In this video, I'm sharing how I made $6000 in 12 hours as a private jet pilot. If you're interested in a career in aviation, then this video is for you!
As a private jet pilot, my job is to fly people around the world. In this video, I'll share with you how I made $6000 in just 12 hours by flying people around the globe. Whether you're a flight student or a seasoned pilot, I hope you'll find this video helpful!
Lots of cockpit footage in this one!
Yesterday I gave money to a couple of student pilots that are on their way up to the Flight Levels. Then we flew the Gulfstream G4 jet from Chino CA to San Diego CA and Back in under 12 hours. I made $6000 USD for the day! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm excited to give back more to the aviation community!
I feel like it’s rare to find guys that are super successful AND super down to earth like this guy. You could tell this is genuine, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d do this kinda stuff off camera too. Mad respect helping these guys out. So cool! Big bucks and a big heart.
Thanks pal! I appreciate that! I love doing things for other people, cameras or no cameras! Hope you have a good weekend! 🍻
@@gear_down you really are bud!
you aint make 6k flyin lil bird , we know u full of sheet @@gear_down
I don’t 1:13 o 😮😮😢 1:27 😮😮 is is a 😢😢😮
@brackenquinton2955 I completely agree! I love to see guys like this paying it forward. We need more genuine aviators like @gear_down in the community!! I am looking forward to doing this one day soon myself.
I smell the beginnings of the “Gear Down Foundation”. Love watching people give back. Keep it up kind sir.
I used to do this when I owned the flight school. I’ll talk about it on an upcoming live!
Found you through researching about the licenses needed to make money. Always wanted to get one. Planning on it once my bachelors is done and I have more money saved for it. Keep up the great content
Thank you!!! Please reach out when you make the leap! It’s a great rewarding career!
Step one ditch the degree step two forget about aviation If your only interested about pay
Synthwave+sunsets=a vibe
Faxxxxxxx
Why do you always as PF in your videos?
Last live stream was really good! You talked about requirements for SIC position, but you did not mention a few things. Do you accept a non English pilot with good writing, speaking and understanding English? What about non us workers, but with green card with work permission? Thanks 🙏
Have to have FAA Medical, pilot cert & type rating to fly any aircraft I manage
Also you haven’t watched enough of my videos or follow me on instagram @gear_down I fly as a co pilot all the time
@@gear_down I watched every video you post, but unfortunately I missed that moment. Sorry for that!
👋🏻KSRQ☀️🌴🇺🇸
8.5 hrs into my PPL and this completely made my turkey day brother… im fortunate to be able to fund my training, but there’s a lot of pilots to be struggling.
Love your channel and content, and I LOVE that such a successful dude remembers where he started. It’ll come back 10 fold man, good on you!
Blue skies and nothing but success. Keep the awesome content coming! Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks man!!! Good luck with the PPL. It’s the most fun rating IMHO aside from seaplane! Cheers!
watching you network while helping those guys out was pretty slick. That’s the shit i aspire towards !
Thank brother! Hope all is well! 🍻 🦃
Love the wholesome content! Just passed my commercial multi-engine checkride last week, and its content like this that's helped me get through. You're doing great work out there man!
Wow man!!! Congrats that’s great to hear! Good luck out there. There are tons of opportunities!!!!
How can that be when the cost per hr is around $8000 I don't get it brother. Bro next time tell the same guy to clean the windshield you can fall.
I absolutely love your content. As a want to be pilot, I live vicariously through your channel and others, such as CitationMax, Fly With Owen and JR Aviation. Thanks for sharing all your adventures and giving back to pilots in-training. God bless you and safe travels!
Wow, thanks!
My grandson is currently finishing up his instrument rating at Fullerton. He is also working his way through the $150 per flight to get his license. His plan is going all the way to either Commercial or Private depending on whatever opportunities arise. He is a hard working kid and started a business at 10 years old with his sister in Vegas. He does that part time job in Yorba Linda, works in a concrete tool shop as a welder and sharpening saw blades, takes classes on line and finish up flight school as we speak. This 19 year old is a special individual that will be successful in life. A work ethic has always been a major part of his upbringing.
Great Vlog!
Real question is whos spending tens of thousands to fly from OC to to San Diego (a hour and 45 min drive)
Artists that are on tour and have to perform at multiple venues in the same day.
Mannnn I wish there were people like you in my area 😭 free flight lessons is a gift from god
You never know when I might be in your city! 👀
Man I have a PPL w/ instrument rating…. Called it quits in the beginning of my commercial. Some reason I got very nervous flying solo even though I’ve done it a handful of times. Haven’t flown in 5 years but I really regret stopping. You inspire me getting back into it, but how do I get over that hump of anxiety?
Yo, fantastic video today! I’d imagine you really made the students’ day. This is quickly becoming my favorite channel. You and Owen are both super inspirational. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for the amazing compliment Jonny! Happy thanksgiving man!
