Dear Lowart I have a question in the Archie Sonic Comics 25 years later I noticed that Amy was missing so what I would like to know is what happened to her🥀
Archie Tails is probably the one version that goes through the most shit emotionally. Like he was actually throwing hands with Sonic the moment his parents were branded as criminals
@@minraxbeasimp1976 Like, jesus christ, that ending, man, especially in japanese, is so painful to watch for him (helped by the incredible performance of his voice actress).
Tails' argument with Sonic after he breaks his dad out of jail is honestly super good. This unbridled frustration with Sonic that had been rising for over 20 issues, finally coming to a head. Tails letting everything erupt, phuaically taking that anger out on Sonic, and Sonic taking the time to realize that while he never meant to hurt his little bro with what he did, that doesnt excuse the fact that he did.
You know what's ironic, when Tails pinned down Sonic to let his parents escape, Rosemary wants to go back for him. But Amadeus told her not to because their son has been fighting with the freedom fighters against Eggman and other villains while they were in space, which shows the amount of faith he has in his son. Basically Amadeus, a man who hasn't seen his son for years, treated him as equal, before Sonic did despite Tails being with him longer.
@devinhamb6586 Amadeus is a general that fought in the Great War. I believe that he has the way to see how good of fighter/mature Tails really is. Also, unlike Sonic, he never saw Tails as a "Kid". (He was robotisazed on the day of Tails' birth. Therefore only saw his as young man who spent majority of his time fighting.)
I find Archie Tails very interesting, especially in the way that we litterally saw him gradually grow up over the courses of more than 200 issues of comics. Plus he has some batshit insane lore. Great job as always!!!

This. The comic is unique in that the inconsistencies during the early era created the depth of character in the later ones. By taking elements generated by writers handing the characters in a loosey-goosey fashion, the Flynn era staff was able to create *believable* characterization unlike any Sonic the Hedgehog canon, or even other works of fiction. Muddled beginnings made for deeply rich and satisfying endings, and it’s something that people underrate. Because Tails was inconsistent at the beginning, later writers could weave such contradictions into a tapestry of personality that created an extremely deep character study into Tails. Everyone is inconsistent and has different, often juxtaposed, aspects of their personalities that make us real and unique. The inconsistency turned harmony of Archie Sonic is what makes the narrative and its characters truly special because it reflects our own unique personalities.

Ian could have so easily wrote Archie Tails into actual Sonic games starting with Frontiers, but it just feels like the growth and the way he was in Archie to be a distant memory. Tails needs all the growth he got in the Archie comics, he really does!

