I'd personally pick the Datejust! I've always seen it as the perfect daily and aspire to own a modern one in the future. The gold and steel with fluted bezel combo is just legendary.
100%! It's hard to describe, but the Rolex Datejust is just perfect in so many ways. I also aspire to own one in the hopefully not so distant future (although, given the current situation, who knows).
The 1 Omega watch is the No Time to Die SeaMaster… it’s sporty, amazing specs & heritage, light from the titanium, still flashy with the bracelet… yet, all the while muted as a watch and can go under the radar… this is the perfect 1 watch from Omega.
A nice watch ⌚ but the faux patina is a little to much for my personal taste. That's the only thing I don't like the 300 series. Now if Omega does a Omega Seamaster big triangle no date recreation with no faux patina. It will be a instant purchase. Also Not the biggest fan of the helium escape valve don't hate it but don't love it either
A client let me try one on that he had one day. I was nearly sold. It was very comfortable. It did seem to have a lower profile to other watches in is class while at the same time not compromising anything. I also liked the orangish markers.
I think I'd keep my Tudor Black Bay 58 if I could only have one. On leather, it can be suitably dressed up, but on steel is as tooly as you could want. Killer movement, strong WR, Beautiful vintage looks.
I can't fault that choice, Tudor are amazing. If they ever did a new Submariner, I would be all over it. Trying very hard to stay well away from the new Pelagos 😂😂😂 Enjoy your BB58! Loved my time in Italy with it. Best regards, TGV
I got the blue variant a few months ago but couldn’t make the bracelet work, even with an Uncle Seiko half-link. I just got a Forstner O bracelet for it & it’s great!
@@chriscon8463 Have a blue one myself and absolutely love it, use the leather strap to smarten it up but most of the time it lives on a MN strap or NATO. If I could only have one watch out of my collection the 58 would be it.
It would be a tie between the G 5610 and my " Ray Mears" 2018. They both have legibility and need very little service. Things you appreciate when getting older.
Not an unpopular opinion at all, but it all depends on the occasions you wear a watch. You wouldn’t want to wear a G-Shock to anything formal. But, if you don’t go to make formal functions, it’s easily the best
I received a blue dial , fluted bezel, DateJust as a graduation gift in ‘83. It still runs perfectly and looks great after decades of wrist time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your DateJust .
Back in day that two tone datejust is THE watch many regular people would buy to celebrate a marriage, promotion, having a child/grandchild, starting own business etc. A proud moment you could walk into an AD, for that "made it" moment. Many a restaurant owner to trades people I knew would celebrate opening their business by buying this watch (and many are still wearing it day/night 30 years later). Despite seeming elegant today, due to its 36mm, its an incredibly solid watch. Datejust over an explorer all the way. Personally, if I had to choose one of my own watches as the only life, its a rolex 5700.
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned "nostalgia." I had a Rolex 1655 from 1978 until I sold it in 1997. And I immediately missed it. But I can't replace it as they are now going for $25,000+!!!! So I got a Steinhart Ocean GMT OLKO Special Edition and - every time I glance at my wrist - it's 1978 again. I LOVE the watch. You should review it if you can get one!
This is kind of how I feel about my Invicta Pro Diver. It's great for work, play, or dress. Smooth steel lines, automatic movement...and although I have four other watches, it feels like it's the only one I really need.
My only Rolexes nowadays are a quartz Invicta Pro Diver and a Seiko SNK79K1. It is amazing to me how well made these things are for the money and superior to all the old Rolex I have bought and sold in the past. Being old now it is things like this and weird $20 17 Jewel HMT hand winds from India that interest me rather than needing to "impress" no one with an over priced piece of jewelry from arguably the best marketing company in the world.
My grail is the explorer, none date, at present I am enjoying my recently acquired SARB 033 and it lives up to what is portrayed in all your videos. My SKX 007 is over twenty year old now and it shows....what am I trying to say, well my one watch is probably a Seiko, I am just unsure which one. Anyway, thank you TGV, for another superb video to brighten our day.
I love the idea of wearing one watch for years…I would choose and explorer but can’t afford it. I wear a Seiko Willard as a daily but other watches for the office. The Willard is perfect for around the house, yard work, hiking and biking. Another great video!
