    Edits:
    GHL has nearly 21cuft cargo
Pilot has HUD on elite trim.
'23 Pilot has 22' cargo. I left in the cargo for the old gen.
I forgot to put the Explorer in the Tier list. It's a solid B. Interior holds it back from A.
Korean twins use 3.8, not 3.6

Thanks for the side by side comparison. I’ve had two Atlas’s and would argue there’s a lot to love, especially in the cargo room. I also purposed to buy the 4 cylinder with each, since the power is more than adequate and the added economy makes it well worth it. Seems to me other manufacturers (Honda) are finally realizing SUV owners want something that looks like an SUV, which the Atlas has done very well.

Well done Kirk. As an engineer, you had me at "spreadsheet", however even the non-engineer family members loved this video. It is a quality production video to be sure but what really makes this presentation stand out is that people who are looking for a vehicle in a particular category (like 3 row family haulers) appreciate a comprehensive comparison between all current candidates. Even brand loyal buyers enjoy these comparisons if for no other reason than to validate their choice. It just so happens that we are interested in replacing my wife's 2014 Durango with a large 3 row replacement crossover, so this video is quite timely. I agree with you too that the Grand Highlander is near, if not at, the top of this group. A prime version would clinch the deal for me for sure. You are to be commended for this video. I rarely subscribe but today is one of those days that I did.

The Lexus version of the GH Prime (TX550h+) is slotted for their lineup, but I don't think it'll be available (just as the smaller RX450h+) from the start until Toyota gets enough battery material to expand the HSD Prime line of PHEV's.
Whether this Prime HSD makes it into the Toyota brand lineup beyond the Rav4 in this generation is anyone's guess.

@@KirkKreifels Great question... although I haven't driven some of these (like the Grand Highlander and CX-90, both not out for media drives yet), my preference is the Grand Highlander, Pilot, Telluride, CX-90, and the Grand Cherokee (which is surprisingly good). Outlander would be close 6th. My view is more based on overall performance and driving character though… Once we both have a chance to drive the Grand Highlander and the CX-90, perhaps the ranking might change.

@@rightlanehog3151 - problem with using the GR 3-pot is that it maybe TOO SMALL to be used in such a large / heavy app as a Highlander / RX or a GH / TX.
The T-1.6L 3-pot is a RACING-DERIVED engine with an amount of HAND-MADE CRAFTSMANSHIP in it (it may not scale up well in production) and probably not intended for mass market apps.
Also the take % for manual transmissions on PEOPLE MOVERS like crossovers and minivans is so MINUSCULE that it will not make financial sense. A WET DUAL-CLUTCH automatic "may" make more sense if you want more fun for larger and HEAVIER apps.

Ascent - Very utilitarian and lots of room. I was surprised how much camping gear my buddy was able to pack into that thing. As a three-row, it doesn't do too well, but my buddy who is a family man loves his. Real world fuel economy is right around 26MPG.
Jeep Grand Cherokee - It's a jeep. I know someone who bough one a year ago and it looks great inside and out (Not the L). But it went to the shop 3 times in the first two months. After one year of ownership, the thing rattles like an $80k tin can. I might be a little biased comparing it with my 4Runner TRD Pro, but the 4Runner still drives like brand new, no rattle, no creaks, build quality is superb. 4Runner is a year old now with 32k miles. It's a road trip machine! More like a fishing machine towing my kayaks to all sorts of places. I'd love to see what they do with the next gen 4Runner, but I don't like the thought of having a 4banger in there. That leaves me hoping for the 3.5TTV6 going into the next GX as long as they fix that rear door issue. Don't like the rear door opening up towards the curb.

Had the Ascent. Glad we leased it for 3 years. Has battery issues where the battery dies every week or two. Wife who didn't know how to pump gas to start became a pro at boosting a car. Lots of online forums and groups talking about this issue. Seems like they put a smaller battery in it and if lights or door is left open, it drains the battery (should have a timer and shut it down).

Feel validated looking at your tiers.
I purchased a 2021 Grand Cherokee L after thoroughly checking out and test driving the Atlas, Palisade, Telluride, Highlander (not GH - not out at the time) and Explorer.
Not having a hybrid bothered me for all of 2 minutes because the design, luxury and tech more than made up for the low mpgs. I would agree with some commenters here that a price vs value based rating would take the level of your tiers up a notch. Had I a fixed budget, I may have ended up with a Palisade/Telluride (with the markup included) that pound for pound gave you the most comfort/options.
Great video and keep up the good work!
P.S I'm surprised at the lack of comments about the Jeep GCL on your video. A 1-year old used GCL Overland (what I purchased) with all the features ended up being cheaper than a brand new Palisade/Telluride. Similar mpg but more towing and better looking too.

I almost agree with the list you have given Kirk. However, I would put the GH, Pilot, and the Koreans twins on the top tier. I would put the Grand Cherokee L a tier down because even though it’s large on the outside, it doesn’t necessarily translate to the cargo or passenger space that I personally would like.
As for the Koreans, yes the side impact situation is a concern to me, however everything about them is good.

