I have these two as well, exactly. I love them both and I'm usually wearing one or the other. I gravitate to watches that just look like "watch", and these both fit with that. The Explorer sees more action, but the Datejust works any time too. The AD stock thing is a pain in the ass. And we're the problem when we talk and think about Rolexes as cash, so I try not to. But inventory control has everything to do with back-end residuals, which guards our backs while (mostly) watching theirs.
Sooo close in both, but I think on an emotional level....I like the Explorer just a little bit more. Helps that I've already got a TT Sub for when I want to be flashy and out there.
The Explorer feels more relaxed and understated, I’d look forward to wearing it every day and wouldn’t care as it got scratched and worn in. The datejust is a sensible choice for most people who want a do it all watch, but for me the 41mm looks big and the 36mm looks small (I’ve owned several 36mm on my 7in wrist but now days I’d want a bit bigger). I also feel that the datejust is so ubiquitous with the many various iterations and copies that I see, but the Explorer is a bit like the Speedmaster- when I see someone with one on I think it might likely be a watch guy. If I see someone with a datejust, it doesn’t say anything, it has very little character to me. Obviously all subjective things above, but I’d go Explorer and then look to get a Reverso or a vintage piece for dressier occasions.
Same here, The Explorer and the Reverso would be a fantastic combo, and in fact my next two watches (in that order). Unless I run out of patience waiting on the Explorer. My AD is both a Rolex and JLC dealer, the Reverso I want is in stock, it's so tempting.
I own exactly both of those watches and love them more than any others (yes, I’ve purchased many professional series as well) These are the only 2 watches I need and they overlap with each other nicely. Thanks!
DJ41 is more business oriented and perfect for daily use, on my case, smooth dial, blue dial and oyster bracelet, were my choices, Explorer is sportier, more functional, nice option as well
Very nice comparison, I was really interested in a video like this, and these 2 watches can easily be considered as a complete 2 watch collection, awesome watches👍 I have this Explorer and saving up to get the same exact DJ configuration either in 41 or 36 as you have here
@@watchyourstyle haha yes similar taste however you are way ahead of me in terms of watch collection. For me I think with datejust the charm is in it being a 36mm watch, considering the ratio between the bracelet and case and historically DJ was a 36 watch and some say datejust is determined by its size more than anything. However who am I kidding, I think I will go for the 36 as it's cheaper:)) I have bigger wrist and 41 looks better on my wrist but honestly I can't justify 11k for a DJ at the moment and would prefer sub at that price range or older GMT master with all black bezel
I'm a d.va main and I own the explorer and s Reverso. Had a Datejust for a while. But it's just too flashy and because of that its not classy. It's " please look at me watch" and the explorer grabs your attention without asking for it.
Great video. I have a Rhodium dial, smooth bezel with jubilee 41 DJ, and have been contemplating going to the more everyday Explorer 39. The new 36 is just too small for my 7.5 " wrist. I love the DJ, but I really never wear it out. Haven't decided yet, but this video was super helpful. I have a new 41 Sub/date as well. Just torn about the two black-faced Rolexes being redundant. I see you have the Hulk so you figured that one out. The black, blue and green look solid together. Watch problems. :)
Thank you so much! Rolex definitely does their colors right. I still gravitate towards my black dial watches when I’m looking for a versatile piece. The 41mm sub is incredible - one of my favorites. If I were to choose one I would go with the sub :) Thanks for watching!
Nice video! Which of these two wears larger in your opinion? Judging from the photo's it seems to be the DJ, but I like to hear about your everyday experience in this regard. Thanks!
Very interesting question! Overall the explorer wears larger due to the oyster bracelet. However I will say the dj41 wears more top heavy due to the large case paired with the jubilee bracelet
"SORRY in advance for any audio issues" LOL! So you are pleased with the video quality? This shuoldent never been published. Sorry but that is true. Anyway good idea comparing theese 2 models of Rolex.
Dang man. Thanks for the video. I graduate In ‘22 and I’m about to head over to start building that relationship. It’s between these two. I want the watch to be a nicer elegant watch to go out with. But subtle enough to not snag the attention if I’m out with it casually. I do like the jubilee strap. So many choices man.
Hey Jay, thanks for tuning in! Congrats for reaching the halfway mark before you graduate. Can’t go wrong with either of these 😉 I would say the Explorer is a better all arounder though. Cheers mate!
For me I'd have the explorer every time I'm not a big fan of date complications at the best of times and dislike the Cyclops. True the explorer is less dressy than a DJ, but the DJ isn't a real dress watch ( and the fluted bezel, jubilee variant which looks by far the best DJ is less dressy) I'd stick to my nomos Orion no date for that. At the end of the day it's all personal choice they are both great watches .
Nice video man. Just one thing. Are you sure your wrist size is 6.5 inches (I guess you meant circumference, it can’t be diameter)? My wrist is 6.5 in and I just tried on the date just 41. It looks very big on my wrist…
Hmm that’s a tough one but I would still choose my combination. I have a love hate relationship with the sub... it’s a classic watch but its popularity has almost become its downfall
@@watchyourstyle I think I'm gonna go for the datejust like yours to pair with my explorer. After it I'll buy an omega seamster. Then I'll go out with the explorer on the left wrist and the datejust on the right and then I'll say " nerf this" :D
I personally prefer the jubilee in terms of overall comfort - it’s slimmer, smoother feeling, and it’s better ventilated. The oysterlock is a nice advantage on the Explorer however. Thanks for watching!
How do you feel about the 39mm size? I have a 6.2" wrist and I'm a little worried it might be a bit big, wish they kept the 36mm 😔 but great comparison, loving your detailed videos!
Hi! Thanks for tuning in. While 39 is a lot larger than the 36, I feel that the watch wears nicely, due to its thin profile and tapered oyster bracelet. I have 6.5” wrists and it wears elegantly on my wrist. I think you’ll enjoy it 😉 let me know if you end up getting it!
@@watchyourstyle Visited two AD's (in Vancouver, BC) and was told that it won't be available any time soon, one took my number but wouldn't take a deposit so not expecting much haha. Put down a deposit on the BB58 in the mean time :)

Good for you to own both. Basically the quintessential datejust and one of the most storied sports watches in any brands line up. @@watchyourstyle yes. The current two tone. Actually, should be called the Black&Tan if you ask me. It's a doable everyday but I don't want to completely abuse it.

Yess I forgot to mention the Datejust definitely is a sporty watch, even thought it looks dressier. It’s definitely the quintessential Rolex. Thanks so much for tuning in and for your support 👍
The Datejust is nice but that white gold fluted bezel will take a beating over time as the softness of the material will rear its ugly head. Why not just make it out of the same material as the case (SS)? Is that extra "shine" that important? Or do it like Omega with its Globemaster, their fluted bezel is made out of tungsten - guaranteed durable.
Hey Carlo, yeah there was an issue when I was uploading the video. I think it happens when you try to do it directly through TH-cam. I’ve since fixed the issue :) sorry for burning a hole through your retina
