Thanks for another great adventure and rod test! One situation that recommends a stiffer short rod: heavy overhead vegetation, such as laurel and rhododendron “tunnels” here in the East. Too soft a rod requires too much “rod travel” to get a hook set. Grateful as ever for the miles you log and editing time you put in to bring us these videos - thank you again!
We enjoy both of your channels and have started Tenkara fishing here in the Blue Ridge area after being introduced to it by you. Our 4 year old grandson requests to watch you fish instead of Curious George....all we hear now is "fish on" and "see you buddy". I have ordered his first Tenkara rod...he had been spin fishing for trout at his local creek....thanks for the videos!
I have the Tiny Ten 2, and I find it a great backpacking rod. Last fished with it in Boulder Creek and Caught lovely brook trout and a rainbow trout. Good quality rod with replacement parts available. I also fished the Aventik in Colorado and found that a good rod as well, especially when trying to get rods to fit in luggage. Your videos are awesome! Steve
I just bought this 6 foot goture extended rod, for 17.00 dollars. It has decent reviews and I am getting it on tuesday! I need a replacement rod until my new one comes. Tristan can you do a quick tutorial on rod issues, like the rod won't close and ways to get the rod to collapse?
Do you mind me asking what you are using for waders? Those look like they would pack well for hiking. Found this video while looking for a review on the Aventik Zeno, pleasantly surprised this in on the Tiny Ten 2. I bought a Tiny Ten 2 in 2020 or 2019. I love it, but it's a little stiff for me as I usually fish with short soft/slow flyrods. I became interested in tenkara rods for something that packs well for hiking trips.
Great video flick as always. As per brook trout, they are not trout and of the char family such as dolly varden, lake trout i.e mackinaw, et. al. They are much more aggressive and as you said will eat other trout out of house and home. The good of that is they are a very delicious fish, even the little 4 inchers. Gutted and pegged on a stick over an open fire or pan fried they make a great back country shore lunch. (A Firebox stick burner works great for the open fire. A Coleman 533 or Svea 123 with a small 6" Lodge cast iron pan when open fires are prohibited) I wouldn't feel bad harvesting and eating them where legal because as you say they are non native and often planted. Native cutty's and rainbows on the other hand always get released gently. They are too valuable a fish to be caught only once. As per that rod....SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!! Mahalo senor!
You have inspired me to again try Tenkara rod. I’ve been fly fishing for several years and tried Tenkara a couple of years ago. I was going to say after catching 16 trout in an hour and half...maybe every rod would feel good? Haha. :-). But Tenkara seems perfect for the small, freestone creeks. A little less interesting in the streams I have been primarily fishing here in the Midwest. I’m not sure, but I’ll give it a try again. Thanks for your videos!
Thanks for sharing the test of the rod. I was interested in what shoes and waders you use for streams like this. I'm in the southeast and have similar streams, but very dense laurel and rhododendron tunnel as mentioned in the below post. Thanks
FYI...I do enjoy the different spieces of course. And rods! I'm only one viewer and I view both your channels for the scenery of locations. Areas to visit and fish. My Objective is to be enjoying the Natural World with a Goal of catching a fish. Fishing and hiking are activities I do outdoors. I use to be an enthusiastic MTB but stopped when I was about 60. Closer to 70 now and completely enjoy the slower pace. I don't even carry camera any longer. I simply focus on being Present. Like I said, I'm just one viewer. Many are focused on the catching and that's absolutely fine too! Just get out....😁
I just bought this rod and live here in NW Montana and man i am impressed caught a 16” cuttie and the rod survived 😂. i absolutely love your videos man keep them coming please. passes the time when i can’t be in the mountains. look forward to more content. would love to link up with you and catch some beautiful fish
Great stream! I think I know this one as its on my to do list. I haven't been up to the head waters yet but found the lower levels were lacking in fish. Glad to hear there is fish up high.
Good video. It sounds like this little rod would be a good one to supplement my Dragontail 465??? If so, where is a good place to find one for sale? (Didn't find it on EBay)
Another nice vid, Tristan. I began usin longer tenkara rods back in 2009 but it didn't take long to realize that i much preffer the shorter ones even when fishing more open areas . I have a TAO (former Badger Tenkara) U.N.C 8 1/2ft that is my favorite go everyehre nowadays. If you have the chance tou should try it.
I just bought that rod recently and I tried using furled line in stead of the line that came with it, I was wondering what would be the best line to use. Thanks and love your vids BTW.
I would also use a size 14-16 elk hair caddis dry fly. Or, a orange kebari fly and any sort of high visibility dry fly! like a royal coachmen. I have been doing great with those types of flies.
New to your channel and have been loving it. You got me sold on a dragontail tenkara. What kind of waders are you using and what do you look for? Stocking foot or boot and so forth. Thanks for the killer content. Tight lines!
Also new, loving tenkara but haven't caught a fish yet. Also interested in which waders. Yesterday's chill here in Cuchara was cold wading in cross, lol. Great job on the content!
These are the Chota Hippies. They're stocking foot hip waders. They're great, though they'll start leaking after a year or two. I also have chest waders for colder and deeper waters.
My 2 cents: Ankle-high wool socks, trail runners (like the Salomon Speedcross) and shorts. Of course I don't wade when it's cold, but even fishing cold mountain streams like the one in this video your feet will go numb quickly and warm up just as quick when you get out. I don't mess with waders anymore, Tenkara fishing is about light and fast.
How do you feel about western fly fishing? Have you tried it? I’m a beginner fly fisherman but would love to get a tenkara rod some time- just a pain to get shipped to Sweden.
One of the best fly shops in the world is in Malmö, Sweden. Fly Fishing Masters. There’s also a great Tenkara guide in Trysil, Norway. Find him on the Tenkara USA site. I’ve been to the Malmö shop a few times and even ordered online and shipped to Denmark.
@@LearnTheLandScandinavia no Tenkara gear there. But Bears Den has, I checked last night. Also can buy from Tenkara USA site, I had them once shipped to Denmark.
Lucas, Dragontail is very fast, I order from them all the time. One week to Germany maybe two if the custom people are lazy. And great rods, lines and everything else you could possibly need.
Too bad this came out after I bought the tiny ten. I do think the ten 2 would have been better. What is a rod in the 6 to 7 ft length would you recommend. I’ve been binge watching all your videos.

