    My uncle wrote this song and recorded it for the Detroit Tigers back in the day! So glad his legacy is represented on You Tube.

      Who is your uncle...this was Don Rondo & Kris Peterson recorded at Artie Fields Productions, 1968. This is the original and is being played at Tiger games to this day.

      This song is so sentimental back to one of the best years of my life in 1984 and now my 18 year old son loves this song and loves hearing my 1984 stories lol.

      I was four in 1968 so I don’t remember that season but we had the album and I listened to it very often. In my mind’s ear I still hear Ernie Harwell calling the pennant-clinching RBI: “Don Wert singles, and it’s all over!”

    50th year anniversary. I was 14 and growing up in Jackson, Michigan. I can tell you that the whole STATE watched and listened to every minute of this season. When the boys won it all... I remember all of us running into the streets yelling and screaming and running up and down the sidewalks. This was in Jackson, an hour away from Tiger Stadium. We all thought this was the way it should be; every year, another world series. Silly kids, eh? I've been in Arizona since my college days. But 1968 will always be so special for me. Even 1984 was special.. I had a buddy in tucson from the neighborhood in Jackson and he got a satellite dish that season. We ate Jackson coney dogs and watched nearly every game that year, from Tucson.

    1968, considered to be the last "pure" World Series as the following year would introduce divisional play to MLB.

