It's true that the there's about 2 hours of main story/gameplay here and anyone that isn't a big fan and just plays MGS games mainly for the story. However, there is so much more in this package for anyone who sticks around and explores, finding the unlockables, secrets, easter eggs and references to of Kojima's inspirations for the MGS series. I put 38 hours into Ground Zeroes and unlocked everything 100%. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Played on the PS3 and the visuals were amazing. Looks even better on PS4, and I'd say still looks great by today's standards, both technically and artistically. Side note, I pre-ordered this game in Canada and remember it being $29.99 CAD, which is about $20-25 USD. Not sure if pricing may have been different in other regions. Hopefully you don't rush through MGS V Phantom Pain and just enjoy it at your own natural pace. Looking forward to that analysis.
this was the prelude to mgs5 imagine this being the tanker mission on steroids mgs5 is the real open world but with ground zeros you get aloooooooooot for one level
i liked big bosses voice change though thematically it made sense since it’s not the real big boss and he’s more rugged and somber in this game so i think the voice fits
Im done! Watching all of the metal gear Videos in a bit more than a week. Man that was a great journey and some kind of very great content! Thanks alot of showing the not so popular metal gear games too.
Aw darn, you left out the alternate modes in this one. Like playing as MGR Raiden against body snatchers, or playing as MGS1 Solid Snake in all of his polygonal glory in a trip to the past.
Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss was so jarring to me and I could never get used to it. Once you get to the very end of Phantom Pain, I kinda feel like it works
I think there's a more important reason for Kojima to chose Kiefer instead of David for voicing Big Boss and that's the fact that Ground Zeroes is some kind of "training" (that's more accurately a brainwashing haha) for the medic who'd later become Venom Snake. I mean, the change in voice actor was not only because of the reason you mentioned, but also because of this narrative twist that can be identified just by paying attention to what happened at the end of Peace Walker (Paz being known as a spy by Kaz) and later events presented in Ground Zeroes.
Fun fact: In Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain if you hit a guard in Reflex Mode with an empty magazine to the face it will always KO them. This only works in reflex mode and is hilarious and a gigachad flex way to play the game by mag KOing every guard.
I personally understand a reason why David Hayter was replaced, I don’t want to spoil why in this videos comment section, but it did make sense to me. And no, not because of some sort of beef between Kojima and hayter. But I’ll explain in your next video in this series. I will add that, I too, missed Hayters voice here as well I will add though, things you do extra in Ground Zeroes can effect Phantom Pain for the better. Extracting prisoners here will flesh out your army in Phantom Pain as well as other perks
@@909_raised well I could be getting this wrong, and forgive me if I am. But this my understanding: So I had heard somewhere that Kojima wasn’t digging David Heyters performance in the 1st MGS. And was head hunting a Hollywood actor to voice Snake. However, despite what he wanted, the fans loved Snakes voice so much so that Kojima basically said “Eff it” and got him to reprise the role… EVERY SINGLE TIME. Which I think is great, but I bet to Kojima and to some is probably “over acted”. (Which, Who cares right? It’s a video game). So finally at this point Kojima gets his wish and gets Sutherland, which would leave an obvious sore spot with Heyter, but again, I won’t say why I believe it was necessary here, but it does make sense, to me at least. Although, like I said earlier, I did miss Heyter as Snake in the conclusion of this series
@@Metal-Josh Hayter wasnt just given the role every time. He had to re-audition for Big Boss in MGS3 & PW and for Old Snake in MGS4. I personally agree that he did overdo the voice for some of the games. His performance was especially bad in Peace Walker
You're almost there Chole! This was such a great review series! I played the hell of GZ and TPP on my PS3 lol. The stealth was so so good, gameplay didn't disappoint. still think those 2 games were the beginning of the end for Kojima as ultimately TPP did nothing good outside of the gameplay
I have this exact same sentiment....I was willing to give him a pass due to all the drama, turmoil and behind the scenes issues when making the game. I thought Death Stranding really underwhelmed and was not a game for me. I went in with no expectations and wasn't even expecting a MGS knock off or even a stealth game. I was happy to see him create something that he had passion for as it seemed like he has been wanting to leave Metal Gear for years. The game just wasn't for me, and it made me feel his best days were behind him. He will forever be an all time great and a superb creative influence on an entire generation, I don't think he's been able to hit on both elements of gameplay and story, at the same time since MGS3 and maybe mgs4. MGS5's gameplay was AMAZING, but outside of that it didn't feel like a metal gear. Death Stranding's story was interesting until it wasn't, but it didn't make for a very fun game to PLAY. It would have been better suited for another entertainment medium such as a movie, or TV series or something else entirely.
