My scientist father had a trick for vacuum sealing jars of rice or beans: he would place a small square of aluminum foil on top of the rice, then light a match and place it on top of the foil. Screw on the lid, and flame will use up all the oxygen until it goes out in less than half a second. Things would last for years since there was no oxygen in the jar to feed bacteria or any possible bug eggs.
What is the point in being” prepared” then? If you are stock piling food for a possible shortage why wouldn’t you just store healthier foods? You only eat crap if it’s all you can get.
9:45 I buy raw honey by the gallon from an apiary three miles down the road. Super good! It always crystalizes within a month. I put it in the slowcooker on warm to reliquefy it.
Florida here. Our back to back storms made me realize I need a more prepared pantry. (Even though you're taking the risk of a flood taking it anyway) I think I'll still feel better knowing we are better prepared. Thank you for the tips ❤
@mkeoppen20 one way to prepare is to put together some simple no-cook or low-cook recipes for times when you have to pull things together and keep the items you need in your pantry. Things like pantry salads made with canned beans or canned potatoes as a base, muesli recipe (uncooked granola), recipes that use tuna straight from the can, efc
This is all awesome. But when Helene hit. we really saw the holes in our preparedness. With no electric, phone, internet or cell service for over a week. So make sure to think about how will I cook all the food. Have an extra propane or gas or charcoal. With no cell service, think of way to communication with love ones. And ways to get new of what’s going on.
Kimmy, I will back you up on the powdered food options! My family loves the Ranch dressing that I make. I always hated purchasing buttermilk just for the 2 cups needed for my recipe. THEN...I discovered powdered buttermilk, and I am hooked. It keeps forever, and I have no waste. ❤
One shelf of backup food that you can draw from as needed isn't very difficult to build up. Just a few dollars each shop can get you well chosen extras. After repeated power and gas loss due to weather and wildfire, I like to choose things that can be eaten straight out of the can in a cold meal (or cooked in meals if the power is on). Like canned baby potatoes, tuna and peas mixed with an oil & vinegar dressing and dried herbs if you like - makes a tasty salad meal.
The people who voted for them were warned what they really are and what they could do to them and the economy. It’s all the kids I worry about. Young kids aren’t going to understand
I'm Asian (Filipino) and SPAM is a staple. I actually love it and if I can only choose to stock pile just 1 canned meat, I will definitely choose Spam. Second would be corned beef or tuna. I could do a lot of meals with just those 3 😁
As an example, one of my personal investments recently has been my electric grain mill. This machine is absolutely the reason I am now grinding my wheat! It does no good to have tons of grain if you never use it. I also have a manual grain mill, but it is very tedious for me to use. I absolutely would if needs be, but boy that electric grinder is awesome!🎉
Thank you this video was very helpful. I think we about to have a food crisis with every thing going on and I want to be able to stock up now and feed my family.
For chicken/turkey noodles soup I prefer using egg noodles. Before my mom & maternal grandmother passed away, I would help them make egg noodles from scratch. I haven't done it in 30+ years.
As someone with a soy allergy I need to do most of my own cooking from scratch. I have grown to really enjoy it and appreciate your vids because I always have ingredients o need on hand!
This is exactly why I've been learning vegan foods! The pandemic opened my eyes, esp for things that I didn't think about going bad, like oil. It's not that it wasn't obvious, it just never happened to me before (having oil go bad for me). I don't even know why I never used lentils before! They're so versatile! I'm learning, and this channel is so helpful ❤️🥰 Thank you!