“Money on their books” lmao
Are they inmates or pilots?
Could be both hahaha
I wish there was more individuals like you out there. I have a met a few. Not many. - I've done the same in the film world for aspiring actors, writers and producers. It is my hope to one day to be able to have a similar lifestyle in the aviation world, while still making films, and give back in the same manner. - Keep up the great work. - Lots of good energy in your life.
Hey I see you went in threshold hangar I worked right next door socal MRo many years ago anyways shout out to Mark from Threshold small ass world I do my flight lessons there at chino im currently studying for A&P. Anyways thanks for the good content
If you feel like blessing a flight student in AZ for Christmas, I’ll be at my apartment heating up my third ramen for the day.
I remember those days! Keep grinding! You’ll be up here in no time
@@gear_down amen brotha! Stay up 🤙🏾
The rawest flight line interview ever nicely done sir! Thanks for encouraging those guys… Checkride prep I was selling stuff to finish my ppl! Super cool and raw thanks for sharing bruh! Btw I too am 61.55 typed 🤣
Nasty high pitch sound while taxing for takeoff. You get 3K and your FO gets 2K? That 3K include your A&P mechanic services or just the flying and flight attendant parts?
I went from a curtesy ride to first instructional ride in the same day. I had no plan, just had to fly. I had five lessons before I realized how much money I would be spending to get my Private ticket. I flew almost everyday for 6 weeks.
I used all my savings ($200), Hey, I was nineteen it was all I had saved. I decided to get a friend to co-sign for a loan at the bank in order to have all the money I needed. The banker was happy to give me the $500. loan. 1971 Everything cost a whole lot less.
Cessna 150 was $15.00/ hr wet or $9.00/ hr dry. Instructor rate was $6./hr
6 weeks later...PPL.
As a pilot for a major US airline… this is just not true. I MANY friends who fly for various corporate flight departments.. and they make NO WHERE NEAR this.. this total bullshit.
thats awesome. I'm from Jamaica searching for flight schools and scholarships right now so hopefully I can live the dream like you one day
You're a great guy Thomas! I'm from another country and have recently found your channel, subscribed and watched quite a few of your videos! Good on you for the amazing videos, filling and life into an aviation world. I am currently in the airforce and planning to leave soon to start my career in the commercial flying world too! Hope to get in touch and meet you one day!
That’s so sick man glad I found your channel. I’m new in aviation 41 yrs old got in some trouble when I was younger but getting ready for my 1st class medical exam. 🤞
Love your channel man I’m from Rochester ny it’s upstate so not a very well known area for anything special lol I’m 37 and have a career but have always dreamed of doing what you do, would you recommend pilot institute that I see so much of on these advertisements if I’m starting out completely fresh? Ik the main thing to do first is get a discovery flight and hour 1 out of the way but I just seem kind of lost at putting together some kind of plan to move forward and what to expect I guess. If you see this message and have any tips for me it would be greatly appreciated!!! Keep doin you man its very exciting to watch good people succeed.
Must be some high flyer(s) willing to spend six grand to get to a Thanksgiving Day party and return in twelve hours window!
When I start making that pilot paycheck I would love to do this also, aviation is an awesome community to be a part of, I will definitely be helping some pilots that don’t have a lot and will help them keep that dream alive! Trying to finish my multi and it’s hard when you got other responsibilities, can’t wait to help some others I’ve been there!
I really want to get into aviation. So many genuine people and relationships you can.
Huge fan of this channel and the motivation you provide.
Helping Kyle find a job once he has his ratings is huge and a connection he may not realize how lucky he is to have.
Evdrytime I watch gear down videos. I really want to get into aviation. Have things I have to clear up financially and definitely have to hit a diet and the gym 😆😆
And how much cash do you need in order to become a business jet pilot. ? How many flying hours ? What type ratings ? Will you ever recover that money. ? 😅
Yeah I’m into that. True testament of the core of this fella 👍🏿 To be successful after the graft you put in to get there means you understand what it means to get a lift along the way. Big bout ya gezzer.
Awesome content man per usual! Currently wrapping up my commercial multi, really wanting to start in the corporate industry. Huge inspiration man thank you.
Super cool man! Congrats on getting this far!
I think it’s great that you helped out those guys on thanksgiving I’m looking into getting my license with my goal being commercial
Love your style man that’s how you do Aviation. If you need help or need another pilot let me know brother 🤙
Hahahaha 6K a day! That Gulfstream will coast you 6k an hour, if not more.
Mad respect. By far my favorite aviation channel.
How much you got to pay weekly fun flying lessons to become a commercial
Hey bro, how can I speak to you, I’m ready to work as a pilot?
Saw your video a year ago. Finally worked the nerve to go for a flight. I LOVED IT. So excited to do this!
