The Defender’s suspension will not lower when the trailer plug is connected. Plus you can turn off auto-access mode in the settings of the vehicle if you like.
Great content as always I have the new mux and fitted Berima diesels throttle controller it was under $300 . Honestly an excellent addition for towing much more responsive. And with a proper tune I have seen amazing fuel and power gains. Yes I understand you shouldn’t have to do this but it really changes the whole car
Paul is easily the best car reviewer I've seen. He does such a thorough job.
Thank you!
Likeable chap but, HE HAS A TEAM.
Must have been a hell of an effort to do all this testing so meticulously. Thanks for the effort so that we can get the such thorough results.
Thanks for watching!
I've always found this channel to be sooooo underrated. All your tests are always so practical and well elaborated and explained.
The Patrol is trully everything you need. A beautiful vehicle, a bedroom, a fast car, a towing beast, a meeting room. Someone should install a shower in the boot to make it a real house on wheels.
And even the same technology as my grandmas lounge room! Circa 2000s. How people still buy them with that type of dogshit interior and infotainment blows my mind.
@@NicholasCox85 Because those parameters are secondary at best to people who actually buy the car. The Patrol's hardware is awesome, at a very good price.
@@NicholasCox85because all the interior and infotainment is upgradeable. You have to bear in mind it was released over a decade ago and is getting discontinued next year.
But the car itself is absolutely phenomenal and ridiculously cheap compared to a 300 and for only a few grand you can have the aftermarket industry replace all the infotainment, instrument cluster, steering wheel and wood grain etc and still have thousands upon thousands of dollars for fuel.
@@NicholasCox85 my 62 eats my wifes landcruiser 300... who the hell is looking at the infotainement when your driving??? the patrols works flawlessly, the bluetooth etc, you can hey google everything--- the car is the best tow rigg ive ever owned and ive owned most, your mind must be easily blown
The Defender access height suspension lowering can be easily turned off in the car’s settings so not an issue at all
Sorry about the confusion! Off-road test will be published later this week. We had to switch the publish order of the videos. Make sure you are subscribed with the bell icon to be notified when it goes live.
LDV did not want to do the test, no surprises there!
Just good for tradies towing trailers. And shitty work sites
Drove a rental LDV recently… worst driving experience
@@RanjivKapuge what were you expecting? A bmw?
Haha I agree!
It would have come last. Best to save face now than face ridicule later on 😂
The Defender’s suspension will not lower when the trailer plug is connected. Plus you can turn off auto-access mode in the settings of the vehicle if you like.
He was totally clueless with the land rover product in that regard.. no idea.. making it look bad. Not to mention how handy the air suspension can be when hooking up trailers etc particully if you have issues with a jockey wheel etc
@@dave216dx Well hes a damn sight better than most American reviews "HEHE BRITISH CAR BAD"
i think its more about reversing under the swan neck, opening the door to get out and THEN having the defender drop down and make contact
afaik there is no exception for that scenario regarding auto access height
@@dave216dxgood thing people actually towing don’t use euro crap
It would be interesting to get some 90s model 4wds and do the same the test to see how far we’ve come and in some case not come lol
If patrol Nissan had updated it's interior like it did in some markets , there was no need to buy a landcruiser
dw an all new y63 is coming out this year for the global market. it must be easier for them to build a new model according to markets like Australia than update and convert the Y62 which was primarily developed for LHD markets hence the holdout with the Y62
But Land cruiser is goated machine ✨️
Paul, Paul, Paul, I speak as a truck driver of 25 years! Who the hell would tow a heavy trailer using cruise control? I use cruise control in a truck occasionally, in a car often on a freeway, but not when I’m in my suv towing a caravan ect.
That patrol is a beast
Thank you so much for all your efforts in making these tests realistic, educational and above all, entertaining ❤
Thank you!
Great video thanks Paul. I have the V6 Ranger Wildtrak and have been towing a 3t caravan for several months (10,000kms) I blew a turbo (a bearing failure) after 1700kms. Ford NZ looked after us with not only fixing it quickly but paying for our accommodation while we waited for the repair. Still love the truck, great for towing. I get 16lt per 100km while hooked up. If I was to pick a SUV to fit into a budget it would be the Everest but if I had a larger budget it would have been the LC before watching this video, now it would be the defender. Great job.
Man the effort Paul makes to compare these 4X4. people dont understand what it takes to do so. And yet, they keep suggesting you could have done this, that and more.
Very amazing job there Paul, thanks for taking time and bringing this to us.
Great comparisons, thank you for such a diverse and in depth review.
Nearly 2 hours video but watched it at 1.25× speed.
