    Thing is... Dijon was in a few episodes of the show. And he came from a country where everybody talked like that, and MOST people there weren't thieves. In fact, Dijon's brother was a protector of an ancient relic-- a goose that could turn anything into gold. Like, yeah, DIJON is a thief... but the show did pretty well in showing that not everybody from their race was.
    I mostly bring this up because people who aren't overly familiar with the show might think the character was made specifically for the movie and not get that Scrooge has had many encounters with Dijon. Many times Dijon rectified his crimes-- which is probably one of the reasons Scrooge keeps associating with him... besides the fact he's cheap to hire.

      Yeah he comes from india where his brother is the protecter of the golden goose true he steals it but it is on a whim and he is conflicted but loses it before he can turn it back in. He tries to get by in life even tho its hard he cant get a job because of his cleptomania so he has to do odd work of the kind that aint legal.

      I never thought much about Dijon because - honestly - I couldn't figure out what he was supposed to be. I could see, of course, that he was a dog. But I didn't know the "breed" of dog, so to speak. Dijon seemed very much like a Muslim Arab, but his brother Poupon dressed like a Christian monk. And they were both named after varieties of French mustard, which is funny, but...then why not make them French instead? (And yes, my friends and I made fun of the name "Poupon." A LOT.)

    • @Godzillakingofkaiju1
      @Godzillakingofkaiju1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the reboot, Dijon is renamed Djinn and he is descended from a genie who married his great-grandmother and the lamp is more-or-less a family relic. Also, he's basically the Disney version of Ardeth Bay from the Brendan Fraser Mummy films.

    The newest episode of the new Ducktales was a big homage to this and Quack Pack.
    It had donald make a wish for his family to be normal so the genie traps them in an early 90s sitcom. They even get the lamp in a room identical to the treasure room from the film- the basket of gold, the pillar surrounded by scorpions- everything!

    To me, stereotypes aren't inherently racist. It depends on how they handle them or if they say anything negative about them.

    • @Silverizael
      @Silverizael 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +AdamGregory03 The problem is that using harmful stereotype and caricatures that
      trivialize people of certain cultures or even portray them as bad people
      (such as thieves in this), then there are a lot of people who would
      actually believe people of that race or culture are all like that. And
      that can and has in the past led to purposeful discrimination because of
      said stereotypes. Even discrimination in the vein of harming or killing people of such cultures.

      Yes, but they're all portrayed as heroes who, despite their faults, have many redeeming qualities and are ultimately portrayed as "the good guys" and heroic. Dijon is a cowardly backstabbing thief whose only redeeming quality is that he thought killing the ducks was going a bit overboard.

    FUN FACT: The majority of the DuckTales episodes, especially early on, were outsourced to Tokyo Movie Shinsha, who did great work on several US cartoons during this era. DT:TotLL, however, was animated "in-house-sort-of" by Disney's then-extant Paris studio, which explains how the animation was even better than the show's already high quality.

    “A lot of times people try to take a successful TV show and make a movie out of it, the #1 complaint is that it just seems like a longer version of an episode.”
    Personally I think that should be a complement, because I grew up watching TV show movies like Rugrats in Paris, Recess: School’s Out, The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, The Simpsons Movie, The Powerpuff Girls Movie and even this film and they were pretty awesome.
    Not to mention with people usually making live-action/CGI hybrids of classic cartoons these days, these other movies (While just to promote the TV Shows they were based on) were more faithful to their represented series than what the Live-Action/CGI Hybrid films were. So I think we should be thankful these TV Cartoon movies are a bajillion times better than those awful Live-Action/CGI Hybrid movies.
    And after the recent success of *The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water* and the recent announcements of a *MLP: FiM movie* and an *Adventure Time movie*, I’m beginning to feel like we are going to relive those days, and it will make me feel like a kid again.

      +Robert “Robovski” Turner The problem is that using harmful stereotype and caricatures that
      trivialize people of certain cultures or even portray them as bad people
      (such as thieves in this), then there are a lot of people who would
      actually believe people of that race or culture are all like that. And
      that can and has in the past led to purposeful discrimination because of
      said stereotypes. Even discrimination in the vein of harming or killing people of such cultures.

      Unfortunately, dumbasses can vote and they often vote for things that discriminate against others. Like all of the voting laws a bunch of states in the south are trying to pass that would negatively affect minority groups' ability to vote.

      +Silverizael The dumbasses who base their political view on a kids movie can't vote because such people don't exist.
      Also it would be great if the International Community Of The Ever So Caring And Sensitive could be whining less about trivial things and start defending the Right of Free Speech.

      How are they not defending the right to free speech? There are no legal repercussions for your speech unless you do something like yell fire or lie in court or whatever. But the freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. You're allowed to say whatever you want and other people are allowed to call you out on it.
      That's them exercising their right to free speech as well.

      What I'm saying is that people see discrimination because they WANT to see it. There's a theory that in the show, the ducks symbolize "whites" and the dogs symbolize "blacks." This is compounded by the idea that the ducks are white ducks and the dogs are darker. This is bad enough with stereotypes like the butler and Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys playing the "emotionless Brit" and "ugly (especially in women) = bad," but add this angle and the whole series, by your logic, should be banned.
      Even beyond that, the show is filled with other negative white stereotypes like the"misery rich," "good-looking doofus," the "lanky nerd." I'll even wager that fans even can tell you whom I just described. But, since this are negative stereotypes against whites (and male to boot), they're considered okay to make.
      I just live by the philosophy: "To each his own" and "Go screw yourself." I still love this movie and the series from which it came.

    And now the new DuckTales will have multiple TV movie installments that will air exclusively as TV movies without being split into regular episodes. Disney started doing this with Sofia The First and it's apparently their new business model. I think this is great because it gives the animators a chance to tell bigger stories without having to worry about tv-style pacing. They can actually make a movie with movie-style pacing. It would be nice to see some of these on the big screen, but tv movies are cool too.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be poetic, since Disneytoons Studios was created primarily for Ducktales the Movie and several other Disney Afternoon movies that were planned before the first one failed to sell enough tickets. Now the studio is stuck doing most of the company's DTV projects (most infamously the cheapquels) so making Ducktales movies again would at least be a return to old role.

But I loved it tons, watched it a lot and was my first real introduction to Duck Tales and Scrooge McDuck. Here's hoping the new series is just as entertaining.

    I think I watched this movie or at least part of it. I was kind of young when I watched it. The only thing I remember about it was not knowing who Webby was. I recognized Dewey, Louie and Hewey but I had no idea who the flying hell Webby was. I did not know there was a show called Ducktales at the time. I don't think that guide is supposed to be racist, he's more of a caricature of the desert vagrant you usually see in these types of movies.