I miss the Archie comics. I started around issue 49, when it was really getting serialized. Rode it until near the end when the whole Flynn thing happened, the echinas got poofed, and the world was rebooting. I got off there as my beloved world was destroyed. And yeah, Tails was great.
House of Cards was the first issue I ever read in a physical book. One of my FAVORITE issues. Edit: that ending shot of tails was so cute… great video!
Absolutely love these videos going into the character arcs of the Archie Sonic cast, been watching since one of the first long videos going into the series and it's all been great to watch
Archi comics got their own insane adaptation with riverdale where archi Andrew’s goes through a misery carousel of pure tramatic madness and he fights a wizard who wants to make a ghost train to bring the world in to an age of darkness after archi and his friends lose because they’re fated to.
I was honestly near tears by the end of this look at my absolute favorite character. Tails' growth mirrors my own, from overcompensating for insecurities to learning that the path to real success lies in mutual support with trusted friends. I was really looking forward to this video and Lowart delivered beyond all expectations, thank you!
While closer to the game version of Tails in background, there's a really great mini-arc for post-reboot Tails in the Champions tournament arc that re-iterates several of your points here, as you may know. After being knocked out in the first round by Honey, he's understandably upset at having his pride wounded, but while watching a later fight Sonic helps to cheer him up by reminding him how much of an invaluable teammate Tails is to him. Then, later, Tails is able to get the jump on an escaping Metal Sonic before he gets away with a Chaos Emerald where no one else is able, and times it for when the venue's defenses come back online. It's great seeing Tails not being judged for being a little petty/moping and later redeeming himself in his own eyes, and the way Sonic declares him the winner is just the cherry on top.
Having never read the comics, but following the games and feeling like I have a good idea of what his game self should be like if it were written well, I see a lot of differences here, especially in his early characterization, that are intriguing. I figure if his game self was written well, and the character writing was a focus from the beginning, he would've started off as a very nervous sidekick. Like, he sticks close to Sonic not just to help him, but because he's afraid of being forced to fight on his own, which would lead into the Adventure arc nicely, and that arc would also begin a long running arc of him growing from just "I can handle some things on my own" all the way to the point where Sonic and him feel like equals. I'd love to see him grow to the point where he's more like current Archie Tails, for sure. I also feel like they really tried and missed the mark of having the "Sonic and Tails fight, but end up closer than before" thing in Lost World. The writing was already not fantastic, but then you're gonna tell me that you're trying to have the takeaway from the fight be "Sonic needs to trust that he and Tails can handle things together" and then you're going to have the cutscene before the final boss show Tails decked out in dangerous weaponry, and Sonic is just gonna say "I'll handle this" and Tails plays no role in the final boss fight? SUCH a missed opportunity for a Zelda-eque collaborative boss battle to reinforce the themes of cooperation. Also, seeing Tails' parents for the first time and realizing they kinda look like my character is wild. Cooper really could be like, a parallel universe version of his dad lol
I feel bad for how stupid Tails’ parents are. Trusting Naugus who made attempts on their son’s life. I don’t blame the kid for losing faith in his mother. Anyways, I want to bring up Archie Sonic Online which aims to continue the pre-Super Genesis Wave story. I think you’ll enjoy it, especially since they did their own conclusion to the Naugus plotline.
@@bowserbreaker2515 ehh he learned his lesson, by the time actual comic was rebooted he already realised he was wrong in trusting naugus, and the characters are nice enough to be merciful towards Eggman, and geoffrey was far less nasty than him. @@bowserbreaker2515i agreed with you somewhat when the issue came out, but 254 showed pretty clearly that geoffrey isn't off the hook, the other characters still hate him lol.
The IDW run Tails is fantastic by the way. He's clever, confident, he's skilled and able to physically throw down while still being an intelligent fighter (one scene he calculates the trajectory of a thrown gas bomb on the fly and then catches and tosses it back with his tails). And is consistently the first one Sonic turns too whenever he gets in over his head. Also he's an unrepentant smartass and pragmatist that keeps Sonic grounded with his level headed analysis of everything.
Well, it makes sense that he's written that way considering the context of the writing staff. I can expand if you want. But tl;dr "End-of-Archie Tails with actual screen time", so we don't have to wait for him to develop. Effectively, he's...Tails. Tails, as we knew him from the games -until nonsensical retcons to his abilities and usefulness-
I think The Best Shadow is either The Shadow from Sonic Prime or The Shadow from Sonic X Shadow Generations Dark Beginnings The Cartoon. Respect and keep up the epic work.
I learned of the Battle Kukkus from the excellent fan game Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers. Battle Kukku XV is unlockable in that game and appears as a guaranteed rival spawn to Tails in Grand Prix mode!
@@hoobadoobamaster8551 As awesome as all that sounds, those things (outside of characterization obviously - "characterized" is a very broad term lmao) don't really have an impact on the quality of a character. Example - Sonic from the 2022 movie matures from the 1st movie, has plenty of characterization, and is easily on the stronger side of the Sonics (partly due to the chaos emeralds taking the Sonic Adventure incantation too seriously) - but how many people would say he's better than Sonic CD's Sonic? Or the OVA's? Or any of the Adventure games? Obviously he develops more, but sometimes, believe it or not, development does not define a quality character. Sure, it can define Tails if you want it to. In Archie he was always going to develop as long as the publication ran long enough - in a sense, developing was his purpose. But in media like the games, it isn't the case. Games need static characters to carry an image of who they are to the next generations - this is why we always see regression after what would be a permanent growth moment in other media. good lord i talk a lot wtf
@@hoobadoobamaster8551 also no, there is not a better Tails y default, due to modern media turning Tails into hot compounded garbage. All they had to do was work off of the early 2000s and they still messed it up.
@dantefredul6326 ok I see what your saying but the difference here is for Archie the characterization made him even more likable and did a lot more with his character, Unlike the games fluctuation with his character, Archie tails character grew from both his original personality and onward The thing with the characterization from the references you used Is tails doesn't really change much in them, sure he goes through more but there never feels like a big change with his personality, it never feels like it sticks to him in any meaningful way nor does it add to his personality With Archie tails you clearly see him go through changes throughout the issues, in some he becomes less confident, in others he tries to be more independent, but he does change and he dies grow ro become better, eventually he becomes what his game self always dreamed about being, even confident enough to act cocky at times And this is why I think Archie tails is better, because it upgrades tails by both quaility and quantity Also we both talk a lot
Finally, a video to post when people will once again start posting that "He'll get over it" panel as a "proof" that Archie Sonic comics did not understand the assignment. Thank you!
I feel like a lot of folks forget that despite all his tech and book smarts, Tails is still just a pre-teen kid, and lessons don't always stick immediately with them. It takes repetition and re-assertion for certain lessons to be learned permanently, especially ones that shape one's personality. So, even when considering the context of the games and Tails learning his self-worth in Sonic Adventure, he still knows deep down he has Sonic to rely upon should worse come to worst--you even get a bit of a glimpse of it in his death quotes in SA2, calling out Sonic's name. And that reliance became the status quo for him in most of the future titles when he spends most of the games afterwards playing a support role to Sonic rather than going on his own adventures to grow himself, so by the time of Sonic Lost World, Tails has his boosted confidence, but he still idolizes Sonic and seeks his approval, which is what leads to their feud in that game. And when Sonic Forces rolls around, watching Sonic lose and be presumed dead shortly after, it breaks him pretty badly and sends him back to his base instinct of cowering for Sonic's protection. It's not until Frontiers that Tails starts to realize that he needs to get away from Sonic in order for him to grow as a person, and his high intelligence starts meshing with his emotions a bit better as he gets older. Granted the characters will never actually properly age in canon, but you can see that his past experiences and seeing the Koco of the past go through similar hardships causes him to look inwards, reflect, and internalize a lot of stuff that's happened over the years. TL;DR: Just because you have a big life lesson epiphany doesn't mean you're going to change overnight. Making those changes takes work, which Tails doesn't really realize until Frontiers. And it's a similar story in the comics, where Tails repeatedly makes similar mistakes and it's not until much later that he begins to realize he needs to start growing up and taking charge for himself.
I’m glad Ian Flynn is writing for the games because at the very least tails can actually have his classic to SA2 arc pay off, but Archie tails will definitely do for now

