Philadelphia Homeless Woman Has Lived on the Streets for Seven Years.

  • Gina had a stroke and lost her job. She lived with her daughter for a short time but eventually ended up on the streets homeless.
Gina relocated to Philadelphia during the Occupy Philly movement. Throughout the country, many homeless people integrated with the Occupy movement in their cities because Occupy provided safe places to pitch a tent and often food and bathrooms.
She stays in a homeless shelter. The shelter provides a room for four people but everything else the homeless person has to provide. Programs like this actually create more panhandling. Homeless people can't find employment but they have to pay to stay in the shelter. On the other side, funding for nonprofits continues to be cut so shelters are forced to charge for services.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

char charles Thank you Char, I am a mother to my sons though. I'm struggling and it's hits me hardest mentally. I wish I had the power to end all homelessness!! I've been watching these videos for a while now and each one of these souls are precious and don't deserve being overlooked especially by family. I've helped whenever I could even if I was struggling because I know how it is. I was so hungry last week and all I had was a microwavable popcorn packet so I went into a 7-11 to ask if I could borrow their microwave.....the employee said only if I purchase something. I will never give business to 7-11 again. Have a blessed day!

I'm surprised the shelter makes residents hand over half of their food stamps in order to get help. Is this legal? I don't think so. It's meant to feed the recipient, not to be bartered for something in return.

She gets the food stamps to make sure she has enough to eat and the shelter is giving her food, so it makes sense that she gives them the food stamps. It is still a good deal for her because as a homeless she is not able to cook her food and they are doing it for her. Without the shelter she would have to eat raw food or buy expensive prepared food which would be too expensive for food stamps.

I don’t understand why you people of America are too disconnected from your families!? I mean no disrespect but your society is lacking the the family role. And I believe it’s the most important role in every country. We as people of Saudi Arabia have families supporting us and it’s near impossible to be homeless in Saudi Arabia. Even the poor people have a shelter to live in. Our families provide us and help us even if someone is broke they will help him. If you don’t have money for your weeding your family will support you and also in your wedding day guests will give you money to support you. It’s insane what happens to America. And I feel so so bad for the homeless in your country.

It seems like to get anything in this country, you have to have a lot of hustle, drive and support. If you are lacking in any of these, it is hard. You basically have to fight and scrounge for whatever you get, and then fight to hang on to it. Some people would sooner just give up and drop out of the system. She spends her days panhandling like it is no use to try to fit in any other way. It is too bad the shelters don't offer some kind of employment for these people so they don't have to spend their days panhandling. There is probably something she could be doing and earning some money.

I pray that she gets housing. I question the legality of a homeless person having to surrender half of their foodstamps to the shelter. Does anyone know if this is a common practice among shelters? Or at just that shelter. Our goverment needs to start a national program to end homelessness. To continue to sweep it under the rug is not a solution. If America is going to continue to be a great nation. Then the powers that be need to start a national program to end homelessness. People raise more hell about abandoned animals then step right over a human being on the street. The animals welfare is important to me also. So why aren't the homeless just as important? We as a nation need to lobby our Congressmen for a positive solution. Plus everyone who is able needs to open up their eyes in their own neighborhood. No matter how small any help is appreciated. Just a few pairs of socks or a blanket or some food. To all people in America Please just make an effort to help anyway you can. Don't turn a blind eye. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Peace

    • @lucybell-0
      @lucybell-0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Exactly. Thank you for your comment. There is a common misconception that homeless people are getting a free ride; that we are ungrateful leeches. The truth is so far from that. The amount of income and food stamps that many shelters demand would not equal anything close to a fair price for the heinous, degrading living conditions given in exchange. Non-homeless people can't even begin to imagine what we go through. Who would give up half, or all of their insufficient grocery money, and the majority of their hard won income for the privilege of sleeping on a floor or cot in a crowded, filthy room? Non-homeless would feel outrage if their landlords yelled at them, told them what and when to eat, and refused to let them be int their apartments except for a handful of hours at night--regardless of their actual schedules and needs. This ignorance needs to stop.

I have witnessed with my own eyes of which she speaks playing out in my own community mostly due to addiction/mental illness. It's overwhelming and we have a population of only 166,000. I was just reading that serious consideration is being given to bringing back asylums as a solution to homelessness. I find this disturbing to hear. I hope this won't become the solution because clearly this lady is thinking coherently and am concerned that
folks like her will be forced into one or anyone who happens to end up homeless due to health issues or loss of a job. Could be any of us including myself. And I fear that those who need intensive stabilization will remain there indefinitely without any hope of getting out. We will all need to vote no on any future measure supporting this.
I'm glad she is sheltered and that she will have permanent shelter soon.

A certain section of Philly is drug infested and dangerous. I hope she is not on the streets in that area. Other than being in a shelter she doesn't seem to have any plans to improve her situation. I think for many that is the sad case. They've lost hope.

