    Chrome - web/cloud apps
    Android - mobile/touch apps
    Linux - desktop/dev apps
    Cool for the future when they get this working as a seamless experience. ChromeOS could become the ultimate OS.

      Wouldn't say ultimate since it still has major flaws in Android and linux but i love that google is expanding

      @@veryfrozen3271 It's getting close. once USB, audio and vid acceleration is there ... IDK that I would ever need a win or mac laptop at all. On the other hand .... I can't imagine doing heavy audio/video editing without my Win or Mac desktops.

    Helpful video thx Gary. FYI I've been running VS Code on my i7 G8 ASUS Chromebox 3 using Developer channel for a couple of weeks now. Right now, to get going quickly, developers should choose Intel based 64-bit Chrome OS devices and install from the terminal. I've also been able to update from the terminal too but not from within VS Code as yet. A few hundred dollars to bring the Chromebox 3 up to 16GB OF RAM & with my dp + HDMI dual monitor set-up I'm ready to code web apps.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing that. So I guess VS Code, Android Studio and other programs like Sublime Text, Atom.io and even IntelliJ work well on Intel. The good news is that Arm ports are possible, without too much effort (I guess).

    Exactly! Storage! Personally, I would be immensely pleased with such a Chromebook like Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA-DH75-G, but with a 512 GB SSD. Maybe with a slightly bigger screen, like by 1 inch, but the main thing is the storage.

      A 14" Chromebook with a 1TB M.2 SSD, full HD screen, 2-in-1 capability, i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a good keyboard would be the ideal mobile web development machine. At that point, Apple would shart itself.

    I have an idea for a video; how is it that Windows 10 can be installed on basically any computer, dating back decades, but Android 8.1 can only be installed on new devices that specifically support it. And Android phones will only get updates for a few years, while Windows just keep going until the computer is totally unusable?
    I'm pretty sure I know the answers, but I would love to hear your thoughts on it. And also why Android hasn't decided to become more like Windows in that sense.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Android could be installed on any device, evening going back many years (assuming it has enough RAM and internal storage). The difference is that OEMs have no need to do this. In the smartphone world there is no standard for how a device behaves internally, so each SoC maker and each OEM needs a customized version of Android specifically for that device. In the PC world there is a standard that has developed over many years starting way back with the idea of an "IBM Compatible PC".

    • @Anton-cv2ti
      @Anton-cv2ti 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gary Explains Thanks for the answer. I still think there's more to it though.
      To me, Android's single biggest issue today is it's comparably terrible security, since devices only get security updates for a few years, even though they are often used for longer than that. And users don't get the latest features, which is also annoying. So I think this issue is worth doing some research on. Like you could talk about how drivers work in Windows vs Android. Then maybe consider if Android drivers need to be custom in order to enable quicker development of new features, or whether it is to improve performance, which is generally more important compared to PC's. If none of that is true, then why haven't Google done anything to fix it? They are not shy to making big changes to their platform, and they could start doing it internally on their pixel lineup before a general release. It could also be opt-in for a few years. It really baffles me that such a plan doesn't exist, and I would love to hear your ideas on it. But I guess I can't force you to make the video ;)

    • @person2984
      @person2984 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anton Juul-Naber My understanding is much the same as Gary's--Android isn't properly abstracted from it's lower layers and hardware components (and how they talk to each other) aren't standardized so those lower layers need to be custom built for every device for every Android release. In Android 8.0, Google did properly abstract Android from the underlying hardware, but maintaining the HALs to continue to be compatible with Android going forward still has its challenges. For one, Google has very little influence over component manufacturers; they'd most likely have to build their own SoC to get around these issues for their own devices.
      There's also the issue of Android's top layer, that for each device it's essentially a separate 'distro'. Think of it like Ubuntu and an Ubuntu derivative like ElementaryOS. Despite its roots, when Ubuntu gets updated, you can't just update ElementaryOS' underlying Ubuntu; the OS has its own schedule for integrating the updated code. It's a similar situation for Android except that there's an expectation for more immediate integrations. Even if Android did have its underlying hardware issues sorted there's still the issue that while Windows is just Windows, every Android device technically runs its own Android.

    I'm not entirely sure I like running programs non-natively.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sort of, but not really. A container doesn't do any emulation or code translation, it just isolates the user Linux part from the system Linux part. That way users can't delete files that would break Chrome OS or install things that would break Chrome OS. It is a way to separate it so the rest of the system remains stable and protected.

    • @DarkOracleOfDeath
      @DarkOracleOfDeath 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Explains Fair enough. Well, I can't wait to see the future development. 😁
      With this kind of movement I believe Linux will get more traction. Maybe even more than MacOS has. I doubt that it will ever compete with Windows, but Mac seems an easy target in my opinion. The only thing that's missing is interest from large corporations like Adobe, Autodesk, etc. But hopefully soon we'll get that as well if Linux/Chrome OS machines begin selling better.