Not a single second of this video felt boring for me, absolutely brilliant. The making, the camera angles everything was exceptional.
Well done sir!
Excellent video. I'd love to see this done for older SUVs. It would be great to build up the database of results.
The patrol might be ageing but that vehicle is awesome at towing so stable great power had a ranger be for no comparison V8 power of the patrol unreal
To me the overall winner is us the viewers 😂.
But on a serious note thank you Paul for providing us with a very comprehensive test, like I've seen other channels do this and the off-road test especially the off-road test, I've seen many Australian channels doing tests to find out the better off-road vehicle and they claim to have off-road experts that will tell us which car is better off-road but the don't even show the cars during the test they just show a 5 second video of the car and then the "off-road expert" comes and say why X car is better but we never see the car during the test some nonsense test that just shouldn't exist.
Thanks for watching!
Great job Paul, nothing worthwhile you didn't cover so much preparation went into this test, love how the Patrol is still up there in all areas considering its age.
Brilliant video
So much effort put in to achieve the results
Well done to all involved
Awesome video guys! You go above and beyond with how thorough you are with testing!
Thanks James! :)
Some of these 4 pot diesel SUV's might've made 100kmh if you stuck it in to manual mode and let it rev out a little more, def saw it in the Fortuner, Pajero sport and the MUX.
We had an Audi SQ7 diesel when we towed our van ......now THAT was a great tow vehicle.
My overall tow vehicle: the evergreen *Nissan Y62 Patrol* , worth every penny for its price, on-& off-road capability & performance, even though more than 10 years after its 2010 introduction 👍
Love the video. I absolutely love my Patrol Y62 towing 3.1 tonne with ease average fuel sits around ltrs/100
It’s a beast and makes towing an easy job!
Your fuel consumption is ??
on the last 12k trip averaged 23.8 towing 3.1tonne
@@markandkim66
I would choose the Patrol. It’s cheaper and has amazing towing, off-roading and on road capabilities.
Not all of us live in GCC and can afford that fuel bill...
@@Gdsamplify if you can afford a patrol fuel shouldn’t be a problem.
Yep and it is 30k cheaper than a Land Cruiser, that’s about 10 years worth of fuel
@@Gdsamplify when towing on hwy it uses less fuel what u talking about
@@GdsamplifyOk spend another 20 to 40k on the Cruiser or LR and save a couple of bucks a week on fuel. 🤔 That’s smart thinking.
Always been waiting for a test like these.❤😂🎉.I love it
Love the effort you put into these tests and the honest opinion and comments you make. Still working my way through all the cars! Quite a long video.
This is so amazing, almost 2 hours of hardwork from you guys
The Everest Platinum has a huge moon roof and Bang and Olufsen sound system and toe sensing boot opener that Paul did not mention but with so much kit, he gave an thorough explanation.
Thanks for the effort u put in to make this comparison
Another excellent video review of SUV's.
For the vehicles that weren't available will you do separate video reviews of them later on when they become available?
Great video. Would be good to see a table of the GVM, GCM and payload as measured as actual tare can vary so much from the spec sheet.
Hell yeah. It's mentioned in closing, so i thought it would be listed somewhere.
Wow the Patrol still impresses today, and soooo underrated and the winner (for me). People think it's heavy on fuel and what not, but don't do the math to see you can drive like 250K km before getting to the price of its competitors.
And it comes with a free Missus so who needs a good reversing camera?
But seriously, how people buy a LC over the Patrol astounds despite its obvious ageing in this company.
@@sbGOMHave you seen the middle eastern spec? That patrol is lexus lx600 rival. Landcruiser doesnt stand a chance.
my favorite here is the breaking test and the hill climb, its fun looking at the cars while braking hard and see how it woggles and shakes!
A great effort and I can't imagine the planning that had to go into this. Would be good to see carrying capacity after connecting the tow rig
That defender really put a smile on his face😄. Land Rover defender is the winner for me out of all the suvs, it really is a good package
Kudos for all the work. Watched from start to finish
That's a big effort, great job!
Great review. Just wondering if you put the trailer dimensions on to the Defender 110 infotainment, it helps the suspension to adjust to your load for better towing. I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. Looking forward to the next reviews.
Patrol all day! It's a BEAST! I love mine. I didn't buy mine to worry about fuel prices ha-ha
Love the Paj Sport and the Patrol, but I was also really surprised with how the Fortuner performed and "felt". That recent engine boost really made a world of difference.
Good comparison of different suv’s Paul. I’ve a pajero sport and happy with it. Wacthing from 🇳🇿Waiting for your off road videos.
V6 Ranger has been such a disappointment. Plus tons of issues.
Please educate us on the “tons of issues”?