Ground Zeroes is kind of my first Metal Gear, and at the time it was free on PS+ leading up to Phantom Pain's release, so I went in thinking it was just a massive demo for MGS V, and thought the amount of content was incredible from that perspective, I then found out that it had been released and marketed as a stand-alone product at a $40 price point and yeah, I felt bad for anyone who was sold that lie. It went from in my mind the greatest demo ever released to something far more dubious, which is a shame, because what's here is great. And going back and playing the fan-service side-op after playing the rest of the series was a highlight.
Im also playing through all mgs games for the first time now. Just got to GZ yesterday. Took me 11 hours to beat main mission a couple of times and get every unlockable for mgsv. Now I will try very hard to forget every spoiler that I saw about that game 😅 Hope its as goos as ground zeroes. My only issues with gz is locked fps. While you can unlock it, throwables will freeze in air instead of flying with fps higher than 60. And it's a damn shame, gz looks and plays absolutely gorgeous at 170hz
3:50 "both actors do a grate job" ... i'm sure many people, me as well, disagree, as while i could completely understand this change for other games, doe to the actor change and obviously script writing and stuff, it feels like it's not the big boss we know, and that's rly annoying ... not to mention that he hardly has any lines in the games he is in.
I remember it was marketed as a demo. But as a fan of MGS we will chew on anything MGS.... It was really a good game as i got like almost 15 - 20hrs out of the demo.
This game is a phyop for venom snake. Because at the end of peace walker big boss was told information by miller that made him not like him anymore. The knowledge of pax being a tripe agent. So in the phyop miller does not know that infor, thus the lie began in ground zero.
I could not do every trial but I did S rank every mission. But I did unlock everything and platinum 100%. Before getting more than ten missions in on mgs5 full game.
I'm glad you finally made to MGSV but I'm surprised you didn't review Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel on PSP 🤔 It's one of the very few games i haven't played from beginning to end. Only because i was the Blu-ray version with English voice acting. But regardless it's still technically a game and i would like to hear your thoughts on the new story elements they added. Also, you recruit Kojima In Peace Walker too. Theres even a trophy for it in the HD version haha. I'm surprised you didn't talk about the extra ops missions "Déjà vu" and "Jamais Vu". I noticed you were playing the PC version so I'm not sure if those missions are available on PC or not. They were originally console exclusive like the PS3/PS4 had Déjà Vu and Xbox 360/Xbox one had Jamais Vu but eventually they release a patch to have both missions on both console. Again not sure about the PC version. "Sample text"... Twice 🤣 that was funny 🤣
Hmmm well. I’ll agree the tranq gun is OP. It needed suppressor system to balance out a bit I believe. And the game is short asf. But I’d argue that on release iirc it was 40$ game opposed to 60$, I was upset it was over so fast, but at the same time I racked up to at least 9-10hrs in it overall. Doing everything and playing around in it experimenting having fun and I did have fun so in long run I looked past the 40. Heck I paid 60 for way worse games…. The reflex system I found was a good balance, it would give u that little wiggle if needed, don’t know how many times would map some plan out and the slightest little hitch ruins the whole run, so the reflex was a good “hey you fudged up, but u get this shot to fix urself back on track.” And yea it could be broken by people, but again that’s something I feel plays into the strength, if some speed runner or such uses it to there advantage for whatever reason hey more power to them I say. And I’m mixed on your max explaining the puzzle thing, like I didn’t think of it at all til u mentioned it, and it makes sense your right. But I also felt it was organic cause we’ll max is in your ear for these missions, I imagine in a rea mission that yea they’d be bouncing ideas and going through the motions like that together so it never felt like was being explained the puzzle, but that like a friend was helping think it through on the spot….. but I really see your angle now you bring it up though cause thinking back on past games yea they didn’t hand hold that much, they say to call if need help so you figure it out yourself, or if took waaaaayyyyy to long the game would find a way to work around your incompetence to get through (not finding Meryl codec on the real game case comes to mind I’m pretty sure that cargo door eventually opens itself after awhile haha.) otherwise good take on this game, I still enjoyed and liked it but I get the criticisms. Will say the phantom pain coming I’m real torn on, fun game to play, but idk just didn’t retain that metal gear charm throughout a whole game and eventual feels like a openworld game where u just select a mission from a list and go do it however u like or can. It starts off with heavy metal gear feels, then once reach the game itself it felt the metal gear aspect took a backseat so it’s no where near my top fav metal gear games, great game to play, but not a metal gear like game for me.