Loved this video, especially at the end where you say, ‘enjoy these feelings, enjoy these watches’’. Can’t argue with date just or explorer being the ultimate one watch. I’d lean towards explorer. Im hoping to get a two tone soon. For now though, from my collection my G-Shock 5610 is the one watch that does it al for me. I bought it through pure nostalgia and it has never let me down.
Casio Edifice EFV-100 black dial. Explorer looks for £69 so you never have to be precious about it. The date window integration is superb. Looks good as a daily on a bracelet or on black leather for an evening. It sits well alongside far more expensive watches and commands a disproportionately large amount of wrist time.
Out of my collection I would have to go with my Orient Ray 2 black. Got it almost a year ago and it rarely leaves my wrist. It has handled everything in my day to day and I can still look down and get the sense of enjoyment out of it as the day I first put it on
You’re so right. I wish I could keep it at just one. You know, that’s the real definition of a grail watch: the one and only timepiece you want to wear all the time.
Omega Speedmaster and Rolex GMT, it's nearly impossible to choose between the two for me. If I had to choose, I would probably lean towards the Speedy. Thank you for the video!
I've often thought about reducing my small collection to one watch. Not too sure I could do it. But one watch I will always have is my old style Seiko 5. Similar in style to a Datejust It really does have it all, classy looks that fits nearly all circumstances, great lume, strap monster, will go for decades, brand with great history and affordable. Are they the best watches ever made and can I go diving in it? Probably not. But that doesn't stop me wearing it with pride, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Great video as always and onwards and upwards dear sir 👍
Great video. While I love the classic 36mm Datejust, my choice, if allowed only one watch, would be my 36mm 124270 Explorer. It is literally the perfect watch for me.
When I was 18 my grandad gifted me his beloved 1984 Rolex Date which had been gifted to him as a retirement gift by his colleagues. Since then I have never worn any other watch. It is my travel and adventure companion, I wear it every day at work, it has been to over eight countries, etc. I completely lost the need to buy a watch.
Mine’s a 16013, it’s the watch I wear most mowadays and yes, the same thought often comes to my mind as well. It’s so comfortable, versatile and beautiful, I could hardly justify why I’d practically need other watches apart from satisfying some horological curiosity.
In my opinion, between the two the Datejust is a formal watch that can cover other bases while the Explorer is the true do-it-all. I can easily see someone using it on the beach Saturday, at Mass in the Sunday and back to work in the Monday. It feels moderate but has an appeal to adventure - like many of us, i believe. It's the sole Rolex i would care to have although i'm more inclined in looks (and price) to the Lorier Falcon and Smiths Everest. By the way, i hope that Dan Henry take a look into a smallish 3-6-9 watch like these in the future...
I have to save this one for a quiet moment this evening. I’ve been an Explorer fan for a long time but the Datejust addresses different concerns, concerns I’m becoming interested in again. Fluted bezels really are really something spectacular - like a disco ball for the wrist. My favorite DJ36 always have the miniature Romans on the outside of the minute/seconds track.
Question for you. If a watch has no day/date complication, can a watch face or dial be installed upside down to create a left hand crown watch? I mean, the movement will still 'move' clockwise. Or might this upset an automatic watch's rotor? Keep up the great work!
My quintessential pick from Rolex is still Oyster Perpetual Milgauss. Splashes of orange accents with the eye catching seconds hand is pure bliss for me. I also love the fact it's a no date watch with a clean dial all things considered. I can't forget the stunning green sapphire crystal it completes the look.
TGV, this is the first video of yours I have watched in a while, and can I just say that the production is astounding. Excellent work, and the content was of course superb. A two tone datejust is a watch I'd like to acquire one day, I only aspire to a small collection, but it could be the perfect watch as a centrepiece.
Welcome back Will and thank you for sharing that, very inspiring words. It looks like you have lots more video like this to enjoy 😉 🥂 Best regards, TGV
Just a few days ago I visited my old university with a dear friend of mine I first met there as a freshman exactly 25 years ago. Those feelings of nostalgia were very strong for us that day. Sadly, no particular watch is connected with these memories as that was way before my interest in the hobby started. Interestingly the purchase of my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch this year also increased my appreciation for my Sinn 556i as a do-it-all piece that is less complicated, more robust and somehow classless, joining entry-level simplicity with borderline luxury quality.
