Did you ever do that cucumber follow up episode? Cant seem to find it! Love your channel. My go to refresher every year to get me motivated for the season ahead! Good growing this year Tony!
I've followed this video for planting outside, dug halos in the ground ready for the tomatoes and peppers. Thank you for the advice, fingers crossed for happy growing this year! X
I’m a newbie to tomato plant growing and I’ve just stumbled across your channel whilst researching plant halos. Wow! You’ve just covered absolutely everything in this 1 upload instead of me having to dissect information from several other channels to get the clarity I’ve been after. Thank you for giving me the confidence to produce a good fruition this summer (pun intended!) Oh, you have a new sub too :-)
Hi Bina, Sorry for the late reply I have been quite busy. Welcome to the channel. Glad you decided to sub. Last friday I released a tomato tip video you might also wish to take a look at :)
Great video as per usual, cheers. My new polytunnel is only 3.5x2x2m standing on free draining gravel so I'm stuck with grow bags this year but have just got a batch of halo's so I'm hoping for some better results with cucs and toms over just using a grow bag. You sound like your not far from my location...keep the videos coming please.
This is a brilliant well informative video on growing tomatoes. I have my toms in these halo pots and grow bags in greenhouse and stupidly I have been watering then in both top and bottom holes. They seem ok though hopefully.
Not stupid to water in both holes, but by just using the ring for the water it drives the roots down for moisture and that way the plants fend better in hot weather less likely to dry out and split the toms when you water. by adding the feed to the top the roots there absorb it very quickly as they are all fine feeder roots
This is awesome! Your gonna get some awesome fruit with that set up! Them sunken Tomato Halos reminds me of what my grandad used to do. Small bucket in side a bigger bucket with holes in the bottom. Only difference is he used them for growing Giant Walking Stick Cabbages and Damson Trees Both bottoms cut out and he used to fill with moss and plant food. Then keep well watered,
1st Gardner your windows in your poly tunnel do you open then up every days just I have a green house were I have tomato, s growing I have been opening the door everyday but worried about if its gets cold it could harm the plants
Can I ask how often your meant to feed tomato plants that are around 6ft? which are in grow bags and grow pots and have some fruit but a lot of flowers. Not sure if I'm doing it correct.
Thank you very much. I'm just baffled as to why my tomatoes seem to be standing still and not growing. They have plenty flowers and the leaves are healthy but all of a sudden they seem to have stopped.
It could be down to the heat all the water they are taking is going to maintain the plants rather than growing due to evaporation when it cools they should go again
Tony Mag deficiency has nothing to do with blossom end rot! It is Calcium deficiency usually caused by irregular watering. Important that gardeners know this
Thanks for pointing that out. I meant calcium and dont know why i went on about magnesium thanks for pointing out my error and putting everyone right:)
when it comes to the aphids I plant basil, usually, but until its ready I have used marigolds. basil is a must for me because I love the smell when I brush past it. ( also good in my egg and tomato buttys for work)......................brian
Again Tony... Another great introduction to a good system aid... My egg plant is suffering in the Poly green house mate and I don't know why... I show it on last nights month end round up and its drooping and wilting...??

Interesting idea with the halo's. never seen them before. Would these work direct into an outdoor garden bed or raised bed in a small garden? Subbed your channel btw!
I can't believe this episode has only just cropped up in my feed. *Sort yourselves out, TH-cam!* I was let down by T&M, at the last minute, who informed me they couldn't deliver my tomato cages, so I've used the refund to purchase stainless steel reinforcing tracks. They look like tracks or ladders with widely spaced rungs, usually used in the building game to reinforce brickwork, as a much lighter alternative to rebar or to bridge across large cracks. Anyway, 2.7m long, 60mm wide, 3mm thick and flexible enough, using a cane, I figured, to create a half arch or a full arch with two held together with wire or garden twine. I'm thinking they'll give the climbing fruit and veg a stable structure, lifting the grub up off the soil, allowing sun and air to do their stuff. If I'd seen this vid, _(You listening, TH-cam?!)_ when you posted it, I'd have likely gone this route, but I'm committed to my 'ladders' now, though I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for uploading!
can a granular fertilizer be used or must it be a liquid fertilizer and add that to the water resivour also in the middle of the halo where the soil and plant is do i have to keep the soil wet ?
Hi Tony, just starting out with a new PT, I’ve made the raised beds, but at a loss as to what to fill it with, I’m growing tomatoes, someone said use rotted horse manure or mushroom compost, what do you use?
Hi Tony, great explanation, I used the tomato halos last year and they were really good. Good tip about drilling out the drainage holes as I did find they tended to get blocked. My tomatoes will get planted on in about a week I think. Take care. Nick
Hi, Beverley. Thanks for your comment. I am glad your new to the channel and welcome :) There is loads here but if you find you are looking for something and I have not done a video be sure to let me know. Im more than happy to film videos for my subs who need the help :)
Thanks for reminding me. I just went to the greenhouse and pinched out the side shoots on my tomatoes. Can you advise me if it's OK to put little white mushrooms, ( growing round an old tree stump) into my compost bin?