the only one i never played lol. i was amazed by the original trailer, but at that time (might of been e3) , i thought and it was slightly implied it was just a demo, a short MGS side thing. so i never bothered because i no longer had my ps3 . Lost in that shift from ps3 to ps4.
GZ should've never been sold separately. It was the tutorial for TPP. Gets you used to the new controls and feel of the next generation of MGS then it should launch you into TPP. Understand that they wanted to make some of their investment back cause TPP was a ways away but still... should've let Kojima finish his vision and then let him go properly
For the ending they are going for, I don't mind snake voiced by others. It just too bad how Kojima handle it. Should have informed hayter and pay him to be silent.

Please play both the "daja vu" and "jamis vu" missions. They're like a full third of the game. Plus listen to the extra tapes on TH-cam. Skullface comes off as so boring in TPP without them.
For about half the things you were saying you don't like I kept thinking: This is peak MSF... This is peak MSF.... You're supposed to be OP storywise. Also, the prologue to a whole other game.
compare to the previous Metal Gears, this one and the Phantom Pain have gone a lot darker. Unlike black ops series, US Marines here are a bunch of savage militia. Both US and Soviet were just using conflicts in smaller countries to benefit their own scheme
lmao, you're consider ?. you're speaking like people viewed the opposite, and as if kojima didn't made gz as tpp prologue? what you're saying is the same as "i consider spider-man 2 is the prequel for spider-man 3" no shit, sherlock.
Personally when I recommend mgsV to people I would typically tell them to buy the definitive edition which has both ground zero and the phantom pain stitched together into one complete game
The problem with GZ and where all the animosity came from is that it was expected to be the next big game and at full price you basically got a demo for TPP. It does have a lot more content than you expect if you play through all the extra missions but can feel repetitive. Even by today’s standards it looks and plays better than 95% of games out there. This was the start of the end for the kojima/konami relationship also. This is why TPP is so fractured and unfinished. I’m not a fan of the mission based structure in GZ/TPP which started in Portable Ops/Peace Walker but if they ever do a rerelease/remaster it would be nice if they managed to put in the unfinished missions.
10:57 We’re making a video, can’t fret over every sample text

Although, im not sure if they did it for acessibility, because phantom pain has MASSIVE issues with its subtitles, i would even consider them to be the worst subtitles in a AAA game.
The funny thing is both survive and phantom pain basically use the main mission of this game as their prologue
Congratulations on your fantastic videos for Metal Gear. After Metal Gear Survive, I'd love to see you do a final video of the franchise, what stuck out to you, favorite characters, a final ranking of the games now that you've completed it, and what you'd like to see out of Delta, after playing everything. All the best to you!
I actually have an idea written down that's somewhat similar to that! Though it would be a while before I got to it... 👀
@@notcole totally get that. These videos take time and effort. Keep up the good work!
All of the bonus missions are very reminiscent of the VR missions, something I desperately want more of. I got nearly 40 hours out of Ground Zeroes. I love the game.
Chole, I am so ready for a three hour video on your first time review of MGSV TPP. I both hate and love that game so much.
And to think we are nearing the end, is a real sad one. This is good, sn't it?
It's been...nine (or ten) years.
10 years later, that stomach bomb scene is still incredibly disturbing to watch... Just for the gut punch that there was a second bomb in her lady parts.
No mention of the the special missions in the game? One has you playing with a PS1 version of Snake and another as cyborg Raiden sans the sword.
this was the prelude to mgs5 imagine this being the tanker mission on steroids mgs5 is the real open world but with ground zeros you get aloooooooooot for one level
Can’t wait for the MGS Phantom Pain deep dive. Binged 1-4 in 48 hours, love the videos bro!
i liked big bosses voice change though thematically it made sense since it’s not the real big boss and he’s more rugged and somber in this game so i think the voice fits
I thought the thumbnail was a joke...then i realized it actually has been 10 years...damn.
