    Man these do sound great. After hearing all the “you need to record drums in a nice room” advice, I almost bailed out of trying to record my kit. Thanks for the confidence booster.

      Moving blankets, fitted with ringlets and hung from a ceiling will cheaply improve any room acoustics. Just make sure to leave a small space (2-4 inches) between the walls and blankets. Don't let the blankets touch the walls.

    • @johannjohann6523
      @johannjohann6523 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can start off with a few blankets, not getting what you hoped for acoustically, then add more blankets. You shouldn't have to cover every wall completely. Space between blankets is okay.

      If you have a bad room try to use more close mics.
      With a good room you can use more room mics

    Hey Jeff, love this video. I just got a Gear4Music SubZero 8 mic pack, that also came with the appropriate stands and cables all for under £300. At the same time I got a Beringher multi channel interface, also for under £300. I’ve used all the mics into logic just like you have and you have managed to get a much better sound, I have similar limitations in terms of sound too. This video has inspired me to step back, think about mic placement and start again to get a fuller, warmer, more natural drum sound that retains punch, wish me luck haha!

  • @feinkevi
    @feinkevi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you! The sound going into the mic is far more important than anything else in the chain. How to get a great recorded drum sound: 1. Practice your drumming, a lot 2. Get a really nice kit & cymbals. 3. Spend as much time as you need tuning & figuring out any dampening and eliminating all the weird buzzes and resonance. Spend hours on it before hitting record if you have to. You got a basic but super usable and realistic drum sound with two entry level mics. Nice work.

I have been recording for drums for 10 years now and i can say when i first started i was recording in a small airplane hanger and i was new to recording, and i was getting great sounds . Im getting ready to go back to acoustic drums from an electric set and I have to say this inspired me to come at it from a more simplistic approach . Thank you for this perfect timing

    This is pretty informative. I think it's great that you're able to get such a great sound with a pretty budget interface and affordable mics. Additionally, I've been playing drums for a very long time but my focus has always been keys and brass. Recently I've heard how cheesy the cymbals sound during performances and the fact that you mentioned acquiring higher quality cymbals really drove home that fact for me.

    Superb ! What a great drum sound from only two mics,you could definitely teach a thing or two to so called trained sound engineers. Because of the social distancing/lockdown I've had an engineer remotely mixing a track I originally recorded back in October for an artist,this guy managed to make me sound like a machine by using samples on my snares and kick. I wasn't pleased to say the least,numerous instructional emails and 5 mixes later I finally sound like me!! Point is some engineers over complicate things,what you've done here a perfect example of considered mixing !!

    Just discovered your channel. GREAT content, fills, etc. This video is also superb. AT2020 as a single overhead, and the kick mic. Perfect-sounding kit, with headphones or gaming speakers which is usually how I listen to TH-cam videos.... kit sounds phenomenal, cymbals (of course... and I fully agree cymbals are the most important part of the overall sound). Flawless, man.

    There is one advantage your storage unit has against many other rooms of similar size. Those thin metal walls are a lot like being in a car. The reason so many people use the car stereo as a benchmark is that the low frequencies pass through the thin walls rather than echo around inside. You get a more natural balanced low end without needing bass traps. Great work man!

    For anyone who realized in this video that their next purchase needs are cymbals, understand each brand makes hundreds of unique sounding cymbals. Zildjian alone makes bright brilliant cymbals, dark earthy cymbals, absolutely trashy fx and china cymbals and everything inbetween. The sound difference between a Zildjian A Custom Crash and a K Custom Dark crash is night and day.
    Nothing kills me more then walking into a studio/rehearsal area, the guy says "Don't worry, they're Zildjians." Just to sit down a full set of ZBTs.
    Zildjian makes bottom barrel cymbals, AND high end professional quality cymbals. Shop around, do some research before buying anything.

    • @JeserNoob
      @JeserNoob 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just wanna say that at the end of the day if you can’t make any cymbal sound good you gotta step your game up. Also there are people out there that truly can’t stand b20 cymbals and don’t mind “cheaper” b8 alloy’s like ZBT’s and B8’s. It truly is what you like that matters and if you can make it work for you.

