I'm right there with Travis. Doing shit like this is why I play TTRPGs. Kamikaze style shit feels incredible when it actually works and creates the most memorable moments.

This is bad ass but it is no less heart wrenching. If I was at the table I would most definitely be Travis hyping up my friend..... When I get in the car to go home I'm a sopping baby for like 2 minutes of the drive.

When Matt Mercer has to stop and think about the scenario, like full blue screen second, that is a powerful move.
NO JOKE!! The way his jaw hung for a full minute before he could form coherent thoughts! An EPIC moment in CR history..😢
He's stopping to think because this is not something FCG can do on paper and he's struggling to think about how it'll work mechanically.
And yet he was able to create something so beautiful together with the choices Sam was making! Every time I watch this I'm in awe that he was able to pull it together and keep guiding the story when he was this shocked and emotional about the turn it had taken. (Like, I know that's his JOB, but still!!!)
@@ryanjackson6298they actually found out that his arcane core can function as a nuke ages ago, while he was being worked on by Imahara Joe I think. They may not have had exact damage for it, but Sam was essentially given the big red button a long time ago, it’s not something he just pulled out of nowhere to break the rules or something.
@@DwiteLoot I think that Firbolg professor said his core can retain more magic energy than a normal aeormaton can hold. Warned that if it overloaded, it could be very destructive.

Travis paid tribute to this moment on socials with Vegeta's sacrifice against Buu - appropriate. Also, his "Marisha..." when she's trying to find out if he's revivable was perfect.

I wonder if the animated series will have the 'what's my mother's name' speech. The characters are a lot closer off rip in that series and it'd be odd for them to backslide at this point

FCG, The little aeormaton that could. Thank you Sam, for bringing this absolute gem of a character to life. We will never forget them. One of the most crushing and loving moment in CR history.
FCGs story only really started when, in a rage, he killed all his friends in a cave. Now it ends with him, in a rage, saving all his friends in a cave.
I just realized Orym's deal is void now and maybe Sam chose a blaze of glory to save Liam since Orym was making his last stand so everyone else could run away😢
Scanlan couldn’t save Vax. But FCG saved Orym.

So the thing about this is that, the deal might have already been completed. When the went through the back door portal on Ruidus and went back to Exandria, she can claim they “Safely returned from Ruidus” as promised. Whether or not she will do this idk, but it is still very much possible that Orym is bound by the deal which if so is tragic.

@@FearlessGamer27 I think the odds of this is like 0% because 1. Orym was VERY specific in his wording which Hags value. 2. it would lessen the value of FCGs sacrifice out of game a bit, 3. That would be slimey and I think Nana likes Orym and considers Fearne as family for some reason.

Watching Matt's face starting at 1:45 is so heartbreaking. You can see how it slowly goes skack as he realizes just what FCG wants to do. It's so tragic and human.
I also love how Travis is so proud of the choice Sam makes. Without this choice they all were probably going to die. This is, as the episode is titled, true heroism

This is the most flustered I've ever seen Matt. By far.
Matt said that the mechanic was created at the spot, but the possibility and hinting came up long before in Campaign 3, Episode 45, when talking with professor Vitro Isham. It's awesome call back to that episode and I love Sam actually remembered and was willing to use it.
It was said that FCG has a much bigger core that would be needed for his designated job and that it's unstable and when overcharged or damaged it may explode

Matt couldn't be more devastated, man, I hope he doesn't blame himself for pushing them SO hard. Otohan was always tough as nails and this fight was brutal, but FCG would've made the same choice everytime.
He was so stressed!! The threat of a TPK was so real, so his tears were of sadness, relief... jeez, mine too. Otohan was a formidable opponent, I want to know her build so bad
I think she herself is a Psi Fighter, and the backpack gives her Echo Knight capabilities, so she’s a fighter (~16th level?) with two subclasses simultaneously. And then on top of that she can use legendary actions to get over action economy issues. Very cool way to build a big bad! Scary as hell for sure.
@@davidcurry5240 i did that once. the character was so scary in test fights i shelved it for when my Players were better equipped and leveled. final fight of the campaign, imagine 6 20lvl against a single 16lvl and only 3 of them walked away.

I think he was channeling ashton a lot through this, and ashton deals with things by being angry lmao. Taliesin says he has a few rules that govern ashtons behaviour, one of them being "do not ever fuck with my friends."