Yes would love to know
Correct, v6 ranger is an abomination
@@catchawakeup6411plenty of news articles out there. Google it.
100%, we were very disappointed with ours and sold it and purchased a Y62 Patrol
Loving these longer test comparison videos.
More to come!
Enjoyable vid - and such detail and hard work! Not surprised the Defender won. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.
Great comparison, very complete. There are few videos of this type, and none is so detailed. Waiting for the Off Road tests.
Enjoy 😁 👉 th-cam.com/video/h0Rn0CyHh2g/w-d-xo.html
I only just realised where your test track is! Lang Lang Proving Ground! Good to see it still being put to use as it’s truly a piece of Australian manufacturing history.
Fascinating test, well done. I have been pulling trailers for most of my life as a farmer now in my late 70s. I once owned a VW Touareg V10 5ltr diesel which was excellent on the road & usless on the land. I also owned a couple of Subarus Forresters which were brilliant all round 2ltr diesels.
I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque.
One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I'd love to tow the Dyna trailer with my Skoda, but we don't have any in Ireland.
Eyyy its here! Looking forward to the offroad part of the mega test!
Coming soon!
Amazing review.
Some feedback but not for this video: really love the acceleration and speedo view in your normal reviews down the back straight of your test track. However, there are some reviews of late that have had it missing.
Would really love to have that in all reviews as it is a really good way of comparing all the cars in terms of power and speed at the top end. Even the slower vehicles.
Other than that, love this channel.
Superb idea and event. Well done, Mate!!!
Very Detailed Video Mate!! Thanks
Great review! I think the rear axle load capacity on the defender rules it out for big loads
I have a Y62 and love that unit more than anything I've ever owned, but this video has raised 2 points for me.
Firstly, I'm surprised at the SAG factor, because it's a common feeling among Y62 owners that they NEED stiffer rated springs or airbags to tow a half decent load, yet in this test it performed very well in that respect.
2nd is that the Defender shocked me with its performance, and purchase price and drive satisfaction aside, I'd happily concede that it's a better tow vehicle. Very impressed.
What a great comparison for us it is the best I have ever seen. I am primarily interested in fuel efficiency at constant load eg towing at highway conditions, so, If you were to do another test. I would like to see a test done with the dyno trailer at 3 different loads at 100 and 80 km/hr . and to record the fuel usage when towing your loaded trailer under real world conditions.
Thanks Paul, very interesting and comprehensive.
I thought I heard mention you had run a 4WD test with the same vehicles.
Have you? I couldn't find it. (Only the medium SUVs)
Please pass on a link or setup a new test 😊
Good coverage and detail explained
fantastic stuff guys covered everything these video a hard to do a lot of work involved so well done really good info there..
Thank you!
relatable cars and reviews. Your channel does this well
Pretty funny that 0-100 of 12 seconds is slow, I've been towing my entire business around for 10 years in a ute that NEVER even gets to 100kmh 😅
Hi Paul - I must say I was very surprised about the difference’s between the 300 series cruiser and the Lexus , on the point of both of the fords , with the 10 speed auto you can actually lock out the higher gears which would help whilst towing , another great vid with great content 👍
There is a couple using a Defender as a tow vehicle for the big lap on TH-cam. As good as it is towing the reliability is a real let down, especially for remote travel.
That is one instance, plenty others with no issues, also seen lots of "couples" doing laps with the LC300 with all sorts of issues, oil usage, injector issues due to DPF burns etc.
"Reliabity" is Tupperware Toyota Bullsh$t
We have a 2018 MUX and a reasonably newish caravan, and the fuel consumption is actually pretty good but the tank at 60L is too small. We upgraded to a 112L tank a few months ago and has increased our range by over 200km. I honestly think any 4WD that tows 3 or more tons should come with at least a 100L tank.
You added 52 litre and range increased with 200km? Meaning on the initial tank it was covering almost 250km. Something is wrong i guess
Or a bigger battery!
@@aaronbutao9543that is when the mux is towing the caravan. The fuel consumption is about 26L/100 km .
I love this type of testing. Really good job. Eventually please combine all your SUV tests (hill, towing, braking, etc.) into an overall report and preference ranking. Maybe have more than one reviewer give an opinion as well.
Excellent video keep up the good work 👏
Really enjoyed the testing
Excellent work mate
That thumbnail with your face is hilarious, Paul 😂
Did your Defender testing vehicle have the tow pack? If you enter the trailer dimensions it changes the suspension and provides additional features.
Thanks, this is excellent!
