Definitely worth it! $1500/mo for a furnished 3 bedroom house with everything included is an amazing deal. Without having to worry about the basics like water and heat you'll be able to focus your energy on planning and taking steps for your long term goals. You and your family are so inspiring.
I agree it’s totally worth that. It’s what I would expect to pay even locally in the uk. And when you said all bedding and changes of bedding is included that’s well worth it- I know you have to change and wash it but just it being provided means you don’t have to go buy anything for 3 months. And as you say you can afford to do it as the other months have been so much less. And looking at the budget the extra expense and the difference is the rest. Take that away and you back to where you were. So in my mind you not spending more then the rent…. As in you are not saying well to be in the house we also need to spend on extra things and so the costs go up. I think it’s very important that you keep warm over the winter so you keep well. If you are not well and in the RV everyone is gonna be I’ll quick, atleast in the house there is space to separate if need be to keep others well. It’s good thinking.
ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!!!! I am shocked that you even found a deal like that in a whole house with bedrooms, etc and all of the bells and whistles for only $1500. Enjoy every moment!! Your journey has been so inspiring!
I was guessing about $1400. Back in March we sold our 12 acre homestead and purchased 56 acres of raw land, moved the animals and got a camper. But right before our camper purchase we did a 6 months lease until we could get a road built and have a place for my mother she's 86 and lives with us. Plus we have littles. We've been basically part time on the property off grid. Well, I was feeling really down like I failed cause we decided to continue our rent through the winter for comforts mainly for them. Watching this video made me feel a lot better about our choice. Looking forward to your meal prep videos!
I love that you are not locked into your path. You know where you are headed and are flexible based on where you are in the moment. The rental fits you for the 3.5 month and you just do it. $3750/12 is just a bit over $300 a month for the year. Catch up on movies, tv series, educational content. Let your little one have plenty of room to zoom around in inside your rental for the next 3 mos. It will allow you to do a variety of activities and content for your channel. Win-Win deal.
I loved your last video. I meant to comment. We moved from Connecticut to Tennessee just so one of our kids go to attend a special school to help him with his dyslexia. People thought we were crazy for making such a big change, but I just thought well if it doesn’t work, we’ll come back. it did work and we’re super grateful. We’ve been here eight years. But the one thing I learned from that is to live year by year and always be open to change. Nothing is forever. Your rental looks awesome so happy for you and your family that you get a little break from off grid and by the time you get back toliving on the farm, you’ll appreciate it too.
I think you are wise. I feel like it is a good decision to not live in the camper during the winter, I know you could if you had too. Keeping the camper warm and dealing with water and all that would be a pain. With the little guy I think you choose well. Things will get done in time. Also, gives you all a break from it too. So, when you go back to it will feel like you're camping and fun. Love the house you rented. What is the sq footage on it. How many bedrooms. Maybe you covered it but been sick with the crude, so may have forgot if you did. A little tour would be nice too if you feel like it or it is not too personal. Peace!
In my building in greater Vancouver (suburb), you would get a one bedroom, one bath, utilities included 840 sq ft apartment with no balcony for what you are paying. My Mum is paying around the same as you for a 640 sq ft apartment with only heat included and no balcony in Vancouver, BC. My brother is paying twice your amount for the same sq ft as what we have. He has 2 bed, 1 bath but he has a 500 sq ft roof top patio in the same building as my Mum. Since we are long term renters, we will only pay $1240 USD after our next increase. Our apartment is almost 1200 sq ft, 2 bed, 2 bath, utilities included with 100 sq ft balcony. I wouldn’t regret moving into warmer environment for the winter. You did well.
I was close on my monthly rental guess - $1450. IMO, this is a great plan for all of the ressons you listed in your video. Most importantly, adaptability is key in long term planning goals. There has to be built in wiggle room for changing wants/needs; while still steadfastedly working towards your goal. You have exemplified that perfectly. Wishing continued blessings for your family.
It would be cool to see what you all end up doing each month for free fun. We are home a lot and don’t really do much other than work, church, school activities
Really appreciate your perspective and your willingness to share the rationale behind your decisions. We live in the north and winters can be harsh. Just prepping and hauling wood for heat is a major time and personal energy drain.
A very wise decision to rent durng the winter especially with the baby! We may have a rough winter with snow and ice so you won't have to worry about getting around and making sure all is in working condition during winter storms. It really seems like a nice place, enjoy!
I wanted to comment again since this is your latest video, I want you to know how important all the things you bring to us on your videos, with the recent storms, the prepping videos are a life saver and a great guide to being prepared as we are heading into the snow and ice season and I suspect it will be rough I am in Pennsylvania and fall came quickly or eariler. I truly appreciate this channel and have recommened it to friends, I don't miss an episode! Many thanks for sharing your experiences and expertise! Be safe!