For me, it's a 5 digit sub. No one will think twice if you wear it with a suit and you could, conceivably, still use it in the water. THAT'S go anywhere do anything. Or save your money and buy a small collection so you don't need to worry about it!
Thanks TGV…for again a great video, this is such an awesome example of non-commercial super personal sharing, while combining deep knowledge of technical, historical and emotional perspective!!! You are a true gem … My RECENT 1 watch is my 11600 Rolex OP white dial….simplicity and functionality and beauty to its best…I have been wearing my JLC master ultra thin calendar with moon face for almost half a year (mainly work place), and switching weekend to 36mm pilot for weekend…but the fact that whenever i put my Rolex back on, i never change regardless of occasion, and it brings me so much joy of looking at it says pretty much everything
It would be a Tissot Prx blue dial. Or a Hamilton Field watch. I like simple understated watches. However if there was no budget limit it would be an explorer as well.
TGV only own one watch? The thought itself is unfathomable! But my own pick would be an Omega Aqua Terra, the closest modern day descendant of the old dressy Seamasters.
🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏 As for the Omega AT, it's like an even classier DJ 😉 You are so right, it's like the descendant of my vintage Seamaster. Excellent observation, I need to remember that. Thank you Alex, Best regards, TGV
I would happily have a datejust (36mm, two tone) as my only watch. I'm a child of the 80's and every time I look at it it takes me back. Also it's THE Rolex for me with the classic bezel, sporty but understated, a mature man's watch which I am 😊 Thanks TGV!
I wholeheartedly endorse this sentiment. Was lucky enough to (finally) get myself an 80s two tone Datejust and it turned out to be exactly what I imagined it to be, understatedly flamboyant and super comfortable on the wrist.
Its true isn't it... We 80's babies are moving into a new phase in our lives. Once wild and reckless now more restrained and sophisticated. 40 is looming for me and although I love my huge and flashy G-shocks and other colorful pieces, I have recently bought more subtle pieces.
@@johanvandersandt8904 same here brother, the big four-oh is but a few weeks away and indeed my tastes have changed as well, like you mentioned. Cheers!
Hi TGV! If I have to choose only one watch out of my current collection it would be my Cartier Santos (Ref. WSSA0037) for now. Its relatively versatile. But it might be that I would look for an Omega Aqua Terra as THE one watch. It has got this understatement I like. Best regards, Claus
After having bought, obsessed over, and sold many “GADA” watches, I’m currently settled fairly comfortably on a DJ 41 as an everyday wear. The configuration I chose (rhodium / jubilee / domed bezel) is definitely not too noticeable and screams “I’m a watch” more so than “I’m a Rolex”. Thanks for the video.
I must confess that you “Guv’nor” inspired me to buy my two tone DJ which is the must versatile watch in my collection and can be worn as a dress up or dress down. Yet another classic Urban Gentry production, thanks 🙏
Of all the luxury pieces I have tried on in AD’s, the two (I know you said 1 but hey) that stood out the most were the blackbay58 - the hark back to older variations, lack of crown guard, the use of gilt and the size all spoke to me. The second being the new Rolex Explorer1, to see how far it’s come, the beautiful 3,6,9, the gorgeous lume, the history behind it, the under the radar appeal and the fact it was Flemmings watch of choice. I stipulate tried on in AD’s because my Dads 59 Omega small seconds is incredibly special as well but needs to be cared for greatly. So that’s three… oh dear
Great essay, on this great watch. (Though I’m personally not a big fan of the Roman numerals) My father in law owns a 67 two-tone datejust with jubilee bracelet. He bought it with his first pay-check. I looked at it properly the other day and it’s FANTASTIC! Even though I always find two-tone a little brash; due to it’s age, the dial has faded & its shininess (is that a word?), has subdued a little. I will never wear it, as it eventually will belong to my missus & then my daughter; as you always say, it’s a watch you can hand down generations. 😉
While on paper, my Explorer is the one, my heart says BB58 BLUE. It could be my only watch that both expresses my personally, goes into the rugged environments I find myself, and looks lovely on a soft leather strap
I also love the choice my present watch collection offers, but if I could only have one, for me it’s the Speedy, it was the first expensive watch I bought and before I got addicted. It’s so classy, sporty and fits even well to a suit. Thank you for another great video TGV, I really love the videos you produce for us watch enthusiasts. Tanti saluti di Locarno, ciao!
the ultimate do its ll watch for me would be a Tudor Black Bay 58 and/or a trusted Hamilton Field Mechanical...both are always classy and always ready for any occasion!!!
