‘Simplifying Gardening’ did a good video on this. Placing the halos on top of the soil is meant for when grow bags only. If going on non-growbag soil (and therefore not protected by plastic sides to help keep in moisture) then tomato plants at risk of sending roots out under the halo so is better to bury it more than being suggested here. Trial and error but there is definitely a difference in what to do whether using halos with grow bags or not. Hope that helps! 😊

Oh....! Top tip.... cucumbers don’t like there base of the stem constantly wet. These things are FANTASTIC for cucumbers, they love it as it also brings up the humidity levels

one idea i just had is, after the 2 or 3 weeks of the plant getting rooted well, add some blood fish & bone to the reservoir so that seeps through into the root area aswell. and one more is, add the canes at the start so you not pushing them through healthy roots .

Hi Erica ... I got some ... mine are square .... hope I don’t grow square tomatoes 🍅😂
I had a little tip from a professional tomato grower he says ..... An issue when watering tomatoes around the stem base is that nutrients get washed away. One way to avoid this is to feed more regularly. We can give the same amount of feed by reducing the nutrient strength by half and feeding twice as often.
This avoids longer periods between feeds.
Another answer is to use grow pots or tomato halos when using grow bags. We water in the outer ring and FEED THE INNER RING around the stem base. This is where the plant has suckers that take up the feed more quickly 👍

Being a skinflint I just cut out big rings from old/broken plastic buckets and pots and use that around my tomatoes filled with compost/fertiliser. It lets me get good amounts of water to the roots each time I water without run off.
I quite like the in-built cane support holes though which my method doesn't have. I tend to just stick a cane in at one edge.
One tip I would say, regardless of whether using my budget method or a halo is to stick your canes in early because sticking them in when the plant has got big may damage the roots.
Oh, also another good tip if you need to go away for a few days and you don't have a fancy automatic watering system then I have found that a glass wine bottle full of water jammed in to the soil (so the end of the neck fills with dirt) is a good solution. The water will slowly wick out as the soil around the plant dries. Works best if growing in pots I think though.

I only came upon the actual existence of these today, in a local garden centre in Arbroath. I spent 3 GBP in B&Q, 10 seeds, only 2 germinated and produced plants. Bought 2 small cherry tomato plants, sliced and planted their fruit, now have *87* seedlings, cost 8 GBP and a bit of time, compost and watering. It's too many plants for me, but now I know I can get 45 plants or so for 4 GBP or 2 for 3 GBP. I know which way I am going in future :)

Hi Erica, many thanks for sharing, very interesting to hear how you are using your halos, they are definitely a plus for growing tomatoes, I first used them about 12 years ago,and they are in my opinion the best way to grow tomatoes. My take on them is that you fill the outer ring first, remembering that all the compost is already damp, and then don’t water for about 7 to 10 days, so the roots can go down and search for the water, hence creating a good root structure. The inner ring is for putting your liquid feed in to feed your toms once a week when your first trust is set, and twice a week when the other trusses are set. The feed roots are near the surface, and the outer ring is for rain water only for the tap/deep roots to water the plant not to feed the plant, this is only my opinion and not set in stone, and I’m sure that the way that you are going to use them will produce a bountiful and beautiful crop of tomatoes. I love the way we all have different ideas to reach the same goals, take good care kind regards

If the reservoir is buried, no posts are needed for trees or low veggies (squash). Also, to encourage roots to grow deep, put wicks in every hole down as deep as you can easily dig. Finally, cover the reservoir to stop evaporation. The plant will take only the water it needs. Trees protected with tubes, i.e., shields, filter out the UV, stimulate growth, keep predators out.

The water has gone straight into the grow bag tray & the grow bag is now sitting in water & has been like this for two days. Is this ok or should I remove the growbag tray & let the water drain out?

LOL, what a hassle. I just use 3 inch plastic pots dug in for 3/4, ballasted with some pebbles and water my plants in the subsoil. Less weeds, less water needed.Use them in my raised beds outside and in the grow bags in the GH. No need for canes to hold up the climbers in the GH either, just a hemp wire from the ceiling that I wrap around the stems as they grow. If they reach the ceiling I adjust the knot at the top and lower the bare stem sideways. I admit I'm a cheapskate. Best wishes, greetings from Holland.