  • @StrokeofJeanius
    @StrokeofJeanius ปีที่แล้ว +8

The Pilot’s use of the Acura super handling all wheel drive torque vectoring system wasn’t directly mentioned in the video but seems like a big advantage for that FWD based platform over the others(Kia/Hyundai). That alone would help it to compete with the CX-90 or Grand Cherokee L for driving dynamics. I know that Toyota uses a similar system in some of their Highlander models but I’m not sure it’s quite as performance oriented as the Honda system.

Kirk, I see your spreadsheet doesn't have much data on the VW Atlas full-sized crossover and another automotive channel I follow do compare the Grand Highlander with the Atlas as being "the largest in class". I can see it won't have "Toyota reliability", but the Atlas is more comparable as it dropped their VR6, just like Toyota dropped their V6 (the "9M" 2G LWB Lambdas* had kept available their V6). I do agree that the Chevy and Buick (along with the VW) compete with the larger Toyota as "largest in class".
There are 2 WB (large enough difference) on the 9M's "Lambda": SWB (GMC and Cadillac) and LWB (Chevy and Buick). The Buick and Cadillac only have the V6, the Chevy and GMC have a T-2.0L as base with the V6 optional.
You know already why there's no GH Prime (or TX500h+ from the start). That PHEV needs 18.1 kWh of "juice" and they're keeping what little battery material they have for their self-charging HSD's (they can put material for 11.5 self-charging HSD's in the same space as 1 Prime) and their few BEV's. That's why Toyota went the Turbo way (I'll call it HSD MAX) with a bit of "efficiency sacrifice".
The JGC and the Durango come now from 2 RWD-based sources: both JGC's come from a cheapened Giorgio (Alfa Romeo Stelvio) platform, while the Durango still soldiers on on the modified last gen Mercedes GLS platform.
    * they have now another name but that Greek letter name for the OG sounds so distinctive, and it does include the Buick Enclave, which is the same size and have the same NA-3.6L V6 with nearly the same output (optional on Traverse, standard on Enclave)

Kirk's take on the Durango is reasonably accurate. But here is the shocker regarding the lowly Durango according to TrueDelta: "The Durango had a pretty decent 2023. Sales were up 24% to almost 70,000 units making 2023 the best year ever for Durango. I'll repeat that, 2023 was THE BEST sales year ever for a vehicle on sale for 12 model years...
That also means Dodge outsold the Acadia, Blazer, Atlas, Ascent, Passport, CX-90+CX-9 (combined), Enclave, and came within spitting distance of Pathfinder. By the time this 3-row Dodge ends production, it'll have been on sale for 15-years" Let's face it, despite a number of negative factors, a lot of folks like the Durango enough to buy one!

@@Blank00 - I do believe EPA has done interior room categories in cubic feet for crossovers and SUV's separate from those of other car variants. Today's Outlander, like the Rogue / Xtrail / QX50 - 55 where it comes from is a COMPACT CROSSOVER.
Even the midsize crossovers (Kia Sorento is such a case) doesn't make a true 7 or 8 seater as their 3rd row is still "kids / teens-only') are not confortable. You have to go to the full-sized crossover category to find an adult-sized 3rd row (Andrea Spencer of Motormouth proved that point when she got on the 3rd row of a Grand Highlander at the Canadian Auto Show in Toronto) and even there it is "almost doable".
The reason Kirk included the Outlander is that 3rd row (not available on Nissan or Infiniti variants, which were not included here) and the '23 inclusion of a Mitsubishi-made / designed PHEV system (it is based on the World Engine 2.4L, not on Nissan's 2.5L like the non-PHEV).

I haven’t heard many complaints of a Sorento but Kia’s have a bad rep too. But as for a Palisade and Telluride, they have proven to be luxurious junk, I’ve seen many have issues with fires and their safety is not on par with the competition. Grand Cherokee L, omg literally a trainwreck of reliability issues. I have a friend that has had one for about a year now, it’s been in the shop THIRTEEN times. Durangos, I actually should have put that higher because they use a lot of older equipment and they aren’t as bad. Durango should be borderline of b and a tier

It’s a big plus when you think about it besides the PHEV. If Toyota already ditched the 6 cylinder in the GH then this might be a good contender for them.
I’m also pretty sure the current CX-50 is made in the same US plant as Toyota’s RAV4 (I think?) since Mazda and Toyota made a manufacturing deal with each other. The problem is HOW interior space is used. The Palisade/Telluride have loads of cubic feet inside, yet they mounted the seats so close to the doors that there's 0 shoulder room. The Pilot is the same size yet has gobs more usable space. The 2023 regular Highlander suffers the same problem - there's plenty of space but the B pillar eliminates shoulder space and the back outer seat occupants are pressed against the doors.
The Grand Highlander will be bigger - but if they use the standard Toyota/Lexus seating position (can't put your arms down to their sides) and keep moving features onto subscription services (at least for a while some Toyotas had physical remote start buttons on their key fobs that DIDN'T WORK unless you paid a subscription) it won't be as exciting as we hope.