Awesome man congratulations!!!!!!! 🎉
Where can I buy the flight bag? From uk?
You’re quickly becoming my favorite TH-cam aviation channel. It’s as if Bradley Nowell didn’t decide to be in a band and wanted to become a pilot instead 🤟🏼
Haha thanks man, that’s a real compliment 😁😁😁
Question, how much does the co-pilot make for the trip?
This is answered below 👇
Love at.
Good job man Maybe I meet you day and need your help in aviation
Turkey Michael Jordan!
Wow, man I love to see such great stuff from this channel! It’s an entire world of flying I’m not familiar with but I love the content! - A legacy airline pilot.
Love it! Reached out to you a few months ago right before I started my PPL journey at KFUL and currently at 42 hours and passed my written a few weeks back. Now I just have to knock out my two XC solo’s and a handful of hours for checkride prep and then schedule my checkride. Can’t wait to be at this point you’re at in the future. Keep the content coming brotha!
هل صحيح يجني الطيارون هذه المبالغ ؟
Curious question; do you choose your copilot or does the management company maintain a roster of available bodies to select from? Then I imagine there is a set daily rate for the copilot.
I own the management company. I do keep a roster, and I do pay my co-pilots whatever their day rate is as a contractor
The CFI is going straight to delta?!!!
Your auto throttle likes to lag the left lever a little bit.
Super nice of ya man to give back! Need more pilots like you who are super chill. When ya making your way to the east coast? I’m a 650TT CFI in NJ just building time to 1500
What are your rates + rental in NJ ?
Ahh we don’t head that way often. I usually airline out when we do lol
Top shelf guy you are man! I would love to be in a financial place to randomly do the same. Great stuff. Just being able to access you for networking would be infinitely valuable.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Good for you. Thanks for sharing.
How many people do you contract total?
I love the insight to this side of aviation. Everyone always talks about airlines but this looks like an exciting job! Working on my private now just passed the knowledge test.
Sheesh am I the only one paying $530 a lesson 🥶🥶
That is crazy what’s you’re school ?
Florida 🌴
That sounds excessive especially for florida
i paid $260 in delaware a few months ago and thought it was outrageous
Can you help me ??? I want my son to start. Would you mind talking to him ??? 🙏🙏🙏🙏 thank You if you have time!!! Love your Videos
Best option is to order the ebook and schedule a zoom call for he and I!
Great video! I can't wait until I start flight training in March!
Good luck with training! Hope to see u in the sky’s soon!
Congrats on living your best life! I'm corporate/contract pilot my self, been contracting for 17 year's.. Typed in the Falcon 2000 and 4 Citation Jets.. You can definitely make some decent money and have a great life... There's definitely more than airline flying. Nothing wrong with the airlines to be clear!
Whats a realistic annual salary hustling this?
Nice!!!
Thanks!
Currently flying the GIV PIC - 91/135, fresh .297, extensive (recent) Int'l exp. PHX based, 2wk on/2wk off rotation. Looking to further branch out the Networking for more Contract work. Happy to help out on availability.
I think I know where you work 👀 AT* and a lot of trips to Africa lol
You’re cool are you coming to the Fullerton Party Dec 7th? You should!!
Unfortunately I’ll be on the road. When I’m at home the last place I want to be lol
phone call to extend your cars warratny!
hahahahah
Happy Thanksgiving!! Gear Down,, I’m looking forward to checking out in your Arrow in my area
Awesome! Thank you! It’ll be there soon
If you make $6K can we assume the co-pilot makes roughly 60% of what you make?
Depends on his experience and what he’s billing. My copilots set their own pay rate
Super wholesome! Loved it as always Tommy
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you, I’m going to try to do a lot more of these types of video!
Aye happy thanksgiving. I have about 5 more months of A&P school and then plan to start pilot training. I’m 22 years old, AAS degree, so glad I chose the A&P route first after watching your videos.
Awesome man! Keep up the good work! 💪 happy holidays!
Happy thanksgiving GD! Much love from Colorado (APA) 🤙
Same to you! Thanks for watching!
That's awesome. Way to give back like that. Just ordered me a "What Notam?" shirt, thanks for the discount code!
Awesome! Thank you!
Damn I would love flight lessons. So good to see you giving back!
just curious. I am a paraplegic. So was wondering if you have ever got someone on a Gulfstream that is in a wheelchair?
Love these videos, keep it up! You’re an inspiration
I appreciate that!
Your channel has resparked my love of aviation.
Wow, thanks! That’s a huge complieknt
Compliment
11/23/23 video about lights? 👽
Soon
@@gear_downoh, yeah, you were gonna release that on thanksgiving!!!
Simple video with quality content man! Glad to see you paying it forward where you started. The video is a good example of the community you find on the ramp. Just dudes wanting to talk about flying.