I was just about to finish the retrospective, perfect timing! I’ve grown to love the concepts Archie Sonic throws out, and I have you to thank for it.
I'm just commenting on this to say I love your vids, man. Keep up the amazing work! 👍
Tails's writing in sonic frontiers makes sense because Ian Flynn was the writer of the archie comics
4:25 you’re my brother, Tails! I love you!
Another Archie Sonic Lowart Video, hell yeah
Why “this guy” is the most obscure guy.
because he doesn't have much going for him since the role of the tech guy got taken by Tails.
FINALLY! My favorite sonic character gets his due!
Same
I feel bad for how stupid Tails’ parents are.
It was a great conclusion. But I wish Geoffrey weren't redeemed and were instead exiled.
@@bowserbreaker2515 ehh he learned his lesson, by the time actual comic was rebooted he already realised he was wrong in trusting naugus, and the characters are nice enough to be merciful towards Eggman, and geoffrey was far less nasty than him. I just hope he struggles with his sins and it isn't jsut brushed aside.
a LOT of people during that time were a bit dumb in just....letting naugus do that
dude is an evil wizard who insitigated a RACE WAR, what did any of you dickheads THINK was gonna happen?
@@sarafontanini7051 What I liked about his story (due to it being cut short), was that it showed you can't always be redeemed. If you do something awful, you pray the price for it.
@@bowserbreaker2515i agreed with you somewhat when the issue came out, but 254 showed pretty clearly that geoffrey isn't off the hook, the other characters still hate him lol.
I have always loved these comics despite there sillyness I've watched all these videos keep up the great work!
Finally he's on a new sonic adventure
I wish Tail's tech knowledge was used more in the Archie comics
ANOTHER LOWART BANGER WOOOOOOO
My goat finally gets the respect he deserves.
Man, I'm starting to think that I can hear Lowart talk about anything and end up enjoying the video
Also he's an unrepentant smartass and pragmatist that keeps Sonic grounded with his level headed analysis of everything.
agreed! tails is consistently a highlight of the IDW comics for me
Well, it makes sense that he's written that way considering the context of the writing staff.
The thumbnail is such a goated reference-

