solenoid (not the starter motor itself) so carries very little amperage. Does the same thing as the start wire in the ignition switch without turning everything else on.
Mike your time is yours to charge or not! If you get that running it will definitely save you time and your body,which is what you will be using if you do the same projects without it. It is definitely worth the time now so when you are retired you will be able to enjoy it also! That is time well spent. Hope you feel better soon. This crud is bad. Hope the family is getting better. I look forward to your videos but you take care of you and the family which is much more important!

Thanks for another great sunday video with Mike. I think for the time and money invested your ahead for sure. You have probably fixed or replaced all the big major components so at this point once you get it started and fluids flowing you can see whats next. But i bet she fires once you get the heat turned up in the shop lol.

The frontmost coolant hole can be closed, we made threads and put a plug little lower than the surface the coolant holes are for a gasoline engine only.
I need it for the cab heat
@@CaptainKleeman Yes, it is often used for that. We have made the cab heat hose connection into the rearmost place through the manifold plate, the manifold seems to bend most at the front section,, at least the 4-cyl motors do that. Especially when turbocharging with higher pressures, the manifold often starts to leak. We glued the manifold for added strenght and also grinded the surface straight.

Take the screen off and clean it. Just remove the hose clamp and pull the assembly off and wash it in a parts washer or brake cleaner.
“Time”..! what the hell is that…!
With these kinds of projects “time” cannot be factored in. If you are someone who is in the line of work that say a “Clinton” at C & C Equipment., type.., well then., that is a whole different kinda story. Even with $400 in parts & “Clinton’s” fee(s)., you are/will still be ahead in the game.
I checked around some of the used equipment papers, auctions, etc., and this particular unit showed sales ranging from $3500-$7500.. Obviously this sized unit has long since fell off., in what most folks/entities running a backhoe in their business(s)., are using., but there still is/are “niches” that they fit.

If you have problems cold starting you can take a heat gun or small propane torch and pump some heat into the intake before starting. I had to do this with my old tractor and it made a huge difference in how it started when it was cold.
I like the aftermarket piston checker. Not as fancy as the OEM. Lol God bless

Don't worry about camera angles. Do the best you can and move on. Thought about a propane heater under that cover when you are working.
I thought about it too, but then just know I would hit it directly with brake clean 😂😂

I think you set a new record with your humorous remarks in this video Mike. Love it. Great job and if everything works when you fire it up, I'd probably change out that hydraulic screen even if you have to replace the whole assembly. I was in your position once and just wish I was around someone like you at the time to have helped temper my anger by taking a more humorous approach.