I think you guys are doing a awesome job in planning what you need to do for the winter 🥶 to keep your family warm, money comes and goes but sometimes you need to put priorities in front of saving money and being warm is a very big deal .
Mules and donkeys are very protective animals. They keep anything dangerous off our property. We have help lined up already for when we go on our trip.
That house is an awesome deal and can walk to store, library, and park. You were very smart doing this especially for the winter. I hope I'll be around to see what your homestead looks like once you get your house built. Many blessings!
Woo-woo! I guessed right. My son rents an unfurnished 1 bedroom apt in Midlothian and pays $1,500/mo without utilities so that was my reference point. I knew you'd have a way better deal there. Congrats on the cozy winter.
Your rental property complete with utilities is a smokin deal. Your doing well and i say enjoy and use this time to reset. Does the rental have alternate heat if the power goes out?
@@raisingwildflowers that is good that you have the Mr. Buddy heaters. Looks like you are prepared with backups. Enjoy your vacation in the house and I hope you are able to set up alternate streams of income to further your dreams.
Love these videos! We are building a cabin and homestead ourselves on our land in TN. We are not currently off grid but did life off grid for about 3.5 months. Nice to see someone else doing the same thing. I feel a little less crazy to tackle all we are seeing others accomplish it too!
What a GREAT price for your rental! You are truly blessed to have found such a beautiful rental for such a low monthly cost. Enjoy every minute of living there. I hope the cats, horses and chickens will survive the cold winters. I’m so worried for them.
I think you did the right thing for your family in the situation your in now. It would have been a real struggle to live in your RV this winter b/c your homestead isn't fully set up yet. Good job!
Can’t wait to see house plans. Be sure to keep in mind kids moving out and not needing so many rooms in the future. We have a big house but kids are graduating and moving out so now I’m going to have a big house to clean for 2 people or move again to a smaller house.
Did you notice the guess I made in your last video about rental? I nailed it!! Yes, living cost is too high. I cannot afford 2500$! It is 7.5 lac pkr which does not match our income!!
Hi Katie, I know you may be busy, but our product has been shipped. I just wanted to confirm if you have received it so we can plan the next steps for the video shoot. Thank you! Amy KARFO
Sounds like a great rent/bill price, and it will stop you all being miserable, cramped up in a small RV space and cold= win win. Keep renting it in 2025?!!!
Katie, I had a question about your pets. I was curious how you can feed them all so inexpensively, I have only 1 dog and it cost about 32$ just for his dog food. Do the donkeys and horses only eat the grass on your land and the chickens just peck around for bugs? Also are you still able to have passive income of renting out land for horses or is that juat a summer income? ❤
Here is a video I did on feeding our animals for $100/mo th-cam.com/video/TjA2BiHdo2k/w-d-xo.html The equines are just eating the pasture grass right now. During the winter we may need to get some hay for a couple months - it's $30 for a large round bale here (approx $30 per animal per month). Or we may barter with someone for some hay lol. We are not going to be boarding the extra horses on our property through the winter - it was mostly just to give them a nice pasture to graze on during the summer :)
I don’t think y’all might be ready for the off grid lifestyle, just my opinion. Once you get used to be spoiled with what everyone else has it will be hard to go back. Maybe just stay in a rental as long as you can until your house is built.
It really is just the cold weather 🥶 Being off grid is easy for me when it’s warm. I could literally live in a tent (I mean, its a joke but I also actually have so … 😂)
There is always that one person. Is more so about the kids being comfortable and safe more space to move around for the little one. Good parenting choice.
@@raisingwildflowers Yeah no, I get it, I am a new follower n love your channel. It’s been helpful being since I’m new on a homestead n off grid myself but my friends I live around on this mountain ( that have lived here for many moons)with, gave me similar advice just as a heads up. So yes also do what works best for y’all 😊
Didn't you get it? The off grid is for you tube monetization...no way to tell these days if someone is telling the truth. That could be their own home while faking homesteading.....
Just my 2 cents. If you are really dedicated to going all in on off grid and low expenses you should have stayed in the camper. I did it in 2006 in the NC mountains with my family, wife and daughters 6 and 9 year olds. Livedin a 25’ camper while building a house by myself. Sometimes you have to make huge sacrifices to get it done. BTW I was 40 years old at the time. All the money spent on rent could be going into the house, well, septic or whatever. Not worth throwing money away on rent, IMO. I am building a new house now in NC. Living out of camper again, no rent. House will be free and clear. Finishing up now, cabinets trim going in.
What do you think - is the cost worth it?

What is protecting your chickens and horses while your away and if your going on trip later, who will feed and protect them?
Mules and donkeys are very protective animals. They keep anything dangerous off our property. We have help lined up already for when we go on our trip.
Wise decision, good for you! We eat seasonally and it makes perfect sense to also live seasonally.
