  • The Sony Z90 and the Canon XF405 - two lovely new camcorders.
    Both much smaller than previous generations of camcorders - both a joy to film with.
    I've had a play - and then put them side by side to see how they compare. I tested low light, depth of field and the lens zoom ratios.
    These cameras are ideal for journalists and film-makers on the go. If you want a super filmic look, they are not for you. But if you want to travel light and get all the shots you want in one very portable package - these are lovely bits of kit.

    would have loved a harder focus test done with the cameras. Clearly, the last shots you had issues as mentioned by others. Maybe a similar test of focus for the Canon and Sony.

    There is a problem with your testing method...the Sony at 33db compared to the Canon at 39db, the Sony is darker at 33db than the previous shot where it is shown at 30db.

    wow the sony white balance was more spot on. one thing i miss on my X70 is the easy access to the white balance setting .. pain to have to go through a set up each time..

    Good and concise review, but I wonder what camera or camcorder has been used to record this youtube review?

    I work on a brazilian tv (tv tropical/Rede Tv) and we use the panasonic camcorders, but I have preference in the Sony cams. The line XDCAM is perfect to me and the line panasonic are good too, but my preference is the Sony cams. we have three camera brands: Sony, Panasonic and Canon, but we use the panasonic to follow the patterns of TV.

    Did you record this video on a Panasonic camera? It was hunting for focus like crazy all along the video. The review and your tests were great, thank you.

      Miklos Nemeth Ha. Good spot. GH5! Really didn’t like it when the light was bad!

      Haha, now im thinking about selling my GH5 and my X70 (aka Z90) and buying the Canon. I like the look of its images and to me, in this video, the images of the Canon look better than the images from the GH5 and the Z90.

      SuperRaven79 The Canon is really nice. I particularly like the way you adjust exposure settings in the front wheel. Very ergonomic if you set it up right! I think, though I was rushing the lighting in the GH5. I usually love the pix!
      PS I don’t think the z90 and x70 are the same!

      I've been watching your movies wit the X70, amazing image quality for 1080; your videos look as if they were shot all 4K. I am pretty sure as for image quality you will not have any significantly better from Z90/XF400. Especially not for FHD, the XF400 has only 35 Mbps HD, even in 120fps, The Z90 has very clean 100Mbps 120fps. I mention this since I saw that you like slow-mo. I am not absolutely sure, if the extra $500 of the XF400 worth the money vs the NX80; the WVF on the Sony's are way much better. Are you sacrificing the joystick of your X70? The joystick on the XF400 is a joke, not a joy. The Sony 1" cameras are way much more popular than the GX10/XF400.

    I think I read they both lack a waveform monitor for exposure. Big no-no for me at least.

    In my professional opinion, Sony has better low light, Canon is excellent under daylight conditions. Both manufacturers make excellent products.

    Great video, thanks for comparing both cameras. How do these two cameras compare to the Panasonic AG-UX180. I have the Sony EX1R and I am in the process to get a new camera, I do film event parties at night and also do film sports, from your perspective which camera would be better for that kind of filming i do?

    • @nickskinnertv1898
      @nickskinnertv1898  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Felipe Galindo Of those cams I really only have experience of the the UX 180 - which is a very nice camera. But it feels quite large and clunky beside these two. It does have a nice wide lens, though I’ve not tested it next to the 405. The two featured here do feel a little more solid too.

    Question, would you think the exposure on this video when you were saying "you won't break your back folding these" is it me or is it under exposed

    Thanks for this video! Can you record on the internal microphone on 1 channel & external microphone on the other, for either or both of the cameras?

    • @nickskinnertv1898
      @nickskinnertv1898  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solaris Photography Sorry. I didn’t test that- I only ever use external mics.

    • @WupperVideo
      @WupperVideo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Canon can record 4 channels simultaneously, so you will always get atmo sound from the internal mics and could connect two external mics.

      Gurmeet Singh The Canon. Though if you are paying the Sony was considerably cheaper at the time of writing. So I had to balance that with the benefits of the Canon.

      I think if price wasn’t an issue I’d go for the Canon. Prices may have changed since I filmed this!