For now I’m delighted with my Tudor BB36 - just the right size, just the right look and feel. I also still love my old Seiko 5 military beater watch, which gets frequent wrist time. But, if I were to go for one watch only, I think it would have to be a 36mm Explorer.
Amazing intro TGV! Love the editing during Gruber’s fall. For me, it used to be my Seamaster Professional 300, blue dial (2018 version). But then I was finally able to acquire a Submariner 124060. If I only had the Sub for the rest of my life, I would be very happy. I’ve had thoughts of selling the Seamaster and replacing it with a Speedmaster. Two iconic watches: The Sub and the Moonwatch. But the SMP is my first “luxury” watch, and I don’t know if I want to sell it. Bad juju?
I have just got round to finally wearing a datejust my father passed down to me (took me some time to get comfortable with the idea of wearing an all gold watch 😮 that i softened with leather straps). It’s a proper vintage too from 1956! Has been keeping perfect time even after years and years in storage 😊
Great video! To me, the conundrum of the “only 1 watch” issue is that there will always be some activity or situation for which the watch is ill suited. For those who hardly ever wear a suit and never a tux, the watches in the video (and most of the ones in the comments) are 99.9% solutions. However, for those who do, most of these watches aren’t a particularly good fit. That said, the classic DJ36 or 41 probably come closest to the “1 watch” mark. For me, if you put a gun to my head, the 1 watch would be - ALS 1815 annual calendar.
Loved this video. I remember as a 12 y.o. straining towards the screen to determine that Bond was wearing a Rolex. I purchased a Rolex Sea Dweller new in 1980, followed by a Rolex 2 tone ( Rolesor) Oysterquartz I purchased in Geneva. I still have it. 36mm in diameter, Buckley dial - white with painted Roman numerals, thermocompensated movement which came in -9 sec/yr when measured against WWV (no position error it was in my sdb). I still have it. The second hand latches into place with each tick, the precision of the sound is amazing. Highly finished movement, Rolex made only 25,000 of these Oysterquartz watches over the space of 25 years. Of course Rolex is not Patek Philippe, I own a few of those, however Rolex brand equity is unmatched. The Sea Dweller I purchased in 1980 hammered down 12.5x it’s purchase price when I sold it at auction in 2005 Sotheby’s New York. I could certainly be happy with just my Oysterquartz. I feel that most Rolex models are overpriced, but damn! You certainly get your money back plus some when you go to sell. I must say I really appreciate the herculian effort Rolex goes through to maintain the perceived value of their watches. That they can do so even while producing 1M watches/year is truly remarkable. Could not help but notice the Oysterquartz cameo in today’s video. 😊 Your’s are the best, keep up the good work and God Bless. ❤❤Chow
p.s. I send my Oysterquartz to the Rolex Service Center Dallas for a battery change once in a while. I send it Registered Mail. A few weeks later I get an official letter with that famous Rolex Green Letterhead: Counting every link, noting that the bracelet links are 14k and the bezel is 18k, and setting an insurance value. A few weeks later, arrives my watch, new battery (and new gasket? , pressure tested?. AND NO CHARGE!!🤯🤯😊😊Gratis!
Hello TGV, marvelous as per. The perfect everyday Rolex is the Tudor Black Bay 58 (maybe not at the opera!), and the great thing about Tudor is, apart from the heritage and pure class status, you can actually walk into an add and come out with a watch, not an earful and a dirty look. OAU x
Question about the 114270, Tristano: I have one, and I find it's not the best with straps because of the spring bar proximity to the case. It tends to cut into natos, for example. Have you experienced this? Do you have any tips to workaround this issue? Thanks!
For me its the same with my Orient silver "Datejust 41mm". Since i put it on a Titanium Bracelette that i took from an other Orient Hommage, a rare Orient GS-lookalike, the "Datejust" is now the ultimate evedyday watch. The lightness of the Titanium and the dark colour of this Bracelette matches perfect with the bright silver of that super rare Orient Hommage. In holiday i wear that watch over 4 weeks as my only watch and i could wear that the entire year, it never gets boring.
