- Todays Crime Files I tell the True Crime story of Yvonne Fletcher.
The murder of Yvonne Fletcher, a Metropolitan Police officer, occurred on 17 April 1984, when she was fatally wounded by a shot fired from the Libyan embassy on St James's Square, London, by an unknown gunman. Fletcher had been deployed to monitor a demonstration against the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and died shortly afterwards. Her death resulted in an eleven-day siege of the embassy, at the end of which those inside were expelled from the country and the United Kingdom severed diplomatic relations with Libya.

There are news reports you never forget. This is one of them. A young woman who knew what she wanted to do in life and was robbed of it. Thank you Paul for covering this.
I understand her struggle to get into the police force, I was not tall enough either.
I was in the Police force at the same time and was retired after being assaulted on duty, so this really resonated with me. Very respectfully done Paul. Things like this should never be forgotten.

I used to pass the memorial to WPC Yvonne Fletcher every day when I worked at Apple Tree Yard. The footage of her lying in the road fatally injured is still very upsetting 40 years later. R.I.P. Yvonne.

Following this murder the late Michael Winner set up the Police Memorial Trust. Yvonne Fletcher's parents appeared on Michael Winner's edition of This is Your Life and he was visibly moved.
This story brought back sad memories for me, as I had a wonderful cousin who was a police officer here where I live in Australia, and he was shot and killed in the same year as Yvonne, leaving behind his wife and three young children. I have a great respect for the police who go out to work to protect us ❤❤❤🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I remember the day so well, my career had just started and I was driving home, it feels like only yesterday. I still feel angry the way the whole thing was dealt with, the government let the killer of a fine young woman / officer walk out of the country and she never received any justice. She had no life and I will retire in 5 years, RIP Miss Fletcher, no one will forget you.

Hi Paul, I was 8 years old when this happened. It's strange how certain names from childhood never leave your memory.... To be cruelly taken so young doing the job she loved must be so painful for her family, well done on another sensitive crime file video.
I was 13 when this happened & I remember seeing it on the news & talking about it with my mates when we discussed it in our sociology class, excellent video as usual x

I remember the horrendous event only too well. To have a police officer gunned down was very rare and dreadful, but, a police woman? Unbelievable. Just so sad.

I was working in my garage that day when it came on the news, I was shocked especially when I see the footage of her being shot . Really sad she didn't deserve that. she was about the same age as me.

I remember this so well, it was in the year before I joined the police force, it certainly didn't put me off, if anything it made me more determined. Her unecessary loss still upsets me to this day.

I was deployed to that location as was stationed in Hereford with the Military. Spent 10 day just yards from the bloodstained road waiting for instructions that never came. Rest in peace young lady..
