Great video mate, you did not look a happy chappy.....and i wouldn't be either if i was woken up from a long lie to fix my own boiler 😢 the condition of your boiler considering how long it hasn't been touched for just shows how decent a Vaillant really is! It was great to see you teaching your son too 😊
YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Where was this video when I needed it last week Friday evening? Took the old diverter out and water started spewing out because the vessel was flat and full of water. Got the PCB wet, water everywhere on the floor. EV is the first thing I check from now on. It's so weird seeing this video 2 days after it happened.
And this video was filmed in January I think... I flipped a coin on which video to put out last week and the expansion vessel video won because it needed less editing. :-) I do always, always pump a vessel if I drain a boiler. Saves a lot of PCBs.
Great to see a real world engineer under pressure and showing this industry is not an easy one. Unfortunately that’s why I replace the whole diverter valve. ( (£160 )
Ive got the same boiler. 2008, just had the second diverter changed in that time. Nothing else has gone wrong with it. Ive done a sec HE clean with spirit of salts 2 times now. I was thinking it might need changing, but the DV has sorted it out so all ok again. 17 yo April 2025

You can get some pliers not sure on what they are actually called that will snap the two tabs on the insert and then just pull it straight out. Great idea with putting a gland on end as that is point of failure.
@HeatingGeek not sure if mechanics use them for some hose clamps. Might be handy for the clamps on the duo tec condensate hose, they can sometimes be tricky.
How I remove the old diverter cartridge is with a slotted screwdriver break the 2 lugs that holds old cartridge in position then spray with WD40 then pull out with long nose pliers simple 2 mins not as you need the old part anyway
Dude I think you are a pukka engineer but that bit of kit makes replacing diverter cartridges so long winded, you’d be so much better off using the long nosed pliers with the 2 lugs on so you can just pop the 2 on the cartridge dead easy and just pull out the cartridge with some long nose pliers and the jobs a gooden😊
Hi, can you please help me. I have a bit older model - TurboTec Plus VUW SOE 202/3-5. I have a problem for many years now, every winter when i turn on the heating. So, sometimes (not always) when thermostat turns on the heating, boiler starts with a rattling noise. Then, to stop it, i just open water in the sink for a second and that's it. I found this video on YT (th-cam.com/video/H4RPqZ_arEs/w-d-xo.html) where guy says the problem is in diverter valve. What do you think, is this the problem or maybe something else (pump?). If the problem is diverter do i need to replace it completely or i can fix it? Thank you.
@@HeatingGeek Thx. for the reply. Yeah, i was searching for the solution and many people say it's a diverter problem. I really don't know anything about boilers but as i'm learning i realized that diverter is used to "divert" water for heating or for hot tap water (depending on whether tap water is open or not). I just don't understand why would valve make noise? I'd expect noise coming from the water pump or fan, not the valve, but it seems it's really the valve.
The noise is probably the boiler overheating because the diverter isn't moving across properly. So it stops water flow and the boiler overheats. Check out the temperature on the boiler when it makes noise and when it stops. See if the temperature goes high when it's noisy.
@@HeatingGeek hm, i will check that, but this noise happens randomly when thermostat activates the boiler/heating. So, let's say the boiler is activated 20 times without any noise, but then one time it will activate with a humming/rattling noise. This noise will stop only if you open a tap or wait until the thermostat turns off the boiler.
@@orcalator Maybe your TRVs (if you have them) are all closing down after long running times and causing low water circulation through the boiler. Try and turn 1 TRV fully on when it's making the noise and see if it stops. :-)
WHO the Heck Installs a heatpump with 10mm copper? How is that even working … most heat pumps need bigger sizes due to the high flow rates .. I don’t know any heatpump where the flow and return connected form outside to the inside unit less than 35mm it’s just not going to run efficiently
New build houses in the UK need to be heat pump ready.... But the heating systems are still put in in 10mm plastic pipe! I was ranting about that ;-) Do you do heat pump install?
@@HeatingGeek hi Oli, thanks für the answer. Yes I do a lot of heat pump installs but I can’t seem to understand why people would do it with 10mm. It just not gonna work.
