ignore the comments, I give you guys so much credit for being original, we are so trapped in what society think we should do that it stops many of us living our best life. I don't see renting a place for the harshest months a failure, i think it is a smart thing with the baby. You have the comforts to spend the winter really planning and investigating the things you need to to build your home and price things out and putting a plan together. i know you will be successful!

I love this video and find that so much of what you have shared resonates with me. I am cheering on these great things you said: Growth is not linear. It's hills, valleys, and plateaus. Yes! Be adaptable and be willing to change your mind. Be willing to fail. Keep working towards your goals, even if your intensity or pace shifts. I am older now and can verify that all of these things are true.
I don't see how anyone could say you're failing. You are doing all the things you want to do...living life to the fullest....enjoying the stage you are in.....learning and growing....and moving forward with your destination in sight.

Life happens and it took me 17 years to get my bachelors after 4 changes in majors and two beautiful baby girls. Had to get that piece of paper before they graduated high school. Made it with 3 years to spare! Had a wonderful life and career before retiring at 67. Keep moving forward and be prepared to change as needed. Y'all are doing great!

Completely & I mean COMPLETELY understand where you’re coming from. We ended our full time van living & slowed down our process of our desert homestead to find some comfort for a minute & take things at our own pace. We didn’t end up renting, but bought a reasonably priced mobile home to use later as a rental property or perhaps even later… a home for us when we’re tired of the homestead.

GREAT video! No apologies to anyone for living your own life. My inlaws lived in a 5th wheel two different times in the last 10 years in our driveway while they were building houses. They had the artic package for 4 season living and it was still challenging (and they were just 2 adults). (Especially the year VA got many feet of snow, 2015 or 2016?)
Enjoy that cozy warm space with your family. It's you bear cave for the winter! Because of the area I would guess $1500/mo max.

We forget that working a nine to five is NOT natural. My husband and i are in our late fifties and left the corporate world ten years ago. Got a farm, made lots of mistakes, did lots of good things. Our life is sometimes hard and sometimes easy, but always interesting. People take vacations all the time and go stay in super nice resorts to have a break from their routine. How is that any different than y'all renting a warm place for winter? I think it's just common sense smart. In my opinion, the life you and we have chosen is much better than a life of quiet desperation living inside the herd. 😊

One day we all could do this, if you can grow your own food is the first step. Sow and you will reap your hard work. we are in Michigan we just had our first frost this morning. We raise Alpine dairy goats for milk and will be keeping two bucks/wethers for meat we also make goat milk beauty products from the milk our goats produce. We raise new Zealand meat rabbits for their meat and pellets. We have laying hens for eggs, we are getting heritage turkeys next spring to raise for turkey meat. We are a small orchard, raise beds for our garden. We are making our home as the homestead we want to live free from store bought foods and know we are raising our animals well and they have a good life to give back to us. Thank you for sharing. My dishwasher broke. I had that thing hauled out and used the space for something else. I’m trying to get rid of stuff that eventually needs to be replaced and we can live without. Air conditioning went out a few years back. Got window air conditioners and only cool the room we need, saved a ton of money with that switch. When the garbage disposal goes that’s not getting replaced either.

Free housesitting for the winter from friends. These guys would never pay rent and not be able to save and live on $850.00 a month.

You are very fortunate to have found a place. It’s so very difficult here in WNC. It just became more difficult, for obvious reasons. That’s so good. Here, everything is Air BNB, that’s one problem. Id guess $1500 where you are in SW Va.

A strange concept not to do something because at some time in the future........most people move house every 7 years so obviously life changes. I am 73, my garden is difficult but I still try to grow a lot of my food, fruit etc. It just takes longer, more is left to grass.....I know in the future I will need somewhere smaller but it will always have a garden

I totally understand you renting for 3 months, there would be nothing worse than trying to entertain a toddler in a camper in the freezing for that time, plus your older kids wouldn’t find it easy either and all of you cramped in there over winter would be very hard.
It’s a journey, life is a journey. That is the fun part of life being able to adapt to the circumstances you are in at the time.
We too aren’t following what’s expected. So we had a big house in the city but we always wanted to live in the country. But when you retire shouldn’t you downsize? Nope so we bought 1 1/4 acres and built another big house. The reason for the big home mainly is for investment factor as who wants a little box on acreage when time to resell. And yes I know we could die tomorrow but so what, you are dead for a very long time. My motto is I’m dying to live not living to die. When you see so many elderly down size and sitting in chairs. When I can garden, swim, play with my 2 puppies (rough coats of course) these will be our last dogs we take on but hey why not. So yes I do get your picture. Enjoy life at your own pace.

Okay, I'll guess what you're paying on that adorable place. $1600? The main thing I've learned from you is to try things out and don't be afraid to fail or what others think about what you're doing. Thank you for the reminders, and all of your content.

My brother lived in their fifth wheel (while building a house) and spent $100 in propane and who knows how much in gas for the generator. We're in Western Montana, though, so winter westher is here for about 8 months. 😅 It's very expensive to live off grid in winter.

Yes! There were definitely some added expenses that we considered if we stayed. Gas for heating and cooking, more trips to the laundromat (more clothes, thicker clothes, less ability to hand wash), plus just spending money to get the camper all set up for winter living.

With all utilities included and being rural SW VA, I would say you are paying $1100/month max. Not sure if it’s a short term rental lease or more Airbnb rental.

Let me take a guess- if it’s 1500 then it’s a jackpot deal but if it’s 2000 and above then it’s going to be for real short term!
After seeing your house I think up to 2000 is a good deal