I know I’m a lil late on this video but just recently picked up the Seiko 5 SNKP21J1 because of the look it follows the explorer but with something a lil extra with the Arabic numerals, Any thoughts on this version in the place of the Explorer
I often ask myself this question. I put on a watch in the morning, one that I havent worn in a while but one I know will never leave my collection. I genuinely feel I could sell all others at that point. In the evening, I am thinking what to put on my wrist tomorrow ;) If I had to make a choice? I dont know, almost feels like asking me which kid I would sell last. Impossible choice…
Great video as always TGV. Excellent delivery. When you were talking about your Fortis, it got me thinking about the NASA Artemis program. What watches are associated or will be associated with the program? Thanks!
Very tough call to make TGV. I have been lucky enough to own both but the one I kept, after selling a 5 digit DJ and 14060, was a mid 90s 14270. Classy, strap monster and goes with anything and suitable anywhere from meetings to mountains, board room to the beach and even diving to 25m. It just does it all and mine has never missed a beat. in 30 plus years though I do service it every five to six years to ensure it keeps going like a charm. And it does
I Love the idea of one watch only. I cannot live without a day-date complication however 😁 Reason why I always wore my SNK361 instead of my Rolex OP Date Ref 15200 although I loves every bit of it.
Seiko SKX. The amount of modification options you have are endless, so you can always keep it fresh. No mod options on a Luxury watches besides the strap/bracelet. Servicing would be cheap also, and you could replace the movement for $50 if you’d like.
If I had to choose only one watch, it would be easy - Glicyne Airman 44 Purist GL0057 blue version. I would consider my native G.Gerlach PZL37, but the Seagull ST1902 mechanism is a little bit off. Vratislavia Conceptum Manometer 01 or 02 would also be tempting, unfortunately it is no longer available and probably never will be. If I could propose a topic for the next episode with Mark, I would love to see your types of 24-hour and one-hand watches.
So glad to see MOP being showcased. I have a DJ with the same configuration, except it’s 41mm instead of 36mm and has diamond hour markers instead of Roman numerals. I absolutely love it; it looks positively heavenly.
My friend you are very lucky to be able to wear a 36mm watch on your wrist and look like a 44mm would look at mine! It leaves you with so many options!!! My main squeeze is a 47mm Auguste Reymond 6498 flieger type, but my goal is to get ahold of a Sinn 6110 technik at some point and my grail is a Cartier santos 100 2656, if and when funds will allow. Keep up the good work...
I have thought many times that one of these days I'll sell everything and get a Datejust 36 fluted on jubilee. ( even though I do own a 214270) Great episode.
This is a tough one. I bought my first Rolex back in 1985, a two-tone Datejust. Yes, somewhat cliche. I still wear the watch occasionally. I also have a 39mm Explorer I that I like wearing it too. But if I have to pick one I will probably go with my 2004, 16623 a two-tone 40mm Yacht-Master. It's quite versatile and seems to fit with any occasions.
Great Video! I really enjoyed the subject and your content. The 1 watch scenario is a tough one to select, but if push comes to shove I’d have to choose my Rolex GMT Master II two-tone I purchased new 8 years ago. It’s been rock solid and it’s still #1.
many years ago my wife bought me a rolex two tone sub. a buddy needed some money so he made her a great deal. i wore it for around ten years but it was gathering too much attention. while vacationing in new orleans i found a used fortis flieger in a small shop in the french quarter. i didn’t know anything about the brand but it just spoke to me. i wore it for twenty years or so and loved it. a couple years ago i bought a sinn 856 and have been wearing it ever since. it’s totally under the radar and never gets noticed. my next watch will most likely be a hanhart 417 42mm because of my big ass wrist. this will probably be the first time i’ll switch watches for the next number of years.
Great content. I love my datejust (8 years on from what I now realise was lucky - as I just bought it on holiday from an AD and that didn’t seem weird at the time) As it’s an older model it doesn’t have any lume though. So perhaps… My one watch - is the next one I’m going to buy! 😊
That's a very interesting dive into the idea of what makes a good do-it-all watch. Oddly enough, I have a two tone datejust as one of the two watches in my small but hopefully growing collection. I think you are right here TGV, although I had not considered it before, it seems that I have been attracted particularly to watches which are as versatile as possible. Perhaps that's a normal thing for most enthusiasts?
