Thanks for showing the morticians’s rig set up! It answered questions I had about another rig I was getting ready to use. I’m new to saltwater fishing after doing some as a young boy in the northeast. After spending 40 yrs away with me, my southern born wife retired and we decided to return her to South Carolina choosing an active adult community in Myrtle Beach. There’s a fishing club for off shore. I enjoy fishing around the intracoastal waterway, inlets and now am ready to sit my old bones down on the beach to spend time with my wife surf fishing! So, this is perfect timing! Again, thanks for this rig and “pre-thanks” for what I’ll learn from watching more of your videos! I’m in need of a couple surf rods so, I’ll have to go back, and rewatch to get the name of your favorite rod to check it out. Tight lines!

Thank you. I have learned more from 2 or 3 of your videos than all of the other surf fishing videos combined. I have moved to St Mary’s after fishing on the Gulf the last many years at St George Island and Pensacola. I am quickly learning this is a different ball game on this coast. I cannot get away with the rigs and equipment I used over there. These videos are very helpful in my adjustments. I hate to bite the bullet buying new equipment (I had to do some changes for the boat rods and reels and terminal tackle already) but I do want to be properly equipped. I know I will not catch fish like I did over there without some changes.

I've been using this rig for the last 6 months or so. It's great! Just caught a 23 inch blue catfish with this exact rig a couple days ago while creek fishing. Tying my own leaders is what I prefer. I like to be able to keep my leaders to a minimum with terminal tackle. And this is the rig to do so. I'm not a fan of crimps at all either. I do have a few Breakaways rigs and I like them a lot, especially for distance casting. I've been able to incorporate the mortician rig with a breakaway IMP clip for my sinker, by using a loop knot instead the Snell knot on the hook. The loop knot allows for an easy attach to the IMP. I use both rigs a lot. Thank you so much for this vid. I came back, just to comment. Thanks A lot! Tight Lines!!

I tie one bobber stopper knot using .7mm Stretch Magic line (from Hobby Lobby or Michael's) instead of the figure 8 knot ABOVE the bottom snood. When I'm done for the day I can "hook" both of my hooks together to secure them for travel. The bobber stopper knot allows me to slide the bottom snood up the leader so I can connect the 2 hooks and then slide the bobber stopper knot down to put some tension on the 2 snood lines so the hooks stay connected during travel. I choose to keep the figure 8 knot below both snoods so that when I am reeling in a fish (or 2 fish) the fish will not get damaged by a wire on my sputnik sinker nor get tangled with my 2nd fish on those rare occasions when I double up.

Awesome video, but now I am questioning which to use? Bruno-Double Drop or Mortician? I am a landlubber from TN who loves to come to the beach and surf fish on vacation. I have only fished from the Mayport Jetties (when I was in the Navy - late 80's Sheephead heaven back then), Myrtle Beach, SC, and Sebastian beach (not the pier aka Zoo). I am now planning an RV surf fishing in April with stops at Tybee Island, Hanna Park, Sebastian, and back up to Jekyll Island. I Love Pompano and Whiting, but have never hooked a Red in the surf (dream catch). Sorry long back story, now the question....... 4 Surf rods and I only know Sebastian, do I fish 2 Bruno rigs with floats for Pomp/Whit (sand fleas and fish bites) and 2 with Mortician with Crab knuckle to take a shot at a Red? And, do you use floats with your Mortician? Always heard Fish finder rig was better for Reds. Any help appreciated, and I really dig your sputniks and vids.

I worry that the figure 8 knots will weaken the 40lb test enough that a hard cast with a 5 oz sinker will break it at the knot. Have you ever experienced this? I have read quite a few posts by FM, I agree he is a genius, but a little hard to follow. In one of his posts he mentioned a 80 or 100 lb test leader. That would solve the problem. He also employes some very sophisticated clip downs that I have experimented with without much success. He speaks of placing a pomp rig 600' out.

8 month later... I’ll still sustain the same thing.
How can be possible to a guy with common sense ( who makes good sinkers) support such a crappy , good for nothing rig?
Because he looks thru the keyhole of the fishing world.
There is a better fishing, sir....but you have to work.
Is simple, but not that easy making better rigs.
But it takes a different approach to fishing.
“ The most important bait is knowledge” ....
Good luck! ( you will need it wit that rig , or God providing tons of fish around you!)
    Regards.
    Fred.