That’s the truth! Thanks for watching this one! Cheers man!
awesome video regards from Bolivia Captain.
Thank you! Been to La Paz many times in the Gulfstream…. Very hard to breathe at that airport lol
Just out of curiosity, how much (range) would a copilot eran for this trip?
3-5000
I’d like to talk to you about how to and more importantly where to start to get into aviation… I don’t come from put together families & get credit score but my mental is suited for this challenge ! Any advice would be greatly appreciated my brother!💪🏾
I just found your channel and I've got to say I really enjoy the videos like this where you show in detail all the buttons and procedures. I am a rotorcraft pilot and I often wonder what it would be like in the private fixed wing world.... Keep up the great videos and god bless you and your passengers.
Thanks man! I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Hope you hit the subscribe button!
You know I did...@@gear_down
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...left seat. You see Tommy...I do watch your stuff.
Hahahhahah
@@gear_down Fly safe buddy. I am a retired professional pilot now, but I still fly for me. If you are making a stop in Fort Worth, Texas sometime...gimmie a heads up and I will meet you at Meacham Field.
Thank you for sharing the industry.😊
😂 Hahaha!! Looking good getting to the aircraft early before the trip and then taking off! Sweet!! Hahaha😊, when you landed at your destination and you guys were taxing you made me laugh. Haha😅!! I heared you, "No", at about 29:31, 😅😅 Well, the hotel room was cool. Being right there on the beach was nice!😊 That was cool uou made it home home at about 2:43am Thanksgiving early early morning!! Nice trip.
no fricken way, i do my flight training out of brown, used to live in imperial beach, i was just at ksdm yesterday
Love brown for customs. They’re the best
@@gear_down agreed, easiest border crossing into the states I’ve ever had
Love that!
I’m training in that same plane right now! 9964L
Hahah awesome man! Keep up the good work
Love your content! Biz-related newbie question re co-pilots: do you (as PIC/Captain) hire and/or pay them? or the plane's owner? or ...?
Great video as always! I just got a GoPro to start recording my flight lessons and document my journey, currently at 14 hours!
Gear down merch is absolutely sick
Thanks man!
You are such an inspiration to me. Your videos are amazing please keep up these videos. I hope to meet you one day. I have so many questions I want to ask you.
Thank you so much, order the ebook and schedule a time to zoom chat me!
@@gear_down I will be ordering this book very soon! I am a college student about to graduate but haven't had the support in my life to be a pilot until now. The money will be tough, but I will figure it out as I go. The opportunity to be able to talk with you and discuss your journey would be the best thing I could ask for.
Where are the v-neck tees for the aviatrix? Give us some love! Super nice of you to give back like that! The guys were turning red, so cute. Serious traffic on Wednesday. I had an IR flight lesson and was circling around at PDZ for a while. Wish I could've met you at OSH...next time.
I’ll put some up tonight!
We’ll see you there this year!
Good stuff
Appreciate it
Just wanted to drop a comment and say I landed my first two contract flights. I currently have a salaried flight position so this extra contract work will be a nice bonus. A 2 day trip followed by a 3 day trip shortly after.
Watching your content inspired me to go grind out my network and find contract work on top of my regular flight gig.
I wish the VA paid for pilot school, I probably would of been flying years ago!
wow. wish I could have met you. I spent my thanksgiving sleeping in my car. (got at least put up in a room for 2 nights by the local community). I got about 100 hours logged but I didn't finish and do my checkride because of $.
Idk why, but I love watching the auto-throttles do their thing. Maybe one day I'll jump into a cockpit.
I got a DWI wayyyyy back in 2009 when I was a dumb college kid. As I've come to understand, the FAA never forgets and I was under the limit of .15 so the AME would likely issue after getting background info from me on the incident but my initial concern was not being able to get into the majors. Now, after watching your channel I am just thinking of going private route and forgoing the majors altogether..
How did the $6000 break down? High end day rate for the 4 is $2000 per day. So two days makes sense…?
Watch the video 2 calendar days. 11.5 hours total. And I’m not sure who told you 2000 is the high end. Maybe a year or two ago, but my team bills at 2250-2500/day. My boss tossed on an extra 500/day due to it being the day before & morning of thanksgiving. If you’re working for 2000/day as a captain on a 4, there’s something wrong with you, you don’t know how to negotiate, or both.

I’m just asking a question friend, no attitude needed. I’m glad you’ve found a lucrative niche for yourself. I’m curious, do you carry liability insurance when you’re in the left seat?@@gear_down
Great video! Need more content like this of procedures and everything!
Thanks! Will do!
May I ask how long ago did you start earning this amount? I know in another video you said you used to do 700$ and now it’s 5k. Also was it a gradual increase or did it like jump up several times? Cool videos, very informative, thanks