My do it all is a Squale 1545 200m. 90% of a Submariner at 5% of the cost. I dress business casual or better every work day and the watch just works. Shorts and a t-shirt, and it didn't look out of place. The other watches get their wrist time and I truly enjoy them. The best is the gold day date that my dad handed down. It is a bit blingy for a parish priest, but it wears so well.
I wear my late 80's Seiko quartz daydate/fluted/jubilee in the same colorway! With a silver signet ring on the same hand! Since i have switched jobs to a more desk role, this is really my go-to. I used to wear my casio-royale for the 4 alarm function timing my breaks. I guet some inspiration from my Dad, he wears a Tudor presidential date-just on a rolex band, he has had it for as long as I can remember before I was born. Only his is all silver. Day date or date-just is 10/10.
If I could only have one watch, it'd be the Grand Seiko Snowflake or Rolex Explorer 2 Polar 16570. I've had the pleasure of being able to try both of them on and they're both phenomenal. Between their specs, design, versatility. In a lot of ways, I couldn't ask for more. Another great video, TGV!
I have o say that if I were going to settle for one watch it would be my Aqua Terra. It ticks each box. 150m water resistance ✅ Time/date complications ✅ Works with casual/dress attire ✅ Featured on the big screen (James Bond Spectre)✅ Certified strap monster✅
My SARB033 gets the nod from me, thankfully one of your videos brought it to my attention and I bought it when they were still a remarkable deal. Thanks for the great advice TGV 😉
Ron! Wonderful to hear from you and equally about your love the the SARB033. They certainly don't make them like that anymore. Thank you and eep up the great EDC posts, I always love them. Best regards, TGV
Funny. Recently I have been thinking about the state of my collection. And I ask myself if I were to keep only one or two, okay maybe three, watches, what will they be? After some soul searching, I have come up with the three, first, the Rolex GMT master II, second the Cartier Tank , and finally for daily wear, my Seiko 5, day date. The Seiko 5 is so versatile that I can wear it anywhere. It goes well with a suit or jeans. And if you look at the watch and then close your eyes for a second, you will see a Rolex Explorer with day date complexities. 😄
I have thought about this idea more recently. I could never just do one watch but I could do with fewer, more hard-hitting pieces. My wife just got back from Japan and brought me a Seiko SPB143 and it has me thinking I wouldn't have acquired some of my other pieces if I had this first. At least that's what I'm deluding myself to believe right now 😅 Cheers TGV!
I have the Seiko prospex SPB153 aka The Capitan Willard and dam I love that watch ⌚ and the almost 43mm case size is so wearable because of the very short lugs
@@IDKline It's a beautiful watch ⌚ with great finishing and the crown is buttery smooth and the rotor is pretty quiet 😎 and the Apocalypse Now association is just a awesome bonus. I just hope for a Commander Pogue recreation faithful to the original with that awesome gold dial but they should do gold, black and blue. Automatic of course
My favourite everyday watch is something close to the datejust, its a vintage oyster precision ref.6427.I love the simplicity and the overall aesthetics of that watch and it is affordable compared to other rolex models.
For me, my Omega Speedmaster Professional is my do-it-all watch. I met a gentleman this summer who noticed my Speedy because he was wearing his. Turns out he received his as a gift from Buz Aldrin who was his neighbor for a time. I wouldn’t have met him and learning about the provenance of his watch had it not been for my Speedy. Pretty cool.
I would love to have a 36mm Rolex two tone date just in my collection of watches but it's unaffordable to me so will probably never have one. I have three Seiko 5 automatic watches in my collection which I really enjoy wearing. My automatic of choice though which I wear often is one of three field watches that I own and that is my Hammond Khaki King with a brown dial which looks gold in certain light conditions. I really enjoy military style watches being ex military and that particular watch is perfect for me. It wears well on my smaller size wrist and is accurate and is slim and can be worn perfectly with a suit or casual dress equally. I have several other brands in my collection also with Citizen Eco Drive watches and Seikos and several Casio watches my favourite of those being the Data Bank watch and my two G-Shock 5610's. Great video as always TGV.