@@silversalmon9909 Oh yeah. And the number one application of that rule is for FCG. He's the one Ashton trusted and cared for the most. And Ashton saw himself as FCG's protector. He probably would have given his life to save FCG - but then FCG gave his life to save Ashton instead. I bet Ashton sincerely wishes it'd been him instead, so he wouldn't have to lose his little brother.
You know, I thought the moment they killed Ottohan they would’ve been cheering and celebrating over taking out the person that has caused them so much trouble. But no, they don’t get that. Every meeting with her was and I guess now will always be a massacre leading to some of the most tragic moments in the campaign.
I love that. proves that ottohan was a menace. A villain who wasn’t redeemed. Just a bad bitch
@@sophialopez9806 And it's perfect for that reason. There was no gimmick. There was no time where Otohan fucked around. She was a monster, who always brought tragedy and devastation in her wake. And that's the kind of threat you need in order to justify sacrifices like this. She posed such an extreme threat that this tragedy was a price worth paying. And that's beautiful storytelling, imo.
Sam always kills it in moments like this. This moment, Loquatius' speech, Scanlan trying to save his last 9th level to save Vax, his final wish to bring Vax back for a moment. Everytime, tears.
Possibly the most insane play I've ever seen in D&D, take a bow Sam Riegel you absolute madman. Making the ultimate sacrifice to protect those you love is never easy but if it avoids a TPK and takes out one of the biggest bads in the campaign at the same time it makes it worth it

So good. Marisha's immediate denial. It's Sam, surely he has a plan, right? SURELY this is just another one of Sam's moments where he's going to do something crazy and then shock us all, right? RIGHT? It's such a instinctive, visceral reaction and so utterly relatable. And then Travis coming in like the dad telling his kid their favorite pet isn't coming back. Just. poetry.
The way Travis was just like "Marisha". Cause there was no going back

what’s funny is when Laura says to Sam to detonate.. I don’t think she thought FCG would actually die doing it 😅
I thought initially she meant “Would it happen if you die?”, not “You should do it”
But also there were some breakdowns of side conversations, and some think she could have say it to Ashley referring to some shard ability.
Hard to say there were to much going on during that heart attack of a battle.
I took that as an ability that Ashely may have had but to look on Sam’s face looked like he remembered C2 and went with it.
She was definitely talking to Ashley coz Ashley said way back when she first got the shard that she could basically explode

3:22 Sam could’ve simply said “Yes”, and Matt would probably understand. Instead, Sam gave such a powerful speech to let, not only Matt, but everyone else know that FCG was truly ready to give up his own life to save his friends, his family. Matt’s reaction is amazing afterwards. God, what a bittersweet moment.
I'm so worried Ashton is gonna regress after this and start refusing to let anyone in again. 😢
I couldn't take my eyes off of Liam and Tal. I feel so bad for Orym, losing another close person to all of this, and Liam nearly breaking saying "I'm really sad" was so heartbreaking, but Tal's reaction is what nearly wrecked me. Ashton started with letters, they found them first, traveled with them first. Seeing Taliesin fighting so hard and coming so infinitely close to just completely breaking down was gut wrenching to watch. And Matt also fighting back trying to keep DMing and narrating was hard to see too. Everyone's reactions were so sad. Sam Riegel continues to be such a gem in this show.
Vax, Molly, and now FCG. Three legends that sacrificed themselves.
Yes, but they aren't the same. Vax didn't really sacrifice himself - he was forced to return under his Revenant bargain because he was disintegrated. The real sacrifice was from Scanlan, who gave up his chance to avert his friend's fate in order to save the world from Vecna.
Then there's Molly. And I'll be honest - Molly's death was the result of a plan gone south. There was no noble sacrifice there. He just got killed because things went off the rails. But the party had no idea how dangerous the encounter would be, there were many factors that fell against the party, and Molly didn't make a choice to sacrifice himself - he just got screwed over and died.
FCG is the only PC we've ever seen who consciously made the choice to sacrifice their life for their friends. And that makes it FAR more powerful to me. Especially since the combat was going so poorly, and because we saw what Otohan did the last time she fought Bell's Hells. He paid the price, but I'm doing so, he prevented another partial wipe. Even in death, FCG protected his friends. And that's what counts.
Molly didn't sacrifice himself.
He fought to save his friends. Even if it was using his ability to harm himself. Even if he didn't sacrifice himself, he still fought until the end.