Fantastic review Paul. Appreciate the significant effort to pull this off! Would love to see you do a similar test series for the Yank trucks that can potentially tow bigger loads - Ram 1500/2500, Silverado 1500/2500 and the New Ford F-150…
Seems to me on a value proposition Patrol wins hands down, what do you think
Love this one!! Good indepth viewing
did anyone notice the defender throwing in the centre and rear difflock onroad? How bizarre! Great video!
Great review. Thank you 🙏
Awsome work video and idea ..loved it
Thank you! Cheers!
From USA here, would have loved to see LC 200 with the old 5.7. Own a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 and 4.30 rear end, just pulls for days. Even with an 8000lb RV behind it pulled very well up the Poconos going up the mountains. Overall great Video!
great comprehensive test, pls include the Touareg on your next one.
Great overview. But what would be great n informative, is that to plug in a OBD2, so that could monitor all thr parameters such as engine oil temp, coolant temp, n gbox temp.
Had my eye on a Pajero Sport GSR, not so sure anymore. I certainly wouldnt be towing with these loads, but there are some other issues with power and braking that are giving me second thoughts. Even with a 10yr warranty. Great test, thanks for the amazing breakdowns.
I tow 2.8t with a Triton. The 8sp would be an advantage I think. Having said all that, power wise the Triton copes fine at typical NZ towing speeds of 90km/hr. It is working when you push it or there are steep hills. We tested the PS and disliked the soft suspension. Some better shocks I think would make a world of difference.
I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I have a folding Avan which will probably weigh about 1100 kg with some payload. It should perform better than the combo in the video.
excellent work 👏👏
Hey Paul! Can you do similar tests on small family crossover vehicles (not towing obviously) but their economy, practicality etc.
Simply amazing 🎊 great job thank you
Yes this is probably my favourite part of the “series” that this is
So detailed! Brillant.
great video mate
These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.
I believe one of the most interesting channel on TH-cam here. 👍👍
You guy .....your just spot on with what I want to know
Дуже професійний змістовний тест. Дякую.❤
Great video and very fair, 300 Cruiser and D300 Defender both did quite well, nice to see the Defender take the win, it trully is a Jack of all trades 4x4. The Auto lowering can be switched off in settings via the Pivo Pro centre screen 👌🏽👍🏽 Thanks for the vid 🙌🏽
I was a bit surprised at the result but as you say it is the jack off all trades fair and square.
@@fawshaw3361 for sure 😉👍🏽
I think people avoid the Defender not because it isn't good, but rather the reputation of the brand. When we looked at getting our car last year, Land Rover just didn't make the list based on brand reputation criteria (a few others in the same boat).
It would be great to compare them again after 200,000 kms and compare total costs over that period.
@@8U5HM8 thats a shame, awesome vehicle
Great Video. One thing to add to the video would have been reversing, Maneuverability and vision from mirrors with larger trailers. I currently own a D300 110 Defender and tow a car on a trailer regularly. Have to agree with the comments. I've never had an issue with the tow hitch hitting the rear wheel though. A Handy point with the Air suspension for long tail trailers, being able to lower the Car (raising the rear of the trailer) when negotiating steep approach angles to reverse up steep drive ways. This is priceless. Prior to the Defender, I towed with a Skoda Kodiaq RS (diesel version) and I have to say it towed even better than the Defender (particularly in reversing maneuvers) Vision from the side mirrors was excellent and torque and economy for a little 4 Cylinder it was amazing even accelerating when overtaking up some of the inclines of the Hume Highway back from Golborne into Sydney and an average fuel economy under for 10L/100km round trip Sydney --> Marulan and back. Great Video.
For quick engagement to AWD on the fly and/or back to 2WD with the Pajero Sport and Triton, it's best to try not to accelerate and use steering input,(Off centre) . I've found this happens a lot with my Triton.. Could perhaps just be the torque sensing not allowing the front end to connect effectively.
The new landcruiser Prado won’t have a V6 I believe, it will have the same 2.8L diesel and a few petrol/hybrid options. Interesting to see that the Prado is allowed to tow 3500kg in the Netherlands
I expected that from the Rexton, but the huge surprise is how woeful the Pajero Sport is, even with no load on. Wow. And there are so many on the road, surprisingly.
Another thing to note with these tests, you have a 2800kg van on the back, but haven't loaded up the car with the family, luggage, etc.... There is no way the Pajero Sport could tow 3100kg, especially with anything in the car.
Hi Great test and nice engineering approach. I have found it very difficult to find information such as the GVM, payload, GCM etc for many vehicles. It doesn't seem to be easily findable on the manufacturers' websites. Are you able to somehow advise the information for each of the 4WDs that you tested. This is an important safety issue, and I think the industry doesn't take it seriously.
Theee most comprehensive testing thank you. I wish we had an american equivalent for the cars in out market.