    • @GaryLThmp
      @GaryLThmp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Trout Just as well, because the Tigers might have never made it otherwise. I well recall when the Tigers were near the end of a winning streak that clinched the pennant in September, they swept a series from the Oakland As. Earl Wilson hit a home run and shut out Oakland in the opener 3-0, Reggie Jackson gave Detroit a scare by hitting two homers off Denny McClain on national TV Saturday, but the Tigers rallied in the 9th to get McClain his 30th win anyway, and then Mickey Lolich was looking to lower his ERA and did it with a 13-0 rout. The As were a winning club for the first time since the close of the Macks' Athletics regime in Philadelphia, but it was still good for only sixth place that year.
      A couple weeks later, the situation was vastly different. The Tigers closed out the season with a series with the Washington Senators, which gave up the most runs in the American League that year, and was so terrible a ball club that Ted Williams won Manager of the Year next year just getting them above .500 and into fourth place. The Tigers remained stuck at their 103 win total by getting swept by the Senators in all three games. When the World Series began in St. Louis, the Tigers lost 3 out of the first 4 games, and looked pretty terrible doing it. If they had been playing just one season later, they would have had to play the sixth-place As right in the middle of a period the club was ice cold.
      I always thought the way the baseball owners came up with modern baseball was idiotic anyway. They should have simply approved the Pacific Coast League's application for major-league status right after WWII, and cooperated with Branch Rickey's Continental League venture in 1960. Then the entire postseason would have remained the World Series expanded by at least two teams (not to mention, the east coast wouldn't have had the experience of having their teams essentially disappear from view on trips to the west coast--as night baseball became predominant, but things like ESPN and significant broadcast audiences in the wee morning hours were still future--and west coast teams wouldn't have to be trying to adjust to playing early in the day --by their body clocks). Branch Rickey argued that expanding major-league baseball with teams rather than leagues would mean it would take years for expansion teams to catch up--and I believe time has shown him as a whole to be right.
      Look at the 1961-62 class. California under Gene Autry became famous for being a cursed team, though subsequently after 2000 they did win a World Series and had run of recent seasons in contention. After Washington had that one .500 season, it moved to Texas and underwent revolving ownerships by politicos and no championships until getting to the World Series recently (we'll see if Nolan Ryan's departure is a sign of going back to the winless management of decades past). The New York Mets got to postseason this year, only after a decade of struggle following their last WS appearance, and only five in total. The 120-loss 'Mazing Mets and & "Worst Team the Money Could Buy" was more the rule in those decades. The Houston Astros finally got into their first WS after 2000, only to fall into a deep hole in which it couldn't even get a cable TV contract and migrate to the AL before emerging back into post-season this year. The 1969 class didn't do much better. Montreal had exactly one strike-marred post-season appearance before falling into league ownership and moving to Washington to continue the frustration of Washington's winless tradition. San Diego barely avoided moving to Washington after several last-place finishes, and managed to win a couple pennants early and late in the Gwynn-is-gweaaatt!-but-the-Padres-are-terrible era before winning a couple division titles in the early 2000s. Bud Black has just been fired as manager after being the only element of stability in the constant overturn of upper managements and changing master plans since those titles. Seattle shifted to Milwaukee after only one year, enjoyed postseason for 1981-82 before sinking out of contention for decades until rising back into contention for a few seasons after another move to the NL. Kansas City started out the most successful MLB expansion team ever, getting into contention after a couple years and replacing the Oakland As dynasty with a West Division dynasty run of their own in the later 1970s, culminating with two World Series and a World title in 1985. However, two decades of losing followed before a new KC supersquad finally matured the last couple years. Of the 1978 AL class, Seattle managed a miracle 1995 season, a wild card berth and all-time win record season after 2000, but still has to make the WS (despite carrying last season's race to final day). Toronto has been the most successful expansion team after KC, winning five division titles starting in the mid 1980s and culminating in back-to-back World Series titles, but suffered through the longest active playoff drought in North American sports until winning the division title this year. Since then, Colorado has struggled to come to grips with getting pitchers to its hitting-happy mile-high air despite a World Series appearance and playoff berth in recent years, Miami has won a couple of World Series but has otherwise struggled for relevance in other seasons, Tampa Bay started more than a decade in the depths before contending on a budget in recent seasons, Arizona got off to a fast start with three division titles and World Series title but financially broke the franchise to do it, resulting in one lone division flag since.
      While the first round of NL and AL expansion was crushing the Continental League out of existence before it played a single game, at the same time Pete Rozelle was being hired by the NFL with the prime mission of doing the same to the American Football League. He totally failed--and it probably had a great deal to do with his ending up in the NFL Hall of Fame. Overall, the AFL and successor AFC teams have tended to strengthen the NFL more than the teams MLB added piecemeal over the decades. Even the expansion teams sparked by the AFL and since have tended to have more stable management and better performance on the field on a whole than baseball's. I guess when the AL and NL turned the PCL and CL aside, they cut off their nose to spite their own face because the quicker and more successful expansion of its product likely helped pro football overhaul major-league baseball as the top sport of the nation by the end of the 1960s.
      There's no earthly reason for the World Series to be limited to the final round between two teams. It isn't that way in the Little League, Junior League or College levels. Not even the early versions of the major league World Series from 1883-1890 and 1903 before the rules were permanently fixed in 1905 always involved just two league champions--it's just that no one thought of involving them in a post-season round-robin tournament like today. Baseball has always tended to be a marathon sport, with the WS essentially a notch above the All-Star game in being a glorified exhibition to showcase the best of the sport and give one league bragging rights over the next year. Now because the World Series no longer includes the entire postseason rounds, suddenly whether a team's season proves successful or not after 162 games comes down to the crapshoot of a handful of playoff games. That means managers can get fired because a team with good hitting and solid pitching that equips it to breeze past the marathon of a season can't sprint to the flag at the finish, because they lack the power hitting and ace pitching that makes a big difference in a short series. Or because the team is more inexperienced in the post season than a veteran dynasty. Or simply because one barely-over .500 playoff team or even one mediocre player happened to get red hot at the right time.

    This song debuted around August of 1967. There may have been some promotional ties with National Bank of Detroit. The estate of legendary Detroit producer/studio owner Artie Fields should know.

    Just a frigging awesome song! There's nothing better than hearing this at Comerica after a Tigers win! I will put are song up any other MLB team and especially the Cubs, with that super annoying "Go Cubs Go" I got so sick of that frigging song in 2016!

    @saul7 Briggs Stadium and Tiger Stadium were one and the same. Briggs Stadium was renamed when John Fetzer became the Tigers owner in the early 60's.

    @hawkeyedave Sounds to me a lot like a fast paced version of Bing Crosby singing Mele Kalikimaka but wasn't he a part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates? Go get 'em, Tigers.