Steve the only reason they graft tomatoes onto a rootstock, Usually, one called Submarine. This is as the rootstock is more vigorous than the roots on the tomato. Unlike with trees, you could still plant the tomato deeper if roots from above the graft it won't matter as you would still have the benefit of the rootstock and the roots of whatever variety you have will both be taking nutrients to the tomatoes. With trees its different as the idea of rootstock there is usually to reduce tree height or slow growth and if you plant the graft into soil then this would root giving roots of the original tree which is likely to be more aggressive roots and therefore not be being a dwarf instead of a 10ft tree you could get a 40ft tree. Do you understand what I am trying to say here? Maybe I haven't explained it very well
I always thought tomato halos was a gimmick but after watching your clip and you explained the benefits of this I will be using some , thank you for sharing your wisdom
My father used to grow money maker and lemon boy yellow tomatoes in grow bags in the green house. Those shoots you picked off he told me where suckers. He also said there are male and female flowers on the plant is this true ? And if so which do you take off for a better crop. Thanks mate
Hi RIchard. Your father was right about the suckers, But wrong about the male and female flowers. Other plants have this but not tomoatoes. They contain both the male and female parts, so more than one plant is not needed for reproduction. The pollen falls within the flower to pollinate itself.
UK Here We Grow Thanks for putting me straight on that then. They're designed to sit on top of the soil so the "neck" of the plant doesn't get swamped. The small holes are also small so the water takes a while to drain out, which it will do even if "blocked" by soil/compost. I think we should avoid using one time plastics, this alone would sort out any issue we have with plastics, next we should only use plastics that can be fully recycled. these are also food grade so do not leech. i see no issue with using them if you can reuse them year after year, and they help increase yield or make watering easier. I dont grow all my tomatoes like this, they are especially good for cucumbers that rot off if you water around the stem. How much plastic is used in your car? do we stop using cars too? i see no issue as its long term. hope you see my point here, one time plastics need addressing though
I appreciate your answer and your arguments(And your point of view for cuncumbers, which seeme relevant to me) because few are good; Yes plastic all aroud us, probably too much ... we have to reduce "one time plastic" th'at definitively true ! however i'm not blow against plastics, but for my vegetable garden my point of view is: i prefer avoird all "non organic" thing aroud my vegetables, because y family eat them /"few year ago no one cared about some components in baby bottles, now BisphenolA ans phataltes a forbiden for this item " etc etc ... How does one send pictures to share on your site? My beds use the same 'physics' or 'hydraulics'' without plastic gizmos. Simple, works for all types of soil (clay to sands), one time double digging using a shovel, adding decomposed organic matter to the top and watching pH, rotating the crops religiously, adding correct amounts of fertilizer at the right times for the right soil for the right situation such as pots versus the garden. Pots always have sterilized potting soil. Most of my solanaceae and brassicas live in pots which really extends my garden real estate. One needs to learn what plants look like when they are deficient or they are in excess of the chemistry you didn't add or you did add. I do not use epsom salts, except on my horses. I don't use anything other than the basic NPK fertilizer. Dr. Earth 5-5-5 for the first half of the season and Growilla 2-5-4 later in the season. After the first fertilization when starts are up potted from 1" to 3" in potting soil and are on their 3 set of leaves, I don't fertilize until those plants start displaying signs of deficiency or even excess. I do not add fertilizer to healthy plants until I see the beginnings of chemical deficiencies. First thing I do is check pH. I want to KNOW what the chemistry of my soil IS before adding anything at all to the soil. I'd like to send you pictures is that possible?
Sigh, what is the main channel page and what is your community tab...argghhh. Hate to seem so dumb with computers. I'll keep working on this...sorry to be a bother!
@@stormytrails hi stormy click my icon it should take you to main channel page. This is where you see some play lists of my videos it has an about me page and so forth. There you will see the community tab under the banner. If not let ne know and when im home i can use pc to post a link for you
I have a comment to make to tony oneil HWG,those plastic things you say reduces the promotion of blight do exactly the opposite, they will promote blight because of the resavoir of water around each plant thus increasing the humidity and concentrating it on the plant, also un nessasarily using more PLASTIC!!.Please try to reduce the use of plastic in everything you do in your life,ta! ever so much,.paul
Paul, I see your point, However, I have good airflow right behind each plant as you can see from the windows, Humidity is unable to build up and by placing the water into the reservoir it does not splash up on the leaves, I have never had blight in my tunnel even when all those around me were wiped out. As for plastic, yes we need to reduce plastic in our world, But I believe that long-term use plastics are ok. Its one time use plastics that are really causing an issue. Something you will use for years on end isn't what's causing the problem, I also ensure that the plastic I use can be recycled after I finish using it. If we were to get rid of all plastics we would be back to the stone age, No transport, for example, cars trucks planes and trains are around 30% plastic do we stop driving too? Plastics have a place in society but the issue with this world is folks go mad, and instead of managing things like one time use plastics they jump on every sort of plastic there is without a thought. that being said I totally agree with you that plastic uses need to be reduced by everyone

I want to KNOW what the chemistry of my soil IS before adding anything at all to the soil. I'd like to send you pictures is that possible?