Great video, and Archie Tails has always been my favorite version of him!
Funny you mentioned the battle bird armada, because appearently they menaced this little fox during;"Tails' sky patrol"! Deep cuts indeed?
the battlekukkus are from tails adventure actually! skypatrol is the one with the witchcarters :D
@haha_hollie . Sorry, still right about deep cuts? They didn't need referencing them, but have.
@@erikbihari3625 yeah, the comics are always full of deep cut stuff its awesome
I learned of the Battle Kukkus from the excellent fan game Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers. Battle Kukku XV is unlockable in that game and appears as a guaranteed rival spawn to Tails in Grand Prix mode!
@@haha_hollie. You know, even idw comics that find use for random bit transformers struggled with hoist!
I've been waiting for this
Hearing this I can respect your reasoning why you think Archie Tails is the best Tails
I’ve even reacted to this video
I mean is there really a better tails
Archie tails is the most characterized, matured, and strongest version of tails
@dantefredul6326 ok I see what your saying but the difference here is for Archie the characterization made him even more likable and did a lot more with his character,
Unlike the games fluctuation with his character, Archie tails character grew from both his original personality and onward
The thing with the characterization from the references you used Is tails doesn't really change much in them, sure he goes through more but there never feels like a big change with his personality, it never feels like it sticks to him in any meaningful way nor does it add to his personality
With Archie tails you clearly see him go through changes throughout the issues, in some he becomes less confident, in others he tries to be more independent, but he does change and he dies grow ro become better, eventually he becomes what his game self always dreamed about being, even confident enough to act cocky at times
And this is why I think Archie tails is better, because it upgrades tails by both quaility and quantity
Also we both talk a lot
Archie tails is really awesome and badass I love it so much. 😊
What a perfect summary of our favorite boy

I would love that so much
The children yearn for the mines
It never even crossed my mind to ask for that and now that you've presented it, it's all I want.
There a Archie MegaMan, I need it
Finally, a video to post when people will once again start posting that "He'll get over it" panel as a "proof" that Archie Sonic comics did not understand the assignment.
I’m glad Ian Flynn is writing for the games because at the very least tails can actually have his classic to SA2 arc pay off, but Archie tails will definitely do for now
Oh shoot, wasnt expecting a video on Tails! I thought Geoffrey or Khan was next.
A neat surprise

The way you start talking Abt Archie Tails makes me think how, knowing Tails as I know...
That Tails acts like Charmy Bee would lol
I feel like Archie Tails is the only Tails (apart from Adventure Tails) to really go through real growth and stick with it.
I'm most definitely wrong on this but I just wanted to write this as what I believe in for the time being until I'm corrected.
That and his depiction in “Sonic X” - especially during its 3rd season. It’s just a shame that the games don’t really stick that landing.
