Incredible. Straight pompano clinic son. As a Georgia boy that’s surf fished for Florida whiting every summer for years, I just learned more about catching Pompano than I have learned in the last quarter century trying to figure it out myself.
Nice, informative interview. I just started surf fishing seriously about a year ago so in the early stages of learning the game. I learned about circle hooks on the charter boats I've been on & I'm finding that they work all around, no need to set the hook. The fish will hook themselves & this is very true with a rod in a holder. liked & subbed.

Here's a story for you. I went to bed last night watching this video in preparation of going to do some beach fishing with my wife on Veteran's Day today. We got out to the inlet and there were a few, but not too many people fishing. As I was checking out what was happening, I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't dreaming, but there he was, Old Fishman himself. He had four of those 13ft. poles set up in front of that same beach cart and before I could get out and go talk to him, he was reeling one in. I stayed and talked to him for about 20 minutes, telling him about watching this video the night before and he caught several nice, real nice pompano in that time. He is just like he is in this video in real life. A genuinely nice guy who just loves to fish and talk fishing. I can say this, everything you've ever heard about his pompano skills is true.
Good tips. It would be nice to have a concise interview, well thought out, just giving straight forward tips, baits, how to rig and when to fish, without the extra fluff. He's a super nice guy for sure.

I'm still in Jax, still go fishing all the time. Mainly like to go to the Flagler, Ormond beach area to surf fish. Also take a lot of trips to the Juno beach area and fish the pier there for snook. That or go on the party boats. Definitely a lot of fun to catch some more exotic stuff, at least compared to Jax.
I do not use a shock leader. I use 30lb braid and I use 20-25lb flurocarbon for the rig. I tend to surf fish where there are a lot of drum and Sheephead so I use heavier than Larry.

I’m from Jacksonville, and I’ve ran into the sinker guy down there in St Aug, and he recommended me to the guy who makes the metal spikes. I live in Tampa now, but I drove 3 1/2 hrs to his house just to pick up my spikes… nice guy! Can’t remember his name, but I thought it was Spencer.
Does Larry use any shock leader to prevent the sinker from snapping his line while casting? It seems like he uses 15 lb mono for the main line, as well as the dropper rig. How does he not snap his line with no shock leader?
The times I’ve been with him I didn’t notice a shock leader. I use 20lb braid myself. The rods he has have a lot of whip action so the rod loads up nice when he throws. I go up to 20-25lb leader when there are lots of bluefish around

Mainly circle hooks but when using a Sputnik , even with j hooks the fish get hooked on their own when they pull against the Sputnik.