I like doing homemade noodles for chicken soup, but if I can’t I like Amish egg noodles. Also we have a bee yard and yes crystallized honey is the real deal. We harvest and jar about 10 gallons a year. It’s so nice 🤗
I make it all the time! My son calls me when he or his wife are sick asking for it. He really enjoyed it while going through chemo. I always keep the ingredients on hand. I batch cook lots of soups and freeze them, helps in Michigan winters😊
I never had Spam until I created a to-go food bag with food for an initial crisis. Not everyone needs this, but we live in earthquake country. The time to get out of a residence is key. So I added those single servings of reduced sodium spam for a lunch option. I've found rotation to be pretty easy just using Spam as a breakfast meat every 6 months for a number of days to use what's coming up for expiration. It's not bad incorporated into scrambled eggs.
I love fried sliced Spam with scrambled eggs and toast! It is quite good expensive so I don’t eat it often. My Hispanic neighbor showed me how to make taquitos from canned roast beef in gravy;( they are amazing!)
Great idea on the bags of flour and sealing them..Going to try that..i also seal in jars or bags my pasta, keeping the air out, it will last longer. Made a mistake leaving noodles in their bags and storing in buckets. It went rancid..
My husband likes the German style egg noodles. If he wants the noodles more-almost like a dumpling-I look fo the Reames Homestyle egg noodles in the freezer section.
Great idea, I’m going to try orzo in my chicken noodle soup! Do you ever make your own chicken stock with scraps? It’s practically free, healthy, and delicious! I made it in my Instant Pot and froze it for years, but once I tried pressure canning it and found out how easy it is, I was hooked!
Honey powder is another item I like to keep on hand. I use it for the sweetener when making my yogurt. I also use it in breads. I've also started using powdered milk when making bread. Morning Moos is awesome for drinking.
Hi Kimmie I saw you put carrots in the freezer but I tried that and left them to defrost and I had to throw them out they were mushy. What did I do wrong help.
A really simple idea for orzo, Lemon Black pepper Parmesan. Easy peasy. Pesto orzo, add jarred pesto to cooked orzo. You could add protein like chicken if you want.
Ms. Kimmy, I always have kidney beans. Good for veggie tacos or veggie chili. I'll share this video with my sister. She wants to be a SAHM and could really need these tips.
I really like the Walmart version of Spam. The lo salt and reduced fat are as good as, or, to me, better than the branded SPAM. Right now they're only $2.00 a can. Lots of flavors. Try one can and see if you like it.
Great video Kimmy! I love my freeze dryer too. Been doing lots of eggs lately. Prices are low now but will go up soon (seasonal changes) so stocking up while I can.
I grew up eating Spam too. Don't really care for it now, but yeah in a pinch it's good to have and my son loves it. I have several in my stock. After us kids had left home, one of the dinners my daddy loved to have was fried Spam, scrambled eggs, and pork and beans. Lol. Memories!
Happily, I can say yes after being tested by Helene. Unfortunately, when shtf, it completely took my appetite 😂. Our kids are on their own and my husband is capable of feeding himself. He didn't feel much like eating either.
Hi there Kimmy! I hope all is well 😊. Excellent video as always. I used to use Acini Di Pepe pasta in my chicken soup. I haven’t seen it in my supermarket lately, so I switched to Orzo ☺️. Hope your day is good 😉🕊️.
Also, if things are super duper tight, don’t forget to check out the blessing boxes in your town! They often have bags of dried beans and lots of canned good to tide you over. ❤

