This won the Grammy for best duet in 1988. It took Aretha’s career back up there especially in the UK. They really liked one another. When George did his “Faith” tour in Detroit, she showed up n they performed this live on stage. I remember he had a red handkerchief on his head. She was George’s idol. He was scared to death as he was so young. He let someone else produce it as he didn’t want to outshine her. I personally think they were both terrific. JMO
And, Jimmy..George had just turned *23* years old at this point ..Can you imagine the confidence he had..and awe he felt...to be singing with an icon? Because he was an icon-in-the-making...
This is such a dope song. This gave Aretha her first UK number 1 and I think her second ever USA billboard hot 100 number 1 after a huge gap.
This was a major marketing ploy. George was coming out of mega pop group Wham!. The group was the most commercially successful pop group of the 80s, however they were seen as bubblegum pop. Aretha needed a huge hit - and bigger commercial presence.
George Michael, by becoming the first white male to duet with her got his respectability from the musical press and Aretha got her massive hit by duetting with the hottest singer on the rise. It was a win, win situation, masterminded by Clive Davies (then Head of Arista records).
Call it a marketing ploy or what you will, but their chemistry together overwhelms both the track and the video. They’re obviously having a great time together. And it sounds and it shows. It’s brilliant.

Yes it is indeed an homage to the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell song Ain’t No Mountain High Enough which is why they included those black and white snippets of MG and TT singing.
George Michael was a international super star with a good voice with so much range
From what I understand the version we hear George Michael sing in this song is his FIRST TAKE when recording this song. Anyone who knows about making music and recording vocals (punching in, etc.) knows that singing the song through in one take is INSANELY TALENTED!!!

George was so nervous to sing with Aretha. Beautiful Gorge and the Diva Aretha. One of my favorite songs and the best duo ever from two of the most talented singers ever❤
This was George Michael's first release after going solo from Wham. And yes it won a Grammy. He was such an amazing artist he wrote, produced, preformed all his music. And did some of the best cover music. He said he never did a cover song he thought was already perfect. May he RIP miss you Mr.George Michael

One of my personal favorites of George Michael was “blame it on the sun” with Ray Charles.
Aretha loved George. She requested he write and produce her next album. He declines as he was such an admirer of Aretha and he felt strange having to tell her what to do. After all he was all but 21-22 at the time.