    • @callanc3925
      @callanc3925 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeserNoob The thing is, cymbals are the least adjustable aspect to recording. You can tune and mute drums, you can add acoustic foam and furniture to the room, you can practice to get a better drummer, you can eq the mics, but you cant really do anything to improve cymbals. There is a night and day difference between high quality professional cymbals and even mid range let alone beginner cymbals

    • @JeserNoob
      @JeserNoob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      itsC0ll0n yeah that’s the thing I used to see it as that too but really music is so subjective that something I might love to death would just be absolute noise to someone else and that’s what makes it so diverse. So while I won’t go buying any MCS’s or PST 5’s I can see how someone else would be perfectly fine with that. Plus that line is blurring with the new lines like the Zildjian i’s and S’s

    • @SeanLaMontagne
      @SeanLaMontagne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeserNoob
      I actually bought a crash from the new Sabian XSR line. I got a 17" Concept Crash for hardly $80 and it sounds just as good as something from the Zildjian A Custom line. And the brilliant finish is pretty hot too.
      Affordable good sounding cymbals are out there, and yes zildjian, Sabian, and all the big companies are working on better budget cymbals

    • @GaryHighFruit
      @GaryHighFruit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "The sound difference between a Zildjian A Custom Crash and a K Custom Dark crash is night and day."
      You just named my cymbal. I have a 14" Zildjian A Custom, and I thought you gave me the answer to why I don't like the cymbal. But then Sean said:
      " I got a Concept Crash for $80 and it sounds just as good as something from the Zildjian A Custom"
      And I'm like "huuuuuuuu? The A Custom is the GOOD ONE?"
      Well I did pay $75 for it, used in 1995. So it's really a keeper? Maybe that gong sound is just because I'm not crashing hard to loud music. Is that normal? And could age be a factor?

    Cool vid , sound advice , I have been telling young drummers about the cheap drums/expensive cymbals thing forever , good skins and tuning can make ordinary drums sound way better but a crap cymbal will always sound like what it is . I just bought a pair of cheap Chinese large diaphragm condensers and am trying out all the one mic/ two mic/ three mic/ then Glyn Johns 4 mic set up . I'm not happy with the un EQ'd kick drum sounds yet , agree about the mic inside the kick sound , I have recently got back into playing with the kick reso head on , so I been trying to get those great old sounds , rather than over deadened , over EQ'd ' modern ' sounds . Perhaps the metal doors but open (ish ) walls of your storage facility help with that big drum ambience . Anyhoo , great stuff .

Unfortunately, I had a problem with people who would go there to hang out and complain about the noise (who hangs out in a storage unit!, besides me! playing drums!). Anyway, I will find another one and bring my macbook pro and a couple mics. This video is an inspiring starting point. Glad I found ya.

    • @WyattStav
      @WyattStav 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      9dy8bobby I mean.. if you want a stereo spread it would be a bit better to just add a second AT20-20 to your set up .. and use one as a left .. and the other as a right. Just be careful with position tho.. cuz those mics are so hot they will overlap and possibly phase.

    Still heavily depends on what your genre is. If you are doing modern heavy rock or prog for example, you need super crisp tightness but also natural room reverb, usually being the best results straight from the source without too much post work. If you do alternative rock or funky laid back music you can totally do a simple fat set up for that style because it doesnt have to be super clean.

    This is gold man! Digging your sound (both in the feel- and the mix-kinda way ;) ) keep it up! Love to see some more Steve Jordan breakdowns like your last one. Easily my fav groove drummer 🔥

    A lot of people fail to have the drums sound good to begin with, before any muffling any effects any dampening, then make it even better before recording, finally once you record you will have a great sound to begin with, and any shortfalls can be corrected with software.

    Amazing video to help us beginners. I literally have everything already without spending a penny. I just have no knowledge on how to begin recording. Amazing.