    Hi Gary! I would like you to explain why people bother with Chromebooks when regular Linux is better. I had an old computer and I was thinking about using a program on the internet, Nevercloud or something, that would convert it to a chromebook but it didn't even have enough memory for that so I put Lubuntu on it and it works ok and it gets me all the Linux apps and I put the chrome browser on it and I get all the google cloud apts as well. Maybe if they came down on price on the good chromebooks I might get one but most of the good ones are just as expensive as any other computer.

There are no chromebooks with thunderbolt 3 which is a real shame, since Google's Pixelbook goes upto a core i7 and a price tag of whopping $1700.

    For Debian OS bugs/crashes should be reported via the "reportbug" command, Gary if u could please report the few crashes u observed on aarch64 that would be wonderful. U may also wish to read wiki.debian.org/Arm64Port

    Is it possible to have a Kotlin Native ( th-cam.com/video/3K3oQ22nqfo/w-d-xo.html ) program (using GTK3 - github.com/JetBrains/kotlin-native/tree/master/samples/gtk ) run on a Chromebook?

      My guess would be that the x86 compiler would work on Intel based Chromebooks and that you can target Arm platforms from that compiler, just like you would on a distro like Ubuntu running on Intel.

    developer sector that's why it has such high specifications i5, 8GB, and a HD screen?
    the same reason that Microsoft put Linux on windows 10, its for Linux Development environment.

      Nimrod levy, why?

    • @nimrodlevy
      @nimrodlevy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sacchi so ill be able to run things like gimp nativly. Although containers share kernel they're still problems achieving the same performance.. chromeos is not exactly opensource all the google components has been tripped away. I dont get it why ots so hard to load some extra software objects at boot time so chromeos will act like full fledged gnu distro and with its all functionality.

    • @person2984
      @person2984 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nimrod levy Security. Google even has a number of limitation's on Android's ability to touch ChromeOS but Linux being capable of running unvetted, arbitrary code needed a few extra layers. If performance is your worry, it's largely indistinguishible from native.

    In October of 2018 Google had a data breach, too many hands in the pot and some engineer had an oops, Linux is supposed to be the secure private OS.....I'm a bit confused, why would I want to run Linux on a platform that might puke my information all over the front lawn. I wonder if this is Googles way to swallow up the Linux kernel, to me it's like the spider saying to the fly, "Enter my parlor."

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google did not have a data breach, it was a bug which exposed data unwittingly and there was no evidence that anybody else knew about it. Second, it had nothing to do with Linux.

      @@GaryExplains Sir I don't want to get into an argument with you, but I can't see how Google allowing Linux to come load app's is benevolent but rather an inroad to the Linux community first for a bigger market share for itself. How inviting would it be to have the ability to run Steam on a Chromebook, the gaming nerds would be jumping for joy. Secondly Google is all about the Internet of things and so is Canonical what would happen if Google would plop down XX Billion's of dollars and bought Canonical, under the guise that "See we like Linux, and Canonical can help with IoT," like IBM did Red Hat and "Cloud computing". It is too soon to see what happens to Red Hat but becoming "corporatized," usually doesn't end well. I think there are some very sharp teeth behind the smile. I wasn't saying that it was a Linux problem with data breach it was an issue with Google who doesn't care about our personal data and it's odd that the Linux community that is supposed to be about privacy would consider using a platform that is connected with data mining corp like Google.

      @@GaryExplains I have a do nothing Tracfone, prior to that I had a Casio Brigade G,Zone what an awesome phone I miss that phone, it just gave up the ghost. Now before you ask, I don't Facebook, Twitter, or any such social media absolutely no social media, unless you consider TH-cam a social media, I don't use job finding search engines like Monster or LinkedIn, I don't video stream from places like Hulu. I don't have a Kindle or an Amazon account, I don't have Google home, since you know I use Linux I don't have Cortana. I use Duck Duck go as my search engine. I switched my primary email to Protonmail. Unfortunately I still have a gmail only because prior to 2017 I was elected as a deacon at church, and many of the people in my care are older and they get confused over email changing, my term ends in May of next year then gmail will be gone. Why I don't do all those social things is because I had my ID stolen twice last year, and was part of the Equifax data breach, I have to use Life Lock and all my credit is froze. I use a VPN and sometimes TOR. No I don't visit any web sites that end in .onion. So yes I am very conscience of my privacy.

    I don't see the point of Linux on a Chromebook. Who needs Libre office when you've got Google Docs? A lot of this looks like its just for the real computer geeks that don't have anything better to play with.
