- Replacing the rear upper control arms on my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This process is the the same for all Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1993-1998.

Quick tip: To keep from having your $15 socket fall down the chassis, invest in an extension that has a spring loaded locking pin instead of the ball on that chrome extension which isn't really for impact use anyway. In order to get the socket on and off the lock pin extension, you press the spring loaded pin in and put on the socket so the pin pops in the hole on the socket. It ain't coming off until you use a small torx screwdriver through the hole of the socket to push the pin in and pull the socket off. Saved me a bunch of money and frustration rather than trying to fish a popped off socket out of a blind hole in the frame rail or into a full bucket of antifreeze or dirty motor oil. Which sucks.

Paper towel or rag stuffed in frame below fastener keeps tools or parts in reach if they fall off.

Nice video, thanks - I ended up losing my socket into the chassis, but I was able to retrieve it with a magnet attached to a flexible wire.

Really good video, thanks. That looks like a really handy tip to put jackstands under the frame-rail and axle tube to minimize shifting, and necessitating PITA manipulation of things to get bolts lined up. Oh, and I love that Milwaukee impact driver! I'm going to have to step up and buy one of those. Thanks again. Cheers.

I wasted half a day trying to fish out that nut inside the frame once. Habor Freight magnets to the rescue. I had to jack up the front side of the vehicle and let gravity with taps of a rubber mallet to coax the nut aft, within reach of the magnet.

That was a great idea to reverse the installation of that front bolt, so as not to lose that 15mm nut!!

Dang took me 6 hours today and haven’t finished. I ended up changing the sway bar links, added 3/4” spaces and upper control arms. It’s some work. But thanks for the videos man. Next week I’m gonna try do the rear LCAs and then the fronts the week after.
Note that if you’re going to change your sway bar bushings, get a new sheet of the clamps cause mines were all rusty inside and I had to chip and grind the rust and ended up painting them.
*To make sure you dont lose a socket in a tight space Use Electrical tape to Wrap the socket to the extension so it doesnt come off*
I love watching/installing new parts on an older vehicle. Theres just somthing about that feeling. Lol or is it just me?
I picked up the 1/2" stubby impact kit and it’s awesome. Removes my Ram 2500 lug nuts no problem. I carry the kit in my truck along with a 12v charger and the m12 inflater w/ a 6ah battery for emergencies.
Hard Truth I mainly do suspension work and this stubby does about 70% of everything I throw at it. well worth the money which is why its the main impact wrench in most my videos

NJ winters suck too. Mine isn't terrible but a little worse than the one in this winter. I am also suspecting lifted jeeps do better, keeping them further away from the road junk.

Just a question the jack stands under the rear axle is that added safety ? I'm about to be doing all 8 control arms and sway bar bushings...
Can you do upper and lower at the same time?
Or should you do one then the other?
If you don't have another set of Jack stands for the axel, can you just use the lift? Or the stands you just removed to put under the axel and did you rest the axel down on the stands and then tighten the nuts??
The video went a little fast at that part and couldn't tell if you rested the axel on the stands?

Locking extensions are a thing pimp. Keeps your sockets from falling or flying off sometimes. Proto and Sunex sell an affordable version. Matco has them too if you want warranty.

iphone3gsdivine Im glad I can help people out and I love the tires and wheels. I bought the tire wheel combo from ebay and they came the next day mounted and balanced. they do good in snow and rain and I dont have nothing negative to say about them at all

I have the m18 1/2” mid torque and the m12 hex impact, 3/8 ratchet and drill, but the stubby looks to have lots of power in a small package.
Matty Tac it does have alot of power. I have the m18 high torque impact wrench but rately use it since I got the stubby 1/2 impact wrench.

Chitown express Its an all around better tool than the 3/8 M18. its lighter, stronger, and smaller enough to get in those areas where its hard to reach with an impact like the axle side nut I took off in this video. I havent had to use my high torque m18 impact wrench since ive got the stubby.

I only use a 6.0 battery. The only time I used the 4.0 battery was when i did the unboxing video for it. I have more footage of the tool in action on my facebook page "Ray Diggs"

Chitown express I cant honestly answer that because ive only used the 4.0 one time so I cant really make a fair comparison.
I ordered the 6.0 from ebay for around $50 to use specifically with the stubby impact tho
Is there no way to retrieve the socket that fell back into the front frame?
Do you have a small borescope camera that could perhaps locate it?

+ManicMechanic007 that first 15mm socket was apart of my 26 piece Grey Pneumatic socket set and I tried for about 30 minutes to get it back before I bit the bullet and ordered another one.
I dont have a borescope camera but its like a black hole down there. The 24 inch magnetic pick up tool was no help either

I use to be the guy struggling trying to remove a stubborn bolt with little to no room to leverage. Check offer up. People always sell brand new milwaukee tools for half the price
AWWW HELL I have to do this to my 97 & SHE BE A BIT RUSTY ? Yours looks like a new one compared to mine ? I live in PA. FREGGIN ROAD SALT, noticed 2 were rusted like yours while putting on my sway bar end links. The 4 control arms just showed up today, my ass went out there & drenched the bolts with KNOCK'ER LOOSE ONCE AGAIN. NICE VID. but I DON'T THINK MINE WILL BE THAT EASY ? ATTACKING IT TOM. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VID. AS ALWAYS B.G.OH HEY, I tape my sockets on when going inside the frame or when changing spark plugs, IT WORKS GREAT. I use electrical tape by the way. Also tape my extensions on when changing plugs, I hate it when you pull the plug out & everything stays with it.

Didn't get to it today, my code reader came in so I tried working on ABS since the light was on. Took me about an hour to download code reader updates on computer. Code reader ended up NOT RECOGNIZING MY JEEP ? Took along time trying different things but AT THE END OF THE DAY I GOT JACK ? Still don't know what's wrong, why ABS light IS on TIME WASTED, TAKING CODE READER BACK. Anybody know of a code reader scanner that works on JEEP ZJ'S ? It has to have ABS, THANKS. I have about $200 to spend on a scanner/ reader.
+nowr2run my abs light was on due to a missing wheel speed sensor in my '96 ZJ. I fixed it by taking the bulb out the instament panel...
I get away with using an XTool EZ400 Pro for most of my diagnostic work but on my older ZJ theres not many option.