I will add that, I too, missed Hayters voice here as well
I will add though, things you do extra in Ground Zeroes can effect Phantom Pain for the better. Extracting prisoners here will flesh out your army in Phantom Pain as well as other perks
@@Metal-Josh plz my dear good sir explain at least to me what had happened between hayter and mgsvtpp?
@@909_raised well I could be getting this wrong, and forgive me if I am. But this my understanding:
So I had heard somewhere that Kojima wasn’t digging David Heyters performance in the 1st MGS.
@@Metal-Josh ty bro so much, i am sorry for the late reply 💀
so about the mgs 5 tpp video. Should i expect to be around 3 to 5 months from now?
Was wondering whether you'd do Ground Zeroes on its own or as a package with Phantom Pain.
Camp Omega ---> all phantom pain maps.
It's fun and gorgeous. It is not a full game though. It is a demo.
It's mgs2 tanker chapter. Play as real snake then get duped into another character next chapter
Over the years I’ve found that if you got a problem with what Kojima did then you’re missing the point of why he did it.
It's a shame this series is coming to an end 💔 it's so lovely
Here's to you
This is the ground zero for the phantom pain that sets in.
Now I will try very hard to forget every spoiler that I saw about that game 😅
Hope its as goos as ground zeroes. My only issues with gz is locked fps. While you can unlock it, throwables will freeze in air instead of flying with fps higher than 60.
And it's a damn shame, gz looks and plays absolutely gorgeous at 170hz
the problem is it was basically just a beta. 15 years earlier it would have been released as a free demo
Is the demo free yet? 😭
I remember being absolutely hyped for this game. As a demo it was pretty decent. Price was way too high though.
Anyone who didn't get emotional listening to Paz's diary tapes has no soul.
Did you get to play as Raiden at all?
Paying for a demo was crazy, i skipped it until just before MgsV cane out and got it for a fiver
The "side missions" are main story. Its dumb but it has a narrative and the "first mission" is actually the last mission.
Great to see thos video come out on my birthday. V is my favorite game ever and ground zeroes is really fun even if theres not that much to it.
For the ending they are going for, I don't mind snake voiced by others. It just too bad how Kojima handle it. Should have informed hayter and pay him to be silent.
I see we're not gonna summarize the story of the tapes huh? (I don't blame you lol)
doing this stuff in reality would be very difficult, though
I can’t wait for your phantom pain video!
19:58
i have never in my live heard people saying they dont like kojima
i heard people saying he is a bit pretentious
i heard people saying he is not as good as people say he is
never say they dont like him please state your sorce because i call bull shit
David Hayter shouldn't have voiced Big Boss in the first place he should have been Solid Snake only
If I remember right Ground Zeros was only 20 or 30 bucks. We knew it was going to be very short but it was also cheap.
And also... That's Konami's fault, that's Konami's fault , that's Konami's fault 😅
10 years!? Wtf, you kidding me!?
compare to the previous Metal Gears, this one and the Phantom Pain have gone a lot darker. Unlike black ops series, US Marines here are a bunch of savage militia. Both US and Soviet were just using conflicts in smaller countries to benefit their own scheme
Honestly, i consider "Ground Zero" as a prologue to the "Phantom Pain".
lmao, you're consider ?.
you're speaking like people viewed the opposite, and as if kojima didn't made gz as tpp prologue?
what you're saying is the same as "i consider spider-man 2 is the prequel for spider-man 3" no shit, sherlock.
19:56 who? What?
SUPER excited about Phantom Pain!!!!!!!!!!!!
I spent more time on the menu, listening to tapes, music, backstory, etc
Than actually playing this demo
When he's done with MGS5, his soul might be shattered while trying to play "MG: Survive"... 😅
Personally when I recommend mgsV to people I would typically tell them to buy the definitive edition which has both ground zero and the phantom pain stitched together into one complete game
30$ prologue that was never put into or intergrated with the actual MGSV game
MGSV was the one marketed as open world
The problem with GZ and where all the animosity came from is that it was expected to be the next big game and at full price you basically got a demo for TPP.
Great, can't wait for TPP now :D
bkud forgot the extra side ops.
