  • Ring culture is a method of cultivating tomato plants. Tomato plants are grown in a bottomless pot, a "ring", and the pot is partially submerged in a tray of water. It is perhaps best described as Two Zone Culture.

    Nice one Ray.
The way I have done this in the past is back to front to your way. I used deep gravel etc 6-12" deep and smaller pots. The tomatoes were watered in the gravel and fed in the compost. The gravel tray needs some sort of drain plug to allow the water to be changed and stop stagnation. I didn't really find any benefit with it but then again, I did not do a aside by side test of 2 similar toms in different growing pots.
There is a good article on the RHS website about Tomato ring culture.

That method of growing was around in the 1960's,, my father used that method for years in the greenhouse on a 6" deep bed of gravel,, water the gravel daily and feed the top of the pots every few days.