So I will be trying that this week.Thank you so much for the tip.
Thanks for reminding people that if an emergency happens not all meals will be healthy and balanced.
In an emergency or food scarcity, higher calorie "unhealthy" foods are actually better.
What is the point in being” prepared” then? If you are stock piling food for a possible shortage why wouldn’t you just store healthier foods? You only eat crap if it’s all you can get.
I wish you had a printable page of what you call Essentials and what they can be turned into would be helpful!
that would be amazing! Great idea I wish that too!

Glad you're safe.
I invested in a gallon of honey in early 2020 and we're getting to the last quart. I use in it tea and baking all the time, so delicious!
This is the most comprehensive pantry video I have ever seen! And I have watched quite a few.
Thank you!!
The flour in paper bags! I've studied a lot of "stockers" and this has never been presented. Good idea.
Thank you !!!!! Income low but will try and do

My ex-son in law works for Kroger, he told me last week there will be a price hike soon for most food items in the store.
All stores are going to do this.😢 tariffs 😢
The people who voted for them were warned what they really are and what they could do to them and the economy. It’s all the kids I worry about. Young kids aren’t going to understand
The flour bricks! Brilliant!
My dad called white bread from grocery store mattress stuffing.
You're providing knowledge and have been all along. Thank you for that.
The flour blocks is the best idea I’ve heard in a long time! I’m going to start tomorrow for some of my basic recipes. 😊

Thank you ❤️
Kimmy your pantry is impressive and shocking all at once. Great video!
For chicken/turkey noodles soup I prefer using egg noodles. Before my mom & maternal grandmother passed away, I would help them make egg noodles from scratch. I haven't done it in 30+ years.
Oh wow, what an incredible skill and memory to have! I love the thick “Gramma’s” brand in the stores the best.
As someone with a soy allergy I need to do most of my own cooking from scratch. I have grown to really enjoy it and appreciate your vids because I always have ingredients o need on hand!
Woman! You have a lot of space! 🤣🤣🤣 Your pantry is the size of my kitchen!
Hello Kimberly thank you so much for sharing your vlog much appreciated by us all & keep up with the great work that you do ❤️

Wonderful tips you are such an asset to your family!!
I use spam to make fried rice. It's Soo good! My kids don't even see it as a "Oh no we're broke" food. Just that Mama's making rice 🍚 yum. 💝
Love this idea.
Spam fried rice was literally a revelation. Amazing!
Love all these tips.
❤ the She's in Her Apron mug ❤

Always happy to learn something new from you. How about a video to show us how to make homemade Knorr sides and Rice a Roni?
That’s actually on the list! I’m really excited about it
Apple sauce is also a good substitute for eggs (for baking)

Chicken soup with wild rice for the win.
Very informative video. You have some great ideas
I like the thin egg noodles for chicken soup, almost like angle hair. It reminds me of the Lipton's soup version.
This guide was a big help for me, thanks a lot!
I would love to see the bread bowl recipe
Great idea on the bags of flour and sealing them..Going to try that..i also seal in jars or bags my pasta, keeping the air out, it will last longer. Made a mistake leaving noodles in their bags and storing in buckets. It went rancid..

Glad you like them! Thanks for being here!
The gallon jar of honey that I’m currently using is from my grandparents ranch. They sold the ranch in the mid 80’s. 😮😂
Great video! Love your channel.
Hi Kimmie I saw you put carrots in the freezer but I tried that and left them to defrost and I had to throw them out they were mushy. What did I do wrong help.
I take it out of the freezer and into the pot with the broth without letting it thaw.
Great info kimmy. Ty
We love orzo & elbow macaroni for chicken soup.
Wow! Great ideas! Thanks, Kimmie!!!

Don’t like tuna but I love salmon.

You always have great ideas. Thank you. We have a Freeze Drier and love it. I like to do meals like soups or stews to make the hydrating easier.

How do you cook spam? I have never tried it and have always seen it as a pet caned food but would love to try it.
I store my rice and flour and yeast in the freezer . It works for me.
Do you have a video on explaining what wheat to use to grind for making bread. IE hard white versus hard red grain.Etc.
I noticed powdered sugar can taste stale pretty quickly so i like to just grind granulated for fresh powdered!
This was amazing! Just when I think I've stocked my shelves, there is always more to do!. I need to invest in mylar bags. Thank you as always.😊
I wish I could get a freezer drier. ❤❤❤
Happily, I can say yes after being tested by Helene. Unfortunately, when shtf, it completely took my appetite 😂. Our kids are on their own and my husband is capable of feeding himself. He didn't feel much like eating either.
I can imagine! Are you ok? I hope so 🙏🙏🙏