Jan Warriner + Every city and town has big drug problems.......you can 'thank' your government for that, they are the drug cartels! Bush's, Clinton's,et.al. You can also 'thank' all the drug pushers you people call "Doctors" and "Pharmacists" as they are practicing Pharmakia or WitchCraft. A sorcery of 'medicine' with NO care for health, as they NEVER CURE anyone, but only 'treat' the symptoms and NEVER the root cause.
That homeless woman is living in reality while everyone around her, trying to ignore her, IS the problem; because they are living in a false reality and denying all of humanity around them to their own peril. Once you choose to stop seeing others in need as yourself reflected (fellow human), your own humanity diminishes, you become cold hearted, unfeeling, non-human. Thousands of children are homeless and "Americans" can't 'fix' that but we can launch a "Military Campaign" is MINUTES!!
What homeless person have you fed or clothed or given a couple $$$ to or helped in any way?? Do you have any clue as to how difficult it is to just obtain a shower when you are homeless?? Who's going to even talk to a 'stinky' person, much less hire them???
Your lack of knowledge and compassion are showing. Her hope as All of our HOPE lies in YOU..........
      H-helping (that's an ACTION word)
      O-others (the opposite of Self)
      P-provides (to supply, to prepare)
E-ease =(Ease--- a quiet state; tranquility; freedom from pain, concern, anxiety.)
Imagine the anxiety one has not KNOWING where or if the next meal is coming from, where will they be safe, where will they sleep and the millions of others questions that go with NOT having the convenience of getting out of bed with Everything needed to exist in 'society' right where you left it when you crawled into that comfy bed. Try carrying your whole life on your back every day all day long and see how it feels!!

Mark Lloyd The error you made is two-fold. (1) My remark was certainly not meant to be unkind. (2) I've been homeless. So rather than being as preachy and JUDGMENTAL as your remarks let me say you need to be careful not "to throw the first stone". YOUR FAULTS ARE GLARING.

char charles of course! Totally agree. Where are the outreach people? The person on the street that offers her lunch? Anyone, anywhere? No one. That's how hope gets lost for many.
Worst yet just like she stated Philly is a dangerous city. The Kensington section is now so bad with drugs and other things/murders/deaths from OD right on the street that the police recently had a sting..not for the users but the dealers. Fentanyl is killing off the users there. Many are young people. Crime goes up, up, up in that area. It's out of control. I know. I worked in the city. I knew it firsthand. Even in the "nice" part you can be killed by a drive by and you weren't meant to be the target. I hope she can somehow get out of Philly.

If she was not left with permanent disability because of the stroke she wouldn't meet the requirements, but if she has lasting disability she may have qualified. Maybe she could get SSI?

I think payable shelters are affordable housing. If the shelters can provide a secure and clean place for a cheap price this is much better than sleeping rough. If they cannot pay even a small fee, how and when they will be able to pay a rent? Is it forbidden to sell candies or roses on the streets? Many people who won't give alms could buy something just to help the homeless. I do.

I can see where you are coming from. At the same time, he is listening to their stories- this channel is an art project, in a way. It’s a collection of stories, hopes, dreams, and struggles. I find it beautiful how despite him asking similar questions every time, he still receives such vivid and personal variations in people’s answers. Perhaps he does cheer them on when the camera cuts off- some might argue that it would seem egotistical or lackadaisical for him to tell them to be chipper on camera. One might say that unscripted goodness when nobody is watching is the truest kind. There are a multitude of factors. Still, I think that this man is doing a fantastic thing. I have learned so much from his videos- there is so much to learn from listening to others.
In sum, of course improvements can be made. Though we should also try to put ourselves in the position of others- that’s what this channel is all about :)!
Also, there are no ads on these videos as far as I know, meaning that he doesn’t actually make any money from them.

The Holy Bible - The Book of Estras 2:20 Guard the rights of the widow, secure justice for the ward, give to the needy, defend the orphan , cloth the naked, care for the injured and the weak, Do not ridicule the lame, protect the maimed, and let the blind have avfision of God's splendor. Protect the old and young within our walls (your city). The rich are to take in those who are cast out. And I the Lord will give you the first place in my resurrection.
2 Estradas 3.28 They abound in wealth, though they are unmindful of your commandments - Though shall not kill. Love your neighbror as yourself.
Estras 7:72 Those who live on the earth shall be tormented because they had understanding, they committed injustice, and though they received the commandments of the Lord , they did not keep them, obtained the law yet dealt unfaithfully. Estradas 8:56 For while we lived and committed injustice, we did not consider what we should suffer after death.
Estradas 11:41 You have judgeed the earth, but not with truth, for you have oppressed the meek and injured the peaceable, you have hated those who tell the truth, and loved liars; you have destroyed the homes of those who brought forth fruit, and have liad low the walls of those who did you no harm. Your insolence has come up before the Most High, and your pride to the Mighty One. The Most High has looked at his times; now they have ended, and his ages have reached completion. Esradas 15:22 My right hand will not spare the sinners, and my sword will not cease from those who shed innocent blood on earth. And a fire went forth from his wrath, and consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners, like burnt straw. Alas for those who sin and not observe my commandments, says the Lord. Repent! Turn from your wicked and evil ways.
