I’ve never removed the dust cap. The trick is you glue the inner surround first let it set before working on the outer surround. Make sure the cone moves in and out freely without rubbing the inner wall.
If you are patient, you can completely remove the foam and the dust cap without cutting or scraping. Lots of reapplication of isopropyl with a cotton swab - drip it all around the basket, rub it on the cone (small amounts if the cone is absorbent, like paper), eventually the glue will soften and rub off. A craft knife blade might be needed to lift the dust cap once you have removed all visible glue - barely insert it (1/8" or a few mm) and lift slightly and work all the way around. Do not cut anything, just insert, lift, withdraw, move over, repeat. The voice coil wires will pass through the side of the cone near to where you are cutting - look at the side of the cone and you will see where the wires are. Using force to scrape the cone or tear off the dust cap as shown can crease the cone, and in my application, no matching dust caps were available (Parts Express didn't carry a kit for my speakers but I got foam surrounds and glue from a local repair shop).
My advice is to go MUCH slower in real life. It's obvious he went too fast and took a chunk out of the paper cone. I also saw no reason to cut out the dust cap (unless it was damaged). When I replaced my surrounds the cone remained very secure and didn't move at all. The spider held it in place firmly. I'd pass on the shims and use a tone generator as described elsewhere. It's a very satisfying project to do. 👍
It's good to see how relaxed you are when yo do this. I took the plunge today and am glad I did. It seems like a piece of cake. I refoamed two 8" woofers for a pair of Boston Acoustics A70s. After the first pair I'll bet it gets easier all the time. Take your time and it will come out right.
I was cutting cf wrap around the speaker with a hobby knife when i cut the foam about 1-2 inches long. Can i use scotch plastic tape or foam safe super gluee to fix it?
Okay... I ordered the kit. I followed all your instructions perfectly. But what do you do when your neighbors start complaining because now you can finally turn your stereo up and enjoy the bass properly?
I tried to refoam some B&W Drivers. Two of the Speakers have Kevlar cones and the other some type of plastic. I spread the glue and the glue dried before I could get the surround lined up. Made a real damn mess of my lovely speakers.
Modern speakers use a new formulation of foam that contains anti-fungal agents that prevent dry rot. Also, some surrounds are treated with a rubberized coating that shields the foam from humidity.
Hello I have 4 8 inch Rockford punch audiophile in a set of folding exphonable horns , and I was wondering if I could change the rubber on the outside of woofers without ruining the punch dust covers, these speakers are very nice and trying to get them running.
pva glue? no need to centre the cone by removing the dust cap as you can just move the cone so you cant feel it grating , i dont remove the dust cap unless its damaged
have a klh bass cone out of the2wy cabinet the cone itself is intact,,moves smoothly front to back,, connected live speaker wires to the cone contacts, nothing,,tried touching the wires direct to the contacts on the cone surface, lightly reaching w fingers around the metal supports, still no sound,is it dead dead?
Hello, where can i buy the Custom Trim Finishing Surround Subwoofer 10 of them? I can't find them anywhere online, and I need them for Pioneer 10" subwoofers,Thank you all for all the information
If you're looking for something that looks stock you may need to improvise and use pieces of something else. I'll keep thinking and see if I come up with something.
I understand everyone has their own methods of doing things . I always spray paint the cone after I remove the old surrounds with flat black to freshen them up , and I recommend applying the first layer of glue to the back side of the new surround . you will have plenty of time to do all and any adjusting . I also recommend applying the New Surrounds while playing the speaker at a low volume to make sure the sound is Not distorted . your video is well described and is very helpful . Thanks . Ray in Pa.
センターキャップが小さかったね。センターキャップは交換しなくてもコーンのセンターを得る方法がありますよ。(A center cap was small. There is a method to get center of the corn even if don't change the cap.)
one of my channel speakers foam is damaged[a tiny hole] little by insects.Does it affect the sound quality and clarity of that speaker?? is their anyway to fix it?
A tiny hole will not audibly effect anything, but I would recommend patching it with a small amount of rubber cement to prevent it from getting any bigger.

Wondering how risky it is to glue to the old glue on the cone edge? I always carefully remove the old glue so I can reglue directly to the cone material itself.
mine are completely disenigrated but not blown what do i do I have really old American acoustics I got for free there 116 watt each 4/8 impendance with 39hz to 22khz frequency responce
Just use a kit to refoam the speaker. However, I recommend calling and speaking with a technician to verify the dimension and assure he gets one that fits properly. 1-800-338-0531

Any reason to replace the dust cap if it's still in good shape?

That was the worst hack job I can imagine.

Thanks. This is really helpful. Gets me in the ball park. I am from UK. You guys seem to want to help. It has made my day actually !

You sit back and enjoy a job well done! lol. Don't make the neighbors too mad though.

+bongosrest okay... I was wondering this... would there be any harm in not doing this step even if the cone is not damaged?

You're a nice guy.....but there are a lot of no-no's in this video.
My 30 year old Klipsch Corus Speakers (passive 15" subwoofer in back) needs a new 15" subwoofer any suggestions?
use a small wire brush instead of utility knife..

@@PartsExpressOfficial Thanks for any suggestions and help
You could maybe take the screen out of these and use the plastic ring?

do you sell the supplies to do this myself ?
Yes we do! Feel fee to reach out to our tech support team and they can point you in the right direction for the size you need.
I don't want my one time beautiful Infinty woofers to look like they've been repaired. Can I buy exact replacement parts?
Looks like the next time this needs to be done...is a bit more complex. Guess using the paper dust cover might have been easier for future repairs.

No, and you do not need to remove the dust cap.

Try a little chisel next time on the basket. A lot easier than straping the tip of a utility knife

That what I was thinking because it has left an ugly line where the original dust cap was.
that was hard to watch...like another guy stated this is a frreaking hack job bro smh

sounds like that is a problem with your receiver, not your speakers
What if your driver does not have a dust cap?
If it is made that way from the factory no problem, but if your cap is missing then you will need to find a replacement.
That glue seems amazing! what's the make and its own name please?
vinnie dolly Hi Vinnie,
