Literally bought this for £5 at CEX like a week ago. As an adult with not enough time and energy for too many long sessions of gaming, this is a perfect game.
The missions can be as short or as long as I want them to be, and I can go back again and replay them from different angles, do challenges etc.
I don’t care that it lacks story content or can technically be speed ran in 10 minutes - all I care about is that it’s a perfect Big Boss simulator and each playthrough slaps pretty damn hard on the occasions that I choose to play it.

I take consolation knowing that we already knew the story between Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1 and 2 for the most part, aside from certain retcons and twists, so at the very least the story for the series overall is complete.
I see MGSV as more of a ‘Big Boss Simulator’ rather than the latest odyssey of Naked Snake. In other words, I appreciate it for what it excels in - which is the gameplay, as it really makes you feel like Big Boss.

I think what kinda makes GZ more effective is how you’re limited to the map and can’t outrun the enemy when caught, which adds more tension when sneaking.
Whereas in TPP the map is so open that you can run away and circle around to pick off enemies who are still looking at where you were. It allows for more of a guerrilla warfare tactic.

Amazing video! As big a fan of MGS over here, you nailed this short analysis. We've easily gotten tens, possibly even a hundred+ hours out of GZ. Yeah, it's a tight map, and the campaign is short. But as you say, there's plenty of secrets, challenges, and content to explore. And once we did all that, we just started making our own challenges. Trying to find the most efficient ways to tackle the missions. It's almost like they found an effective way to condense MGS/ MGS2 campaign AND VR missions all into one tight little package. Yeah, in those earlier titles there's more missions, but you wind up doing the same things repetitively over a handful of different in-game environments. GZ gives you a handful of missions, one map, sure, but tons of different things to do and explore. And, unlike MGS/MGS2, it's sandbox design makes it feel more open ended. This is another one for the MGS franchise that we'll return to probably indefinitely.

Big open map with some dangerous animals/hunting, fast flowing rivers sweep you away, cliffs to scale, cold causes issues. You can set up a campfire but in enemy territory enemies are alerted to your presence.
Give us the tactical approach options of MGS with anti aircraft missiles and communications that can be disabled. Force us to fast travel from evac sites only, but if you escape while detected they send search parties etc to reward stealth and add challenge.

a not to mention that it has slightly better graphics than phantom pain, there was a page on nvidia site explaining the technology behind it, and some youtubers covered that some featured had to be removed from phantom pain due to be more heavier in the full open world

“Ground Zeroes could be completed in a few hours.” Gaming Bolt.
What?! 🙄 That only real story mission could be completed in 15-20 mins playing it. Speed runs could do it in a few mins. Great demo and yes it had a few different missions of nonsense but not a real story.

In 2012 I got my first real job and bought myself a PSP with MGS PW.
Played it for countless hours on my commute. 100% completed the game, twice. No doubt I was heavily invested my base, the MSF. I was hoping somehow I could carry forward my staff to Ground Zeroes.
And then, the ending of GZ happened, I was devastated.

MGSV TPP is the best game ever made hands down. Forget the controversial story issues, in terms of gameplay, it has no competition to this day. Ground Zeroes is basically a rough demo of the masterpiece that is TPP, but given the brilliance of the final product, GZ is exceptionally good too.

MG or MGS is my all time favourite series. Absolute brilliance and every game was ahead of its time. I highly recommend playing Peace Walker prior to playing Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. It connects MGS Snake eater to them.

I miss MGS games being a self contained single mission experience like MGS. Phantom Pain was amazing of course, but I guess its because MGS1 was my first game and really wanted to follow the story of a single mission. MGS 3 Snake eater was amazing in that regard because it was predominantly a single mission (the first part was tutorial)

I know this is a LOT of young gamers - mostly console kids now grown - holy grail. As a PC gamer I remember when the Playstation was created. I watched as games changed for that format, enter the collectables and achievements which substituted for content due to system limitations. As the console gained power, instead of dropping these place holder concepts they doubled down while using cinematic cut-scenes more and more. When this finally released for PC, like other SONY games that are the 2nd coming, I hoped for the best. I don't know about others, but I was chomping at the bit to PLAY a game instead of occasionally interacting with some virtual movie for the first 45 minutes. Everything I experienced was a mash up of other stuff I already experienced 10 years before, but not with the 'Hollywood' treatment. This was THE Sony game which convinced me to temper my expectations when the only information comes from the Sony fanbase.
