    I get asked often what do I consider to be the my best "RV hack" which I have done to the coach. That would have to be the "Auto On" of the Aqua-Hot burner, but only when taking a shower! This is not hard, but does require you to CUT the water line. As such, leeks can happen. You also need to be sure to adjust the switch so it turns on even with a slow flow as the hot water in the shower is usually not used at a high flow rate. Don't attempt unless you understand what is involved and how it works!
    The idea here is we know we will need more hot water than the electric can provide for showers, so this will be sure the burner is ON and thus we do not run out. For it is was OFF, the diesel burner will not fire and we will run out of hot water quickly as electric can't cut it with the delta swing needed. Even in cooler weather, like it has been here in TX, if the burner is on, we will hear it fire up now and again even though you would think the electric would be able to keep up. As soon as you use any hot water, that is that and it will fire the burner when it really does not need to. Hope this makes sense as why we love this hack we came up with.

      The electric hearting part is just fine for sink use. It is the longer needs, like a shower, that there are not enough BTU's from the electric element to keep up.

      LOL..That was a good Jeffery. Not sure actually...but it we had done it enough when one of us was not home to want to look for a solution. Of course ours is a 2014, in 2015 they put a burner switch in the bath if I recall. So not as bad. But even with that, I like my solution better. :)

  • @Big.Ron1

    I will have to remember this for my new to me coach when I get it. You said you have a switch in the bathroom to defeat this function. 2 questions. Why would you need to defeat it? And is it just an inline on/off switch in one of the two wires? Thank you.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi...Yes, it is just an inline switch to defeat it so the loop is cut. As to the reason. In the summer the ground water temp can go up quite a bit, so the delta swing needed to heat the water is not as high. (Lower BTU's) So the electric heating part of the Aqua-Hot is able to do enough for us for hot/warm showers in the summer. As such, no reason to burn the fuel.

    • @Big.Ron1
      @Big.Ron1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Bott I hadn't considered that. It is true here in Phoenix that in summer the cold water is warm. But in winter it's cold. They don't bury the water lines very deep in the subdivisions as usually it doesn't hard freeze. So the water coming into the houses gets a large temperature swing throughout the year. Thank you.

  • @Tothefloor
    @Tothefloor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did you get the wires from the flow switch down to the Aqua Hot control board? I wish you were more detailed on how exactly you install your mods. All the details not just the "look what I did" but this is HOW I did it. Thanks David.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi...I do not get into the details as it would not be the same for most of the RV's or coaches. Even the same models within the same model year can have differences as they changed something on the line along the way. (I have found wire color difference from coaches made 3 weeks apart! If I documented it and it involved me saying to use the blue wire when now it is red, that could be really big issue.) So to take the time to document, shoot and edit video when it would not be useable for most of the viewers, just does not make sense to me time wise. So I give the info (Aka... IDEA) and then the person can take it from there.
      So in this case it was all there...Get this part that fits for you need, find the right water line, put it in-line, run the wire to the board to these pins. Thats more or less it. :) I did NOT get into the pins etc for what if they are not using the same model unit or it is a different board? Anyone looking to do something like this I would HOPE would look up the install manual for the unit so they know the connections they are looking for. It would not be good, nor would I feel good, if someone did something bad to their RV/Coach based on how I said to install something only because of a change or difference I could not be aware of.
      For me, in this case, I got really lucky as the hot water line I needed was right there in the same bay I needed to run the wire!!! So I needed just about 3 or 4 feet of wire to go from the switch to the pins 1 and 2. I hope the reason as to why I do not document it fully makes sense. It takes hours of time just to make these little videos. (We do not do this for a living.)

    • @Tothefloor
      @Tothefloor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense David. I'm glad the hot water line for the shower was also in the same bay as the aqua hot in your coach. I could see how this mod would be harder to achieve if the hot water line for the shower was further away and possibly on the other side of the floor et. Thanks again for posting this video!

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually not really. As the water line are usually right there running through the cargo bays and the Aqua-Hot is there also. So running a wire would not really be an issue. (For most.)

    • @Tothefloor
      @Tothefloor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just thought the hot line would be T'd off at a location above the floor. I didn't know there was a dedicated hot line that just went to the shower in most Tiffins using Aqua hot. I guess I will find out in 3 weeks. ;) 40IH on the way. Thanks for the info D.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well we certainly got to see his ornery side.. lol 😂 what a nut 🤣🤣🤣🤣 does aqua hot take care of ur floors heat as well is that why u keep the Electric on all the time??

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No...The Aqua-Hot is only used for hot water and main heat. The floors are done via electric. You leave the electric on all the time for the Aqua-Hot so you have hot water and/or heat. Though it is limited based on the BTU's electric can produce.

  • @windycityl
    @windycityl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    All you have to do is add a switch to that one. To where you want it to go. Just a switch would be all needed nothing else. I've done that with lights speakers just have to figure out how to do all that is all.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huh? I did add a switch. It just happens to be automatic. :) Running wire for another switch all the way into the bathroom with have been harder actually. No thanks....I would rather have it fully automated like we do. After all, I still know I would forget the switch and need to get out of the shower turn it on after I am wet. You see, you would not remember it until after the water started to get cold. Then when you turn it on, you need to wait for it to again get hot as you had already exhausted the BTUs in the boiler.

    Can you turn on the diesel burner other than when using the shower... ie, are your 2 'contact' switches in parallel?

    • @Tothefloor
      @Tothefloor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can turn it on whenever as you see in one of the shots of me putting the switch ON. However, it is the always ON. As such, when you run hot water, say for washing dishes, it will use what it can from the boiler from the electric, however when it needs more it, which it will, it will fire the burner and use fuel. The idea here is we know we will need more hot water than the electric can provide for showers, so this will be sure it is on and thus we do not run out. For it is was OFF, the diesel burner will not fire and we will run out of hot water quickly. Even in cooler weather, like it has been here in TX, if the burner is on, we will hear it fire up now and again even though you would think the electric would be able to keep up...but as soon as you use any hot water, that is that and it will fire the burner when it really does not need to. Hope this makes sense.

    • @meteor109
      @meteor109 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, sorry. I didn't fully understand your reply. eg, you said: "As such, when you run hot water, say for washing dishes, it will use what it can from the boiler from the electric, however when it needs more it, which it will, it will fire the burner and use fuel." If the AH works like this for the dish washer, why not rely on the same strategy to keep the water hot in the shower?

      higg1966 Then he could just leave the gas switch on all the time. I’m not sure you understand how the system works.

    • @higg1966
      @higg1966 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not understand how the system works; that is why I'm asking. It seems like it would be cool if the flow switch could work for the kitchen as well.

    • @DavidBott
      @DavidBott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the rest, like the sinks, the electric can keep up with hot water needs without issue for the amount of waster needed. But you see, as soon as the Aqua-Hot sees a drop, if the burner is ON, it would fire the burner to get temp back up even if I am done with the water at the sink.