I'm actually excited to see his new character. Hoping for a Charisma based class, Sam really shines with characters that use charisma.
Also, I have to point out that in every single campaing Sam Riegel changes his sheet or character: C1 we had Scanlan and Tarry, C2 we had Nott and Veth, C3 we have FCG and...
This has aged well, I guess. Just in a very unexpected way.

Me, recovering, hearing Liam croak that he's really sad and just bursting into tears again

You can see how close these people are to one another... not just as players but also as a family. When Matt starts to cry, Marisha and Laura takes one look and just breaks :(. People say Matt pushed them too hard with the Ottohan battles, but honestly the fact that he is crying when FCG made his sacrifice, truly shows how much he cares for the characters.
What a brilliant, sad, selfless, emotional, climactic, dark and glorious ending to a devastating episode and a beautiful character. Sam, comes across as the comedy guy of the group (and he is) but people forget how deep the characters he creates truly are. Scanlan, Not/Veth and now FCG all came off as very one dimensional in the beginning, but the redemption arcs Sam creates for them are truly outstanding and so so memorable
RIP FCG - You were more human than anyone else in the campaign.
I’ve rewatched this last scene multiple times and cried every single time
Not only was it a great sacrifice for the character but also love how it started with Marisha said "I'm so mad at you." immediately followed with Travis saying "I'm so proud of you." like parents who's kid just got home from school having had a fight and one is mad they fought and the other is proud...and of course that everybody else is sad apart from Travis who is grinning the entire time cos it's so badass.
That being said Liam's sad face just breaks me man.

It was such a strong character choice and it is what defines FCG to the core: a selfless living soul willing to save his friends over himself. You can see at the table that out of everyone, Travis gives the most respect to Sam's decision. May you live in memory, FCG!
The fact that Sam make's Matt cry while describing what he's feeling and that he is WILLING to do this to save his friends is absolutely heartwrenching and heartwarming at the same god damn time.
It’s so great how they’ve all been playing together for so long and yet can still surprise each other with absolute emotion destruction like this. Blaze of glory indeed.

Seeing Matt's face, as it slowly dawns on him, what Sam is doing is crazy. It's good to be reminded some times, how incredibly amazing the cast and dm for this game are.
I think Matt just felt the same devastation that Sam felt at the end of campaign 1 when Scanlan cast counterspell at level 9

Im doing a rewatch and just got to when he has his first conversation with Imogen about whether or not he’s alive and just sobbed through the whole thing. I’ll miss them so much
I love how Sam no matter what campaign they are in. He makes the entire group look at each other and just cry with almost every character he makes
Sam makes a goofy character, but you know before it's over he is ripping out your heart.
Sam is extremely good at improvised emotional speeches.
(And, having watched Calamity, he’s very good at scripted ones, too.)
I love that Matt decided not to rules lawyer it. Technically she had resistances and only should have taken half damage. She would have lived. Man it’s so good.
He did 79 damage to her so maybe she had less than 35 or whatever that would be
It's not unreasonable at all to say she isn't resistant to an Aeorian core detonating, either.
Matt didnt have to ruleslawyer, because noone is resistant to nuke damage xD
@@d2beej - By my count the party had gotten her back to just three more HP than she had when she took her healing potion for 66, and it's quite possible that she could have saved it until she was under 38 HP when she took it.
Following the Aeor lore and what FCG was made of - I am pretty sure that blast wasn't your average lightning or fire damage...pretty sure nothing with MAYBE the exception of Gods would resist that damage

Just watched this yesterday. While I was doing so, I realized a few moments before this that while FCG was sacrificing for his friends, so did Sam; Sacrificing his story so that Matt’s and everyone else’s could continue.
The jokester always reminds me what’s important in life and I love him for that.
OMG..... I never cried this much in any film, show or production. How absolutely shattering and wonderful a sacrifice made by Letters.
And just when you thought sam wasn't going to make you ugly cry in this campaign too, here it goes.
We had the Bard's lament. We had being drown and revived as the race that killed her, and now we have the smiley day poetic finish of a wonderful soul leaving us.

There's something that reminds me of scanlan when he stopped drinking from the huge tankard when he left, watching him not drink from the gas can after fcg...that is what makes it official for me

I love that quote. However, in this case, it's a bit different. FCG can't know if his friends succeeded on their quest. But given the circumstances - given the fact that he was able to detonate while holding a bloodied Otohan close - we can say that he knew he won that fight for his friends. He wouldn't have known how the story ended. But he went to his grave with a smile, knowing that his friends' story wouldn't end here. I'd like to believe that was enough. ❤