I fell in love with the Submariner after seeing one on the wrist of Nick Nolte in the 1977 film .."The deep." But, unlike most subs in movies, it was actually being used as it should be used. "Diving!" (Great film if you haven't seen it)
In 2007 I gifted myself my first nice watch: a Speedy. I was a content 1 watch man for 12 years. 2019 I began to look for a rugged watch (I'm a motorcyclist) I tried the Sinn U1. In 12 years I punched 2 watches, in the next 2 years ... 4 more! An Explorer would be my choice for a 1 watch collection, if I had one. So t will be my DJ41. Smooth bezel, silver dial, and I removed the very recognizable oyster bracelet in favor of a variety of straps. From 10 feet it looks like a Bulova. But, if a Zombie Apocalypse breaks out, Sinn U1 all the way :)
Love your videos TGV, and somehow I'm getting a feeling that your wife isn't getting her Datejust back. Just purchased the Tissot 35mm PRX and cannot stop wearing it or even staring at it. I'm just captivated by it's look, feel and style. Again please keep the videos coming. Please keep us updated on your love of watches or dare I say Horology. Plus let's not forget all the movie references. Stay safe and kind regards as always Rikki.
I think you've gone to a new level of almost philosophical watch reviewing, a level which other watch channels can only aspire to
Agree!!
Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. If I could take a blue pill and replay 1992-1999 I would. Great video TGV!
OMG, so would I my friend, so would I!
Thank you Scott,
Best regards,
TGV
It's nice to have 1 panerai, I cartier, 1 rolex, 1 omega, 1 Breitling, 1 timex, 1 Casio, 1 patek.
...and that would be 1 awesome collection!
Pure class, thank you, love that idea.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry and 1 Seiko
1 Pagani Design...😅🤣😂
I have the same collection, except the Panerai, the Cartier, the Rolex, the Omega, the Brietling, and the Patek😁
It me!!! ( minus the Rolex which I will never own-- substitue Breguet) 😊
I'd personally pick the Datejust! I've always seen it as the perfect daily and aspire to own a modern one in the future. The gold and steel with fluted bezel combo is just legendary.
👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Thomas, I love your style. Simply timeless.

My father only had wore this watch since '84. It impressed me as a kid already.
100%! It's hard to describe, but the Rolex Datejust is just perfect in so many ways. I also aspire to own one in the hopefully not so distant future (although, given the current situation, who knows).
@@looplop I've got two tone Datejust with silver linen dial bought it for my 21 birthday 1974

The #1 watch on my “next buy” list. Beautiful
That's the watch with an annoying tooth paste cap at 10 o 'clock position 🤔
I struggle with the cheesy Bond association but other than, it’s a nice watch
I have an Explorer 1, 36mm and about 10 G-Shocks 😊 I made my choice a while back: One big hitter and then lots of far more affordable fun!
Good plan!
I pretty well have that same thing. An explorer 40 and some Prospex, g shock, timex
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Thanks TGV. Right there with you on the Pelagos 39. If they do it in blue, my Longines HC will be making way for it 😁
I got the blue variant a few months ago but couldn’t make the bracelet work, even with an Uncle Seiko half-link. I just got a Forstner O bracelet for it & it’s great!
@@chriscon8463 Have a blue one myself and absolutely love it, use the leather strap to smarten it up but most of the time it lives on a MN strap or NATO. If I could only have one watch out of my collection the 58 would be it.
@@Lowdowndog I’ll have to give it a try on leather!
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but if i could only have 1 watch for the rest of my life it would more than likely be a G-SHOCK.
Not unpopular, but would have to be something on the smaller side and either black or metal to suit more occasions but an entirely respectable choice.
I have a ProTrek that I feel the same about. Not a pretty watch, but incredibly useful
100% would be my gw-5000u square.
A solid choice!
Agree entirely. I'll always have my Seiko 5 SNK355 and a Casio F-91W in my collection.
Great video. While I love the classic 36mm Datejust, my choice, if allowed only one watch, would be my 36mm 124270 Explorer. It is literally the perfect watch for me.
0:10 I just started the video but I'm just waiting for the, "HOWEVER....." 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I KNEW it! Lololol
Wow, I don't think I could do only one watch! Even if I had a date just! Great vid as usual!
