I first met Callie as she was rummaging through food donations kind local citizens leave on the ground. There is no refrigeration. Homeless people who live in this Harbor City homeless encampment have to grab what they need to survive quickly, or the food spoils.
This is no way for anyone to live, but Callie has been homeless in Los Angeles for eight years since her husband died. After 25 years of marriage, Callie's husband suddenly passed away from cancer. With her savings wiped out, Callie ended up on the streets with nowhere to go.
Callie says the resources to get out of homelessness are little to none. She adds that it is difficult to find a job. Because of the ongoing police sweeps and constant moving, Callie now has problems with her legs.
On Mother's Day, Callie wrote to her district councilman Joe Buscaino. She first started to thank him for what he has done and then went on to ask if they could have a sanctioned homeless encampment creating a safe space with bathrooms for them to live. At the time, the community was located across the street. Because the homeless camp was in a flood zone, the city moved them.
And the city keeps moving them. Callie says Harbor City police and sanitation did a homeless sweep the day after Christmas and after Thanksgiving. Imagine you're trying to make the best of a horrible situation living in a tent when the police come and make you pack up to sweep the area, and that's your holiday!
Callie doesn't drink or use drugs. She doesn't have a mental illness yet. The longer she stays outside, the more at risk Callie is. Callie says she's never gotten used to living in a tent. She's been a homeowner. She's been to college. Homelessness is not her way of life, but she has nowhere else to go.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Wow!!!!! That's an awesome invitation you gave her. I lost my husband and two sons (ages 7 and 9) in an accident a long time ago. I totally FROZE UP for a year. One day I was watching TV and there was like a glittering light in the corner of the room. I heard, in my head, adult male voices that said they were my sons. They said they had important work to do where they were now and my attachment to them was holding them back. They spoke a bit harshly to me, said they appreciated the time they spent with me but I'm interfering with what they need to do now and I need to let them go and move on. It was actually a bit aggressive in the message. The sparkling light faded away and there I was dumb struck. Was I crazy, did I have a stroke? I was wide awake, never drank or did drugs. That day, a year after the funerals, I got in the shower, had my car I'd not started in a year jumped and went out applying for a job, and got one.
What ever it was, what ever happened, it changed me for life. I believe it was my boys, but their voices were like young men. I decided not to live my live as a grave stone to the family I lost, but move on and cherish the good I learned when I had a family. I never dated or remarried. I can still see that sparking light and hear their voices to this day. Life changing moment for me. When I let them go I let myself go, too. I've used that lesson in many aspects of my life ever since.

We do have homeless people, don't get me wrong, but most of them are alcoholics or drug addicts, not a fully functional and educated woman such as her.
It is truly a shame that the richest country in the world isn't willing to offer a basic human right to its own citizens. If here in Europe we can provide it, and our countries have a much, much, much smaller economy, the United States can too

@@emmaq3250 California didn't decide to have a high cost of living, that's what happens when there are many high paying jobs in the area. The cost of living is directly proportionate to the ability of people to pay for such living. You can't charge $4,000 for a two-bedroom apartment if there's nobody there to pay for it, you know? California also has good weather for the homeless, and they actively move out here. So for a variety of reasons, California has been strapped with a disproportionate homeless problem. And if you stay at a shelter you're somehow an untouchable or pitiful person to a lot of people in society. It can be cold and cruel. It's hard not to be bitter or have a cold heart after seeing how narcissistic a lot of people are. We all have that tendency because of social media "selfie culture", and the obsession with materialism and fame culture. Our connection to earth and our fellow man is extremely damaged. South Dakota is one of the cheapest places to live and you can't live off a grocery store wage here. Maybe in the small towns you can scrape by but not in the larger ones. You have to make over $30k a year here to even begin to feel somewhat safe, and that's assuming nothing is wrong in your life.

    • @royalredus
      @royalredus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@likejohnnyandjune2024 In many small towns in Indiana, you can work at a local grocery or dollar store for $8.00 hr. If you work just 30 hrs/week you'll make over $900/ month. No taxes due to low income. In those areas you can rent a trailer or even a room in someone's house for $200/ month. You have a roof over your head in a safe town and a few hundred a month for other expenses. Way better than sleeping on the ground in L.A., making zero dollars, plus you have your dignity. And with someone like Callie who has an education, moderately healthy, and no substance abuse problems, this is a workable solution for her.

This can happen to anyone who is living on the poverty line. Lets not forget mentally what happens as these events happen. Yes there are drug users, mentally ill, etc. Many didn't start out that way. Our society seems to let people fall on the wayside. I don't have the answers but know that this is a societal problem which needs to be seriously addressed. Same here. I'm not able to drive, or I'd have an RV or van, too. Better than one of those awful homeless shelters. Those are dirty, dangerous places. Discreet stealth camping, where no one sees you, you are clean and don't litter, do drugs or drink, etc. That's much safer. Affordable housing, that's the thing. Get an affordable storage unit to put your documents in,other things not being used, get one with electricity. That's for charging your phone/ laptop. Sleep at night, hidden. And during the day, that's your time for working on being housed. And all that comes after.