Yep, that makes sense. Thanks for watching, Michael!
I tend to agree with that as I have left way more flies in the trees than in the stream LOL Cheers!!!!
Pls make a royale coachman dry fly for tenkara please 🥺
Strange that Brook Trout have done so well in the west, but have not done so well in a lot of their native range.
They are pretty happy on the east coast of Canada. Caveat: except for the lakes and rivers where fools have introduced bass and chain pickerel.
@@ianwhitehead3086 You have to climb high in the mountains in a lot of eastern States to find the natives.
Yeah, it's odd 🤷♂
😂🤣 Chunky McChunk Face 😂🤣 too funny Tristan!

I've been thinking about the tiny ten 2 for a motorcycle rod
Looks like familiar Sierra streams that I normally fish with 6 to 8 ft rods in 2 and 3 wt.
what a picturesque area. thanks Tristan.
Nice little creek and shorter rod. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! The tiny ten 2 is what I use and am quite happy with it as a beginner! Super fun!
Butterbushcraft Where did you find your Tiny ten 2? I haven't found one
@@gilmeacham8109 I got mine at waypoint outfitters Boone but they seem to be put of stock at the moment
This will be my first Tenkara? Is it versatile?
What would you say it's good for and what are the limitations?

Nice video) What time of year did you fish there and at what time of day (morning, afternoon)?
I have this rod and I catch 2lbs smallmouth bass on it. Definitely pushing it lol but it’s a blast! Target some 14/15inchers on it!

Take some credit, Tristan. You are a really good fisherman. And videographer. Thanks for sharing.
Do you think the aventik im12 nano is as good or better than this rod? It's almost half the price and you have it a positive review also

I've got to get back to the lower stream one of these days. There aren't necessarily a ton of fish there, but I know there are big fish there.
What waders were those?

Just another amazing fishing video. I love it.
I’m going on a trip to the Tetons in a few weeks and wanted to know what flies should I use?
I just fish whatever I feel like fishing. Creek fish aren't too bothered by any fly.