It looks like you have lots more video like this to enjoy 😉 🥂
Best regards,
TGV
You are a true gem …
My RECENT 1 watch is my 11600 Rolex OP white dial….simplicity and functionality and beauty to its best…I have been wearing my JLC master ultra thin calendar with moon face for almost half a year (mainly work place), and switching weekend to 36mm pilot for weekend…but the fact that whenever i put my Rolex back on, i never change regardless of occasion, and it brings me so much joy of looking at it says pretty much everything
🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏 As for the Omega AT, it's like an even classier DJ 😉
You are so right, it's like the descendant of my vintage Seamaster. Excellent observation, I need to remember that.
Thank you Alex,
Best regards,
TGV
Cheers!
@@bstp2023 Sad but true... Hope you have a kick ass birthday!
Hi TGV!
If I have to choose only one watch out of my current collection it would be my Cartier Santos (Ref. WSSA0037) for now. Its relatively versatile. But it might be that I would look for an Omega Aqua Terra as THE one watch. It has got this understatement I like.

Claus
👏👏👏👏 Always a man of exceedingly good taste. Thank you Claus, great to hear from you.

Very nice video, yet again... who do you send watches to service them, if you don't mind me asking, if anyone knows let me know... cheers
I miss the old yellow notepads! Top video TGV 🦖
had this problem with watches and solved it with 16233 datejust it just goes so well with everything you dress.
(Though I’m personally not a big fan of the Roman numerals)
My father in law owns a 67 two-tone datejust with jubilee bracelet.
For the 1st few bars of the intro, I thought that it was going to be the Safety dance!!! Lol Great video
I’m stuck between my explorer I 36mm and Cartier santos M. I’d like to get your thoughts on it. I wear the santos more than my explorer I.
Bad juju?
Another great video. Mine would be the Omega Railmaster from the 1957 Trilogy pack... absolutely love it.
16:36 I own that Eagle 7! It must be about 30 years old, and still keeps decent time.
I am not holding folding so am gonna have to go with my new 2022 black alpinist on an angus jubilee strap....as always am loving your work.
Thanks!
The thumbnail is my dream watch right now. I feel like I can rock that anywhere. Plus the size is perfect
And it does
Great video! If I had to pick one watch, it would be my Tudor Ranger, love the simplicity.
I second the skx for all the reasons you mentioned.
Only one… my black 2003 Rolex Submariner-no date. It’s been around the world with me and will be an heirloom to someone special.
So glad to see MOP being showcased. I have a DJ with the same configuration, except it’s 41mm instead of 36mm and has diamond hour markers instead of Roman numerals. I absolutely love it; it looks positively heavenly.
Quality content. Viewed because I'm thinking about a 1978 TT DJ with a silver pie pan dial. I thought I hated TT watches until I saw this one!
👏👏👏 I know EXACTLY how you feel my friend.
Thank you Michael,
Best regards,
TGV
With that opening beat, I was expecting a TGV version of "Safety Dance"....."We can watch if we want to, we can always tell the time....."
@tgv amazing video. One question can somebody please tell me the song of the intro, please. Thank you all in advance.
Great content.
I love my datejust (8 years on from what I now realise was lucky - as I just bought it on holiday from an AD and that didn’t seem weird at the time)
As it’s an older model it doesn’t have any lume though.
You helped me to have much higher reverence to the people and processes hidden behind a watch piece. I did not get it so clearly before.

I have a Datejust 36 16233 two tone that I would wear quite often, however for close to two years my Squale 1545 30 ATM has been my go to.
I agree. I have a turn o graph in blue dial.
I have thought about this idea more recently. I could never just do one watch but I could do with fewer, more hard-hitting pieces. My wife just got back from Japan and brought me a Seiko SPB143 and it has me thinking I wouldn't have acquired some of my other pieces if I had this first. At least that's what I'm deluding myself to believe right now 😅
Cheers TGV!
I have the Seiko prospex SPB153 aka The Capitan Willard and dam I love that watch ⌚ and the almost 43mm case size is so wearable because of the very short lugs
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 That green is next level! I love that whole design and could easily see adding one or it being on par with the 62mas.
Not completely sure, but either my Seamaster or Tudor Date Day 76200 I purchased from you several years ago.
It would have to be an Explorer 1 36mm. It threads the needle between sporty and dressy very well. Add a leather strap and it'll work with a suit/tux.
I would be happy with a Range Master, everything I want from Alpinst, Tudor Ranger, Rolex Explorer. Is another Islander TGV collab in the works?
